Transgender is a relatively new term; it refers to a person that believes that their gender identity
doesn't correspond with his or her biological sex. Doctors diagnosis this uneasy feeling about one's
gender as Gender Dysphoria. Often time's he or she might undergo sex reassignment surgery to
physically become his or her desired gender. Like every other citizen in the United States,
transgenders are entitled to a series of rights. However, a transgender's "inconsistency in the
presentation between biological sex and gender expression is usually not tolerated by others"
(D'Augellia and Grossman).
Intolerance leads to gender discrimination and harassment. Transgenders are targeted because they
do not fulfill the societal norms or gender roles in a given community. In every culture, children
learn the behaviors associated with males and female through gender stereotypes. When someone
doesn't fit the standards for a given gender, he or she is deemed an outcaste. The idea of being
outcasted is not a recent concept. " One of the first recorded examples involved a servant in the
Virginia colony in the 1620s who claimed to be both a man and a woman" (Erickson–Schroth). The
servant went by two names Thomas and Thomasine Hall, and was facing persecution for being

of international, national and local policy debate on the subject of economic development. This

Emma Watson Speech On Gender Equality
Emma Watson is known as the actress that plays Hermione Granger in Harry Potter but on
September 20 2014 when she gave her speech for a new campaign HeForShe. Emma states "I was
appointed as Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women six months ago." Emma stated "I am reaching
out to you because we need your help. We want to end gender inequality and to do this we need
everyone involved." Emma Watson began her speech by asking for help from not only women like
most would assume on account of gender inequality generally being directed towards women but
instead she asked help from everyone. Once again Emma makes a clear statement by saying "We
want to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change." Emma
Watson is trying include men and boys to support the HeForShe campaign.
Emma said I decided "I was a feminist––and this seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent
research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word." With this statement Emma
shows her listeners that she is aware of the negativity that is now associated with being a feminist
but that she will still let it be known to the world that she is one. Emma Watson then declared "for
the record, feminism by definition is "the belief that men and women should have equal rights and
opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes." she was
explaining the true definition of feminism to those of the listeners that believe that feminism is
associated with man hating like when Emma said "and the more I have spoken about feminism the
more I have realized that fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man–
hating." Emma Watson described her personal experience of a common stereotypical incident when
she discloses that "I started questioning gender–based assumptions a long time ago, when I was
eight, I was confused at being called "bossy," because I wanted to direct the plays that we would put
on for our parents –– but the boys were not."

In society men are brought up to be strong leaders who are in control. According to social trends
Ireland, men in 2009 were most likely to be employed as managers or senior officials, while women
were most likely to be employed in administrative and secretarial work; 16% of women worked in
personal service occupations such as hairdressing, childcare and beauty. This is an example of social
construction of reality where the man has the power. Due to men having the same characterises as

Between 1923 and 1972, when the Equal Rights passed you would believe that Gender Equality
would end. It was passed in 35 states. General Equality has been going on for years. Everything
would make everything so much easier if it was Equal for both a men and a women. Where it's at
home, at work, or even at school. Why does one gender have to be better than another? ''Achieving
Gender equality in education means that boys and girls will have equal opportunities to realize their
full human rights and contribute to and benefit from economic, social, cultural, and political
development.'' Our generation can benefit so much. But it if they can benefit why is this only
happening in 35 states instead of all over the world. The biggest Gender Equality problem has to do
with education. A person's education shouldn't be determine because of their Gender. Both a man
and a women can have the same passion for education for wanting to be someone and go
somewhere in life. In Pakistan a women doesn't have the equal right to go to school and learn? This
isn't just happening in Pakistan, it's passing in many other places. Now why does this affect a

Hillary Clinton once said, "Human rights are women's rights, and women's rights are human rights.
Let us not forget among those rights are the right to speak freely – and the right to be heard."
Ignorance from men and women, both, are not making the chances of gender equality higher.
Gender equality is not women fighting men and bringing them down and neither is feminism, it's to
give both men and women equal amount of rights, freedom, and the ability to do what they want
without someone making a rude comment. The issue of men discouraging women is wrong and
should be addressed. Many, are still living in the past, and when they grew up women were only
house–wives that took care of the house and did the chores.
The world is changing and, and women are too, and so it's time for men to change the way they
think, and stop the inequalities between the 2 genders. In the Declaration of Independence, the
selection states, "We hold these truths to be self–evident, that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness." If all men are created equal, doesn't everyone have the right to paid equally,
be allowed to dress the way they want and not be judged, and be allowed to whatever they want,
with limits, without being judged? 89.4% of students at this school believe that gender equality
matter, and we need to change that to 100%. Gender Equality isn't just the fight for women and to
tell everyone that women are the best. It's so men, women, and transgender can get all the rights
they deserve in the free country of America.

I have come to realize that as much as people say that all humans are created equal, it is not often
that they are actually treated that way. My inspiration is derived from a desire to promote equality in
society, to live in a world where people don't find themselves at a disadvantage by default based on
their gender, skin color, or sexuality. Gender equality is one of the issues near to my heart because I
believe that young girls are the future of this nation. Yet in my opinion, the way that women are
treated here, in the most advanced country on the planet, is entirely unacceptable. We've come a
long way from the "women in the kitchen" ideals of the past, but still have so far to go. In the U.S.
today, the gender wage gap is twenty percent. This means that, on average, a woman will make only
eighty cents for every dollar earned by a man. What kind of example is this setting for children?
This teaches our daughters, and our sons as well, that a female and her efforts are worth 20 percent
less than that of a male, and that disturbs me deeply.
As a woman, these issues affect me directly. In a wide variety of circumstances, I've found myself
the subject of demeaning treatment from members of the opposite sex. I was twelve the first time I
was catcalled, a young girl barely aware of her own sexuality. Whether being catcalled by teenage
boys or being approached by middle aged men, it's a daily struggle against conditioning women
have developed to be skeptical of all men. This is not something that I or anyone else should have to
overcome. It shouldn't be dismissed as a compliment or a joke. The hypersexualization of women
and young girls affects them in unexplainable ways. It teaches little girls that their bodies are their
most valuable asset. I believe that the future is female, but what will that future look like if we
continue down this road?

everywhere. There was so much doubt expressed that a woman, Billie Jean King, could beat her
opponent, Bobby Riggs in a tennis match. Against all odds, Billie Jean King was crowned with the
victory. This legendary moment in history was important for the sport of tennis, but also the little
girls everywhere that were not allowed to participate in athletics like their male peers. In light of
"Title IX", an amendment that promoted equality and the prohibition of gender and race
discrimination in any school or Federal–funded sport or activity, Billie Jean King became the face of
feminism and gender equality, and can be accredited for her contributions to the advancements for
not just women athletes, but all women. Because of this victory, women athletes became more
accepted in society. Before this match, there was so much chatter about women being weak and
brittle and that they did not size up to their male counterpart. People argued that there was no way a
woman could beat a man in athletics. But after this victory was won, women athletics gained a new
kind of acceptance. Girls everywhere were more interested in playing sports and participating in
athletic activities. Before, little girls would get teased if they showed an interest in athletics, for
example, getting called a "tomboy." Now today, it is very common to see male and female teams for
sports in education programs and other recreational leagues. The change in how people viewed
women in sports is very clear, and have come a long way since that tennis match in 1973 and the
introduction of Title IX. It is now much more common to see teams for softball, tennis, and
basketball for girls. But this movement did not stop at sports, during this time, the feminist
movement was still an ongoing fight. Billie Jean King's victory was used as a tool to show that
women deserved equal opportunity in jobs, the home, and society in general. King supported that
women shouldn't have to fight for the same wages or job opportunities amongst their male

been great back in the 70s though after there has been little change and a gap averaging up to 25%
from then and now, which is a cause for concern.
The workforce before 1970 has had a gap of pay between the genders that is that of a significant
amount. It was until the early 1970s the gender pay gap in Australia was wide, and was kept that
way by 'institutionalized gender wage discrimination', as claimed by Paul Miller (1994, p.371). That
was until the equal pay decisions for women in 1969, 1972 and 1974 put an end to the
discrimination and closed the gap significantly (e.g., Gregory and Duncan, 1981; Borland, 1999),
but of course the gap remained. At the end of the 1990s it was looked at again from 1980s and 1990s
it was found that the pay gap ranged from about 8 percent to 25 percent (Borland, 1999, p. 267).

Title IX was passed by congress in 1972. When discussing Title IX, most people will refer to gender
equality in athletics and sports. Although this does apply to state funded athletics and sports, this is
only one of the ten areas that are addressed by the law. The following ten key areas fall under the
amendment: Access to higher education, athletics, career education, education for pregnant and
parenting students, employment, learning environment, math and science, sexual harassment,
standardized testing, and technology. The intent of the law is to allow for gender equality across the
board by prohibiting any discrimination on the basis of sex. Prior to the law being passed, women in
the 1970's were excluded from many opportunities. Colleges and universities set a quota for the
admission of women and access to scholarships. They needed earlier curfews, denied tenure, and
had more restrictive rules overall. The response to these concerns was the development of Title IX.
The law reads: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from
participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education
program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Federal funding does not have to be
monetary compensation. Examples include rent assistance, financial aid/loans, or federal training.

In America, we're still seen to be nurturers , but we can choose whoever we want to marry, if we
want kids, & how many we want. Unlike in third–world countries, we're able to get an education,
we can go to college, maybe even want to get married or not. In Iceland, it's better than third–world

given cars. Girls are supposed to be seen as sexy but fragile, while boys are supposed to be strong &
masculine. Girls & boys can play into these roles though. Girl will dress provocatively & show off

Gender Equality in Secondary Physical Education: A Critical Appraisal
Introduction
This essay will critically analyse gender equality in physical education teaching. There is evidence
to support that many girls and some boys are subject to gender inequalities in physical education
(Dowling, 2004). Most studies confirm girls are less involved and motivated to participate in
sporting and physical education activities (Gutierrez & Lopez, 2012). There is also international
research that shows how physical education teacher education courses often fail to construct equal
gender learning opportunities for their students (Brown & Rich, 2002; Wright, 2002). The physical
differences between males and females in adolescence influences the way in which physical
education is delivered (Vertinsky, 2012). Biological differences between boys and girls such as boys
being stronger, faster and more powerful from adolescence onwards should not be ignored in
secondary physical education, girls cannot be expected to compete against boys in activities which
require strength and power as this would place them at a disadvantage (Capel & Piotrowski, 2000).
Many researchers support the view that schools and sporting organisations breed gender inequalities.
Family environment teaches and forms gender roles in a home environment (Zaravigka & Pantazis,

The idea of being outcasted is not a recent concept.
