2. TOPIC:
SCIENCE EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS
WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS:
SLOW LEARNERS, FAST LEARNERS,
SCIENTIFICALLY GIFTED AND CREATIVE
LEARNERS.
3. INTRODUCTION
Exceptional children are those children who deviate significantly from the normal ones
.in other words children who show a considerable deviation from what is supposed to be
the normal or average to their group are labeled as exceptional children. this deviation
may fall on either end and therefore the exceptional may be significantly below average
or above average in the various aspects of human growth and development. Such children
are so exceptionally inferior or superior to the normal children in terms of physical
development, mental ability, social behavior and emotional reactions that they experience
a sort of maladjustment in life. They need special care and education for their proper
adjustment and maximum utilization of their abilities.
The children who are slow learners, fast learners, scientifically gifted and
creative learners –all belong to the general class of exceptional children.
SLOW LEARNERS
Slow learners have the same potential as bright students, but they probably differ in what
they know, in their motivation, in their persistence in the force of academic setbacks and
in their self image as students. it can be defined as
“Backwardness is applied to causes where their education attainment falls below the level
of their natural abilities”
PROBLEMS OF BACKWARDS CHILD
1. Backward child has the adjustment problems in regular classes.
2. He lacks motivations to learn.
3. He has become failure oriented because of repeated defeats and thus no longer
believes himself capable of learning.
4. The material, he is assigned, has not been made meaningful to him, so he sees
little purpose in learning it.
4. 5. He is flooded with anxiety produced by the defenses he has created against self
devaluation.
6. He is bitter and hostile towards school and society because of the humiliation be
has suffered.
Some ways that can help slow learners are:
1. Praise effort, not ability.
2. Tell that hard work pays off:
3. Treat failure as a natural part of learning.
4. Do not take study skills for granted.
5. Catching up is the long term goal.
Identification of slow learners
Teachers observation
Intelligence test
Achievement test
Personality inventory and case history.
FAST LEARNERS
Fast learners have evident high attainment in academic subjects; ‘talented’ pupils
have evident high attainment or latent high ability in a creative or expressive art or a
sport.
Identification of fast of fast learners
ability in one of the academic subjects
talent in art , music ,sport or creative arts
all round ability
strong curiosity about objects and environments
interest in collecting , sorting and classifying objects
high interest in investigating scientific phenomena.
5. Intense interest in one particular area of science to the exclusion of
other topics
Good powers of concentration
Developing science activities for fast learners
Higher level thinking
Creativity
Independence in learning
Group work
Peer tutoring
Inquiry skills
GIFTED AND CREATIVE CHILDREN
Gifted children are exceptional children, each with their own innate specific
capacity to excel in domains commensurate with their intellectual capacity .although
most children show strength of intellect or performance in some areas, the gifted child
has been defined by various authors .according to Havinghurst “ the talented or gifted
child is one who shows consistently remarkable performance in any worthwhile line of
endeavour”
Gifted children are always creative. Creativity refers to the ability to express
useful ideas, to sense and importance relationships and to ask previously unthought-of
but crucial questions ,gifted children can be defined for purposes of education as those
children who demonstrate or manifest potential for high ability including high
intelligence , high creativity and high task commitment
Identification of gifted and creative children
Group test of intelligence
School marks and cumulative records of pupil’s achievement
6. Teacher’s observation
CLASS ROOM STRATEGIES FOR NURTURING GIFTED AND
CREATIVE CHILDREN
Learning contracts
Individual timetable
Ability pairing
Grouping according to ability, learning style, interest, mutual support .
Older tutor , adult mentor
Use of self teaching instructional materials multimedia, self pacing
Interest center
Involvement in extra class competitions etc
Open ended projects
CONCLUSION
The exceptional children are so exceptionally inferior or superior to the normal
children in terms of physical development, mental ability, social behavior and emotional
reactions that they experience a sort of maladjustment in life .they need special care and
education for their proper adjustment and maximum utilization of their abilities
