The document discusses the LGBTQIA+ community. It begins by defining LGBTQIA+ and explaining that this minority group has existed throughout history but has become more prominent since the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. The Stonewall riots occurred when members of the LGBT community resisted a police raid at the Stonewall Inn and were a pivotal moment in the gay rights movement. The community strives for acceptance and equality through consistent peaceful protests, celebrations, and political figures like Harvey Milk who advocated on their behalf. While acceptance has increased in some developed nations, the fight for equality continues in more conservative areas of the world.
2. What is LGBTQIA+
• LGBTQIA+ stands for ‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer,
Intersex, Asexual and others’.
• The LGBTQIA+ community is an example of a minority group that is
spread across the world. This group has existed for all of time but has
only recently surfaced due to the stonewall riots in the late 1960’s
•
3. The Stonewall riots
• The Stonewall riots took place on the 28th June 1969. This occurred
due to an outbreak of violence between the police and members of
the LGBT community in the Stonewall inn.
• The people had retaliated to a series of city sanctioned harassment
from the police department. These riots lasted for just 45 minutes on
that day with over 400 attendees and resumed for the next few
nights.
• Since then Stonewall has been a symbol of the LGBTQIA+ community
uprising and has given people the confidence to come out as gay.
4. Consistency
• The LGBT+ community is consistent in their rally to be valued in the
same way that heterosexuals are and for their love to be accepted as
a regular concept despite not following the regular ‘standards’ of
love.
• They consistently focus on having peaceful protests so that they so
not disturb the order of society
5. Commitment
• The community is devoted to being accepted by the world and they
try to ascertain this acceptance through peaceful protests, spreading
awareness through posters and websites as well as through
celebrations such as Gay Pride parade which is celebrated in
numerous countries for days at a time.
• One specific member of the LGBT+ community who was committed to
the acceptance of homosexuality was American politician Harvey
Milk. He was a gay icon across the world who organised several
marches and influenced people to be comfortable to share their
sexuality with the world.
6. Flexibility
• The LGBT community is incredibly tolerant of others who are not
accepting of the group in today’s society
• In the 1950-60s there was a social rebellion against society and its
social norms – this consisted of opening up about their sexuality.
• Another way in which the community is tolerant is their acceptance
into the church. Most denominations of Christianity still do not accept
the LGBT+ community along with other religions.
• Despite not being accepted into a lot of churches they respect the
choice of the church and its criteria.
7. LGBTQIA+ community now
• In the modern day there are approx. 8 million people across the globe
who make up the LGBT+ community and counting (3.5% of the
world’s population.)
• Homosexuality is generally more accepted in the developed nations
where there are bills passed approving of gay marriage. For example
in 2010 it was approved in England and in 2015 for the USA.
• In 3rd world countries the fight for equality continues for example in
the middle east, it is not accepted and it in fact punishable by death
just for being of a different sexual orientation.
