Canadian Pacific Railway History
The Railways are very important part of Canada's history and a part of transportation. "For more
than a century, CP rail was called the Canadian Pacific Railway, and it remains today the railroad
that helped to settle the Canadian West in the Second half of the last Century" ( Thomas York 129).
The CP was not only built to provide transportation, but it was also built to get British Columbia
united with Canada. It also helped many Chinese immigrants to come to Canada and had a strong
impact on the political and economic connection between west to east of Canada. It is beyond doubt
that the Canadian Pacific Railway was really the one that had Canada united as a country.
Chinese workers had an important contribution to the building of the Canadian ... Show more

Five thousand labourers were sent from China by ship during these contracts and over seven
thousand were employed from California. Between 1881 and 1884 there were 17000 Chinese
labourers working on Canadian Pacific Railway. Chinese workers got paid "$1.00 a day, and from
this $1.00 the workers had to still pay for their food and their camping and cooking gear, [while]
white workers did not have to pay for these things even though they were paid more money $1.50–
$2.50 per day"(Library and Archives Canada). The Chinese workers had the most dangerous jobs
from others, as they had to break off granite and planted explosives that were used to blow up
tunnels. While working on the railway, many died due to accidents, fires and dynamite blasts. The
Chinese workers lived in tents, but these tents were unsafe as they did not provide protection from
falling rocks. When the Canadian Pacific Railway completed in 1885, the Chinese workers needed
to find new jobs. Several workers went back to China, while some found a new job as gardeners,
cooks and servants. The Chinese moved to east of Canada and settled there, opening restaurants and
laundries. When the railway finished, the government passed The Chinese Immigration Act of 1885

Cost Function in Railways
Introduction
This assignment focuses on the cost functions of the Dutch Railways. In this tutorial will be an
estimated cost function developed for the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). This cost function
(expressed in Dutch Guilders) is based on the period of Year 1951 till Year 1993. This due to certain
developments that made it more difficult to come to a good approach of a cost function. Based on
the cost function, developed in this tutorial, there will be an answer provided on the question
whether is it efficient to allow competition on the tracks.
First we will define a cost function related to the NS. Then we will describe the important variables.
After defining the cost function, the relevance of the cost function will be explained. ... Show more

The type of production function is as follows Y=f(X), where Y is the maximum produced outputs
and X is the given inputs. For every unit of input there is a price g related to it.
As said earlier if the company has a cost minimizing strategy then the earlier type can be written as
follows:
Min∑▒〖Xg〗^
The results of the above type gives as the cost function for every level of Y given the input prices g.
So the type for the cost function is C= h(Y,g).
In the case where the firm does not follow a cost minimizing strategy it is preferable for the
company to calculate a cost – output relation. In other words it is better to sum the costs and relate
them to the input so that it can easily predict the effect of changes in output levels on total cost. The
reason for not taking into account all the variables is that in the case of a public firm if we calculate
many unnecessary variables then we will have a higher variance of the estimated parameters of the
necessary variables. In this case our results will be biased as if the goal of the company is to
minimize cost and we were missing data e.g. the input prices.
The most important step in producing the cost function is the estimation of its parameters. The most
common form that is used for the calculation of production function is the Cobb– Douglas form.
Cobb Douglas is a linear function and has many restrictions as the assumption that all elasticities of

Disadvantages And Impacts Of The Railways In India
EARLY IMPRESSIONS:
Undeterred by oddities and abhorrence generated from within and outside, the railways has steamed
ahead ceremoniously since its inception in 1853. It has completed a glorious 162 years, enjoyed the
best and worst times during its long history starting with the British Colonoial Raj to the present.
Through history, the railways have been deemed a 'calamity' and a 'boon'. Romesh Chandra Dutta,
critic of the British Raj in Indian, described the railways as 'wasteful expenditure' and a 'hazardous
and dangerous venture'. Karl Marx wrote: "I known that the English sultocracy intends to endow
India with the railways with the exclusive view of extracting at diminished expense the cotton and
other raw materials for their manufacturers." However, the railways were also regarded as a
preventive measure against famines and the only affordable means of transport available for the
masses. Lord Dalhousie fully supported the railway project and suggested that any loss incurred
would be cheerfully borne by the British government. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One might disagree about the extent of its initial contribution to the developing economy, but
nobody can deny the fact that the railways assumed the status of a lifeline for the national economy
much before the dawn of Independence in India. The railways probably went out of fashion for a
decade or two in the second–half of the 20th century in Europe because of its over–burdened
programmes and expenditure and tough competition. But within India, the railways are regarded as
the cheapest and most convenient mode of transport and is used by citizens through the length and
breadth of the

CBN Railway Essay
CBN Railway Company
Among some of the challenges that CBN Railway Company faces, this paper will focus on a
solution to overcome the inefficiency that exists with the maintenance of their equipment; namely
their locomotives. CBN Railway Company is also considering leasing locomotives from various
sources, unspecified. We will analyze some possible solutions and weigh the pros and cons of the
possibility of leasing equipment. These two challenges facing this company are causing the quality
of customer service to frail amidst an increase in business in the rail industry.
Power by the Mile Leasing Arrangements
Leasing of equipment for some companies can be advantageous. Depending on the lease terms,
some firms can have great success with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that CBN has schedules to maintain and customers to satisfy through adherence to these
schedules tells the tale that CBN is in dire need of a good maintenance system. Through
implementation of such a system, they may also need to revisit the quality of expertise and
leadership within its labor force. Although they may go into a leasing agreement, a provision of the
lease forces them to still hold on to a labor force for maintenance of their locomotives. Whether or
not they choose to lease, this labor force must be elite in order to efficiently and effectively provide
adequate service to their equipment. The possibility of hiring on a Maintenance Manager to oversee
and run the maintenance department may be a viable possibility. Either way, the main deficiency of
CBN seems to be the lack of expertise or direction of personnel that maintain their equipment,
therefore, investing in maintenance leadership and expertise is a must for this company.
Best Interest for CBN
The main focus of any company is to be profitable. Profitability depends greatly on customer
satisfaction and efficient/effective systems within the company. Although being in the situation that
CBN is in, they must focus on what needs to be done in order to reverse the poor job servicing of its
customers. This needs to be a "low lying fruit", so to speak,

Importance Of Railway Transport
Rail This mode of transport is reliable and fast and one of the most important ways by which people
and goods are transported. (Train History , 2017) Rail transportation is referred to as 'movement of
on guideways' and rails are the most common guideways. However technological progress made
monorails and magnetic levitation trains now available and although railways are a result of the
industrial revolution, they have been affected by continuous innovations, technical, regulatory and
commercial changes which have enhanced their capacity and efficiency. Therefore railway transport
is important now as it was in the late 19th century. One innovation pertains to the quality of the rail
infrastructure, particularly rail tracks (e.g. better steel, concrete ties), which regulates the operational
characteristics of their use such as speed, permitted weight, maintenance and immunity towards the
environment.
Increasing electrification and automation also improve the efficiency of rail transportation,
passenger and freight alike. For safety purposes commodities ought to be stowed on the trains in a
certain manner for guaranteed railway delivery. (Slack, 1998) Based on the implementation by
Transport Canada to strengthen the railway and transportation of dangerous goods safety systems.
The emergency directive requires all rail operators to;
Ensure that no locomotive attached to one or more loaded tank cars transporting dangerous goods is
left unattended on a main track;

2 EMBEDDED SYSTEMS:
2.1 DEFINITIONS: Embedded system is a combination of hardware and software, it is also named
as "Firm ware". An embedded system is a special purpose computer system, which is completely
encapsulated by the device it controls. It is a computer–controlled system. An embedded system is a
specialized system that is a part of a larger system or machine. As a part of a larger system it largely
determines its functionality. Embedded systems are electronic devices that incorporate
microprocessors with in their implementations. The main purpose of the microprocessors are
simplify the system design and improve flexibility. In the embedded systems, the software is often
stored in a read only memory (RAM) chip. Embedded systems provide several major functions
including monitoring of the analog environment by reading data from sensors and controlling
actuators.
2.2 EXAMPLES OF EMBEDDED SYSTEMS: Embedded systems are found in wide range of
application areas. Originally they were used only for expensive industrial control applications, but
as technology brought down the cost of dedicated processors, they began to appear in moderately
expensive applications such as automobiles, communication and office equipments and television

There are several advantages and very few disadvantages to power

mile arrangements; the
largest advantage being improved service to customers. The improved financial status of the railroad
has allowed the rail industry to provide a more tailored service to its customers. It has also allowed
for better equipment and more ease when negotiating contract rates for volume movements.
Also, with this arrangement, CBN would likely be using more up to date equipment. Since the

If they miss on availability or reliability, it pays a penalty. If they exceed on those measures, it
receives rewards.
The same should apply in regards to employee productivity ratio where it was presupposed that
CBN would provided supervision, not the companies providing the equipment, as it would help
increase productivity. If CBN doesn't achieve the target ratio, it must pay a penalty for the
productivity gap.
As cost reduction is the important benefit sought from an agreement of this nature, CBN and the
companies its leasing from should agree to work towards reductions in total cost through continuous
improvement processes and technological improvements.
The agreement would allow both parties to share benefits according to a predetermined formula.
It would also provide for shared labour and material cost escalation.
Both teams would be responsible for finding alternatives to improve the program. For example, by
improving shop operations or methods of scheduling locomotives for maintenance. The teams
would also determine the best methods for continuous improvements of benefit sharing which may
be in the form of parts credits, rebates, rate adjustments or other methods.
3. Do you think that the decision to lease the locomotives was the best decision for
CBN? Explain your answer.

The Tokyo Railway Station Building
The Tokyo railway station building is located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan in the Marunouchi business
district. The station which acts as Tokyo's main intercity terminal is served by the Tokyo Metro
network, Japan Railways' regional commuter lines as well as the Shinkansen high speed railway
lines. The Tokyo Station also has a reputation of being the busiest station in the country, judging by
the number of trains it serves per day; approximately three thousand trains in one day. Furthermore,
the train station has a hotel and gallery within its premises. In terms of architecture and historical
culture, the station actually has a long history that dates back more than a hundred years, thereby
making it one of the one of the few major examples of buildings designed in classical style
remaining in Tokyo, and Japan as a whole.
Chronicle information of the building Even though the Tokyo Station was constructed in 1914, its
actual plan is connected to the history of Japan's rail in the 1880s (Ito n.p). It is therefore viewed by
the Japanese as being significant in the advancement of rail technology and as a symbolic structure
within Japan. By 1885, several railway tracks were already passing through Tokyo, thereby
necessitating the need for a central terminal to be built in the region between Ueno and Shinbashi.
The station which was to accommodate Tokyo's entire network was simply referred to as the
"central terminal" (Ito n.p). The project for the Tokyo Station was first offered

The Canadian Pacific Railway ( Cpr )
The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), officially founded in 1881, marked a significant milestone in
Canadian history. At the time it was legitimately formed, no one could have ever imagined the
evolution and progression that it has made to present day. Over the past 150 years, the CPR has
underwent and endured its fair share of sacrifices. However, there are countless reasons why the
CPR should be viewed, remembered, and revered as a successful project. Throughout this essay,
numerous topics, from the origins of the railway's formation to its relevance and continued influence
during present day, will be illustrated and examined in great detail, as well as why the project itself
was an overall success. First and foremost, the idea of having a railway built throughout Canada was
already in existence long before 1881. However, it was not until Confederation was passed on July
1, 1867 when "[The railway's] realization was found to be a political necessity" (Leary, 5). In other
words, Confederation did not just mark the date in history where the federal Dominion of Canada
was born, but, it had also opened the doors necessary to make the project a reality. Clearly, there was
much more to Confederation than met the eye, and "as part of the deal, Nova Scotia and New
Brunswick were promised a railway to link them with the two Central Canadian provinces – Quebec
and Ontario" (Canadian Pacific). By 1871, Manitoba and British Columbia had also joined the
Confederation. At this point,

The United States ' Railway System
The United States' railway system is almost as old as the nation itself. If it was not for the railway
system, our country may not have become one of the most lucrative superpowers it is today. Colonel
John Stevens is credited for first presenting the idea of building a railway in 1812. Mr. Stevens
probably did not expect the railway system to become the massive technological innovation it once
became. The railway systems in the United States originally consisted of carriages and wagons
being pulled down a track by a horse or two. This form of train was most commonly used for
transporting freight.
Luckily, Colonel Stevens received the first ever railway grant in 1815 to construct the New Jersey
Railroad Company. By 1826, Stevens tested the first steam–engine train in the United States, known
as the "Steam Wagon." The "Steam Wagon" relied on the power of steam to move. Coal was
shoveled into something called a "firebox." The heat created from the burning coals was used to
convert water into steam. Smoke was released through the chimney while the heat boiled the water,
which created steam. The steam was then relocated to the cylinders through the steam pipes, where
they created the power to move the wheels of the train. It did take some time to build up enough
steam to start move the train. However when enough steam was built up, the conductors of the train
would blow the whistle to signal being ready to leave the station.
In 1827, the Baltimore and Ohio railway was

The Canadian Pacific Railway
In My Essay, I will talk about the views of Federal Politicians, businessmen, settlers, Chinese
labourers and First Nations People on the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Politicians
weren't the only factors that created Canada today. Could you believe that a large hunk of metal and
wood, spanning around Canada, was one of the most important factors that led to our Canada? This
large hunk of metal and wood is the Canadian Pacific Railway, commonly referred to as the CPR.
Many different people had different views on the CPR, and these views were crucial to the CPR's
development. Today, I'm going to talk about the views of important Federal Politicians,
businessmen, Chinese labourers and even First Nations people on the building and development of
the CPR. These views were detrimental in developing the CPR and thus, developing the face of
Canada today. Before we get started, I'd like to explain the CPR a bit more in depth, in case there are
people who don't know much about it in general. The CPR is a railway built under the premise of
connecting Eastern Canada to British Columbia (or BC for short), when BC entered Confederation
in 1871. A form of connection between the two areas was required from BC, and Eastern Canada,
with John A. Macdonald as their Prime Minister at the time, suggested making a railway, whose
completion must have been made within 10 years, starting in 1881. Chinese labourers were imported
to Canada to make the railway, but I'll

The doctrine of Ultra vires was first mentioned in 1875 in the landmark judgement of Ashbury

Facts
A Company called "The Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Company," was incorporated under the
Companies Act, 1862. Its object was "maintenance, making – selling or lending on hire, railway

Acting beyond its scope, the company extended a loan and entered into a contract for building of

Banks and other companies might be reluctant to deal with a company with their contracting partner

Ultra vires is an act or transaction of a company, which may not be illegal, but is beyond the
company's powers by reason of not being within the scope of MOA. Any attempted departure will
be invalid and cannot be validated even if assented by all the members of the company.
This rule acts as a preserver of the corporate capital in the hands of the corporation . There are three
extremely germane and basic purposes behind the protection of corporate capital by method for
doctrine of ultra vires.
Firstly, the company's share–holders, agree to part with their money permanently on the faith that it

Secondly, the creditors give credit to the company on the faith of implied representation that the

The Management Of The East Central Railway
INTRODUCTION Samastipur is an administrative center for the East Central Railway. Mechanical
workshop, Samastipur was established in 1881 for overhauling of Steam locomotives, POH of
coaches and wagons. It originally belonged to Bengal & North Western Railway (BNWR) and
subsequently merged in state owned Oudh Tirhut Railway (OTR) on 1st April 1943. Later on, after
formation of zones, it became a workshop of North Eastern Railway. Subsequent to restructuring of
zonal Railways, it has come under East Central Railway. At present, this workshop manufactures
BOXNHL wagons. The workshop is also ISO 9001:2008 certified. TOI reported that the Samastipur
workshop of the East Central Railway has achieved a rare feat by manufacturing stainless steel
wagons having the axle load capacity of about 22.29 tonnes. This workshop is the second unit of the
Indian Railways where stainless steel wagons have been successfully manufactured. According to an
ECR press release, the special feature of this kind of wagons is that it has less weight compared to
old conventional wagons but it has the capacity to load about 71 tonnes freight while the old wagon

The Grand Canyon Railway
CASE 17 THE GRAND CANYON RAILWAY One interesting feature of the southwestern United
States is the area known as the "Four Comers." the only place in the United States where four slates
meet at one point. Within the 130,000 square miles of the Colorado Plateau in this region lie many
wonders of nature. The plateau contains eight national parks, twenty national monuments, as well as
numerous other nationally designated areas and huge tracts of national forests. This wealth of
natural features and the cultures of the various Native American tribes in the region have made the
area an important destination for tourists, especially those interested in natural history and culture.

Freight service from the Santa Fe was abandoned in 1974, with no work performed on the track
between Williams and the Grand Canyon until 1989. The work to get the GCRy running was
monumental, because all engines and passenger cars had to be acquired and completely rebuilt. In
addition, the depot at Williams and the adjoining Fray Marcos Hotel were in need of substantial
refurbishing. In the depot, operating offices, ticket offices, a waiting room, and souvenir shop are
found. All of this work was accomplished in a span of seven months to be ready for the September
1989 opening. Today, the GCRy provides an interesting and nostalgic way for visitors to travel to
the canyon. During the summer months, daily round–trip rail service is provided by steam
locomotive, and in the winter diesel locomotives are used due to the severity of weather conditions.
For all service, passengers travel in railcars that date from 1923 and are reconditioned to
approximate that time period. Departure from Williams is at 9:30 A.M. and arrival at Grand Canyon
NP is at 11:45 A.M., in the center of the park's historic district at the 1910 Grand Canyon Depot. The
train departs from the Grand Canyon at 3:15 P.M. and arrives back in Williams at 5:30 P.M. No
smoking is allowed on the train in "any of the railcars. Reservations can be made by calling a toll–

JR Rail Pass
The Japan Railway (JR) is the main railway company that owns and operates the once government
owned. They offer a rail pass called the JR Rail Pass, for tourists visiting Japan. Users can use
almost all JR line's trains for an unlimited amount of times. JR also owns and operates around 70%
of Japan's railway network. The pass are divided in six different passes. First the passes are grouped
in three different travel lengths, they are 7, 14 & 21 days. These then are all divided up into two
classes, Green (which is first class) and the regular–class passes.

In 2015, three of the groups, East, West and Central saw increases to their profits.
"Sales at East Japan Railway Co. grew 4 percent from the year before to ¥2.8 trillion, with operating

Railway Co. Operating profit expanded 14.2 percent to ¥578 billion. West Japan Railway Co. saw
its sales rise 7.5 percent to ¥1.4 trillion and its operating profit surge 29.9 percent to ¥181 billion."
(Jiji, 2016).
And these can go towards the future building of more subway lines and rails for easier, faster,
enhanced trains. Making the stations and in general Japan more appealing to visit. The amount of
money that is made from these passes boost the tourism industry with more and more people visiting
and buying these tickets.
Closing
With more and more people visiting Japan, and more and more people using the rail passes, more
and more stations will be maintained and upgraded. This means that not only will tourists be able to
use these great forms of transportation, the citizens of the communities will get better trains and
better stations because of all the people coming. Because of the industry needing these upgrades and
upkeep, the everyday transit user will get better facilities for them to use. Newer and better and

The Immigration Of Canada During The Canadian Pacific Railway
The word immigration means an "action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country" . The
people of China started their immigration to Canada before Canada joined confederation; various
factors forced the people to leave their country such as wars, floods, and tsunami while many people
were attracted because of "shortage of workers" in new Canadian industries and even "new
settlement" attracted them . After Canada was officially announced as a country, Canadian Pacific
Railway and the gold rush in British Columbia were the main factors that motivated Chinese and
other Asian people to immigrate to Canada . During the "Fraser River" gold rush and Canadian
Pacific Railway many workers were required for constructing roads, cutting down trees, mountains
and clearing the area, making the railway lines; Chinese workers agreed to work at low wages and
consequently were hired . The Chinese are Canada 's "oldest" community of Asian immigrants and
they played a historical role in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which was a key to
Confederation . Despite of Chinese workers contributions to building and completing the Canadian
Pacific Railway, they faced racial discrimination, especially in the form of the Chinese Head Tax,
which was enforced to prevent and discourage Chinese immigration to Canada, and it was a
complete racism. The Chinese immigrants played a significant role in the construction of completion

The Locomotive Of The Transcontinental Railway
With the completion of the Transcontinental railway in 1869, it connected the Union Pacific and
Central Pacific railways in Promontory, Utah. This connection made travel from east to west much
easier than the horse and stagecoach or covered wagon of days past. With the connection of rail,
came luxury and convenience of travel, as well as the movement of goods out west. Steam engines
were a major part of the Industrial Revolution, and steam locomotives made travel from place to
place so incredibly easy compared to the traditional horse and buggy, but as with everything else,
technology advanced and the steel skinned, steam breathing dinosaurs that carved the way for many
across the country, has met the end of the line with the advent of the diesel engine and electric
streetcars essecently being combined to make diesel–electric locomotives most famously made by
General Motors' Electro–Motive Division.
The steam engine revolutionized the way mechanical work was done. Its invention came in the early
1700s in Spain; it worked but was not very efficient, as many firsts are. In 1781, James Watt
patented a steam engine that became a key part of the Industrial Revolution; one that worked in a
continuous rotative motion that produced torque to do mechanical work. The Industrial Revolution
started in 1760 and lasted through the 1840s, during the industrialization of the United States. Once
the Watt steam engine had proved itself, it was time for it to be used in other means than just

Essay On Railways In Canada
A major part of Canadian history is about railways, they seemed to transform Canadian societies
into something bigger and better. Before railways Canada had been faced with a problem in the
winter which was the lack of transportation, railways seemed to transform Canada by providing
jobs, illuminating violence, and creating international connections.
The creation of the railways in Canada was naturally a big job because of this fact many jobs were
created for various Canadians. People were always needed to create the path and do the hard labour
that was involved, however, this did not pay well for the very physical work that was involved.
Much more people were now being employed to construct the railways and drive the newly built
trains around that had carried many goods.
The railroad system had also decreased the amount of domestic violence that was being taken place
in Canadian society. Before the railroad construction in Canada, many people who grew crops as
farmers especially in bulk forms had a very difficult time getting their products to market especially
in the winter. For an example, grain, if a farmer was not able to get their goods to the market to sell
they would usually turn the grain into whiskey. This naturally led to an over the assumption of the
drink making the farmer overly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It became possible to think that an individual could get from their starting point to their endpoint
without freezing to death because of the harsh temperatures of the winter. Although at first many
were worried about how the extreme cold in Canada would affect the trains because of the steam as
well as the hills and how the snow would affect the railways, they soon figured out ways to work
with the climate and make the railways

The Canadian Pacific Railway
The Railway that Benefitted All
The Canadian Pacific Railway and its benefits to farmers, financiers, and consumers.

Mr. Moore
CHC2Da
The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) is commonly argued to be the most important transportation
route in Canadian history, but most do not know the substantial benefits it provided. More
specifically, it provided benefits to farmers, financiers, and consumers. The financiers of the railway
were the group of people that the railway benefitted the most, mainly because of the significant
amount of use it received in the 19th century. During the 1800s and early 1900s the farmers of
Canada benefitted greatly from the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway because of the ease

Overall, the financiers of the railway had benefitted tremendously from the amount of money being
brought in by the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The construction of the CPR also
provided many benefits for consumers in Canada at the time of being built, as well as after for many
years to come. Receiving goods was made much easier through the use of the CPR to deliver
products to the eastern part of Canada. This was mostly just a convenience for consumers rather than
really benefitting them financially. As a result of easier transportation to the eastern Canada, the
price of food and goods was far less coming from the west because of the low shipment costs issued
by the CPR, which was a financial benefit for the consumers of Canada. The standard of living in
turn was increased by the lower costs of items needed for the standard every–day life of citizens
living in Canada. This was mostly apparent in the lower to middle class division in that time, where
obvious gains were apparent, so the new immigrants and poor began to lift out of poverty at a
substantial rate. Another benefit that consumers had was that they were not required to pay tariffs on
the CPR; only the clients of the railway were required to pay fares to the financiers, which was
another convenience for consumers. To put it simply, Canada's consumers weren't drastically
affected by the construction of the

Railway Labor Act Essay
Railway Labor Act and Impact on Modern Day Airlines For decades, the railroad industry was in a
period of great economic political, and industrial changes in the United States. The industrial boom
was taking its toll on the United States, and the widespread violent work stoppages were detrimental
to the railroad industry due to tensions escalating between unions and workers. President Calvin
Coolidge was strongly vocal about the issue and urged railroads and unions to recommend
legislation to improve relations and ultimately reduce the threat of any railroad shutdowns. As a
response, railroads and unions immediately drafted legislation, which in hopes would improve labor
and union relations. On May 20, 1029, President Coolidge signed and designated the new law as the
Railway Labor Act of 1926. Coined one of the most significant and longest lasting pieces of
legislation, the Railway Labor Act provides a mechanism through which labor disputes between
railroads and currently airlines, could be handled in a peaceful, non–disruptive manner. The Railway
Labor Act of 1926 is unique unlike other legislations because it ensures no interruption to
commerce, provides an unhindered right of employees to join a labor union, guarantees
independence of an organization to enact the RLA, assists in work rules and working conditions, and
assists in a prompt and orderly settlement of disputes. The Railway Labor Act is certainly different
due to the relationship of labor and management in the

They had made an excellent fire, and had set the kettle on it at about half–past five. So that by eight

So to the railway they went, and as soon as they started for the railway they saw where the garden
had hidden itself. It was right behind the stables, and it had a high wall all round.
"Oh, never mind about the garden now!" cried Peter. "Mother told me this morning where it was.
It'll keep till tomorrow. Let's get to the railway."
The way to the railway was all down hill over smooth, short turf with here and there furze bushes
and grey and yellow rocks sticking out like candied peel from the top of a cake.
The way ended in a steep run and a wooden fence – and there was the railway with the shining
metals and the telegraph wires and posts and signals.
They all climbed on to the top of the fence, and then suddenly there was a rumbling sound that made
them look along the line to the right, where the dark mouth of a tunnel opened itself in the face of a
rocky cliff; next moment a train had rushed out of the tunnel with a shriek and a snort, and had slid
noisily past them. They felt the rush of its passing, and the pebbles on the line jumped and rattled
under it as it went by.
"Oh!" said Roberta, drawing a long breath; "it was like a great dragon tearing by. Did you feel it fan
us with its hot wings?"

Executive Summary Canadian National Railway is a company that is a part of the transportation rail
industry. It transports a variety of goods around Canada and the United States. After thoroughly
analyzing the annual report for 2015, it is evident that CN is doing well and has been for the past
years. This report includes the historic success of CN, comparison to industry and competing
company and the analysis of the financial statements. These information help understand how its
revenues, profit and overall success is increasing year by year.
Historic Success of CN Railway The Canadian National Railways is a part of the Railway Industry

Essay on Cultural Impact of the Railway of Victorian England
Introduction
At the beginning of the industrial revolution in England during the mid–nineteenth century, the
railroad was the most innovative mode of transportation known. The British Rail system was a
forerunner in railroad technology, uses, and underground engineering. Though the rail system was
extremely slow at first and prohibitively expensive to build and run, the British were not to be
dissuaded in their pursuit of non–animal driven transportation. The most advanced mode of
transportation prior to the introduction of the rail system was the horse drawn omnibus on a track,
called a tram. This paper will examine the rail system from a cultural perspective, presenting the
impact the railway had on everyday lives in Victorian London ... Show more content on

Some samples of letters, also taken from Jack Simmons' book, exemplify the drama of riding the
railroad:
You skim along like magic. We drove to the railway office at Warrington a short mile from the town
where we took our seats in a machine; for it was one continued machine although having the
appearance of 3 regular coaches and three divisions of seats like those in a coffee–room– the
coaches not open at the top – the seats were. (Simmons 21)
Another writer(1) quoted in Simmons wrote, "On my return to Chester I visited Liverpool [in 1836]
and traveled from thence, for curiosity, a few miles towards Manchester on that then novel mode of
conveyance, a railroad." (Simmons 23) As fascinated as the public was with the railroad, it was also
exasperated by the poor service, (train arrival times were never announced and there were accidents
quite often), and the cost of riding. The train departure times were announced, but the arrival times
were never specified. To travel the length of 31 miles, the trip would take 1 3/4 hours. This rate of
travel was not a vast improvement from the 3 1/2 mile per hour train trip of the first railway. Also,
trains did not run between 9:00 am and 1:00 PM on Sundays out of respect for religious services.

numerous Parliamentary acts passed to regulate the new booming industry. To get a clear picture of

The Importance Of The Railway In Canada
Canada is a great country but it wouldn't be the same without the Trans Canada Railway. The great
achievement of this railway helped form and unite this great country in many ways. These are some
of the reasons why I think the CPR helped in forming a strong, united Canada.
Confederation on July 1, 1867, brought together the Eastern Colonies of Canada, but as a country,
Canada was interested also in making a connection with the West Coast Colonies. One of the ways
this was accomplished was by promising to build a railway from coast to coast. The province of
Manitoba was convinced to join confederation by 1870, and British Columbia joined in 1871, but
only when the Canadian government promised to build the railway within ten years. Unfortunately,
that government was unable to follow through with it's promise and true construction only began in
1881 and finally completed in 1885. The first train ran in 1886 from Montreal to Port Moody. The
CPR was an important way to connect the large country of Canada.
The communities on the West Coast naturally felt like they had more in common with other
communities on the coast, such as Oregon and California and may have eventually chosen to ...

The railway also allowed for further development of different areas of Canada that otherwise would
have seemed too remote in order to create settlements. As a company, the CPR was involved in land
settlement and land sales early on in our country's history. They also installed telegraph lines along
the railway lines, which allowed quicker cross country communication. The company also ended up
finding natural gas in Alberta when they were digging a well to find water for their steam engines.
In this way, the CPR ended up being more than a railway company but got involved in transporting
goods in different ways such as steamships and

Case Study Analysis : Indian Railways
Case Study Analysis: Indian Railways
The case study on Indian Railways (IR) procurement practices by Nag (2013) is one of the most
comprehensive case studies ever illustrated based on IR techniques. Furthermore, the case study
clearly represented various aspects of the IR procurement management with clearly distinguishing
sections depicting the humongous IR network of railways; methodologies used in procurement
practices for vendor selection; controlling and regulation practices related to procurement;
competition between the suppliers; and ethics and accountability factors of IR individuals.
Subsequently, each of these procurement management elements of IR would be summarized with
various information and examples within this critical thinking report.
Summary of the Case
IR is one of the largest railroad network, and passenger and freight transport organization in the
world. With 1.4 million employees, 7030 railway stations, 103 locomotive shelters, 224 locomotive
shops, and 45 maintenance and repair workshops; IR is the largest real estate owner and contributes
1.2% of the India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (Nag, 2013, p. 1). Therefore, to regulate this
huge network of railway systems and billions of Rupees spent every year on procurement of items
related to daily operations, maintenance and repairs, IR needs phenomenal, methodical and
competent procurement management practices.

Essay about The Death Railway of World War II
Abstract
The saying of, "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it" is one that deserves more focus.
One might ask, "Why?" The answer is the fact that countless events in history have been overlooked
and forgotten. Such is the case of the Thai– Burma Railway also known as the "Death Railway", a
line between Bang Pong and Thanbyuzayat. This, in and of itself is a tragedy. The inhuman
conditions of thousands of POW's as they labored in the Thai–Burma jungle during World War II is
something that should never be forgotten. Those who survived and those who did not deserve
commendation for their strength, and reverence as heroes. Thus, why does no one know their story,
their suffering, and their past? This past, this history, needs to ... Show more content on

What was to be done with them? In the eyes of the Japanese, they were a disgrace to mankind. A
Japanese man would rather die than be humiliated with the charge of giving up. They were taught to
never surrender and fight until death for their Emperor (Lee, 1998).
This concept baffled the Japanese. The idea of prisoners had not occurred to them. These men were
dishonorable, and the thought of feeding and taking care of the dishonorable repulsed the Japanese
(Pitt & Mason, 1993). For a while, the issue was not dealt with, and the POW's were left alone.
Unfortunately, that was not to be their permanent state of being. Soon, an "inspiration" gave light to
the issue. The Japanese discovered they held in their hands a free work force. In these dishonorable
men, lay the path to accomplishing the new goals being set for a nation at war (La Forte & Marcello,
1993).
The Death Railway was one of these "new goals". Its intent was to join two pre–existing railroads;
one, running from Singapore to Ban Pong and Bangkok, the other from Ye on the Andaman coast to
Rangoon. The plan was to unite these two railroads by building a line from Ban Pong to
Thanbyuzayat, a small village 50 miles north of Ye (La Forte & Marcello, 1993).
The Railway had three major purposes and desirable attributes for Japan. First, the Railway was to
provide supplies and reinforcements as Japan was fighting the British in northern Burma at the time.
The Japanese were also

How Did The Canadian Pacific Railway Affect Canada
Ever since the beginning of its construction in 1881, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has had a
profound impact on Canada's political, cultural and geographical landscape. What began as an
aspect of John A Macdonald's plan to create a Canada which stretched from sea to sea has since
developed into over 200 000 km of railway tracks spanning both Canada and the United States.
("Canadian Pacific Railway," 2017) Just as predicted by Macdonald, the railway acted as a catalyst
for the unification and advancement of what would soon become modern Canada. The CPR greatly
contributed to the shaping of Canada's identity in several major ways; firstly by influencing the
growth and development of major cities, secondly by enabling the settlement of ... Show more

With the CPR, came a culture vastly different than that of the First Nations who had lived in the
prairies almost exclusively before its construction. Among the cultural disparities, one of the most
glaring was the European philosophy of land ownership which was in direct contradiction with the
First Nations' traditional way of life. The land they had previously lived and hunted on had been
fenced off and sold to European immigrants. While the introduction of new values was certainly
jarring for the First Nations peoples, the destruction of their natural resources was what had the most
impact on their culture. Before the construction of the railway, the First Nations relied heavily on the
plains buffalo as a resource. The First Nations used the buffalo for food, shelter, tools, and
ceremonial ornaments. As the CPR was constructed and the prairies were further developed, the
plains buffalo were pushed to extinction and as a result, the First Nations were pushed to near
starvation. In response to this issue, the Canadian government then decided they would provide food
for the First Nations, but only if they moved onto reservation land. (Berton, 2005) The First Nations
were essentially forced to choose between abandoning their land and

What caused Ranbir concern was the lack of consensus among the various stakeholder groups in the
Indian
Railways about the idea of 'tracking' the rolling stock
(freight railcars, passenger coaches, locomotives). The need to automate such tracking – especially
for freight railcars6 – had been felt for almost two decades. Initially, the available technology was
too expensive, and experimental in nature; however, lately, technologies had stabilized, and costs
had come down. Various options had become available to automate the tracking, ranging from the
use of RFID tags to the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS)–based technology. Other available
alternatives were the use of optical tracking systems using OCR, or the use of hand–held devices to
manually record wagon identification data.
Ranbir scrutinized the thick file of papers in front of him.
It described the pilot project for automatic wagon tracking, which had recently commenced. The
pilot project envisaged the use of RFID technology, already proven in North
American railroads and other Railways, to tag 500 coal hopper wagons (Figure 1). Three trackside
tag readers would be placed along one of the routes used for

Canadian Pacific Railway History

  • 1. Canadian Pacific Railway History The Railways are very important part of Canada's history and a part of transportation. "For more than a century, CP rail was called the Canadian Pacific Railway, and it remains today the railroad that helped to settle the Canadian West in the Second half of the last Century" ( Thomas York 129). The CP was not only built to provide transportation, but it was also built to get British Columbia united with Canada. It also helped many Chinese immigrants to come to Canada and had a strong impact on the political and economic connection between west to east of Canada. It is beyond doubt that the Canadian Pacific Railway was really the one that had Canada united as a country. Chinese workers had an important contribution to the building of the Canadian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Five thousand labourers were sent from China by ship during these contracts and over seven thousand were employed from California. Between 1881 and 1884 there were 17000 Chinese labourers working on Canadian Pacific Railway. Chinese workers got paid "$1.00 a day, and from this $1.00 the workers had to still pay for their food and their camping and cooking gear, [while] white workers did not have to pay for these things even though they were paid more money $1.50– $2.50 per day"(Library and Archives Canada). The Chinese workers had the most dangerous jobs from others, as they had to break off granite and planted explosives that were used to blow up tunnels. While working on the railway, many died due to accidents, fires and dynamite blasts. The Chinese workers lived in tents, but these tents were unsafe as they did not provide protection from falling rocks. When the Canadian Pacific Railway completed in 1885, the Chinese workers needed to find new jobs. Several workers went back to China, while some found a new job as gardeners, cooks and servants. The Chinese moved to east of Canada and settled there, opening restaurants and laundries. When the railway finished, the government passed The Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 charging a ... • 3. Cost Function in Railways Introduction This assignment focuses on the cost functions of the Dutch Railways. In this tutorial will be an estimated cost function developed for the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). This cost function (expressed in Dutch Guilders) is based on the period of Year 1951 till Year 1993. This due to certain developments that made it more difficult to come to a good approach of a cost function. Based on the cost function, developed in this tutorial, there will be an answer provided on the question whether is it efficient to allow competition on the tracks. First we will define a cost function related to the NS. Then we will describe the important variables. After defining the cost function, the relevance of the cost function will be explained. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The type of production function is as follows Y=f(X), where Y is the maximum produced outputs and X is the given inputs. For every unit of input there is a price g related to it. As said earlier if the company has a cost minimizing strategy then the earlier type can be written as follows: Min∑▒〖Xg〗^ The results of the above type gives as the cost function for every level of Y given the input prices g. So the type for the cost function is C= h(Y,g). In the case where the firm does not follow a cost minimizing strategy it is preferable for the company to calculate a cost – output relation. In other words it is better to sum the costs and relate them to the input so that it can easily predict the effect of changes in output levels on total cost. The reason for not taking into account all the variables is that in the case of a public firm if we calculate many unnecessary variables then we will have a higher variance of the estimated parameters of the necessary variables. In this case our results will be biased as if the goal of the company is to minimize cost and we were missing data e.g. the input prices. The most important step in producing the cost function is the estimation of its parameters. The most common form that is used for the calculation of production function is the Cobb– Douglas form. Cobb Douglas is a linear function and has many restrictions as the assumption that all elasticities of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Disadvantages And Impacts Of The Railways In India EARLY IMPRESSIONS: Undeterred by oddities and abhorrence generated from within and outside, the railways has steamed ahead ceremoniously since its inception in 1853. It has completed a glorious 162 years, enjoyed the best and worst times during its long history starting with the British Colonoial Raj to the present. Through history, the railways have been deemed a 'calamity' and a 'boon'. Romesh Chandra Dutta, critic of the British Raj in Indian, described the railways as 'wasteful expenditure' and a 'hazardous and dangerous venture'. Karl Marx wrote: "I known that the English sultocracy intends to endow India with the railways with the exclusive view of extracting at diminished expense the cotton and other raw materials for their manufacturers." However, the railways were also regarded as a preventive measure against famines and the only affordable means of transport available for the masses. Lord Dalhousie fully supported the railway project and suggested that any loss incurred would be cheerfully borne by the British government. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One might disagree about the extent of its initial contribution to the developing economy, but nobody can deny the fact that the railways assumed the status of a lifeline for the national economy much before the dawn of Independence in India. The railways probably went out of fashion for a decade or two in the second–half of the 20th century in Europe because of its over–burdened programmes and expenditure and tough competition. But within India, the railways are regarded as the cheapest and most convenient mode of transport and is used by citizens through the length and breadth of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

CBN Railway Company is also considering leasing locomotives from various sources, unspecified. We will analyze some possible solutions and weigh the pros and cons of the possibility of leasing equipment. These two challenges facing this company are causing the quality of customer service to frail amidst an increase in business in the rail industry. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that CBN has schedules to maintain and customers to satisfy through adherence to these schedules tells the tale that CBN is in dire need of a good maintenance system. Through implementation of such a system, they may also need to revisit the quality of expertise and leadership within its labor force. Although they may go into a leasing agreement, a provision of the lease forces them to still hold on to a labor force for maintenance of their locomotives. Whether or not they choose to lease, this labor force must be elite in order to efficiently and effectively provide adequate service to their equipment. The possibility of hiring on a Maintenance Manager to oversee and run the maintenance department may be a viable possibility. Either way, the main deficiency of CBN seems to be the lack of expertise or direction of personnel that maintain their equipment, therefore, investing in maintenance leadership and expertise is a must for this company. Best Interest for CBN The main focus of any company is to be profitable. Profitability depends greatly on customer satisfaction and efficient/effective systems within the company. Although being in the situation that CBN is in, they must focus on what needs to be done in order to reverse the poor job servicing of its customers. This needs to be a "low lying fruit", so to speak, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Importance Of Railway Transport Rail This mode of transport is reliable and fast and one of the most important ways by which people and goods are transported. (Train History , 2017) Rail transportation is referred to as 'movement of on guideways' and rails are the most common guideways. However technological progress made monorails and magnetic levitation trains now available and although railways are a result of the industrial revolution, they have been affected by continuous innovations, technical, regulatory and commercial changes which have enhanced their capacity and efficiency. Therefore railway transport is important now as it was in the late 19th century. One innovation pertains to the quality of the rail infrastructure, particularly rail tracks (e.g. better steel, concrete ties), which regulates the operational characteristics of their use such as speed, permitted weight, maintenance and immunity towards the environment. Increasing electrification and automation also improve the efficiency of rail transportation, passenger and freight alike. For safety purposes commodities ought to be stowed on the trains in a certain manner for guaranteed railway delivery. (Slack, 1998) Based on the implementation by Transport Canada to strengthen the railway and transportation of dangerous goods safety systems. The emergency directive requires all rail operators to; Ensure that no locomotive attached to one or more loaded tank cars transporting dangerous goods is left unattended on a main track; ... There are several advantages and very few disadvantages to power by the mile arrangements; the largest advantage being improved service to customers. The improved financial status of the railroad has allowed the rail industry to provide a more tailored service to its customers. As cost reduction is the important benefit sought from an agreement of this nature, CBN and the companies its leasing from should agree to work towards reductions in total cost through continuous improvement processes and technological improvements. The agreement would allow both parties to share benefits according to a predetermined formula. It would also provide for shared labour and material cost escalation. • 17. The Tokyo Railway Station Building The Tokyo railway station building is located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan in the Marunouchi business district. The station which acts as Tokyo's main intercity terminal is served by the Tokyo Metro network, Japan Railways' regional commuter lines as well as the Shinkansen high speed railway lines. The Tokyo Station also has a reputation of being the busiest station in the country, judging by the number of trains it serves per day; approximately three thousand trains in one day. Furthermore, the train station has a hotel and gallery within its premises. In terms of architecture and historical culture, the station actually has a long history that dates back more than a hundred years, thereby making it one of the one of the few major examples of buildings designed in classical style remaining in Tokyo, and Japan as a whole. Chronicle information of the building Even though the Tokyo Station was constructed in 1914, its actual plan is connected to the history of Japan's rail in the 1880s (Ito n.p). It is therefore viewed by the Japanese as being significant in the advancement of rail technology and as a symbolic structure within Japan. By 1885, several railway tracks were already passing through Tokyo, thereby necessitating the need for a central terminal to be built in the region between Ueno and Shinbashi. The station which was to accommodate Tokyo's entire network was simply referred to as the "central terminal" (Ito n.p). The project for the Tokyo Station was first offered ... • 24. The Canadian Pacific Railway ( Cpr ) The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), officially founded in 1881, marked a significant milestone in Canadian history. At the time it was legitimately formed, no one could have ever imagined the evolution and progression that it has made to present day. Over the past 150 years, the CPR has underwent and endured its fair share of sacrifices. However, there are countless reasons why the CPR should be viewed, remembered, and revered as a successful project. Throughout this essay, numerous topics, from the origins of the railway's formation to its relevance and continued influence during present day, will be illustrated and examined in great detail, as well as why the project itself was an overall success. First and foremost, the idea of having a railway built throughout Canada was already in existence long before 1881. However, it was not until Confederation was passed on July 1, 1867 when "[The railway's] realization was found to be a political necessity" (Leary, 5). In other words, Confederation did not just mark the date in history where the federal Dominion of Canada was born, but, it had also opened the doors necessary to make the project a reality. Clearly, there was much more to Confederation than met the eye, and "as part of the deal, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were promised a railway to link them with the two Central Canadian provinces – Quebec and Ontario" (Canadian Pacific). By 1871, Manitoba and British Columbia had also joined the Confederation. At this point, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. The United States ' Railway System The United States' railway system is almost as old as the nation itself. If it was not for the railway system, our country may not have become one of the most lucrative superpowers it is today. Colonel John Stevens is credited for first presenting the idea of building a railway in 1812. Mr. Stevens probably did not expect the railway system to become the massive technological innovation it once became. The railway systems in the United States originally consisted of carriages and wagons being pulled down a track by a horse or two. This form of train was most commonly used for transporting freight. Luckily, Colonel Stevens received the first ever railway grant in 1815 to construct the New Jersey Railroad Company. By 1826, Stevens tested the first steam–engine train in the United States, known as the "Steam Wagon." The "Steam Wagon" relied on the power of steam to move. Coal was shoveled into something called a "firebox." The heat created from the burning coals was used to convert water into steam. Smoke was released through the chimney while the heat boiled the water, which created steam. The steam was then relocated to the cylinders through the steam pipes, where they created the power to move the wheels of the train. It did take some time to build up enough steam to start move the train. However when enough steam was built up, the conductors of the train would blow the whistle to signal being ready to leave the station. In 1827, the Baltimore and Ohio railway was ... • 28. The Canadian Pacific Railway In My Essay, I will talk about the views of Federal Politicians, businessmen, settlers, Chinese labourers and First Nations People on the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Politicians weren't the only factors that created Canada today. Could you believe that a large hunk of metal and wood, spanning around Canada, was one of the most important factors that led to our Canada? This large hunk of metal and wood is the Canadian Pacific Railway, commonly referred to as the CPR. Many different people had different views on the CPR, and these views were crucial to the CPR's development. Today, I'm going to talk about the views of important Federal Politicians, businessmen, Chinese labourers and even First Nations people on the building and development of the CPR. These views were detrimental in developing the CPR and thus, developing the face of Canada today. Before we get started, I'd like to explain the CPR a bit more in depth, in case there are people who don't know much about it in general. The CPR is a railway built under the premise of connecting Eastern Canada to British Columbia (or BC for short), when BC entered Confederation in 1871. A form of connection between the two areas was required from BC, and Eastern Canada, with John A. Macdonald as their Prime Minister at the time, suggested making a railway, whose completion must have been made within 10 years, starting in 1881. Chinese labourers were imported to Canada to make the railway, but I'll ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Its object was "maintenance, making – selling or lending on hire, railway carriages." This rule acts as a preserver of the corporate capital in the hands of the corporation . There are three extremely germane and basic purposes behind the protection of corporate capital by method for doctrine of ultra vires. Firstly, the company's share–holders, agree to part with their money permanently on the faith that it shall be invested in the stated objects and in no others. Secondly, the creditors give credit to the company on the faith of implied representation that the capital shall be applied only for the purposes of business. In addition, the depot at Williams and the adjoining Fray Marcos Hotel were in need of substantial refurbishing. In the depot, operating offices, ticket offices, a waiting room, and souvenir shop are found. All of this work was accomplished in a span of seven months to be ready for the September 1989 opening. The people of China started their immigration to Canada before Canada joined confederation; various factors forced the people to leave their country such as wars, floods, and tsunami while many people were attracted because of "shortage of workers" in new Canadian industries and even "new settlement" attracted them . After Canada was officially announced as a country, Canadian Pacific Railway and the gold rush in British Columbia were the main factors that motivated Chinese and other Asian people to immigrate to Canada . During the "Fraser River" gold rush and Canadian Pacific Railway many workers were required for constructing roads, cutting down trees, mountains and clearing the area, making the railway lines; Chinese workers agreed to work at low wages and consequently were hired . The Chinese are Canada 's "oldest" community of Asian immigrants and they played a historical role in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which was a key to Confederation . Despite of Chinese workers contributions to building and completing the Canadian Pacific Railway, they faced racial discrimination, especially in the form of the Chinese Head Tax, which was enforced to prevent and discourage Chinese immigration to Canada, and it was a complete racism. • 47. The Locomotive Of The Transcontinental Railway With the completion of the Transcontinental railway in 1869, it connected the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railways in Promontory, Utah. This connection made travel from east to west much easier than the horse and stagecoach or covered wagon of days past. With the connection of rail, came luxury and convenience of travel, as well as the movement of goods out west. Steam engines were a major part of the Industrial Revolution, and steam locomotives made travel from place to place so incredibly easy compared to the traditional horse and buggy, but as with everything else, technology advanced and the steel skinned, steam breathing dinosaurs that carved the way for many across the country, has met the end of the line with the advent of the diesel engine and electric streetcars essecently being combined to make diesel–electric locomotives most famously made by General Motors' Electro–Motive Division. The steam engine revolutionized the way mechanical work was done. Its invention came in the early 1700s in Spain; it worked but was not very efficient, as many firsts are. In 1781, James Watt patented a steam engine that became a key part of the Industrial Revolution; one that worked in a continuous rotative motion that produced torque to do mechanical work. The Industrial Revolution started in 1760 and lasted through the 1840s, during the industrialization of the United States. • 51. Essay On Railways In Canada A major part of Canadian history is about railways, they seemed to transform Canadian societies into something bigger and better. Before railways Canada had been faced with a problem in the winter which was the lack of transportation, railways seemed to transform Canada by providing jobs, illuminating violence, and creating international connections. The creation of the railways in Canada was naturally a big job because of this fact many jobs were created for various Canadians. People were always needed to create the path and do the hard labour that was involved, however, this did not pay well for the very physical work that was involved. Much more people were now being employed to construct the railways and drive the newly built trains around that had carried many goods. The railroad system had also decreased the amount of domestic violence that was being taken place in Canadian society. Before the railroad construction in Canada, many people who grew crops as farmers especially in bulk forms had a very difficult time getting their products to market especially in the winter. For an example, grain, if a farmer was not able to get their goods to the market to sell they would usually turn the grain into whiskey. This naturally led to an over the assumption of the drink making the farmer overly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eric Best November 13th, 2012 Mr. Moore CHC2Da The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) is commonly argued to be the most important transportation route in Canadian history, but most do not know the substantial benefits it provided. More specifically, it provided benefits to farmers, financiers, and consumers. The financiers of the railway were the group of people that the railway benefitted the most, mainly because of the significant amount of use it received in the 19th century. During the 1800s and early 1900s the farmers of Canada benefitted greatly from the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway because of the ease ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overall, the financiers of the railway had benefitted tremendously from the amount of money being brought in by the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The construction of the CPR also provided many benefits for consumers in Canada at the time of being built, as well as after for many years to come. Receiving goods was made much easier through the use of the CPR to deliver products to the eastern part of Canada. This was mostly just a convenience for consumers rather than really benefitting them financially. As a result of easier transportation to the eastern Canada, the price of food and goods was far less coming from the west because of the low shipment costs issued by the CPR, which was a financial benefit for the consumers of Canada. The standard of living in turn was increased by the lower costs of items needed for the standard every–day life of citizens living in Canada. This was mostly apparent in the lower to middle class division in that time, where obvious gains were apparent, so the new immigrants and poor began to lift out of poverty at a substantial rate. Another benefit that consumers had was that they were not required to pay tariffs on the CPR; only the clients of the railway were required to pay fares to the financiers, which was another convenience for consumers. To put it simply, Canada's consumers weren't drastically affected by the construction of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Railway Labor Act Essay Railway Labor Act and Impact on Modern Day Airlines For decades, the railroad industry was in a period of great economic political, and industrial changes in the United States. The industrial boom was taking its toll on the United States, and the widespread violent work stoppages were detrimental to the railroad industry due to tensions escalating between unions and workers. President Calvin Coolidge was strongly vocal about the issue and urged railroads and unions to recommend legislation to improve relations and ultimately reduce the threat of any railroad shutdowns. As a response, railroads and unions immediately drafted legislation, which in hopes would improve labor and union relations. On May 20, 1029, President Coolidge signed and designated the new law as the Railway Labor Act of 1926. Coined one of the most significant and longest lasting pieces of legislation, the Railway Labor Act provides a mechanism through which labor disputes between railroads and currently airlines, could be handled in a peaceful, non–disruptive manner. The Railway Labor Act of 1926 is unique unlike other legislations because it ensures no interruption to commerce, provides an unhindered right of employees to join a labor union, guarantees independence of an organization to enact the RLA, assists in work rules and working conditions, and assists in a prompt and orderly settlement of disputes. "Oh, never mind about the garden now!" cried Peter. "Mother told me this morning where it was. It'll keep till tomorrow. Let's get to the railway." The way to the railway was all down hill over smooth, short turf with here and there furze bushes and grey and yellow rocks sticking out like candied peel from the top of a cake. The way ended in a steep run and a wooden fence – and there was the railway with the shining metals and the telegraph wires and posts and signals. They all climbed on to the top of the fence, and then suddenly there was a rumbling sound that made them look along the line to the right, where the dark mouth of a tunnel opened itself in the face of a rocky cliff; next moment a train had rushed out of the tunnel with a shriek and a snort, and had slid noisily past them. They felt the rush of its passing, and the pebbles on the line jumped and rattled under it as it went by.

  • 66. Essay on Cultural Impact of the Railway of Victorian England Introduction At the beginning of the industrial revolution in England during the mid–nineteenth century, the railroad was the most innovative mode of transportation known. The British Rail system was a forerunner in railroad technology, uses, and underground engineering. Though the rail system was extremely slow at first and prohibitively expensive to build and run, the British were not to be dissuaded in their pursuit of non–animal driven transportation. The most advanced mode of transportation prior to the introduction of the rail system was the horse drawn omnibus on a track, called a tram. Some samples of letters, also taken from Jack Simmons' book, exemplify the drama of riding the railroad: You skim along like magic. We drove to the railway office at Warrington a short mile from the town where we took our seats in a machine; for it was one continued machine although having the appearance of 3 regular coaches and three divisions of seats like those in a coffee–room– the coaches not open at the top – the seats were. (Simmons 21) Another writer(1) quoted in Simmons wrote, "On my return to Chester I visited Liverpool [in 1836] and traveled from thence, for curiosity, a few miles towards Manchester on that then novel mode of conveyance, a railroad." (Simmons 23) As fascinated as the public was with the railroad, it was also exasperated by the poor service, (train arrival times were never announced and there were accidents quite often), and the cost of riding. The train departure times were announced, but the arrival times were never specified. To travel the length of 31 miles, the trip would take 1 3/4 hours. This rate of travel was not a vast improvement from the 3 1/2 mile per hour train trip of the first railway. Also, trains did not run between 9:00 am and 1:00 PM on Sundays out of respect for religious services. During the time Dombey and Son takes place, 'railway mania' was sweeping England. • 68. The Importance Of The Railway In Canada Canada is a great country but it wouldn't be the same without the Trans Canada Railway. The great achievement of this railway helped form and unite this great country in many ways. These are some of the reasons why I think the CPR helped in forming a strong, united Canada. Confederation on July 1, 1867, brought together the Eastern Colonies of Canada, but as a country, Canada was interested also in making a connection with the West Coast Colonies. One of the ways this was accomplished was by promising to build a railway from coast to coast. The province of Manitoba was convinced to join confederation by 1870, and British Columbia joined in 1871, but only when the Canadian government promised to build the railway within ten years. Unfortunately, that government was unable to follow through with it's promise and true construction only began in 1881 and finally completed in 1885. The first train ran in 1886 from Montreal to Port Moody. The CPR was an important way to connect the large country of Canada. The communities on the West Coast naturally felt like they had more in common with other communities on the coast, such as Oregon and California and may have eventually chosen to ... The company also ended up finding natural gas in Alberta when they were digging a well to find water for their steam engines. • 76. Essay about The Death Railway of World War II Abstract The saying of, "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it" is one that deserves more focus. One might ask, "Why?" The answer is the fact that countless events in history have been overlooked and forgotten. Such is the case of the Thai– Burma Railway also known as the "Death Railway", a line between Bang Pong and Thanbyuzayat. This, in and of itself is a tragedy. The inhuman conditions of thousands of POW's as they labored in the Thai–Burma jungle during World War II is something that should never be forgotten. Those who survived and those who did not deserve commendation for their strength, and reverence as heroes. Thus, why does no one know their story, their suffering, and their past? This past, this history, needs to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What was to be done with them? In the eyes of the Japanese, they were a disgrace to mankind. A Japanese man would rather die than be humiliated with the charge of giving up. They were taught to never surrender and fight until death for their Emperor (Lee, 1998). This concept baffled the Japanese. The idea of prisoners had not occurred to them. These men were dishonorable, and the thought of feeding and taking care of the dishonorable repulsed the Japanese (Pitt & Mason, 1993). For a while, the issue was not dealt with, and the POW's were left alone. Unfortunately, that was not to be their permanent state of being. Soon, an "inspiration" gave light to the issue. The Japanese discovered they held in their hands a free work force. In these dishonorable men, lay the path to accomplishing the new goals being set for a nation at war (La Forte & Marcello, 1993). The Death Railway was one of these "new goals". Its intent was to join two pre–existing railroads; one, running from Singapore to Ban Pong and Bangkok, the other from Ye on the Andaman coast to Rangoon. The plan was to unite these two railroads by building a line from Ban Pong to Thanbyuzayat, a small village 50 miles north of Ye (La Forte & Marcello, 1993). The Railway had three major purposes and desirable attributes for Japan. First, the Railway was to provide supplies and reinforcements as Japan was fighting the British in northern Burma at the time. • 78. How Did The Canadian Pacific Railway Affect Canada Ever since the beginning of its construction in 1881, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has had a profound impact on Canada's political, cultural and geographical landscape. What began as an aspect of John A Macdonald's plan to create a Canada which stretched from sea to sea has since developed into over 200 000 km of railway tracks spanning both Canada and the United States. ("Canadian Pacific Railway," 2017) Just as predicted by Macdonald, the railway acted as a catalyst for the unification and advancement of what would soon become modern Canada. The CPR greatly contributed to the shaping of Canada's identity in several major ways; firstly by influencing the growth and development of major cities, secondly by enabling the settlement of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the CPR, came a culture vastly different than that of the First Nations who had lived in the prairies almost exclusively before its construction. Among the cultural disparities, one of the most glaring was the European philosophy of land ownership which was in direct contradiction with the First Nations' traditional way of life. The land they had previously lived and hunted on had been fenced off and sold to European immigrants. While the introduction of new values was certainly jarring for the First Nations peoples, the destruction of their natural resources was what had the most impact on their culture. Before the construction of the railway, the First Nations relied heavily on the plains buffalo as a resource. The First Nations used the buffalo for food, shelter, tools, and ceremonial ornaments. As the CPR was constructed and the prairies were further developed, the plains buffalo were pushed to extinction and as a result, the First Nations were pushed to near starvation. In response to this issue, the Canadian government then decided they would provide food for the First Nations, but only if they moved onto reservation land. What caused Ranbir concern was the lack of consensus among the various stakeholder groups in the Indian Railways about the idea of 'tracking' the rolling stock (freight railcars, passenger coaches, locomotives). The need to automate such tracking – especially for freight railcars6 – had been felt for almost two decades. Initially, the available technology was too expensive, and experimental in nature; however, lately, technologies had stabilized, and costs had come down. Various options had become available to automate the tracking, ranging from the use of RFID tags to the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS)–based technology. Other available alternatives were the use of optical tracking systems using OCR, or the use of hand–held devices to
