incarceration. Avoiding imprisonment does not translate to a lenient punitive sentence for the alternatives can just as easily repair harms to the victims,
provide benefits to the community, treat the drug addicted, and rehabilitate offenders (FAMM, 2013, p.1). The use of programs that offer an alternative
to incarceration can reduce the amount of people in the prison system that is living on taxpayers' dollars. The enlistment in the military is a viable
option as an alternative to incarceration. The goal of rehabilitation is a change in the behavior of the convict and the enlistment of said individual offers

who showed a definite achievement and had a positive attitude change. He also transferred prisoners into intermediate prisons after a period in a
strict imprisonment. When the prisoners were in the intermediate prisons they could then earn marks that would accumulate, these marks were
received for work performance, behavior, and improvement of education. By earning enough marks, the prisoners could receive their tickets of leave
and would be released on parole. Once on parole the new parolee was required to report to the police. The police would help the parolees find jobs

Introduction
Adult Probation, also known as community supervision is not a new concept that is occurring in today's criminal justice system in the United States. In
the year 1841, John Augustus introduces probation in the United States in Boston and later recognized as the "Father of Probation" (Petersilia, 1997).
John Augustus convinced a judge to release a drunkard into his custody to help the man find a job and become sober. After Augustus' success in his
first case, he began to offer his services to other individuals involved in criminal activity. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, approximately
267,400 Ohio residents were under community supervision at the end of 2013. With a high amount of individuals on probation in Ohio, the question

There are several steps to the criminal justice system, one of them is Probation; a program where the offender's freedom is limited; usually they have a
curfew, and have limits on the things they do. Probations Officers are a huge factor in getting the juvenile offender back on the right track following
their sentence. One of the problems with probation is that rather than helping the offenders, sometimes it can hurt them. Some scholars argue that the
officers do not take the juveniles, specifically females, seriously when it comes to referring them to receive mental health treatment. In contrast, other
scholars argue that Probation Officers are the key to connecting the offenders with mental health care. I will begin by talking about how the gender of

Court
I attended the Maricopa County Superior Court located at 222 E Javelina Ave, Mesa, AZ 85210. I went on Wednesday December 6, 2017 from 1pm
to 5pm. I attended both the criminal court in room 202 and family court in room 301. In the criminal court, I observed 9 different cases and in the
family court only 1 case. In the criminal courtroom, the Judge was Judge Barth and the state prosecutor was James Blair for all the cases. The
public defenders (PD) were different for most all the cases except some cases had the same PD in which none of them had more that 2 offenders
assigned to them at that day. The PD included, Resario Spaccaferro, Josephine Hallum, Kurt Harris, Asario Backafera, Robert Duffy, and Brian
Gardner. In the family court only the petitioner (the mom) had an attorney Charles Brown, and the respondent (the dad) represented himself. All
attorneys and PD were dressed in suits and the judges of course were in their black robes. The state prosecutor was also in a suit but had khaki pants
and a dark navy blazer.
Ease of Access
Walking up I noticed there was a giant white tubing in the middle of the parking lot that was draped over the wall and the court had orange cones
blocking the handicap ramp. Coming out this obstacle was no longer there. However, there is only one ramp and could have been a huge issue for
someone who needed ADA access to the courtroom. It looked as if it was a fire hose but no water or fire truck was in sight. Additionally, there is a bus
stop behind the court house in front of the juvenile court house. This makes it very easy for someone to access the courthouse through public

Probation Officers Should Be Legal
Probation officers wear many different hats; some are those that they never dreamed about when becoming an officer of the court. Probation officers
are the offenders' friend, confidant, mental health counselor or even a parent to an offender that may be just turning 18, who has not had a parent
influence. This feeling of someone looking out for the offender may make the offender feel more comfortable and willing to work with the officer.
However, the probation officer needs to be able to establish the relationship but keep it more of a professional relationship so the offender does not
become confused. Setting the standards and expectations with the offender may allow the offender to understand the limits and expectations. Often
times a probation officer needs to be able to sit down and speak to their offender on a personal level gaining the trust and respect of them. Probation is
defined as a suspension of a jail sentence, allowing the convicted person to remain within the community (FindLaw, 2015). Sometimes there is a
misunderstanding the difference between probation and parole. Probation allows the offender to not serve any jail time, while parole is a release from
prison on conditions allowing the offender to complete their sentence within the community. Probation has three primary goals to rehabilitate the
offender, protect society from further criminal conduct by the offender, and to protect the rights of victims (Probation, 2015).

Probation is a sentence that is given to offenders instead of jail. Probation comes in different forms and many different conditions; therefore, if you
