Energy is the ability to do work. The unit
of work is joule
Different forms of energy
1) Potential energy
2) Kinetic energy

3. POTENTIAL ENERGY
Objects possess energy by virtue of
their position. This is potential
energy.
If an object of mass ‘m’ is at
height ‘h’ the potential energy
u = mgh.

 Water stored at a
height
 A stone placed at a
height

5. KINETIC ENERGY
The energy possessed
due to the motion of an
object is kinetic energy.

6. EXAMPLES
Flowing water in a river.
Toy car in motion.
Compressed spring.
Water flows down through
penstock pipes.

7. MECHANICAL ENERGY
 The total mechanical energy of an
object is the sum of its potential energy
and kinetic energy.
 Mechanical energy = Potential energy
+ Kinetic energy.

8. LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY
Energy can only be
converted from one form to
another. It can neither be
created nor destroyed.
