2. What is the function of the
human brain
• The human brain is the center of the nervous system.
• It controls how we think and react.
• The brain contains billions of nerve cells that send and receive
information around the body
• The human brain is over three times as big as the brain of
other mammals that are of similar body size
• Each side of the brain interacts largely with just one half of the
body.
4. The major parts of the brain and
It's function
• Cerebrum: This is the largest and most developed part of the
brain.
• The cerebrum is involved in several functions of the body
including:
• Determining Intelligence
• Determining Personality
• Thinking
• Perceiving
• Producing and Understanding Language
• Interpretation of Sensory Impulses
• Motor Function
• Planning and Organization
6. Cerebellum
• It is the part of the brain that that is responsible for human
movement, co-ordination, motor control and sensory
perception
• The cerebellum is responsible for relaying messages about
posture and equilibrium.
• The cerebellum also has some cognitive functions, such as
language and attention getting.
7. The brain Stem
• It is the region of the brain that connects the cerebrum and
the spinal chord together.
• The brain stem controls several things in the brain such as:
• Alertness
• Arousal
• Breathing
• Blood Pressure
• Digestion
• Heart rate
8. The Pituitary Gland
• It is divided into an anterior lobe, intermediate lobe and
posterior lobe, all of which are involved in hormone
production.
• Some of it's functions are as follows:
• Growth Hormone Production
• Production of Hormones That Act on Other Endocrine Glands
• Production of Hormones That Act on the Muscles and the
Kidneys
• Endocrine Function Regulation
• Storage of Hormones Produced by the Hypothalamus
9. Causes of brain damage
• There are many so many causes of brain damage and these
are some of the causes:
• Too much alcohol abuse: Too much alcohol intake can result in
the damage of the cerebellum. This because excessive intake
of the drug can result in slurred speech, loss of balance and
co-ordination.
• Genetics - A dysfunctional hereditary gene could have been
passed on to the offspring which prevented the full
development of a healthy brain
• Blow - A sufficient blow to the head can supersede the skulls
defenses (particularly at the temple) and can therefore allow
structural damage to occur.
10. Causes of brain damage
• Lack of Blood - Lack of blood to the brain can cause severe
problems for the cells associated with the brain. A human can
survive for four minutes without oxygen before the brain
damage becomes so severe there is no realistic chance of
survival.
• Tumors - Cancer has been a major non-infectious disease
more recognized over the last decade, and more cases of brain
tumor's are detected nowadays due to more sophisticated
techniques. The continued growth of these cancerous cells
puts pressure on the brain, which can cause a blood clot or
directly cause brain damage due to the pressure of the tumor
pressing against it
11. How to prevent Brain damage
• As human beings we know how our body reacts and feel so
we can try and prevent brain damage through the following:
• Exercise at three times a week.
• Make sure you buckle up every time you drive.
• Reduce the risk of falling
• Make sure to wear a protective head gear anytime you engage
in any contact sports.
• Also make sure to go for check-ups every two or three months
to make sure everything is alright in the body.
• Lastly avoid taking too much stress on yourself and reduce the
intake of alcohol.
