Chicano Film Analysis
Chicano Films for Future Chicanos Chicano film is a special and important genre of film that has
become an outlet for Chicanos in order for their voices to be heard and stories to be seen by all.
After watching a number of Chicano films this semester, I have gained a deeper understanding of
Chicano history and have even been able to relate to many of the stories, conflicts, struggles, and
pride shared through these films. I feel as though Chicano film has progressed quite a bit since the
beginning of Chicano cinema in 1954 when Salt of the Earth was released, and many modern films
have allowed different perspectives to be seen regarding Chicano and overall Latino culture. If I had
to choose two major films to pass onto future generations of ... Show more content on

The students both in Walkout and Stand and Deliver experience some sort of discrimination brought
on by administrators at their own schools. In Walkout, Paula and her classmates face apathy from
school officials after asking for reform in their school system, due to the fact that they attend an East
Los Angeles public school filled with mainly low– income Chicano students. In a particularly
powerful scene, the filmmaker showcases this apathy in a high angle shot, when the school board
dismisses a call for action by Paula, her classmates, and Sal Castro after they show up to a meeting.
In Stand and Deliver, we see the same event happen in a scene when Jaime Escalante proposes
teaching calculus to his students during a board meeting. The filmmaker uses reaction shots and
close up shots to show the other school teachers and administrators disapproval over the idea, stating
that they do not believe the Latino students in the school can rise up to the challenge. I believe that
this is very influential, especially with Chicano students, as discrimination in film can serve as a
teaching lesson to be more empathetic and open minded to others who are different in some

Trust in Freedom Writers and Stand and Deliver
Both Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers and Jamie Esclante in Stand and Deliver faced students stuck
in low–income backgrounds and neighborhoods of crime. Despite the low achievement of these
students, both teachers were able to foster a mastery of a subject to their students. Even though the
subjects of English and math are extremely different, one method united both teachers and allowed
them to teach their students effectively– trust. Erin and Jamie were successful because of the trust
they put in their students. In both Erin's and Jamie's school, there was a fundamental distrust of the
students by the faculty and a fundamental distrust of the faculty by the students. This environment
led to a disconnect between the faculty's methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, the trust placed in the students allowed both Erin and Jamie to "raise the bar" of their
expectations. By trusting the students are capable and willing to learn in the right environment, both
teachers avoided the trap of teaching remedial methods that seem to match their level of
comprehension and understanding. Instead, both teachers trusted that their students had a greater
capacity to learn than what the school system gave them credit for. It was this trust in the students
that allowed both Erin and Jamie to start teaching information that was previously seen as
impossible for those students to comprehend correctly and adequately. It was this trust in the
students by Erin and Jamie that allowed them to raise the bar. Both teachers expected more of their
students than the other teachers in the school, but students generally seen as lazy and apathetic
towards school meet those expectations against conventional wisdom. The reason for this is that
while raising the bar, both teachers trusted that their students would reach it. Other teachers could
have raised the bar, but because of the lack of trust between the teacher and the students, the
teachers would not expect anything, thus the students wouldn't do anything. Adding the element of
trust to the equation made the students realize that they were expected and trusted to meet

Stand and Deliver in the Film Blackboard Jungle
The controversial 1955 movie Blackboard Jungle, adapted from the novel The Blackboard Jungle by
Evan Hunter, follows the experiences of a new teacher, Mr. Richard Dadier played by Glen Ford, at
the all–boys inner–city North Manual High School. The school's students are juvenile delinquents
exhibiting violent and anti–social behavior. The film portrays the challenges Mr. Dadier and the
other teachers face in their efforts to reach the students and capture their interests to learn. The result
of the violence he experiences at school is revealed in Mr. Dadier's home life as well; the effect it
has on his wife causes him to consider resigning his position at the school. In a subplot, another new
teacher at the school, an attractive single woman, Miss Lois Hammond played by Margaret Hayes,
is attracted to Mr. Dadier.
The movie represented an important change in films, by presenting relevant cultural issues occurring
in society. The film similarly had a significant effect in music by using Rock 'n' Roll music in the
soundtrack, making Bill Haley and the Comets "Rock Around the Clock" an instant hit song. The
movie received Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay; Best Cinematography;
Best Art Direction; and Film Editing. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) acknowledged the soundtrack
among the most influential of all time explaining it by stating:
MGM brought Hollywood into the Rock 'n' Roll era with Blackboard Jungle. In search of the kind
of music teens like the film's

In This Class I Have Learned That Sociology Is Everywhere.
In this class I have learned that sociology is everywhere. I got a better understanding of how our life
chances and shape by social structure and how it could have affected our self and society. We get
understand where the people come from and understanding of behaviors and struggles of other
people. We all watch movies right? Well in the movies they also replicate and show the understand
of sociology even the movies that are base on true story. I watched two different movies such as
"Stand and Deliver" and "The Color People," that demonstrated the sociology perspectives that I
have learned. The movies are good way to manifest learning and teach us how the world views
characters in their movies and understand values. I learn there are ... Show more content on

Stand and Deliver can even been seen as an example of functionalism, "a group whose values,
beliefs, norms, and related behaviors place its member in opposition to the broador culture"( ). Also
in the film women of the Hispanic race are portrayed to drop out of school because in the Hispanic
culture woman are expected to stay home, be homemaker and care for the children. Parents also are
a factor in Hispanic culture that they question are motives to have an education. That men didn't like
women that are smarter and of course independent. This factors are betray in the movie, and also in
real life is the Hispanic culture. Through out the movie you see difficulties that the students are
trying to finally fit to be part of the system but they still may not be accepted because of their
classes. With low achieving school, have a suspicious amount of high test scores the reliability and
dependability are questioned. Conflict theory is used that the struggle in society and schools
between the haves and have nots. For example, not funding for computer, not having computers, no
air conditioning for summer and less opportunities for students in general. The school is portrayed
as a place where students do not want to be or care about being in school. The staff don't care about
the students especially they gave up on them. There is a quote that I got from the movie, that Mr.
Escalante was asking the math department for calculus

Stand And Deliver Reflection
Stand and Deliver, is based in East Los Angeles High School that would not typically belong to high
achieving math students. However, when Mr. Escalante starts working there, things begin to change.
First off, he was supposed to teach computer science, but was told he was teaching math when he
started actually working. When he first started teaching, he was faced with many obstacles. His first
day in the classroom, there were more kids than there were desks. Even so, the students' first
language also created a learning barrier. Mr. Escalante asked the students who spoke Spanish move
to the front of the class, and students who spoke English were asked to move to the back.
Throughout the basic course, and even up through his teaching of calculus, Mr. Escalante also had to
combat the students' bad behavior. In the beginning of the movie, a student decided to try to act like
a thug, and threatened Mr. Escalante if he did not run the class like he wanted, the teacher would
face repercussions. When Mr. Escalante gave the student, Angel, three textbooks, Angel granted
protection from the thug students. Even so, as time progresses on ... Show more content on

Escalante as a teacher, I do not think his methods would work for all students at Swansboro High
School. Personally, I would be fine with his teaching methods. I am so used to Mr. Walsh roasting
me, I think I would be okay with Mr. Escalante's roasts. However, I think the rest of Swansboro is
too fragile to handle Mr. Escalante's approaches on learning. Most people would be offended with
his methods, complain to administration, and the ability to do his job would suffer. Swansboro High
School's teaching staff has a unique dynamic and I do not think Mr. Escalante would fit into the way
things are done. It is unfortunate we cannot employ talented teachers more often, but I have seen the
way this school works. However, I am thankful to have had Mr. Walsh and Mr. Matticola as they

Stand And Deliver Essay
Education is a vital medium of acquiring knowledge and skills. Education, however, can have
different meanings to various people, but learning has to take place for it to be complete. It is an
effort from the senior individuals to transfer the knowledge they have to other members of the
society. Institutions play a significant role in integrating people with their community and maintain
preservation of culture. Some of these issues have been well portrayed in the film Stand and Deliver.
The story of Jaime Escalante, who is a high school teacher proves the benefits of education to all.
He manages to inspire prone dropout students to study calculus and pass, making many to doubt
leading to his student rewriting the exam. The movie as per its ... Show more content on

The society that is used to failure will not easily accept any good results until they have evidence.
This norm should be changed in the lives of some teachers as they influence a lot in the society.
Teachers inspire students, but in the movie, they have failed to do so except Escalante. If they
instilled good morals, advised on the best lifestyle and helping students in their crisis. They would
have increased the motivation of these students, but they are not doing so and even when Escalante
try, they want to discourage him. Some individual in society have utterly failed to recognize the
student's effort, and any good results these students brings is overlooked. They don't have faith with
the students anymore which is something that has been clearly shown in this film. The Education
Testing Service doubts the results pulled by the students in Garfield high school as they accuse the
students of cheating and asking the students to retake the test. Escalante associates this accusation to
the poor economic status and racial discrimination to the students. The challenge in the education
sector is that the students from poor backgrounds are seen as underdogs who can't compete with

Standardized Testing As Depicted In 'Stand And Deliver'
No one should ever be judged based on gender, race, religion, or economic status. Unfortunately,
that isn't always the case. People are constantly being judged solely for the contributions. In the
movie, "Stand and Deliver" is about a group of students is judged based on race and economic
status. Mr. Escalante takes on the challenge of proving everyone wrong. He is an educator that fights
and advocates for his students. Not only does he push his students to their fullest potential, but also
he believes in them and shatters the stereotypical wall built around them. Throughout the movie, Mr.
Escalante is challenged by the idea that his students and everyone else in the school do not believe
in themselves. They have been told over and over that they will never amount to anything and
therefore, that is what they've accepted. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Escalante, a math teacher, has this notion to prove everyone wrong. He takes his intelligence and
ability to connect with students to change the lives of his students forever. Mr. Escalante pushes his
students to overcome great encounters. Stand and Deliver highlights the realities of stakes testing.
Students throughout the U.S. are required to take standardized tests. Standardized testing is a
controversial issue still today. These tests are used to indicate the average level a student is
academically. The problem is, these tests are not accurate at all. The work Mr. Escalante did with his
students is relative to today's educators and their students. Mr. Escalante did more than provide a
strong base of academics. He broke down walls they seemed permanent. Adapting to each child's

Analysis Of Culture Clash: A Bowl Of Beings
Culture Clash – A Bowl of Beings
Bowl of Beings is a assortment of sketches and dialogues about Latino life in America, examining
what Chicanismo was all in relation to and the contradictions of it and how challenging it is. Culture
Clash's scenes are diverse to the max. Culture Clash pursues to characterize contemporary Chicano
life in the United States. The first scene , "Don Colon," draws together a "Godfather" imitation, a
humorous allegory, some shots at the Columbus 500TH anniversary. In "Stand and Deliver Pizza"
Culture Clash aims to present additional Chicano characters that can be interpreted as macho, and
demonstrate different manners and traits, including homosexual appeal. "Stand and Deliver Pizza" is

One of the adolescences is a unassimilated "cholo", a Chicano gang–banger, and the other is a
leather–jacketed "rockero:, a Chicano heavy metal fan. The older Chicano man interchanges
between being a pachuco and a Jaime Escalante "type" while attempting to educate the men how
make pizzas. The emergence of the pachuco symbolizes a reflective suggestion to the presumed
wonder days of the Chicano Movimiento and proposes an fictional and idealistic mediator of
revolution and opposition. Culture Clash ties with the 1988 Ramon Menéndez film Stand and
Deliver, also starring Olmos the true–life story of Garfield High School math teacher Jaime
Escalante as this pachuco–Jamie Escalante "type" wants the young men to comprehend that they are
faces of the similar identity and aspires them to turn out to be progressive examples of Mexican
machismo. Culture Clash describes the alteration of Chicano biases in the mass media from a
idealized person of opposition that obtains its rule from its rejection to participate with the ordinary
to the character of the inspiring math teacher. By creating the contrast of the pachuco with the math
teacher in this mode, Culture Clash entertainingly depicts the harsh roles on hand to Chicanos in
mainstream mass media and mocks the great switch from one role to the next.

Stand And Deliver Themes
Stand and Deliver– Relevancy Today The film Stand and Deliver follows math teacher Jaime
Escalante's determination to motivate underprivileged students and help them reach academic
excellence. At the end of this whole journey, the students are able to realize their full potential and
grow from the experience. There are several universal themes that the filmmaker is able to express
through the use of various impactful filmmaking techniques. I believe that the film's passion is still
relevant today, as the themes showcased throughout the film can very much be understood and
empathized with by a diverse range of students in modern times. One of the themes that stand out
the most in the film is the struggle to overcome adversity and push through problems in one's life
that could otherwise get in the way from achieving goals. In the film, many ... Show more content

In the film, various students are shown to be quite vocal about what they believe they cannot
accomplish, and this mainly revolves around Jaime Escalante's math class. Many students claim that
math is just not for them, that they do not understand it and are better off without it. The filmmaker
specifically shows this through a scene in the beginning of the film when Escalante asks different
students a simple question on a basic concept in math and given in return unsure answers. The
filmmaker gives close up shots of the students looking down at their desks, seemingly unconfident
in their own understanding of basic math. The students at first resist trying to take math seriously,
but with time Escalante eventually succeeds at sparking their interest and showing them that they
are capable of a lot more than they believe to be possible. Plenty of students today deal with low
self–esteem and may even limit their own advancement and achievements simply because they do

Title: Team Application
Author: Team One
Charles Brereton, David Wolff, David Walker, Garret Ryan, Conner Freeland
Introduction/Objective: Each team member watched the movie, "Stand and Deliver" and completed
the discussion questions in this week's team application, (Musca and Menendez, 1988). During our
team discussion, we analyzed the leadership qualities of Escalante. The team discussed how
Escalante could read his environment, knowing himself and how to effectively implement his
application of leading. The author notes the importance of knowing yourself by identifying who you
are and what you stand for, (Bennis, 2009). As a team, we discussed Escalante's ability to be
flexible, by changing his approach to overcome a challenging situation. The team agreed that
Escalante followed an authentic style of leading. The team noted that this method of instruction
would probably not be an acceptable practice in most schools. The setting for which this movie was
depicted was a lower level high school that was in the midst of losing their accreditation, (Musca
and Menendez, 1988). The team discussed members of the faculty and their behavior towards their
students. The faculty lacked the essential leadership qualities that are needed to properly motivate
their students to become successful in obtaining a higher level of education. The team members
agreed that a majority of the teaching staff followed the transactional method of leading. The team

Stereotypes In Stand And Deliver By Jaime Escalante
The movie Stand and Deliver (1988) begins with a character driving in an urban neighborhood as an
introduction to the setting of the film. The various shots of the setting that are presented between
cuts to the streets and to the intrigued face of the protagonist, Jaime Escalante, help provide the
viewer context to this neighborhood's economic and cultural background. This movie directed by
Ramón Menéndez dramatizes actual events into a movie with the idea of combating stereotypes
enforced upon low income Latinos and presenting a success story with the use of different Latino
characters with their own unique conflicts. Angel Guzman is a Chicano gang member that holds an
inner struggle between following the "easy predetermined path" ... Show more content on

Latinos are portrayed in media as having to fight a large variety of forces and this film attempts to
document a couple of these through their characters. Guadalupe Molina, struggles to take care of her
brothers and sisters while her parents work; Ana Delgado, is pressured to drop out of school to begin
working in her family business; Claudia Camejo; is discouraged to pursue Calculus by her mother
because "boys don't like you if you're too smart"; and Pancho is encouraged to drop out of school to
work as a mechanic for what he believes is a reasonable wage. The AP Calculus gives the students
hope to enter college, evidenced by a scene in which Angel brings his sick grandma to Mr.
Escalante's house on Christmas to ask him for another chance to be in the class. He tells Mr.
Escalante, "I need Calculus to get me to a good career Johnny." The film uses a variety of examples
of adversity in attempt to make this story seem more "inspirational" but the characters in this film
are not given more personal characteristics and simply identifiable by their struggles. The audience
does not know about their likes or dislikes, or a lot about their personalities. They are a diverse
Latino cast but their usage as people that just need to be "saved" does not give these

The question if geniuses are born or made is a long standing argument between two sides but it is no
question that one must acquire sufficient expertise in an achievement to be considered a genius, and
to do that, they must have the opportunity to do so. Thus, Intelligence depends on environmental
factors as perfectly depicted in the movie, "Stand and Deliver".
Stand and Deliver features Jaime Escalante, who chooses to leave his high–paying job to take a

It's important to note that these students have low academic skills not because of genetics, but
because of their upbringings and social expectations due to their race and economic status. Escalante
realizes the toxic environment and starts setting forth a better example for students to follow, an
example that wasn't present in their surroundings before. By setting a better learning situation, he is
able to not only teach them basic math, but pushes them to learn more advanced mathematics and
even inspire the most troublesome of students. Escalante eventually gets the bright idea to prepare
the kids for the national Advance Placement Calculus test, one of the most challenging of all
preparatory test that can earn early college credits. He is met with backlash from the teachers who
say, "You can't teach logarithms to illiterates." Jaime believes otherwise, and the students proceed to
prove them wrong by finding the courage to separate themselves from societies expectations for
failure and to rise above through hard work and dedication. Their rigorous study sessions and desire
to learn pay off by receiving astounding scores on the AP test and reaching their goals. However,
their toxic environment bites them again when the

Movie Review : Stand And Deliver
Leadership Movie Review Stand and Deliver unfolds as a new professor takes over an apathetic yet
vociferous math class in a disadvantaged part of town. His belief in the capabilities of the lowly–
educated minority class, along with their hunger to learn, accomplished their shared vision of all 18
students passing the AP calculus exam at the end of their senior year. Mr. Escalante applied strategic
techniques in teaching his class. Quickly earning respect, building relationships, and establishing
clear goals, allowed him to bring the class to a level no one previously thought possible. Quickly
earning respect Mr. Escalante used specific behaviors at first, providing rigid structure–he laid down
the law at the beginning to demonstrate his high expectations and resolution to accomplish the end
goal. He seemed to not care if any student just decided to be done. He gave them no opportunity to
behave disrespectfully, by challenging each one right where they were. He led well at all levels: he
taught with fervor and gusto, speaking individually to each student's unique needs, as well as
conversing respectfully with parents, and providing his input to other teachers. He took a more
laissez–faire attitude by simply giving the school board an ultimatum of quitting, should they not
abide by his requests and methods. This proved useful in that environment. Kemo, as the students
lovingly began to call Mr. Escalante, valued authenticity, using the right amount of transparency to

Escalante, Stand And Deliver: Summary

Movie Stand And Deliver As An Excellent Teacher
I would rate Mr. Escalante as depicted in the movie Stand and Deliver as an excellent teacher! Ron
Clark a renown and excellent teacher in his own right, states there are 11 characteristics that should
be found in every teacher who is raising children who love to learn. These characteristics included
enthusiasm, adventure, creativity, balance, compassionate, fun, common sense, appreciation,
resilience and accountable. I observed every one of these characteristics in the character of Mr.
Escalante in the movie Stand and Deliver. In the beginning of the movie, as Mr. Escalante began this
experience, I do not believe he knew things were as bad as what he encountered on the first day of
school. Classrooms with graffiti on the inside, insufficient chairs for the number of students
assigned in the classroom, high school students attending school without school supplies, students
vandalizing their school and defecating in the office, rigging the bell to completely disrupt the
school day, even students inside the classroom without any desire to learn.
I would not be intimidated by Mr. Escalante's techniques. I have the utmost respect for teachers who
are willing to go outside the norm to teach children. Mr. Escalante believed that there was only one
thing that was needed for the children to succeed, ganas. It was all he told the Principal he needed
and all he asked for the students "You're going to work harder here than you've ever worked

Characters Of The Teacher In The Movie 'Stand And Deliver'

For example, when she said the word "process" and I did not know what it meant, she drew an

seriously wanted me to pass the class with a grade of A or B because she knew I took a hard time
learning new lessons. These were the things she helped me to pass the class because to get out of

themselves and Mrs. Aguirre told me to do my best by keeping trying. According to the movie
"Stand and Deliver, Escalante states, "......Parenthesis means multiply. Every time you see this, you
multiply. A negative times a negative equals a positive. A negative times a negative equals a
positive. Say it!A negative times a negative equals a positive. Say it!." It seems like Escalante wants
the students to say it out loud with confidence, so they can remember what the problem is. When
Escalante writes negative two plus two equal on the chalkboard, he asks one of his students to say
the answer to see if she or he knows the answer. For example, he asks Angel to answer what is
negative two plus two equal. Angel does not answer, so Escalante makes him say the answer. It was

Stand And Deliver Movie Citation
Stand and Deliver: Movie about an Educational Setting
In order to complete this assignment, I decided to focus on the educational setting of the film "Stand
and Deliver". Stand and Deliver took place in the year 1987 and was focused on demonstrating the
life challenges that students faced in the city of East Los Angeles California. This movie is based on
the true story of a mathematics teacher who motivated high school students at Garfield High School
to learn about calculus. Additionally, this film will identify the context, norms, values, language,
gender roles and the social structures of the movie.
In this film, Garfield high school is located in a poor neighborhood in East Los Angeles. The movie
portrayed this neighborhood as a location that was surrounded by violence, fights, and crimes. Every
night it was very common for the residents living in this neighborhood to witness fights among gang
members, and hear shootings and ambulance sirens. The majority of people who lived in this
neighborhood were Hispanic and Latino. They also lived ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

complete chores. As a result, the female students believed that completing an education was not
important because their role was to get married at a young age and learn how to raise a household.
Similarly, male students were expected to work and provide income for their families. For many
male students, their role was to work hard at their jobs in order to help their parents pay for rent and

Analysis Of The Movie ' Stand And Deliver '
This paper will be explaining the different types of leadership skill that I notice in the movie Stand
and Deliver. The movie is a true story about a teacher who fought against all odd to help poor Latin
students to pass the advance placement test in calculus. He motivates the students with everything
that he could think of. The students received such a high test score that the testing center though
they had cheated. The first leadership theory Jamie Escalante demonstrates is Leader–Member
Exchange theory. Jamie is waking the hall, looking for his classroom. Jamie enters the classroom, he
sees the students standing and talking, he sees girls sitting in boys lap. Jamie tells the student to take
a seat. They act like they don't hear him talking. Jamie tell them again to take a seat, one girl makes
a comment asking if the class can talk about sex. Jamie comment, "what one female student
mentions could cost me my job.' The students stop talking and start looking at Jamie and wondering
what he is talking about. The second leadership theory Jamie shows is Situational Approach, when
Angel and Finger Man come late to class. Jamie has Finger Man to take the seat in the front of the
class and Angel to stand in the back. Jamie asks Finger Man if he brought his tools to class. Finger
Man tells Jamie that he uses his head. Jamie then tells him that this is his class and if he wants to be
a part then he needs to be on time. During the staff meeting Mr. Molina (principal)

Stand And Deliver Essay
Ramon Menendez's true–story based film Stand and Deliver is a moving and inspirational narrative
of The American School System crises of an inner–city school in East Los Angeles. In contrast to
the pessimistic outlook of Garfield High's administration, Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos), a
calculus high school teacher, transforms the lives of unprivileged Hispanic students. The film
presents the extensive barriers Escalante and his students face by the social and economic forces that
hinder education in the inner–city of East Los Angeles. I will apply the criteria of the film's plot,
characters and technical aspects to validating the success of Mr. Escalante's motivational skills, the
student's endeavor, and the extensive conflict of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the second half of the film, the character performance of Mr. Escalante is genuine to the
circumstance of quality education and inspiration for his students in the midst of exposure to drug
use, gang participation, and doubt of success. He is not glorified as a teacher, but rather seen as a
teacher raising the expectations for students who have never had the opportunity to show what they
are capable of. Escalante encourages his students to surpass their fear of failure and take the AP
calculus exam. However, The Educational Testing Service (ETS), which administers the exam, notes
the same mistakes in a number of the student's exams and concludes that the students cheated. The
ETS investigators attempt to persuade the students to confess of their cheating. Escalante and his
students feel demoralized due to this accusation. Escalante decides to confront the ETS investigators
(Andy Garcia and Rif Hutton). Escalante is furious and brings up the fact that if the students were
from an upper–class suburb and didn't have Hispanic names that their scores would have never been
questioned. Escalante begins to question his own teaching skills and the pressure he laid on his
students to gain "ganas" or desire to succeed. The authenticity of Escalante's character shines
through due to the portrayal of human weakness and soul searching to overcome

Achievement, Work, and Careers in Stand and Deliver
Stand and Deliver follows an idiosyncratic teacher, Jaime Escalante, and his high school students
throughout the course of a few years. Escalante pushes his students to excel in mathematics through
the course of a few years, in spite of the low expectations placed on them because of their ethnicity
and low socioeconomic status. While they begin with skills far below their grade level, they work
their way up to learning calculus and they all pass the AP Calculus Exam. Connections abound
between the film and the chapter of Santrock's (2016) text devoted to achievement, work, and career
development.

Booker T Washington 1894 Atlanta Compromise Speech Analysis
In Booker T. Washington's 1895 Atlanta Compromise Speech, he is trying to convince his audience
by using vivid imagery, allegories, repetition, and reasonable ideas. He uses an optimistic tone to
convey four appeals. Throughout the whole speech, he establishes his credibility to a predominantly
white audience to make his point stand out for the changes he believes are necessary.
Booker T. Washington delivers the 1895 Atlanta Compromise Speech to a white and black audience
about the equality blacks and whites deserve. As a black speaker in the north, Washington influences
and impresses many of the northern citizens with his moving speech. Washington brought with him
"...evidence of racial progress in the South". His audience contained the president and the board of
directors as well as citizens.
In the beginning, Washington uses vivid imagery through his ideas. He begins his speech with
strong statistics, "One–third of the population of the South is of the Negro race. No enterprise
seeking the material, civil, or moral welfare of this section can disregard this element of our
population and reach the highest success," (Washington 1). Using logos in this speech shows his
strong points to his audience revealing a realistic view of what is going on around them, and
represent the kind of power the black population actually has. Washington also applies ethos in his
opening statements by establishing his credibility and aspirations. "American Negro been more
fittingly and generously recognized than by the managers of this magnificent Exposition at every
stage of its progress. It is a recognition that will do more to cement the friendship of the two races
than any occurrence since the dawn of our freedom," (Washington 1). He uses this to to express his
aspirations for the long run and establish where he stands. Without this section, Washington may not
have everyone's attention in the audience. The purpose may not be understood as clearly. Later in his
speech, Washington uses strong rhetorical devices to deliver more examples of his point of view and
feelings on this topic. Washington uses many powerful rhetorical devices throughout his speech,
including this allegory, "A ship lost at sea for many days suddenly

Lemonade Stand, Part 1
Develop a creative name for your lemonade stand, and then explain why a name is important when
you are considering branding options. The name that I have chosen to go with for my lemonade

This wasn't very given light on the subject however it is clear it is an issue due to the whole school
having an academic failure and being played by an all–black cast. 1988 was the time a film "Stand

students taking AP calculus in a low academic achieving school. The school board doesn't believe
they can produce great marks. As said by their mentor Jaime Escalante said: "Those scores would
have never been questioned if my kids did not have Spanish surnames and come from burial
grounds." The same correlation can be made in the movie "Great Debaters" directed by Denzel
Washington in 2007 when a black debating team staying in a white prominent community is chased
off by some of the town members after witnessing a lynching of the black citizen. Is it obvious that
they are being discriminated after a white townsperson exclaims "There's niggers in that car" and
chases after them. This film takes a more radical approach to discrimination, which creates a more
impactful emphasis on discrimination. A film that doesn't acknowledge discrimination however

use these categories to organize the massive amounts data obtained from our everyday environment

According to talkproverty.org 21.4% of Hispanics in America are living in poverty. A book call The

Hispanic in America. The House on Mango Street is similar to the movie, Stand and Deliver because
the characters were judged based on where they lives, the characters have low self esteem, and the
females were expected to take care of family. The House on Mango Street is also different from the
movie, "Stand and Deliver," because of the encouragement the characters received by adults, the
relationships the characters build, and the different viewpoint the characters have on where they will

School of Rock is a classic movie (in the millennials' generation) that almost no one can turn his/her

This same thing happened in the 1960's with African Americans, when Maya Angelou wrote the
poem "Caged Bird". African Americans were seen as property rather than people and they were
being treated as such. However no one considered the fact that we are all birds, yet one is locked up.
We are all birds, yet one has that capability of "naming the sky his own" (Angelou). We are all birds,
yet one has everything tied up. Though, the one difference that the caged bird has from the free bird,
is the power of its voice. "The most valuable thing that one can sacrifice is his voice" (Smith). When
people are being beat up because of their sexuality and people don't stop to do anything, that is
weakness (Smith). When people are asking for money, because they are going through a hard time
in their lives, yet no one stops to help, that is greed (Smith). When someone doesn't have control
over the way people will view them and get treated differently than others, that is oppression.
Oppression is still present in this day and age, but isn't seen in the severity that it was in the past.
Undoubtedly, there is still oppression present to this day, but people just don't take it into

Movie Analysis : ' The Big Bucks '
As many aspire to earn careers that either make money or improve their social status, teachers are
the few who instead of earning the big bucks, will settle to inspire the young, and mold the future. It
is an educator's goal to promote the desire to learn as stated by Jaime Escalante in Stand and
Deliver: "If you don 't have the ganas [or desire], I will give it to you because I 'm an expert."
(Menéndez). Future teachers can learn from the film Stand and Deliver to appreciate the positive
impact educators can have on students facing an adversary, such as life. The film proves as valid
inspiration through the main character, Jaime Escalante's, realistic tools to his job such creating
relationship with the students, challenging the class, and an authentic concern for the students'
success. Teachers can earn their right to inspire by creating a relationship with the class. As Sara
Quay and Quaglia Russell state "The more your students feel that they are part of the classroom
community, the more likely they are to become connected to the course, the subject, and even the
school." It is because of this that the Jaime Escalante was so successful with his class. The teacher is
usually held accountable for the student ability or inability to learn, what most people don't consider
is the fact that one of the largest factor in a student learning, is what is going on in their personal

introduction to the setting of the film. The various shots of the setting that are presented between
cuts to the streets and to the intrigued face of the protagonist, Jaime Escalante, help provide the
viewer context to this neighborhood's economic and cultural background. This movie directed by
Ramon Menendez dramatizes actual events into a movie with the idea of combating stereotypes
enforced upon low income Latinos and presenting a success story with the use of different Latino
characters with their own unique conflicts. Angel Guzman is a Chicano gang member that holds an
inner struggle between following the "easy predetermined path" that promises ... Show more content

A study by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, Marc Choueiti, and Dr. Katherine Pieper at the University of
Southern California claims that "Across 100 top–grossing films of 2012 only 10.8% of speaking
characters are Black, 4.2% are Hispanic, 5% are Asian, and 3.6% are from other (or mixed race)
ethnicities." These figures are unfortunate because having multiple Latino roles in American films is
beneficial in representing a diverse Latino community which avoids the portrayal of a single
character as a token representative of an entire race. The movie Stand and Deliver was even added
to the Library of Congress' National Film Registry which described it as "one of the most popular of
a new wave of narrative feature films produced in the 1980s by Latino filmmakers." Therefore, the
images that this movie conveys continues to hold a great importance in the representation of
Latinos, particularly in the treatment of characters that could further promote stereotypes. There is a
slight danger in a movie that defines itself as an exception because the problem is not necessarily the
"success" aspect of the narrative, but its singularity of representation of Latino culture. The movie is
an important representation of Latinos in popular

Chicano Film Analysis

  • 1. Chicano Film Analysis Chicano Films for Future Chicanos Chicano film is a special and important genre of film that has become an outlet for Chicanos in order for their voices to be heard and stories to be seen by all. After watching a number of Chicano films this semester, I have gained a deeper understanding of Chicano history and have even been able to relate to many of the stories, conflicts, struggles, and pride shared through these films. I feel as though Chicano film has progressed quite a bit since the beginning of Chicano cinema in 1954 when Salt of the Earth was released, and many modern films have allowed different perspectives to be seen regarding Chicano and overall Latino culture. If I had to choose two major films to pass onto future generations of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The students both in Walkout and Stand and Deliver experience some sort of discrimination brought on by administrators at their own schools. In Walkout, Paula and her classmates face apathy from school officials after asking for reform in their school system, due to the fact that they attend an East Los Angeles public school filled with mainly low– income Chicano students. In a particularly powerful scene, the filmmaker showcases this apathy in a high angle shot, when the school board dismisses a call for action by Paula, her classmates, and Sal Castro after they show up to a meeting. In Stand and Deliver, we see the same event happen in a scene when Jaime Escalante proposes teaching calculus to his students during a board meeting. The filmmaker uses reaction shots and close up shots to show the other school teachers and administrators disapproval over the idea, stating that they do not believe the Latino students in the school can rise up to the challenge. I believe that this is very influential, especially with Chicano students, as discrimination in film can serve as a teaching lesson to be more empathetic and open minded to others who are different in some ... • 2. Trust in Freedom Writers and Stand and Deliver Both Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers and Jamie Esclante in Stand and Deliver faced students stuck in low–income backgrounds and neighborhoods of crime. Despite the low achievement of these students, both teachers were able to foster a mastery of a subject to their students. Even though the subjects of English and math are extremely different, one method united both teachers and allowed them to teach their students effectively– trust. Erin and Jamie were successful because of the trust they put in their students. In both Erin's and Jamie's school, there was a fundamental distrust of the students by the faculty and a fundamental distrust of the faculty by the students. This environment led to a disconnect between the faculty's methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, the trust placed in the students allowed both Erin and Jamie to "raise the bar" of their expectations. By trusting the students are capable and willing to learn in the right environment, both teachers avoided the trap of teaching remedial methods that seem to match their level of comprehension and understanding. Instead, both teachers trusted that their students had a greater capacity to learn than what the school system gave them credit for. It was this trust in the students that allowed both Erin and Jamie to start teaching information that was previously seen as impossible for those students to comprehend correctly and adequately. It was this trust in the students by Erin and Jamie that allowed them to raise the bar. Both teachers expected more of their students than the other teachers in the school, but students generally seen as lazy and apathetic towards school meet those expectations against conventional wisdom. The reason for this is that while raising the bar, both teachers trusted that their students would reach it. Other teachers could have raised the bar, but because of the lack of trust between the teacher and the students, the teachers would not expect anything, thus the students wouldn't do anything. Adding the element of trust to the equation made the students realize that they were expected and trusted to meet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Stand and Deliver in the Film Blackboard Jungle The controversial 1955 movie Blackboard Jungle, adapted from the novel The Blackboard Jungle by Evan Hunter, follows the experiences of a new teacher, Mr. Richard Dadier played by Glen Ford, at the all–boys inner–city North Manual High School. The school's students are juvenile delinquents exhibiting violent and anti–social behavior. The film portrays the challenges Mr. Dadier and the other teachers face in their efforts to reach the students and capture their interests to learn. The result of the violence he experiences at school is revealed in Mr. Dadier's home life as well; the effect it has on his wife causes him to consider resigning his position at the school. In a subplot, another new teacher at the school, an attractive single woman, Miss Lois Hammond played by Margaret Hayes, is attracted to Mr. Dadier. The movie represented an important change in films, by presenting relevant cultural issues occurring in society. The film similarly had a significant effect in music by using Rock 'n' Roll music in the soundtrack, making Bill Haley and the Comets "Rock Around the Clock" an instant hit song. The movie received Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay; Best Cinematography; Best Art Direction; and Film Editing. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) acknowledged the soundtrack among the most influential of all time explaining it by stating: MGM brought Hollywood into the Rock 'n' Roll era with Blackboard Jungle. Well in the movies they also replicate and show the understand of sociology even the movies that are base on true story. Stand and Deliver can even been seen as an example of functionalism, "a group whose values, beliefs, norms, and related behaviors place its member in opposition to the broador culture"( ). Also in the film women of the Hispanic race are portrayed to drop out of school because in the Hispanic culture woman are expected to stay home, be homemaker and care for the children. Parents also are a factor in Hispanic culture that they question are motives to have an education. That men didn't like women that are smarter and of course independent. • 5. Stand And Deliver Reflection Stand and Deliver, is based in East Los Angeles High School that would not typically belong to high achieving math students. However, when Mr. Escalante starts working there, things begin to change. First off, he was supposed to teach computer science, but was told he was teaching math when he started actually working. When he first started teaching, he was faced with many obstacles. His first day in the classroom, there were more kids than there were desks. Even so, the students' first language also created a learning barrier. Mr. Escalante asked the students who spoke Spanish move to the front of the class, and students who spoke English were asked to move to the back. Throughout the basic course, and even up through his teaching of calculus, Mr. Escalante also had to combat the students' bad behavior. In the beginning of the movie, a student decided to try to act like a thug, and threatened Mr. Escalante if he did not run the class like he wanted, the teacher would face repercussions. Escalante as a teacher, I do not think his methods would work for all students at Swansboro High School. Personally, I would be fine with his teaching methods. I am so used to Mr. Walsh roasting me, I think I would be okay with Mr. Escalante's roasts. However, I think the rest of Swansboro is too fragile to handle Mr. Escalante's approaches on learning. Most people would be offended with his methods, complain to administration, and the ability to do his job would suffer. Swansboro High School's teaching staff has a unique dynamic and I do not think Mr. Escalante would fit into the way things are done. • 6. Stand And Deliver Essay Education is a vital medium of acquiring knowledge and skills. Education, however, can have different meanings to various people, but learning has to take place for it to be complete. It is an effort from the senior individuals to transfer the knowledge they have to other members of the society. Institutions play a significant role in integrating people with their community and maintain preservation of culture. Some of these issues have been well portrayed in the film Stand and Deliver. The story of Jaime Escalante, who is a high school teacher proves the benefits of education to all. He manages to inspire prone dropout students to study calculus and pass, making many to doubt leading to his student rewriting the exam. The movie as per its ... This norm should be changed in the lives of some teachers as they influence a lot in the society. Teachers inspire students, but in the movie, they have failed to do so except Escalante. If they instilled good morals, advised on the best lifestyle and helping students in their crisis. They would have increased the motivation of these students, but they are not doing so and even when Escalante try, they want to discourage him. Some individual in society have utterly failed to recognize the student's effort, and any good results these students brings is overlooked. They don't have faith with the students anymore which is something that has been clearly shown in this film. The Education Testing Service doubts the results pulled by the students in Garfield high school as they accuse the students of cheating and asking the students to retake the test. Mr. Escalante takes on the challenge of proving everyone wrong. He is an educator that fights and advocates for his students. Not only does he push his students to their fullest potential, but also he believes in them and shatters the stereotypical wall built around them. The emergence of the pachuco symbolizes a reflective suggestion to the presumed wonder days of the Chicano Movimiento and proposes an fictional and idealistic mediator of revolution and opposition. Culture Clash ties with the 1988 Ramon Menéndez film Stand and Deliver, also starring Olmos the true–life story of Garfield High School math teacher Jaime Escalante as this pachuco–Jamie Escalante "type" wants the young men to comprehend that they are faces of the similar identity and aspires them to turn out to be progressive examples of Mexican machismo. Culture Clash describes the alteration of Chicano biases in the mass media from a idealized person of opposition that obtains its rule from its rejection to participate with the ordinary to the character of the inspiring math teacher. By creating the contrast of the pachuco with the math teacher in this mode, Culture Clash entertainingly depicts the harsh roles on hand to Chicanos in mainstream mass media and mocks the great switch from one role to the next. Stand And Deliver Themes Stand and Deliver– Relevancy Today The film Stand and Deliver follows math teacher Jaime Escalante's determination to motivate underprivileged students and help them reach academic excellence. At the end of this whole journey, the students are able to realize their full potential and grow from the experience. There are several universal themes that the filmmaker is able to express through the use of various impactful filmmaking techniques. I believe that the film's passion is still relevant today, as the themes showcased throughout the film can very much be understood and empathized with by a diverse range of students in modern times. Many students claim that math is just not for them, that they do not understand it and are better off without it. The filmmaker specifically shows this through a scene in the beginning of the film when Escalante asks different students a simple question on a basic concept in math and given in return unsure answers. The filmmaker gives close up shots of the students looking down at their desks, seemingly unconfident in their own understanding of basic math. The students at first resist trying to take math seriously, but with time Escalante eventually succeeds at sparking their interest and showing them that they are capable of a lot more than they believe to be possible. Case Study : ' Stand And Deliver ' Title: Team Application Author: Team One Charles Brereton, David Wolff, David Walker, Garret Ryan, Conner Freeland Introduction/Objective: Each team member watched the movie, "Stand and Deliver" and completed the discussion questions in this week's team application, (Musca and Menendez, 1988). During our team discussion, we analyzed the leadership qualities of Escalante. The team discussed how Escalante could read his environment, knowing himself and how to effectively implement his application of leading. The author notes the importance of knowing yourself by identifying who you are and what you stand for, (Bennis, 2009). As a team, we discussed Escalante's ability to be flexible, by changing his approach to overcome a challenging situation. The team agreed that Escalante followed an authentic style of leading. The team noted that this method of instruction would probably not be an acceptable practice in most schools. The setting for which this movie was depicted was a lower level high school that was in the midst of losing their accreditation, (Musca and Menendez, 1988). The team discussed members of the faculty and their behavior towards their students. The faculty lacked the essential leadership qualities that are needed to properly motivate their students to become successful in obtaining a higher level of education. This movie directed by Ramón Menéndez dramatizes actual events into a movie with the idea of combating stereotypes enforced upon low income Latinos and presenting a success story with the use of different Latino characters with their own unique conflicts. • 14. Movie Review : Stand And Deliver Leadership Movie Review Stand and Deliver unfolds as a new professor takes over an apathetic yet vociferous math class in a disadvantaged part of town. His belief in the capabilities of the lowly– educated minority class, along with their hunger to learn, accomplished their shared vision of all 18 students passing the AP calculus exam at the end of their senior year. Mr. Escalante applied strategic techniques in teaching his class. Quickly earning respect, building relationships, and establishing clear goals, allowed him to bring the class to a level no one previously thought possible. Quickly earning respect Mr. Escalante used specific behaviors at first, providing rigid structure–he laid down the law at the beginning to demonstrate his high expectations and resolution to accomplish the end goal. He seemed to not care if any student just decided to be done. He gave them no opportunity to behave disrespectfully, by challenging each one right where they were. He led well at all levels: he taught with fervor and gusto, speaking individually to each student's unique needs, as well as conversing respectfully with parents, and providing his input to other teachers. He took a more laissez–faire attitude by simply giving the school board an ultimatum of quitting, should they not abide by his requests and methods. This proved useful in that environment. • 17. Movie Stand And Deliver As An Excellent Teacher I would rate Mr. Escalante as depicted in the movie Stand and Deliver as an excellent teacher! Ron Clark a renown and excellent teacher in his own right, states there are 11 characteristics that should be found in every teacher who is raising children who love to learn. These characteristics included enthusiasm, adventure, creativity, balance, compassionate, fun, common sense, appreciation, resilience and accountable. I observed every one of these characteristics in the character of Mr. Escalante in the movie Stand and Deliver. In the beginning of the movie, as Mr. Escalante began this experience, I do not believe he knew things were as bad as what he encountered on the first day of school. Classrooms with graffiti on the inside, insufficient chairs for the number of students assigned in the classroom, high school students attending school without school supplies, students vandalizing their school and defecating in the office, rigging the bell to completely disrupt the school day, even students inside the classroom without any desire to learn. I would not be intimidated by Mr. Escalante's techniques. I have the utmost respect for teachers who are willing to go outside the norm to teach children. Mr. Escalante believed that there was only one thing that was needed for the children to succeed, ganas. It was all he told the Principal he needed and all he asked for the students "You're going to work harder here than you've ever worked anywhere else. And the only thing ... The movie is a true story about a teacher who fought against all odd to help poor Latin students to pass the advance placement test in calculus. He motivates the students with everything that he could think of. The students received such a high test score that the testing center though they had cheated. The first leadership theory Jamie Escalante demonstrates is Leader–Member Exchange theory. Jamie is waking the hall, looking for his classroom. Jamie enters the classroom, he sees the students standing and talking, he sees girls sitting in boys lap. Jamie tells the student to take a seat. They act like they don't hear him talking. Jamie tell them again to take a seat, one girl makes a comment asking if the class can talk about sex. Jamie comment, "what one female student mentions could cost me my job.' The students stop talking and start looking at Jamie and wondering what he is talking about. The second leadership theory Jamie shows is Situational Approach, when Angel and Finger Man come late to class. Jamie has Finger Man to take the seat in the front of the class and Angel to stand in the back. Jamie asks Finger Man if he brought his tools to class. Finger Man tells Jamie that he uses his head. He uses an optimistic tone to convey four appeals. Throughout the whole speech, he establishes his credibility to a predominantly white audience to make his point stand out for the changes he believes are necessary. Booker T. Washington delivers the 1895 Atlanta Compromise Speech to a white and black audience about the equality blacks and whites deserve. As a black speaker in the north, Washington influences and impresses many of the northern citizens with his moving speech. Washington brought with him "...evidence of racial progress in the South". His audience contained the president and the board of directors as well as citizens. In the beginning, Washington uses vivid imagery through his ideas. He begins his speech with strong statistics, "One–third of the population of the South is of the Negro race. No enterprise seeking the material, civil, or moral welfare of this section can disregard this element of our population and reach the highest success," (Washington 1). Using logos in this speech shows his strong points to his audience revealing a realistic view of what is going on around them, and represent the kind of power the black population actually has. Washington also applies ethos in his opening statements by establishing his credibility and aspirations. "American Negro been more fittingly and generously recognized than by the managers of this magnificent Exposition at every stage of its progress. It is a recognition that will do more to cement the friendship of the two races than any occurrence since the dawn of our freedom," (Washington 1). He uses this to to express his aspirations for the long run and establish where he stands. Without this section, Washington may not have everyone's attention in the audience. • 29. House On Mango Street Compare And Contrast Essay According to talkproverty.org 21.4% of Hispanics in America are living in poverty. A book call The House on Mango Street and a movie call "Stand and Deliver," represent the struggle of being a Hispanic in America. The House on Mango Street is similar to the movie, Stand and Deliver because the characters were judged based on where they lives, the characters have low self esteem, and the females were expected to take care of family. The House on Mango Street is also different from the movie, "Stand and Deliver," because of the encouragement the characters received by adults, the relationships the characters build, and the different viewpoint the characters have on where they will be in the future. In my opinion, The House on Mango Street interests me more than "Stand and Deliver," because the book leaves you wondering what is going to happen next, allows you to imagine the characters, and it has different storylines. ... Movie Analysis : ' The Big Bucks ' As many aspire to earn careers that either make money or improve their social status, teachers are the few who instead of earning the big bucks, will settle to inspire the young, and mold the future. It is an educator's goal to promote the desire to learn as stated by Jaime Escalante in Stand and Deliver: "If you don 't have the ganas [or desire], I will give it to you because I 'm an expert." (Menéndez). Future teachers can learn from the film Stand and Deliver to appreciate the positive impact educators can have on students facing an adversary, such as life. The film proves as valid inspiration through the main character, Jaime Escalante's, realistic tools to his job such creating relationship with the students, challenging the class, and an authentic concern for the students' success. Teachers can earn their right to inspire by creating a relationship with the class. As Sara Quay and Quaglia Russell state "The more your students feel that they are part of the classroom community, the more likely they are to become connected to the course, the subject, and even the school." It is because of this that the Jaime Escalante was so successful with his class. The teacher is usually held accountable for the student ability or inability to learn, what most people don't consider is the fact that one of the largest factor in a student learning, is what is going on in their personal life. These figures are unfortunate because having multiple Latino roles in American films is beneficial in representing a diverse Latino community which avoids the portrayal of a single character as a token representative of an entire race. The movie Stand and Deliver was even added to the Library of Congress' National Film Registry which described it as "one of the most popular of a new wave of narrative feature films produced in the 1980s by Latino filmmakers." Therefore, the images that this movie conveys continues to hold a great importance in the representation of Latinos, particularly in the treatment of characters that could further promote stereotypes.
