2. • INTRODUCTION
Telecommunications are the means of electronic transmission of
information over distances. The information may be in the form
of voice telephone calls, data, text, images, or video.
Telecommunication links that form a channel through which
information is transmitted from a sender or sending device to a
receiving device , it also includes the uses of electronic devices
such as telegraphs in past , telephones, teleprinters , the use of
radio and microwave communication , as well as the fiber
optics and there associated electronics and plus using the
orbiting satellite and the internet.

5. • The Telecommunications Ordinance of 1994 created
the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA),
Pakistan's first independent telecommunications
regulator, and the Pakistan Telecommunication
Company Ltd(PTCL), a state-owned monopoly.
• Due to a lack of competition, local telephone call rates
were high and international call rates were even higher.
During the 1990s, a call to United States cost $5 per
minute (300PkRs per minute), which was not
affordable for the majority of the population. In
addition, customer service was poor; fixing a problem
might take an average of 10 to 15 days. Despite this,
consumers had to stick with PTCL, as they had no other
options.
6. In July 2003 the government introduced a Deregulation Policy for the Telecommunication
Sector.
7. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) (1996)
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is the telecommunication
regulator of Pakistan, responsible for the establishment,
operation and maintenance of telecommunication systems and
the provision of telecommunication services in Pakistan.
8. Instaphone was Pakistan's first mobile communication service. It was
launched by M/s Pakcom Ltd., a telecommunications company and the
industry pioneer in the country. The company was jointly owned by
M/s Arfeen and Millicom International (Luxembourg) and was acquired
later by the Arfeen Group

• The telecom sector contributed an estimated Rs 97.7 billion to the national exchequer in terms of
taxes, regulatory fees, initial and annual license fees, activation taxes and other charges during
July-December FY 2021, says the Economic Survey 2020-21.
• Increasingly revenues, growing investment and enhanced contributions to the national exchequer
are hallmarks of the sector for many years now.
• During July 2012 to February 2021, the telecom sector has attracted over $3.9 billion of the FDI.
• The Foreign Direct Investment in telecom during July-February fiscal year 2021 was $101.1
million.
• The main driver behind this investment is the cellular mobile sector, which has invested $253.5
million during the period.
• The overall investment in the telecom sector during the 1st eight months of fiscal year 2021
crossed $ 465 million. Telecom sector is a significant source of revenue generation for the national
exchequer.
• The telecom sector’s contribution (including the PTA deposits) to the national exchequer
registered 129 percent growth in fiscal year 2021.
• The International Telecommunication Union reported decline of 5-10 percent in telecom sector
revenue across countries owing to the Covid-19.
• Pakistan was no exception in FY 2021, as telecom sector revenue declined to Rs 541.4 billion,
which was 4.1 percent less as compared to last year.
• Revenues from telecom sector in two quarters 2021 reached an estimated Rs276.0 billion.

12. Formerly known as Mobilink, the company was founded in 1994 as a joint
venture between Saif Group and Motorola Inc. In February 2001, Egypt based
Orascom Telecom Holding bought Motorola’s shares in Mobilink to become the
majority shareholder with 69% control. Then in June 2007, Orascom further
purchased the remaining shares under Saif Group’s control to become Mobilink’s
100% owner.
In 2010, Russian operator Vimpelcom (now VEON Ltd.) agreed to acquire most
of the telecom assets of Orascom, including Mobilink, in a $6.5 billion deal,
creating the world’s fifth-largest mobile network operator by subscriber base.
In November 2015, Vimpelcom announced the 100% acquisition of Pakistan’s
Warid Telecom, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Group. Completed in July 2016 after
due approvals, the first-ever local telecom company acquisition created a
combined subscriber base of 50 million. Following this merger, Mobilink was
officially rebranded to Jazz in 2017

operations in January 2001 under the brand name “ufone”.
In 2006 ufone become a part of the Emirates Telecommunication
corporation group(Etisalat), because of PTCL privatization.
