A Basic Overview of the Danielson Framework for Evaluation_080813

  1. 1. A Basic Overview of the Danielson Framework for Evaluation Simple K12.com webinar - 8/8/13 Chris Casal Technology Coordinator/Teacher P. S. 10 Brooklyn (15K010) ccasal@ps10.org Twitter: @mr_casal Thursday, August 8, 13
  2. 2. The Framework In full ~109 pages: http:// www.danielsongroup.org/ userfiles/files/downloads/ 2013EvaluationInstrument. pdf Many states & districts adapting as they adopt Thursday, August 8, 13
  3. 3. Danielson Group Educational consultancy group Founded & driven by Charlotte Danielson specializes in teacher effectiveness, teacher evaluation systems & methods of ensuring teacher quality Danielson Framework a research-based set of components of instruction, aligned to the INTASC standards, and grounded in a constructivist view of learning and teaching. The complex activity of teaching is divided into 22 components (and 76 smaller elements) clustered into four domains of teaching responsibility: 1. Planning and Preparation 2. Classroom Environment 3. Instruction 4. Professional Responsibilities http://www.danielsongroup.org/article.aspx?page=frameworkforteaching Thursday, August 8, 13
  4. 4. Danielson Framework Originally published in 1996 Enhancing Professional Practice: a Framework for Teaching by ASCD based on research in Praxis III: Classroom Performance Assessments of an observation-based evaluation of first-year teachers used for the purpose of licensing Updated in 2007 & enhanced to reflect findings in research post-1996 Included frameworks for non-classroom positions such as librarians & counselors, tailored to the different responsibilities & expectation of those different roles Thursday, August 8, 13
  5. 5. Danielson Framework 2011 Edition includes research from 2009 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation “Measures of Effective Teaching (MET)” projects video capture & analysis of over 23,000 lessons aim to determine aspects of teacher practice most highly correlated to high student progress Thursday, August 8, 13
  6. 6. Danielson Framework 2011 Edition Danielson Framework part of MET research more specific rubric language “critical attributes” for each level of each component possible examples for each level Thursday, August 8, 13
  7. 7. 2013 Edition In addition to tighter language to assist evaluators in making clear distinctions between performance levels, the 2013 Edition now includes specific language around the instructional implications of the Common Core State Standards. The Framework for Teaching has always been grounded in student learning and included the big concepts of the Common Core. Now the 2013 Edition includes specific rubric language, critical attributes, and teaching and learning examples that help schools and districts identify instruction that leads to student learning in the context of the Common Core. http://usny.nysed.gov/rttt/teachers-leaders/practicerubrics/Docs/danielson-teacher-rubric.pdf Thursday, August 8, 13
