Rebekah Whalley, Manchester-born fashion designer now singer/song writer has produced her first
top single which reached number 1 in the charts in just 7 days, aged just 17. She was first noticed by
the indie-rock band The Arctic Monkeys after uploading singing videos to YouTube, social media sites
such as Facebook and Twitter carried on the craze and the band apparently contacted her asking for
a song demo. Alex Turner called her “a remarkable and talented young lady”. We heard from
Rebekah herself as she took time out of her busy schedule to speak exclusively to ATC.
Rebekah, it’s a pleasure to have you here. I’m a big fan myself. What made you quit Fashion to go
into music?
It’s good to be here, I love this magazine! It’s surreal that I’m on the front cover of a magazine that I
use to read and think to myself ‘I want to be on that magazine one day’. Well I love fashion, I’m still
continuing it but I’ve always wanted to pursue a music career.
What have you got planned for the rest of this year? Should we be looking forward to another hit
single? Maybe even an album?
I’ve got a few things planned; I can’t reveal too much but expect a few surprises. It’s been manic
trying to fit everything in, music is a big commitment. I never know what time I’ll finish in the
recording studio, but it’s worth it.
So, what’s Alex Turner like? You must be overwhelmed to be noticed by such a successful band.
Alex is great, he’s really supportive of my music, and the whole band is. It’s actually a dream, just a
few months ago I was sat in my bedroom listening to their songs and now I’m producing songs with
them, it’s amazing.
How do you still have time to fit fashion into your busy schedule?
It’s not easy but I find time somehow, I’m helping out back stage at the Marc by Marc Jacobs catwalk
in London in a few weeks so I have a lot of planning and work to do but I’d never quit it completely,
also my fashion fits into my music work as I design the clothes I want for my music videos and clips
so I’m basically doing both the jobs I love at the same time which is more than a dream for me.
That’s a hectic schedule; do you ever have time to yourself? How do you spend your spare time?
I do have time to myself but it’s not for long, there’s always someone calling about a new shoot or a
catwalk design but I don’t mind, it’s all part of the job. I can’t complain. I watch a good film or get
stuck into a book, I usually only get a few hours to myself. I have to get a good workout in there and
catch up on much-needed sleep, it’s a tiring job.
Which artist/band would you LOVE to work with the most?
The Arctic Monkeys are at the top of my list but I’d love to work with The 1975 and Jake Bugg, Jake
and I have become really good friends I knew him whilst I was in fashion, but I must admit I’m a
HUGE fan of Coldplay, I attended their concert in 2012, it was amazing!
Our last question for you Rebekah is, there have been rumours that you are dating fellow musician
Jake Bugg, are these true?
Not at all, Jake and I are just good friends. I would like to work with him on some tracks, we’re
friends nothing more. He’s a great guy.
Thank you for coming and talking to us Rebekah it’s been great getting to know you, we hope to
hear from you soon.
It’s been good, thank you! You’ll be hearing a lot from me!
