Climate Programme for Finnish
Agriculture − Steps towards Climate
Friendly Food
• Latest research on mitigation and adaptation
• 76 different measures
• Significant number of measures are implemented under EU
Common Agricultural Policy: Rural Development Programme
• Wholefarm approach, not only gases from agriculture sector
(also energy, soil CO2)
• Adaptation a necessary element of sustainability
• The whole food system – both production and consumption
• Aims to integrate different policies
5. Main measures in production
1. Carbon sequestration into soil
2. Measures relating to the use of peatlands
3. Plant breeding
4. Plant and animal health and preventing the spread of
invasive alien species

7. Main measures in consumption
7. Reducing food loss and waste all through the food
system
8. Changes towards a more plant-based diet
8. Themes in the Food Strategy:
Nutrient recycling
• Agricultural nutrients (such as manure) should be
used more efficiently, a valuable resource, part of
circular economy
• EU targets for circular economy
9. Government project:
- conveys information on the funding possibilities related to
the recycling of nutrients
- promotes the networking and new experiments of nutrient
recycling operators
- conveys essential research knowledge to practical
operators
- collects information on the results of existing research and
experimental projects and new research needs
- identifies the bottlenecks in nutrient recycling and
facilitates their elimination 9

10. Themes in the Food Strategy
Public procurement
• Public food services are big providers of food, e.g. lunch at
schools
• Government Decision in Principle on Public Food
Procurement Criteria (environmentally friendly production
methods, food safety and animal welfare, also
enhancement of innovative procurement).
11. Themes in the Food Strategy:
Health and food
• Latest nutritional recommendations
from 2014
• For the first time is sustainable
food recognized
• More plant-based diet
recommended
• Plant protein, such as legumes,
important
