Questionnaire Design Process
There are nine steps involved in the design of a questionnaire:
1. Decide the information required.
2. Define the target respondents.
3.Choose the method of reaching your target respondents
4.Decide on question content and form of responses.
5.Develop the question wording.
6.Put questions into a meaningful order and format.
7. Check the length of the questionnaire.
8.Pre-test the questionnaire and revise if necessary.
9. Develop the final survey form.
Types of Questionnaires
• Structured Questionnaire.
• Un Structured Questionnaire.
Types of Questions in a Questionnaire
• Open ended questions: no responses in advance.
• Close ended questions : a set of responses given in advance.
• Filter questions (or)Screening questions (or)Qualifying question: used to determine if a respondent qualifies as a
member of the defined population.
• Leading questions : A question framed so as to give the respondent a clue as to how he should give the answer.
• Double barreled questions: A question that calls for two responses and creates confusion for the respondent.
• Branching Questions: A technique used to direct the respondents where to go next in the questionnaire based on their
answer to the question at hand.
Precautions to be taken while preparing questionnaire
This is the most difficult part of developing a questionnaire. Here are some useful
rules of thumb to follow:
• Keep questions simple. double-barrelled and hypothetical questions, double-
barrelled questions being ones that ask two questions in one.
• Number of questions should be kept minimum
• In closed questions, allow the respondent the option of answering with ‘not
appropriate’, ‘don’t know’ or ‘have no strong feelings’. This helps the respondent
and avoids difficulties later in interpreting questions that have no responses.
• Avoid overly sensitive questions – you are unlikely to get a ‘true’ response
• avoid words that may have an ambiguous meaning
• Answers to question should not require calculations.
• Logical arrangement.
• Covering letter highlighting the purpose of the study
