Behind The Circus Research Paper
BEHIND THE BIG TOP
Have you ever been to a circus? Traveling shows are famous for their colorful tents, crowded atmosphere, and comical acts. Most of all, they are
loved for their animals. Dogs ride unicycles and dress up as clowns; seals wear makeup and balance balls on their noses; elephants, horses, and cats
perform dances for the entertainment of the crowd. But what is really going on behind the painted smiles and frilly costumes? Many circuses have long
bloody histories of animal neglect and abuse, unbeknownst by the adoring children who watch with awe. Circuses all over the world are inhumane in
their treatment of animals, keeping wild animals in close confines, regularly abusing their animals, and withholding veterinary services when needed. ...

But how is this traveling done? Many big tops have trains they use to transport their actors, equipment, and animals. Cars are often dirty,
non–ventilated, and small. Animals are kept in these circumstances for days on end. Large creatures such as elephants and gorillas are kept in small
cages, eating, sleeping, defecating, and urinating in the same place. Big cats are often kept in small cages where they can barely turn around, often
two to a cage. And since many shows are traveling thousands of miles, eleven months a year, the performing animals spend huge amounts of time in
these cramped, filthy spaces; it is no wonder their health is often very poor. In July 2004, a young lion named Clyde from the Ringling Brothers circus
died a horrible death of heatstroke in a train car where the temperature reached over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (PETA Circuses 1). His death could have
been avoided if the car had been outfitted with proper ventilation

The Opening of Baz Lurhmann's Film Adaptation of Romeo and...
The Opening of Baz Lurhmann's Film Adaptation of Romeo and Juliet In 1997, Baz Lurhmann adapted a modern stylish version of ' Romeo and Juliet'
which was originally made in the 16th century. Using certain techniques, Baz Lurhmann has made this modified version thrilling and unforgettable.
Throughout this essay I will analyse the different techniques Baz Lurhman has used to make this film adaptation effective. Set in Los Angeles, there
are two rivals, the Montague's and the Capulates. Being the most powerful and well known enemies in Los Angeles they create war and dispute. The
scene is set in Los Angeles, in a small suburb. The town itself is modern and stylish. Lurhman uses Mis en scene to... Show more content on

The director has used this shot to create suspense and tension. By focussing on the sign it gives emphasis and meaning. This immediately gets the
audience thinking and creates deep effect because the audience is getting into the film and makes them think and feel tension. In contrast Lurhmann
uses a low angle shot to great effect. He is focussing on the helicopter in the air, the effect this has shows the audience that the prince; someone
important is arriving therefore its as if we look up to him, however this can make the audience feel small and vulnerable. The next technique I will
be focussing on is editing and shot transitions. In the first scene we see the introduction on ' Romeo and Juliet' with voices talking and background
music. Then a wipe out edit is used to introduce the Montague boys who are in their car. The effect this has is that it reduces tension; because during
the introduction it was building up by continuous flicking shots, which created a sense of tension, then it all stops and focuses on the Capulate boys
which then reduces the tension. As a result it also introduces comedy and creates a slightly more calm effect. Another type of edit Lurhmann uses is
a freeze frame. This is used on several occasions, one of them being as the camera focuses on Capulates heel and slowly moves up the body, where
the freeze frame is focussed on Capulates face. This

Speech On Exotic Animals
Every child has asked their parents for a pet animal. The thing is though, is what type of animal they asked for. Such as a dog or cat and even the
occasional hippopotamus for Christmas, right? Lots of people buy exotic animals not knowing how much work it really takes to take care of
them. For example, many people have bought pythons and when they get to a size where they can't keep care of them they let them go into the
wild. Exotic animals are very costly and time consuming, they grow up and get bigger and all in all they are very dangerous. As kids we all see a

Many people believe that it is okay to have a wild animal in your house. But some people also believe that most individuals that have animals should
be properly trained. In REXANO it states, "In the last 10–16 years, 1.5 people on average gets killed yearly by captive reptiles, 1 by captive big cat,
0.81 by captive elephant, 0.125 by captive bear and 0 by captive nonhuman primate"(REXANO). With this stated not many people die, but in all of
this it says captive over and over again. Lots of these animals have probably taken these individual lives because they have been held captive for so
long. Exotic pets do not deserve to be held in a cage all day, they should be able to be in the wild where they belong. Another piece of evidence found
in REXANO is, "Animals are personal property; and we oppose legislation that restricts the private ownership or use of animals" (REXANO). Lots of
exotic pet owners believe that because they have bought the animal, means that it is theirs and there is nothing anyone can do. But when you live with
neighbors around you and your animal goes missing or it's being disruptive they can take matters into their own hands. Exotic animals are too much of
a disturbance to communities and dangerous in some areas. If they get out who knows what would happen, and that's why exotic pets should not be

Comparing Two Literary Texts
Canonical texts are regarded as being well written texts which reflect aspects of how life is influenced by social historical and cultural beliefs. They
explore how different characteristics such as religion, poverty, social classes and perspectives can influence people over time and in different

Cheetahs
A cheetah can run up to 112 to 120 km/h (70 to 75 mph) in short bursts covering distances up to 500 m (1,600 ft). Also they can reach from 0 to 62
mph in three seconds. The closest thing to the cheetahs family is the puma. This cat is known for its speed and the way it run and reaches its speed in
such a short time. The tail of the cheetah help it when it run because while it runs if it has to turn really fast because if its prey the tail balance it out,

Breakfast At Tiffany's And The Great Gatsby Analysis
Both Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's and Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby illustrate that when one centers their life upon the propriety and luxury that a
traditionalistic lifestyle supports, they will repress into the comfort of their money and fail to progress towards the American Dream. Fitzgerald argues
that the modernist's ambition towards a singular focused dream will lead to feelings of unfulfillment, though Capote counters that the modernists
inability to find satisfaction within their life will allow opportunities to pass them by.
Both Jose and Daisy have a hard time associating with the self–made class, as they lack the propriety and caution that satisfies the wealthy elitists. Jose
was born into the wealthy class with aspirations to one day become president of his home country Brazil. Holly appears to love Jose, though her
interpretation of love is flighty, but feels that he is not her ideal lover because "he worries what people think," and is afraid to be under public
scrutiny. Holly notices how he "always turns his back to get dressed," as his traditionalistic habits overly concern him with acting proper, even
instilling fear within him to show skin in the confines of his own bedroom. As an elite, he has an image to obtain and in order to do so, he must
remain "too prim, too cautious," afraid to take a risk and possibly further himself because it is easier to reside in the safety of his money (Capote 65).
To love a wild girl like Holly would involve Jose to trust

Descriptive Concert
Up until this moment, I had never been to a concert from my favorite band. This concert would be one of the best moments of my life. The concert
took place at the Oregon state fairgrounds in Salem, Oregon. It was during the time when the annual state fair was taking place. The sky was filled
with clouds that only allowed the sun to peek through on occasion. Sweat drips down our faces just by standing outside in the humid air. Walking into
the fairgrounds dirt, and musty smells surrounded the senses. Looking to the left and right, crowds of people were surrounding barn animals to be able
to pet and feed them. The strong scent of manure settled in our noses and pushed us to walk farther into the fair at a quickened pace. We walked
through an area that resembled a saturday market. Booths were set up and the people inside them smiled brightly at us with clearly hidden intentions
behind their smiles. Sounds of people chattering amongst themselves floated through the air making it hard to hear the person standing next to you. As
we rushed through the crowd people cut in front of us causing our group to get split up several times. Looking above us a fairlift was moving people
from far ends of the park. Legs could be seen swing forward and back as they enjoyed staring at the ants below them. We rushed forward to get to the
amphitheater as quickly as we could. When we arrived at the amphitheatre we are forced to slow to a sluggish pace as people filled the amphitheatre

Grapes Of Wrath By John Steinbeck
Gabriella Borges Lehman, 2nd AP Lang Comp August 20, 2014 Grapes of Wrath Essay The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, is set in post Dust
Bowl tragedy, or the "Dirty Thirties", when families were forced to move West in search of jobs when their land was taken from them by the banks
and their tractors. Throughout the book, Steinbeck uses a set of intercalary chapters that are woven in between chapters expressing subtle themes, while
still having connections to the main story following the Joad family (and company). Symbols, themes, and motifs connect both the intercalary and the
narrative chapters together from the beginning to the end of the book. Steinbeck included many symbols that acted as vessels for themes about
humanity and its cruelty, faith, family, dignity, leadership, and endurance. Through loss, hardship, and hunger, the Joads journey West to California
with hopes of a better life and a chance to start anew. The story begins with Tom Joad, fresh out of McAlester State Penitentiary and headed for home
in Oklahoma. Though he was given seven years of confinement for a homicide conviction, despite it being in self defense, he only completed four
years due to the state granting him parole. They released him with new attire, including shoes and hat, so attention is drawn to him when he enters
town looking for a ride to his family's farm. In the following chapter, a turtle struggles to cross a busy street. Before he even steps foot on the road, he

Cold Water: A Short Story
The cool air swept past me, blowing my thick, long, mousy brown hair into my bright green eyes, obstructing my vision. I hastily spat the straying
hairs out of my mouth as I stared intently into the thick, dark forest. Coldwater was a small town, only about 650 people; everyone knew
everyone, what they were doing, who they were seeing, the gossip of the town. Over the years only a few people ever went missing and when they
did, it was when they ran into the forest, a death wish if you ask me. Some say that they were going crazy, some that they were chronically
depressed, but I disagree, to me it was because they were curious. The first one to run, Zack Tate, I think his name was, I'll never know why he ran

Wild Cat Falling Analysis
English Good Copy In this society, literature plays a major part in schools around the country and for many generations. Literature has helped create a
social norm in today's society, such as marginalisation of the indigenous Australians. Marginalisation is the treatment of a person group or concept that
is seen as insignificant, and this is shown throughout different types of literature that schools provide. Among some of the literature includes the novel
of wild cat falling which presents marginalisation as the novels main theme. Wild cat falling was written by Mudrooroo, also known as Colin Thomas
Johnson, an Aboriginal novelist who is best known for his work on the novel Wild cat falling. The novel was published in 1965 and tells the story...

Wildcat suffers from nightmares from his childhood, one of those dreams include wildcat encountering a native who is narrating the traditional
dreamtime story of the wildcat. The native states "Keep your cat–crow eyes on the swelling, bright face of the moon. Not down. Not down. But the old
earth is pulling you...it is a trick. Have to have wings to reach for the moon." (Pg. 127) In Wildcats dream, he is trying to reach the moon, which
can be turned into the status of the white people, as wildcats is constantly trying to reach the status of the white people but he can never reach his
goal, while the earth continues to pull him down, and this can be seen as his heritage as well. The story also mentions a lack of wings; this is seen
as his lack of having what he needs to fit in with society, this lack of wings also gives the sense of falling, falling into a pit of true despair and
depression. Here, Johnson's opinions on emotional marginalisation are seen quite subtly in a manner that is sophisticated and encourages readers to
look at marginalisation in a broader way. Throughout the novel mudrooroo places many flashbacks in wildcats point of view, this is seen as showing
how unstable wildcats mind is and how absent his sense of his identity is. The use of these flashbacks compels readers to understand the hurt and
confusion isolating an individual can cause. Wildcats use of referring himself in the

and that's not including all the food and supply. So if a dog cost that much just image what an exotic animal would cost. In Mia Lewis's, Do You
Really Want a Baby Tiger? She states "You have to build a sturdy cage or enclosure that is the appropriate size and the right hiding, resting, climbing,
and play space to approximate the animals natural habitat"(Lewis). With this evidence the amount of land that would be taken up would be about four
or five acres of land, to keep the animal happy. And if you have more land that means more money being spent. Another reason why exotic animals can
be time consuming and expensive is that they grow up. Mia Lewis states that " Keep in mind that that pet ownership is a lifetime commitment. Jenney's

How Does Rainsford Use Deception In The Most Dangerous Game
Stranded, lost, and alone is how Sanger Rainsford felt as he scaled the rocky cliffs of the island. The Most Dangerous Game is a short story written
by Richard Connell and published on January 19, 1924. Sanger Rainsford a legendary hunter falls overboard off a yacht on his way to the Amazon. He
finds himself on `Ship–Trap Island` where he meets General Zaroff the owner of a mansion on the island and Ivan his servant. General Zaroff invites
Sanger Rainsford to hunt with him. Rainsford is disgusted and sickened at the fact that General Zaroff's idea of hunting means hunting humans. In
return for his passage off the island Zaroff forces Rainsford to participate in his hunting game where he is the hunter and Rainsford is the prey. The

For example, his bizarreness and ruthlessness are shown when he says ""I had to invent a new animal to hunt,"" (pg12). Zaroff had become bored
with hunting animals because he always caught his prey. He introduced his cruel new hunting game as if it were not unusual at all. An illustration, of
his unsympathetic and uncivilized characteristics, are when he is telling Rainsford ""I wanted the ideal animal to hunt," explained the general. "So I
said, `What are the attributes of an ideal quarry?' And the answer was, of course, `It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to
reason"" (pg12). Zaroff is talking about hunting a human being and he is showing no feelings or remorse about it. He showed a total lack of
compassion when describing his new animal to hunt which is a human. Lastly, when he talks about his game ""You'll find this game worth playing,"
the general said enthusiastically"" (pg16), shows his coldheartedness and cruelness to others. Zaroff is comparing a game of chess to the killing of
another human. He is very excited and enthusiastic about the thoughts of hunting a human being. Throughout the story, Zaroff's cruel and inhuman
characteristics are shown by the way he talked to Rainsford about his hunting of humans. He shows no compassion and is actually excited about the

Exotic Animals Research Paper
Exotic animals are known to be dangerous predators. They travel across vast areas and take every opportunity to devour their prey. Meanwhile, the
average pet gets out of its cage and consumes a small meal provided by its owner. The pet is certainly easier to manage than the exotic creature.
However, some people own and keep said exotic animals as pets. This decision is an enormous risk to the owner and the animal in captivity. Owning an
exotic pet can be harmful to the owner. Even as cubs, the animals are extremely unpredictable. According opt the article, "They are wild animals with
wild animal instincts, even when born in captivity." (Lewis, lines 39–40). These beasts were not designed to live in a confined area. Also, if these
animals were to escape from their owners, it would result in the public being harmed. Keeping an exotic animal can pose a threat to its owner and
their wallet. Owning a wild animal is expensive and the creature requires an immense amount of care. The author from the article, "Do You Really

introduced as pets.
In summary, owning an exotic pet should not be allowed considering that it is quite expensive to manage one. It is also deleterious to the animal if its
needs are not met. Additionally, the animal can rebel due to being malnourished and harm the public. These vicious predators should be able to roam
grand areas instead of being confined into a measly

Alice In Wonderland Essay
As we read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Island of Dr. Moreau, we enter into two unique worlds of imagination. Both Lewis Carroll and
H.G. Wells describe lands of intrigue and mystery. We follow Alice and Prendick into two different worlds where animals speak, evolution is tested,
and reality is bent until it nearly breaks. It is the masterminds of Lewis Carroll and H.G. Wellsthat take these worlds of fantasy and make them realistic.
How do these two great authors make the unbelievable believable? Both Alice's Adventures in Wonderlandand The Island of Dr. Moreau float in
between a dream world and reality, which makes the real seem unbelievable and the unbelievable seem real.

It is later in the story, where reality really becomes deformed. First, Prendick is locked out of the inner rooms of the enclosure, because of their
"little secrets." Second, Prendick walks out into the woods to get away from the puma's crying. It is hear that he gets a good look at one of the
deformities for the first time. "Then I saw it was a man, going on all fours like a beast! (pg. 38)." It is this sight that sends Prendick"s imagination
wild. "The thicket about me became altered to my imagination. Every shadow became something more than a shadow, became an ambush, every
rustle became a threat. Invisible things seemed watching me (pg. 39)." It is these emotions of Prendick's that make the unbelievable seem real. He
has gone from a sane man with some studies in science to a man who fears the shadows and sees men walk on all fours. The dream state of everything
at this time keeps us believing that anything is possible.
This is the same technique that Lewis Carroll uses in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The story begins with Alice getting tired, which implies that
she is falling asleep and going to enter the fantastic world of dreams. Immediately, she sees a white rabbit in a waistcoat. This puts the reader directly
into the world of fantasy and imagination. It is Carroll's use of explanations that makes this unbelievable world seem real. No matter how strange

Wild Cat Falling Belonging Analysis
"How are Australian identity and culture represented in the texts you have studied?" While some texts choose to represent the Australian landscape as
being harsh and untamed, others appear to present them in a more positive fashion. However, when we get to the heart of each text, it's context and
purpose we find a common theme of connection with the land within them. In this analysis I will be using Wild Cat Falling by Mudrooroo, My
Country by Dorothea Mackellar and The Drovers Wife by Henry Lawson. Wild Cat falling represents the main character as having a disconnection with
the Australian landscape, which leads to him having an identity crisis, not knowing where he belongs. My Country represents the authors connection
with the bush landscape,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this text the main character feels detached form the bush landscape and drawn to the city landscape, particularly the university, but even there he
struggles to belong. On page 92 the main charter quotes "I believe in nothing it nobody, there is no refuge or comfort for me anywhere". This sentance
uses emotive language of hopelessness and disconnection to get the reader to respond on an emotional level and the readers emotional response from
that positions them to share the writers viewpoint. This technique is used in this text to convey the sense of rejection of his traditional connection to
the landscape that he refuses to believe that he has. The effect on the audience is that we feel a strange disconnection with the Australian landscape and
a feeling that we don't belong. On page 30 the main character quotes "on clear nights I could see the water alight under the space travelling moon and I
would feel detached from life". This statement is used to show that the main character has this feeling of detachment with his traditional homeland. The
effect of this is that we feel an atmosphere of regret and sadness, that something that sounds so great he feels rejected by and detached from. The
rejection and detachment of the landscape the main character feels in wild cat falling show an Identity of disconnection with the land some Australians

Animal Symbolism in Native Son by Richard Wright Essay
Animal Symbolism in Native Son by Richard Wright
Two rats and a cat are used as symbols in Richard Wright's Native Son. The rats, one found in an alley and the other in Bigger's apartment, symbolize
Bigger. Mrs. Dalton's white cat represents white society, which often takes the form of a singular character. "Parallels are drawn between these animals
and the characters they represent at key moments during the novel" (Kinnamon 118). These parallels help the reader identify with Bigger and
understand why he acts the way he does. The animal imagery in Native Son explains some of Bigger's behavior and generates sympathy for Bigger and
fear of whites.

Mrs. Dalton's discovery of Bigger is a serious threat to his life, which causes him to frantically search for safety. "He turned and a hysterical terror
seized him, as though he were falling from a great height...It was Mrs. Dalton. He wanted to knock her out of the way and bolt from the room" (Wright
97). Like the rat, Bigger is trapped and in danger, with no possibility for escape. In his last, desperate fight for survival, he suffocates Mary, similar to
the rat's wild leap for his pant leg.
The second rat enters the novel to remind readers that the desperate situation of the first rat is the same situation Bigger faces now. Bigger fears
for his life as he is trapped in the city with no escape after Mary's bones are discovered. His wild movement through the city streets is similar to the
first rat running in a circle, desperately searching for a place to hide. "He reeled through the streets, his bloodshot eyes looking for a place to hide.
He paused at a corner and saw a big black rat leaping over the snow. It shot past him into a doorway where it slid out of sight through a hole. He
looked wistfully at that gaping black hole through which the rat had darted to safety" (Wright 288). The second rat runs across the white snow the way
Bigger is running through the white–controlled city, both looking for safety. This rat serves as a reminder of the desperate circumstances that Bigger
faces.

Gender Stereotypes : Masculinity And Femininity
In children films, they makes assumptions of what male and female roles should be. It teaches kids early on that this is how you should act if you
fall into a certain gender role. These films reinforce our cultural definition of how we as a society defines masculinity and femininity. It is not
necessarily a right thing. But the idea of what a male and female characteristics should have and how they should act is so tightly bound to our western
views that it is hard to not have stereotyped gender roles. It is an awful truth, but it needs to be said that the influence of gender roles as a result,
influences what happens in children's movies. It is inevitable to not have stereotype gender roles in our society, because it is a fault that comes with
having any type society. We as an advanced westernized civilization have a very different definition of gender roles and what it means to be masculine
and feminine. In the article. "Gender Stereotypes: Masculinity and Femininity" we as a culture define femininity as "women being passive, dependent,
pure, refined and delicate" , but masculinity as men beginning "active, independent, coarse, and strong" . Culture dictates characteristics of what we
associate with each gender. For example in matrilineal societies like the Khasi of Meghalaya in India, the women in the family are more dominant and
the men are weaker. Also other cultures acknowledge multiple gender identities, like cross–gender working roles, transvestism, associations

Jenny's parents would tell her "No way" and stick to their guns." While the idea of owning an exotic animal as a pet can at first seem exciting and
daring, it is important to stop and consider the many disadvantages that can come about while owning an exotic animal as a pet. The two articles

Examples Of Psychological Forces In The Horse Dealer's...
Psychological Forces in "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" is a short story written by English author D.H. Lawrence. He
was known for exploring the psychological forces (such as instincts) behind our actions and for his vivid descriptions of the feelings of his characters,
and "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" is no exception. In fact, the two main characters in this story –Jack Fergusson and Mabel Pervin– are a clear
representation of Freud's drive theory forces, Eros and Thanatos. Furthermore, the author gives vivid descriptions in this story which let us know the
inner drives of both Jack and Mabel. To begin with, let's talk about Freud's drive theory forces, Eros and Thanatos. Thanatos is also known as the death
drive. It is the drive of masochism, destruction, aggression, and death (Freud 1920). Freud claimed that Thanatos often makes people behave in ways
that are unnatural, unreasonable, and go against the human instincts. In "The Horse Dealer's Daughter", Mabel clearly represents... Show more content

Lawrence described very vividly the battle between Jack's id, ego and superego: He was amazed, bewildered, and afraid. He had never thought of

The house cat has been a favored companion for many years. Their small size and independent tendencies makes them ideal pets for those who do not

My Mother, the Hippie

Chicken Little : A Short Story : Chicken Little's Story
"The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" cried Chicken Little. He scurried around the block waking the sleeping town hoping to get recognition for his
immanent concern. People shuffled, the squirrels in the tress hustled, and specs of light began to decorate the block and beat the sunrise. Chicken
Little was coming back from his morning jog, and was struck by a rigid, geometric slab of something hard as concrete that fell from a height higher
than the cookie cutters that decorated his block. His vision was smeared, and he pictured birds twiddling concentrically around his forehead. Cats,
bears, pigs, and porcupines peaked out like whack–a–moles from their windows to interrogate Chicken Little and his conspiring allegations. He heard
people scream questions "From where?! By who? Why?" and "How can we believe you!" He laid drained at his street corner hoping to recharge and
avoid getting struck by another piece of the falling sky, and his best friend, Trevor, approached him to help him home. He'd been with Chicken Little
since the beginning, and he was unimpressed by his impetuous calls for help or bizarre episodes. She lifted him from his upper arm to get him
back to walking straight and out of the way of embarrassment. "Chicken Little I need to get you home, you're clearly having another episode,"
exclaimed Trevor. "You're wrong Trevor! It's for real! This time it really is," replied Chicken Little. "Well, that's what you're always claiming, bud. Let's

mental disorder evident. He was known around the block as the hallucinating, psychotic, and paranoid bird to cry wolf (Hockenbury & Hockenbury,

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states that they need basking areas as they are most active when the temperatures reach between

Cats: Domestic Cat
The cat (or domestic cat, house cat) is a small domesticated carnivorous mammal. It is valued by humans for its companionship and its ability to
destroy vermin. A skilled predator, the cat is known to hunt over 1,000 species for food. Intelligent, the cat can be trained to obey simple commands,
and has been known to teach itself to manipulate simple mechanisms (see cat intelligence).
The trinomial name of the domestic cat is Felis silvestris catus. Its closest pre–domesticated ancestor is believed to be the African wild cat, Felis

Ears
Sixty–two individual muscles in the ear allow for a manner of directional hearing:[15] the cat can move each ear independently of the other. Because
of this mobility, a cat can move its body in one direction and point its ears in another direction. Most cats have straight ears pointing upward. Unlike
dogs, flap–eared breeds are extremely rare. (Scottish Folds are one such exceptional genetic mutation.) When angry or frightened, a cat will lay its
ears back, to accompany the growling or hissing sounds it makes. Cats will also turn their ears back when they are playing, or occasionally to show
interest in a sound coming from behind them.

Cats conserve energy by sleeping more than most animals, especially as they grow older. Daily durations of sleep vary, usually 12В–16 hours, with

Due to their crepuscular nature, cats are often known to enter a period of increased hyperactivity and playfulness during the evening and early

for our cats. We've always had (and still do) too many barn cats. The original idea was that we would have a few wild cats to keep the barn mice–free,
but I always tamed them and then they multiplied quickly. Each cat had a name, and they were an essential part to the Weiss household. ... Show more

Unfortunately, it's a little hard to do when there's nothing but corn and the occasional bean field. Nonetheless, Sam, my cousin, Jacob, and I would
do so anyways. Our typical journey involved walking the ditch banks in the field adjacent to our house. Once, we decided to do some actual
exploring, and walked in the ditches for hours. We walked until we had no idea where we were, and then we turned around. On the way back,
exhausted, we plopped down in the mud and then had a contest to see how high up we could throw a glob of mud. Although it may not sound like fun,
it was one of our favorite things to

Psychological Disorders In Lewis Carroll's Alice In...
"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary
wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?"– Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland. Furthermore, a desire for one to bend
the world as they see fit, even when what they see fit isn't meant to be. There are many ways to read the novel "Alice in Wonderland", it holds not one
point of view, but many which can be interpreted in several ways. Analyzed from the critical viewpoint of physiological, readers may discover some
interesting and remarkable surprises. The specific point I would like to discuss today are the physiological disorders this novel holds, such as the lunatic
Red Queen who was wrapped whole with narcissistic behaviors and personality disorders, the unimaginable feeling of loneliness portrayed throughout
Alice's adventure, and a dream anxiety disorder/psychosis or schizophrenia which represented itself as the actual story, viewed through the main
character Alice. To begin with, there are many characters in Alice in Wonderland, who, despite the normality in their world, are rather odd; all whom
which held a distinctive characteristic that revolved around all their actions, words, and surroundings. The Red Queen, who is described to have a
very large head, portrays a character who is full of herself, hence the size of the head; she frequently tends to put herself in a position in which she is

Human Culture Exploded With The Invention Of Agriculture
Human culture exploded with the invention of agriculture approximately 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent. For the first time, instead of
being largely nomadic, following herds of game animals through their migrations, humanity could settle down into permanent settlements. For the
first time since the dawn of man, not every waking hour revolved around food. Man finally had a large amount of leisure time, and energy to spare.
This energy went into the creation of vast cities and temples, great public works of art and engineering marvels. Less than 500 years after wheat
and barley were first grown by humans, we were brewing the first beers, and it was only up from there (O 'Neil). In the blink of an eye, empires
rose and fell again and again: Babylon, Egypt, Rome, Greece, and countless more. As these empires grew, they spread out. This spreading out
increased trade and globalization in ways never before heard of. Continents no longer connected by land became connected by people. Ships were sent
off to distant lands and returned with new plants and animals, many of which became the first invasive species. With no natural predators in their new
environment, these newcomers could quickly destabilize an ecosystem, and they often did. Muscles clinging to the hulls of ships could become
detached in foreign ports and establish a foothold on the ocean floor, quickly decimating the native marine flora and fauna. Rats which had stowed
away on the hulls of ships would sometimes

Behind The Circus Research Paper

  • 1. Behind The Circus Research Paper BEHIND THE BIG TOP Have you ever been to a circus? Traveling shows are famous for their colorful tents, crowded atmosphere, and comical acts. Most of all, they are loved for their animals. Dogs ride unicycles and dress up as clowns; seals wear makeup and balance balls on their noses; elephants, horses, and cats perform dances for the entertainment of the crowd. But what is really going on behind the painted smiles and frilly costumes? Many circuses have long bloody histories of animal neglect and abuse, unbeknownst by the adoring children who watch with awe. Circuses all over the world are inhumane in their treatment of animals, keeping wild animals in close confines, regularly abusing their animals, and withholding veterinary services when needed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But how is this traveling done? Many big tops have trains they use to transport their actors, equipment, and animals. Cars are often dirty, non–ventilated, and small. Animals are kept in these circumstances for days on end. Large creatures such as elephants and gorillas are kept in small cages, eating, sleeping, defecating, and urinating in the same place. Big cats are often kept in small cages where they can barely turn around, often two to a cage. And since many shows are traveling thousands of miles, eleven months a year, the performing animals spend huge amounts of time in these cramped, filthy spaces; it is no wonder their health is often very poor. In July 2004, a young lion named Clyde from the Ringling Brothers circus died a horrible death of heatstroke in a train car where the temperature reached over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (PETA Circuses 1). His death could have been avoided if the car had been outfitted with proper ventilation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Opening of Baz Lurhmann's Film Adaptation of Romeo and... The Opening of Baz Lurhmann's Film Adaptation of Romeo and Juliet In 1997, Baz Lurhmann adapted a modern stylish version of ' Romeo and Juliet' which was originally made in the 16th century. Using certain techniques, Baz Lurhmann has made this modified version thrilling and unforgettable. Throughout this essay I will analyse the different techniques Baz Lurhman has used to make this film adaptation effective. Set in Los Angeles, there are two rivals, the Montague's and the Capulates. Being the most powerful and well known enemies in Los Angeles they create war and dispute. The scene is set in Los Angeles, in a small suburb. The town itself is modern and stylish. Lurhman uses Mis en scene to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The director has used this shot to create suspense and tension. By focussing on the sign it gives emphasis and meaning. This immediately gets the audience thinking and creates deep effect because the audience is getting into the film and makes them think and feel tension. In contrast Lurhmann uses a low angle shot to great effect. He is focussing on the helicopter in the air, the effect this has shows the audience that the prince; someone important is arriving therefore its as if we look up to him, however this can make the audience feel small and vulnerable. The next technique I will be focussing on is editing and shot transitions. In the first scene we see the introduction on ' Romeo and Juliet' with voices talking and background music. Then a wipe out edit is used to introduce the Montague boys who are in their car. The effect this has is that it reduces tension; because during the introduction it was building up by continuous flicking shots, which created a sense of tension, then it all stops and focuses on the Capulate boys which then reduces the tension. As a result it also introduces comedy and creates a slightly more calm effect. Another type of edit Lurhmann uses is a freeze frame. This is used on several occasions, one of them being as the camera focuses on Capulates heel and slowly moves up the body, where the freeze frame is focussed on Capulates face. This ... • 3. Speech On Exotic Animals Every child has asked their parents for a pet animal. The thing is though, is what type of animal they asked for. Such as a dog or cat and even the occasional hippopotamus for Christmas, right? Lots of people buy exotic animals not knowing how much work it really takes to take care of them. For example, many people have bought pythons and when they get to a size where they can't keep care of them they let them go into the wild. Exotic animals are very costly and time consuming, they grow up and get bigger and all in all they are very dangerous. As kids we all see a puppy and say awww look at that adorable doggy mom, can we get it? Then they say no it's too expensive. On average a dog cost about 700 dollars and that's not including all the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people believe that it is okay to have a wild animal in your house. But some people also believe that most individuals that have animals should be properly trained. In REXANO it states, "In the last 10–16 years, 1.5 people on average gets killed yearly by captive reptiles, 1 by captive big cat, 0.81 by captive elephant, 0.125 by captive bear and 0 by captive nonhuman primate"(REXANO). With this stated not many people die, but in all of this it says captive over and over again. Lots of these animals have probably taken these individual lives because they have been held captive for so long. Exotic pets do not deserve to be held in a cage all day, they should be able to be in the wild where they belong. Another piece of evidence found in REXANO is, "Animals are personal property; and we oppose legislation that restricts the private ownership or use of animals" (REXANO). Lots of exotic pet owners believe that because they have bought the animal, means that it is theirs and there is nothing anyone can do. But when you live with neighbors around you and your animal goes missing or it's being disruptive they can take matters into their own hands. Exotic animals are too much of a disturbance to communities and dangerous in some areas. If they get out who knows what would happen, and that's why exotic pets should not be ... Chilling Stories Chilling Stories of Fake online identities and Why People Create Them Chilling Stories of Fake online identities and why people created by Patrick Smith was a head scratching and eye opening article. The article contained multiple events dealing with people that had to go through identity thief. Another article that covers new technology is "Can people trust the people you meet online''? by Gwendolyn Sediman. This article also gave us another point of view on how new technology can be used in a corrupt way. The average person wouldn't usually understand how dangerous new technology can be if the wrong person gets a terrible idea. New technology is expanding to new heights. It seems like everybody in today's society has a social media account or something dealing with the online world. The online world has created so many new opportunities that people wouldn't have if it never existed. People are online playing video games with their friends or with people they never met and they get a chance to talk and share information. It's the same thing with social media. • 7. Breakfast At Tiffany's And The Great Gatsby Analysis Both Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's and Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby illustrate that when one centers their life upon the propriety and luxury that a traditionalistic lifestyle supports, they will repress into the comfort of their money and fail to progress towards the American Dream. Fitzgerald argues that the modernist's ambition towards a singular focused dream will lead to feelings of unfulfillment, though Capote counters that the modernists inability to find satisfaction within their life will allow opportunities to pass them by. Both Jose and Daisy have a hard time associating with the self–made class, as they lack the propriety and caution that satisfies the wealthy elitists. Jose was born into the wealthy class with aspirations to one day become president of his home country Brazil. Holly appears to love Jose, though her interpretation of love is flighty, but feels that he is not her ideal lover because "he worries what people think," and is afraid to be under public scrutiny. Holly notices how he "always turns his back to get dressed," as his traditionalistic habits overly concern him with acting proper, even instilling fear within him to show skin in the confines of his own bedroom. As an elite, he has an image to obtain and in order to do so, he must remain "too prim, too cautious," afraid to take a risk and possibly further himself because it is easier to reside in the safety of his money (Capote 65). • 8. Descriptive Concert Up until this moment, I had never been to a concert from my favorite band. This concert would be one of the best moments of my life. The concert took place at the Oregon state fairgrounds in Salem, Oregon. It was during the time when the annual state fair was taking place. The sky was filled with clouds that only allowed the sun to peek through on occasion. Sweat drips down our faces just by standing outside in the humid air. Walking into the fairgrounds dirt, and musty smells surrounded the senses. Looking to the left and right, crowds of people were surrounding barn animals to be able to pet and feed them. The strong scent of manure settled in our noses and pushed us to walk farther into the fair at a quickened pace. We walked through an area that resembled a saturday market. Booths were set up and the people inside them smiled brightly at us with clearly hidden intentions behind their smiles. Sounds of people chattering amongst themselves floated through the air making it hard to hear the person standing next to you. As we rushed through the crowd people cut in front of us causing our group to get split up several times. Looking above us a fairlift was moving people from far ends of the park. Legs could be seen swing forward and back as they enjoyed staring at the ants below them. We rushed forward to get to the amphitheater as quickly as we could. • 9. Grapes Of Wrath By John Steinbeck Gabriella Borges Lehman, 2nd AP Lang Comp August 20, 2014 Grapes of Wrath Essay The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, is set in post Dust Bowl tragedy, or the "Dirty Thirties", when families were forced to move West in search of jobs when their land was taken from them by the banks and their tractors. Throughout the book, Steinbeck uses a set of intercalary chapters that are woven in between chapters expressing subtle themes, while still having connections to the main story following the Joad family (and company). Symbols, themes, and motifs connect both the intercalary and the narrative chapters together from the beginning to the end of the book. Steinbeck included many symbols that acted as vessels for themes about humanity and its cruelty, faith, family, dignity, leadership, and endurance. Through loss, hardship, and hunger, the Joads journey West to California with hopes of a better life and a chance to start anew. The story begins with Tom Joad, fresh out of McAlester State Penitentiary and headed for home in Oklahoma. Though he was given seven years of confinement for a homicide conviction, despite it being in self defense, he only completed four years due to the state granting him parole. They released him with new attire, including shoes and hat, so attention is drawn to him when he enters town looking for a ride to his family's farm. • 14. Wild Cat Falling Analysis English Good Copy In this society, literature plays a major part in schools around the country and for many generations. Literature has helped create a social norm in today's society, such as marginalisation of the indigenous Australians. Marginalisation is the treatment of a person group or concept that is seen as insignificant, and this is shown throughout different types of literature that schools provide. Among some of the literature includes the novel of wild cat falling which presents marginalisation as the novels main theme. Wild cat falling was written by Mudrooroo, also known as Colin Thomas Johnson, an Aboriginal novelist who is best known for his work on the novel Wild cat falling. Wildcat suffers from nightmares from his childhood, one of those dreams include wildcat encountering a native who is narrating the traditional dreamtime story of the wildcat. The native states "Keep your cat–crow eyes on the swelling, bright face of the moon. Not down. Not down. But the old earth is pulling you...it is a trick. Have to have wings to reach for the moon." (Pg. 127) In Wildcats dream, he is trying to reach the moon, which can be turned into the status of the white people, as wildcats is constantly trying to reach the status of the white people but he can never reach his goal, while the earth continues to pull him down, and this can be seen as his heritage as well. The story also mentions a lack of wings; this is seen as his lack of having what he needs to fit in with society, this lack of wings also gives the sense of falling, falling into a pit of true despair and depression. Here, Johnson's opinions on emotional marginalisation are seen quite subtly in a manner that is sophisticated and encourages readers to look at marginalisation in a broader way. Throughout the novel mudrooroo places many flashbacks in wildcats point of view, this is seen as showing how unstable wildcats mind is and how absent his sense of his identity is. The use of these flashbacks compels readers to understand the hurt and confusion isolating an individual can cause. Wildcats use of referring himself in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Argumentative Essay On Exotic Animals Every child has asked their parents for a pet animal. On average a dog cost about 700 dollars and that's not including all the food and supply. So if a dog cost that much just image what an exotic animal would cost. In Mia Lewis's, Do You Really Want a Baby Tiger? She states "You have to build a sturdy cage or enclosure that is the appropriate size and the right hiding, resting, climbing, and play space to approximate the animals natural habitat"(Lewis). With this evidence the amount of land that would be taken up would be about four or five acres of land, to keep the animal happy. And if you have more land that means more money being spent. Another reason why exotic animals can be time consuming and expensive is that they grow up. Mia Lewis states that " Keep in mind that that pet ownership is a lifetime commitment. An illustration, of his unsympathetic and uncivilized characteristics, are when he is telling Rainsford ""I wanted the ideal animal to hunt," explained the general. In this analysis I will be using Wild Cat Falling by Mudrooroo, My Country by Dorothea Mackellar and The Drovers Wife by Henry Lawson. • 25. Gender Stereotypes : Masculinity And Femininity In children films, they makes assumptions of what male and female roles should be. It teaches kids early on that this is how you should act if you fall into a certain gender role. These films reinforce our cultural definition of how we as a society defines masculinity and femininity. It is not necessarily a right thing. But the idea of what a male and female characteristics should have and how they should act is so tightly bound to our western views that it is hard to not have stereotyped gender roles. It is an awful truth, but it needs to be said that the influence of gender roles as a result, influences what happens in children's movies. It is inevitable to not have stereotype gender roles in our society, because it is a fault that comes with having any type society. We as an advanced westernized civilization have a very different definition of gender roles and what it means to be masculine and feminine. In the article. "Gender Stereotypes: Masculinity and Femininity" we as a culture define femininity as "women being passive, dependent, pure, refined and delicate" , but masculinity as men beginning "active, independent, coarse, and strong" . Culture dictates characteristics of what we associate with each gender. For example in matrilineal societies like the Khasi of Meghalaya in India, the women in the family are more dominant and the men are weaker. They remind her of the responsibilities that go along with pet ownership, responsibilities that she will have to follow no matter what; it'll grow up from the cute puppy it is now to a gnarly old dog. Jenny says she doesn't mind and soon Fido is welcomed into the family fold. In no time at all the parents love Fido just as much as Jenny does, and Fido loves them all back. But what if Jenny tried to persuade her parents to buy her a fuzzy lion cub she saw advertised, or a baby chimpanzee? If they had any sense, Jenny's parents would tell her "No way" and stick to their guns." While the idea of owning an exotic animal as a pet can at first seem exciting and daring, it is important to stop and consider the many disadvantages that can come about while owning an exotic animal as a pet. The two articles provided convey why private citizens should not be allowed to keep dangerous (exotic) animals as pets, owning an exotic animal as a pet can put the owner and those around them in danger, there are many responsibilities that come with owning an exotic animal as a pet that allot of people don't think about before buying one, and privately owning an exotic animal puts the animal's health and wellbeing at risk. • 27. Examples Of Psychological Forces In The Horse Dealer's... Psychological Forces in "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" is a short story written by English author D.H. Lawrence. He was known for exploring the psychological forces (such as instincts) behind our actions and for his vivid descriptions of the feelings of his characters, and "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" is no exception. In fact, the two main characters in this story –Jack Fergusson and Mabel Pervin– are a clear representation of Freud's drive theory forces, Eros and Thanatos. Furthermore, the author gives vivid descriptions in this story which let us know the inner drives of both Jack and Mabel. To begin with, let's talk about Freud's drive theory forces, Eros and Thanatos. Thanatos is also known as the death drive. It is the drive of masochism, destruction, aggression, and death (Freud 1920). Freud claimed that Thanatos often makes people behave in ways that are unnatural, unreasonable, and go against the human instincts. In "The Horse Dealer's Daughter", Mabel clearly represents... When he rescued her and restored her, he was a doctor, and she was a patient. He had had no single personal thought of her. Their fur coats protect them from cold, bug bites, stings, and other irritants, and can also be raised when frightened or threatened to seem larger in size (Foss, Stewart & Swift, 2008, p.10). Not easily seen are the sweat glands that cats only have on their paw pads (Foss, Stewart & Swift, 2008, p.11). • 31. Chicken Little : A Short Story : Chicken Little's Story "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" cried Chicken Little. He scurried around the block waking the sleeping town hoping to get recognition for his immanent concern. People shuffled, the squirrels in the tress hustled, and specs of light began to decorate the block and beat the sunrise. Chicken Little was coming back from his morning jog, and was struck by a rigid, geometric slab of something hard as concrete that fell from a height higher than the cookie cutters that decorated his block. His vision was smeared, and he pictured birds twiddling concentrically around his forehead. Cats, bears, pigs, and porcupines peaked out like whack–a–moles from their windows to interrogate Chicken Little and his conspiring allegations. He heard people scream questions "From where?! By who? Why?" and "How can we believe you!" He laid drained at his street corner hoping to recharge and avoid getting struck by another piece of the falling sky, and his best friend, Trevor, approached him to help him home. He'd been with Chicken Little since the beginning, and he was unimpressed by his impetuous calls for help or bizarre episodes. She lifted him from his upper arm to get him back to walking straight and out of the way of embarrassment. "Chicken Little I need to get you home, you're clearly having another episode," exclaimed Trevor. "You're wrong Trevor! It's for real! This time it really is," replied Chicken Little. "Well, that's what you're always claiming, bud. Let's get you home now, these people don't deserve to be woken up so early," said Trevor. This was clearly not the first –time Chicken Little had made his mental disorder evident. He was known around the block as the hallucinating, psychotic, and paranoid bird to cry wolf (Hockenbury & Hockenbury, 2010, p. 601). His episodes began during late adolescence, and it didn't help that his grandfather was his predecessor as the town lunatic (Hockenbury & Hockenbury, 2010, p. 606). Although, fortunately, Trevor has managed to stick around and do his best to get him out of harm's way. Chicken Little has long had the delusion that he is going to die in an apocalypse. For the first time, instead of being largely nomadic, following herds of game animals through their migrations, humanity could settle down into permanent settlements. For the first time since the dawn of man, not every waking hour revolved around food. Man finally had a large amount of leisure time, and energy to spare. This energy went into the creation of vast cities and temples, great public works of art and engineering marvels.
