Remakes of films are a common occurrence. Sometimes remakes are incredible and introduce a
generation to great films of the past, however, sometimes they aim too high and miss the mark
completely. Scarface 1932 and Scarface 1983 is a great example of the latter. Scarface 1932 was the
first of its kind in many respects while Scarface 1983 fell short. While at the core of both of these
films they are the same, there are a few small plot discrepancies, but the message of the rise and fall
of a man is identical. Visually these films are nothing alike. Beyond the obvious use of color in the
1983 film, the lighting, spacing, and camera work are all different. Scarface 1932 was revolutionary
in its use of low key lighting while Scarface 1983 followed typical lighting conventions. The use of
symbolism in Scarface 1932 was an added layer of complexity to the film that Scarface 1983 did not
have. One thing both films did face quite extensively was censorship. Each film had to be heavily

The original Scarface film was directed by Howard Hawks in 1932. The 1930's was a period of
imbalance and hardship, which was known as the Great Depression and Prohibition. Although the
most recognizable 1983 remake, directed by Brian De Palma, positioned Cuban immigrant Tony
Montana, in Miami during a time where drug cartels took over the streets. All views of the remake
made a big influence in the industry, which over time, made it a classic film equal to the 1932
original. Even though both directors stuck with the same storyline, both films bonded to the cultural
periods of time in which they were produced.
In Hawk's film, the Prohibition Era showcased that buying, selling or consuming alcohol was "no
no." Male characters started selling a buying beer under the table to make a profit, which shed light
on law enforcement to fight for and turn a blind eye to illegal sales and consumption. When Tony
compromises Johnny's new throne by blackmailing companies that were already purchasing from

In this essay I decided to watch the movie Scarface (1932). This movie is directed by Howard
Hawks and Richard Rosson. Its lead actors are Osgood Perkins, Paul Muni, Ann Dvorak, and Karen
Morley. Scarface is a film about guns, gangsters, and pretty woman, it follows a story of a fast rising

decided to analyze my favorite gangster movie of all time. The movie that I analyzed is called

Second, I want to cover the cause and effects registered in this movie. A very reoccurring cause and
effect in this movie is whenever Scarface gets angry or mad he snorts more and more cocaine. I

these images and sounds are being interpreted affect the response to racial vilification,
representation, along with gender roles and stereotypes. Conventional practice in the entertainment
