Target Intern Interview
June 2, 2015
We kicked off the internship in Nashville at 8:30am. I met my mentor and copious bosses. I will be partnering with the logistic team for the rest of my
internship. Today consisted of numerous meetings. The meetings included; meet and greets, breakfast/lunch, discussing our expectations and our
leaders expectations, briefing target policies/core roles, and learning the specific leadership roles we have to achieve and or maintain in order to
prepare for our final operation review. We have approximately ten weeks with Target aka a ten
–week interview. A couple of cool facts that I learned
about Target is it started in 1962! Target gives back four million dollars a week to charity and those in need. There are 49 states and 30 countries...

My opp would be continuing my education in ptming so I can help drive sales and reduce a–markdowns while maintaining a well–organized and
easy–to shop area for our guest during changes, such as back to school. As far as this year's internship and last years internship, I see changes made
from last years feedback. I think me transferring to the Chattanooga area has worked out well. Honestly I would tell anyone if they could go to a
different store for their advance internship do it! Each store is very unique and there are many things to learn and take away from each of them.
Since I am at a different store that has a different volume all while learning a new ETL role I feel like I will be more prepared to be an ETL since I
have now been at two different stores and different angles, I would suggest it to anyone! I also love the fact we are taking the time this year to do a
team building day as I think everyone can grow from it and take something away from it to go back to there store and apply. My mentor Peter is great
and I do not think I could brag on him

Target Research Paper
Introduction
I chose to write my paper on the company Target. I selected this company because I really like to shop in there stores. They have good variety of
different products and someone is always around to help you locate items when you can't find them (unlike Wal–Mart). Target might be a little more
pricier on some items compared to there competitors Wal–Mart and K–mart, but the atmosphere is a lot more toned and you can actually focus on
shopping without being over crowded.

Sales force behaviors not properly managed can cost a company a lot of money. So how does Target decide on what sales force method to use? Here
are some suggestions:
Target needs to observe their competitors (such as Wal–mart and K–mart) to see how they are prospering through difficult times. What are they doing
in terms of sales force compensation that they can copy? If Target is paying out entitled compensations to long time workers, they need to do away with
that. Target needs to stay within reasonable means with monetary compensations/incentives. How much coverage does Target need in certain
departments? They should schedule employees according to peak hours when business is steady.
Lower overhead. You can't have a lot of chiefs and no Indians. Target has too many in store leadership roles such as: Store team leader (general
manager) (Target, 2012) Executive team leader (assistant manager) (Target, 2012)
Facilities management – Keep the store looking great every day and promote a safe place to work and shop. (Target, 2012)
Assets protection and lost prevention – Help to maintain a safe, clean store and work to minimize theft and fraud. (Target, 2012)
Supervisory – Lead a Fast, Fun and Friendly team.

Company Profile and History Target Corporation is an upscale discounter providing high quality, on–trend merchandise at attractive prices in a clean,
spacious and guest friendly store. Target Corporation also operates their online business at Target.com . According to the company' history report
Target began as Marshall Field & Co in 1881 then in 1902 George Dayton opened a Goodfellows in downtown Minneapolis. One year later they
founded their first Dry Goods Store and in 1911 they became known as the Dayton Company. In 1962 they opened their first Target store selling

economic initiatives, and how well they are performing. Target's social programs vary from community to community but also are implemented from
a global perspective. Target's Objectives To accomplish the aforementioned vision statement, Target has come up with many different ways to fulfill
their goals. Target has been trying to delighting their customers for years. They are constantly looking for better prices to fulfill their credo of,
"Expect More. Pay Less." Target has incorporated three more designers into their merchandise line in the last few months, but at the low cost of what
customers expect. More food and grocery are being offered at Target stores annually. Target is not only looking on how to improve the merchandise for

One of the largest and most successful retailers in the United States is Target Corporation. There have been many micro–environmental factors that
have affected this company's performance over the past few years. The micro–environment are the actors close to the company that affect its ability to
serve its customers such as the company itself, suppliers, marketing intermediaries, customer markets, competitors and publics (Kotler and Armstrong,
p.66) The company itself definitely played role in affecting its performance over the past few years. Target wanted to be perceived as a discount retail
store but also carry top designer products (Kotler and Armstrong, p.94). The marketing plans for the company affected its sales negatively and... Show

The most important actor in a company's microenvironment is its customers and they have definitely affected the performance of Target's performance
over the past few years (Kotler and Armstrong, p.69). Target did not resonate with its customers like Wal
–Mart did, according to Kotler and Armstrong;
their well–cultivated "upscale discount" image was turning away customers who believed that its fashionable products and trendy advertisement meant
steeper prices. Because of this, the company had experienced three straight quarters of flat–same store sales growth and a small reduction in the amount
of shoppers they were receiving.
`While microenvironmental factors have played a huge part in Target's performance over the past few years, macroenvironmental factors have played a
role as well. Macroenvironment factors are the larger societal forces that affect the microenvironment such as demographic, economic, natural,
technological, political and cultural forces (Kotler and Armstrong, p 66). The only macroenvironmental factor that I believe has affected the company's
performance over the past few years is its economic environment. Economic factors can have a huge effect on consumer spending and buying behavior
and with our economy being so bad and the pricier image Target has, the company has definitely taken a hit

Target Industry Outlook
Industry Outlook Target's industry is the retail industry. The overall outlook for this industry is positive. According to Nielsen's Global Consumer
Confidence Trend Tracker, the industry is looked upon in a "cautiously optimistic" fashion, especially in North America. In 2013, the industry was
not doing very well (only 70% of retailers claimed to be as optimistic then as the 82% of retailers who feel that way now), but it has since recovered.
Holiday season accounts for a large percentage of retail sales, and retailers are expecting an average increase of 6% in sales this year compared to 2014
sales numbers. This increase is driven by the popularity of online discounts. Brick–and–mortar retailers are not expected to be as successful as... Show

profitability is worsening in different aspects. Over the past 3 years, Target has experienced a huge decline in Gross profit margin, net profit
margin, ROE, and ROA. Though, in comparison to the industry, Target Corp. would be considered to be very liquid. For example, Target's Gross
Margin Present Ratio is 4.90 more liquid than the industry. I feel that Target Corp. has what it takes to be profitable in the industry because they are
leading the competitors. Financial Risk Although Target also has interest coverage ratio information for 2015, the latest year that coverage ratios are
available for the whole industry is 2014. Target's coverage ratio in 2014 was 3.7, while the industry average in 2014 was 9.5. This means that Target
has been paying its debts much faster than its competitors have which makes it a company without much risk in its industry. Although that number has
risen in the most recent year, it appears to be well below industry average, so Target is still a financially secure company. Asset Management The asset
management ratio we choose to discuss it the total asset turnover ratio. As of January 31, 2015 Targets total asset turnover ratio is 1.69 while their

Ads and commercials are on everything from the billboards you see going down the highway to the ads you hear on the radio or TV. Every

Target is trying to make it easier on them by putting everything in one store. Men and women shop in very different ways. Men are more likely to
make a list and stick to and try to get in and out of class as fast as possible. Women, however, are more likely to browse the aisles and look at
everything that's in the store rather than just what they need for themselves or the house at that moment (Wells). Target shows the variety of items in
their stores to help show the women in their store that different items that they could find while browsing the store. By showing the different
products, it helps make the women want to go there because they can get away from the busyness of life by spending times wondering the isles of

Women make up over two–thirds of the grocery shoppers (Goodman). Of course, not all of these women are staying at home mom's or spouses so
they need to get their shopping done so that they can get back to the other parts of their lives. The same way that Target is trying to appeal to women
who like to browse when they shop, they are appealing to those who need to get their shopping done in one quick stop. When showing all the grocery

Segmentation and Target Marketing
Segmentation and Target Marketing Andrew Swanson MKT/571 December 21, 2015 Steven Kraus Segmentation and Target Market Paper
"Marketing segmentation and targeting are particularly important for finding customers that are the best match for a business's products and
services" (Suttle, 2014, В¶ 2) This statement speaks directly to the ideal scenario every company hopes to find; one where it's strengths as a product
and service provider are best matched with the client and consumer base most in need of these outputs. When reviewing soft drinks giant Coca Cola,

In contrast to this agreed–upon avoidance of a specific demographic, is Coca–Cola's dominance in the world of large institutions, colleges/universities,
businesses, or sports franchises, "Currently, the Coca–Cola Company dominates this channel, accounting for approximately 70% of all fountain
beverage sales." (Change Lab Solutions, n.d.) Psychographic Segmentation According to Kotler and Keller (2012) Psychographic segmentation
divides buyers into different groups based on psychological and personality traits, lifestyle, or values. The four groups with the highest resources are
innovators, thinkers, achievers, and experiencers. The four groups with the lower resources are believers, strivers, makers, and survivors (Kotler &
Keller, 2012). Given Coca–Cola's long and storied history, individuals comprising the believers and survivors groups are exceptionally strong
psychological groups for the company given the historical strength and customer loyalty these consumers have with the company. Somewhat in
contrast, consumers fitting into the higher resource groups like innovators and high achievers are much more likely to be attracted niche alternatives.
Coca–Cola has made several brand changes to better position the company in these higher–priced markets, which plays well to experiencers willing to

As one of the current leading retailers in the US, the Target Corporation has made a path to easily get back to the majority of their customers' demands

company has maintained it's effectiveness by making shipment and transportation costs better in order to gain an upper hand on operations, allowing
them to have more value to its transport networks. These are some of the active outcomes that Target has managed to grow and continue to watch over
as well as evaluate. Target holds and sees every opportunity to bring and add value to their business value chain, the company is not only able to

Segmentation and Target Market The three major players in the soft drink market are PepsiCo, Inc., the Coca–Cola Company, and the Dr. Pepper

requires that marketers, segment the market, by identifying and profiling to find a distinct group of buyers who differ in their wants and needs (Kotler

Snacking is a national pastime, so the snack foods: pretzels, chips, multi–grain snacks, granola bars, cookies cereal, rice sides, eat–and–heat foods,

Behavioral Segmentation
Behavioral segmentation divides buyers into groups based on their knowledge, attitude towards, use of, or response to a product (Kotler & Keller,
2012). When it comes to needs and benefits, you would primarily see health conscious individuals or parents buying for their families; water, healthy
oatmeal, juices, maybe diet soda, multi–grain snacks, and Quaker granola bars. In the decision role, we have the initiator, influencer, decider, buyer,
and user (Kotler & Keller, 2012). In most families everyone has a thought or opinion; however, in the end the buyer who does the grocery shopping
makes the final decision. All of the products in the PepsiCo beverage and food line are for all occasions, a user would be any consumer wishing to make
a purchase, and the usage rate would vary as much as the type of food or beverage would vary. Loyalty status is a place where with the right

Problem In order to stay competitive in times of economic troubles, Target heavily invested in store brands which now account for 20% of Target's

Accordingly, a store's image is affected by store brands and loyalty to a store is increased by a store brands' quality (Kremer & Viot, 2012). In addition,
stores must maintain a positive store image in consumers' minds in order to decrease the perceived risks of store brands (Delgado–Ballester,
Hernandez–Espallardo, & Rodriguez–Orejuela, 2014). In order to increase image and loyalty among consumers and elevate the opinion of its store
brands, Target could expand its offerings by adding a line of green products (Kotler & Armstrong, 2014, p. 264). Florence Kremer and Catherine Viot
determined, "when consumers notice that store brands are committed to respecting the environment or satisfying their needs, the retailer's image is
improved" (Kremer & Viot, 2012). Green, natural, ecological, ethical, fairtrade, and organic sums up the growing trend in products such as household
cleaners, personal care products, baby products and even pet products. In the last few years and continuing at a growing pace, green products are
outperforming conventional products (James, 2014). Although target has the Archer Farms and Simply Balanced store brands offering higher,

Target has been a successful retail company coming in 2nd place behind Wal

opportunities and threats. Additionally, the authors examine how the company functions to provide product to customers, and also elaborates on how
the company interacts with their customers. Lastly, the authors evaluate the needs that Target serves its customers and assesses the criticality of the

Company located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The next year he took on a larger role and the company was renamed Dayton Dry Goods Company
(Target Through The Years, 2016). In 1954, the company began its first expansion outside of Minneapolis, MN to Rochester, MN. Later, the company
began to look for way to strengthen its relationships with their 'guests' and introduced a mass–market discount store for shoppers looking for value. In
1962, this concept was called Target and made its first opening in Roseville, MN. The Dayton Corporation joined forces with J.L Hudson Company of
Detroit in 1969 (having similar merchandising philosophies) to become one of the 15 largest non–food retailers. The company continued to expand its
operations throughout the 70's, 80's, and 90's while creating superstores. They later acquired Marshall Fields, created their own brands (Archer Farms),
offered their own line of credit,

Target Reflective Essay
I started working at Target at the age of 18 and was there for four and a half years. During that time I was able to promote to two different positions.
At this company in order it promote to one of the six, store management positions you need to have obtained a Bachelor's Degree or higher. Since I
did not have that I could not promote any further. Since having a degree was the rule to be in store management, Target as a whole company would
have a booth at many career fairs around the United States geared toward new college graduates. Now, coming out of college, many of these people
have never had any type of work experience or if they did it was definitely not in retail. When we would get managers in training it was always hard for

My first impression of her was that she was very helpful and always was asking how we were doing and if we needed anything to just asked. I also
didn't mind that she would ask me questions about things she wasn't sure of and that didn't bother me because she was new and I had been
working there for a few years. Needless to say, first impressions are not always right. Once her probationary period was over, things definitely
changed. As a manager you were assigned certain areas of the store and she was in charge of the front end, which includes the registers, returns, the
cafГ©, and Starbucks. She is given duties of things that need to be accomplished months ahead of the due date. She was always wait until the last
minute to do them, she would never do them, she would make the employees and managers under her do them and she would take the credit on a job
well done, and when it was not a job well done the employee would take the blame. Many employees had gone to her in confidence with their issues
and concerns and she never would maintain confidentiality with those concerns. She had only lasted less than a year with the company and moved on

Target Intern Interview

  • 1. Target Intern Interview June 2, 2015 We kicked off the internship in Nashville at 8:30am. I met my mentor and copious bosses. I will be partnering with the logistic team for the rest of my internship. Today consisted of numerous meetings. The meetings included; meet and greets, breakfast/lunch, discussing our expectations and our leaders expectations, briefing target policies/core roles, and learning the specific leadership roles we have to achieve and or maintain in order to prepare for our final operation review. We have approximately ten weeks with Target aka a ten –week interview. A couple of cool facts that I learned about Target is it started in 1962! Target gives back four million dollars a week to charity and those in need. There are 49 states and 30 countries... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My opp would be continuing my education in ptming so I can help drive sales and reduce a–markdowns while maintaining a well–organized and easy–to shop area for our guest during changes, such as back to school. As far as this year's internship and last years internship, I see changes made from last years feedback. I think me transferring to the Chattanooga area has worked out well. Honestly I would tell anyone if they could go to a different store for their advance internship do it! Each store is very unique and there are many things to learn and take away from each of them. Since I am at a different store that has a different volume all while learning a new ETL role I feel like I will be more prepared to be an ETL since I have now been at two different stores and different angles, I would suggest it to anyone! I also love the fact we are taking the time this year to do a team building day as I think everyone can grow from it and take something away from it to go back to there store and apply. • 2. Target Research Paper Introduction I chose to write my paper on the company Target. I selected this company because I really like to shop in there stores. They have good variety of different products and someone is always around to help you locate items when you can't find them (unlike Wal–Mart). Target might be a little more pricier on some items compared to there competitors Wal–Mart and K–mart, but the atmosphere is a lot more toned and you can actually focus on shopping without being over crowded. Targets first symbol 1962 In order to motivate the sales force to produce the highest number of clients, describe six (6) features of an effective total rewards program Compensation – what is the company willing to pay for this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sales force behaviors not properly managed can cost a company a lot of money. So how does Target decide on what sales force method to use? Here are some suggestions: Target needs to observe their competitors (such as Wal–mart and K–mart) to see how they are prospering through difficult times. What are they doing in terms of sales force compensation that they can copy? If Target is paying out entitled compensations to long time workers, they need to do away with that. Target needs to stay within reasonable means with monetary compensations/incentives. How much coverage does Target need in certain departments? They should schedule employees according to peak hours when business is steady. Lower overhead. You can't have a lot of chiefs and no Indians. Target has too many in store leadership roles such as: Store team leader (general manager) (Target, 2012) Executive team leader (assistant manager) (Target, 2012) Facilities management – Keep the store looking great every day and promote a safe place to work and shop. • 4. Target One of the largest and most successful retailers in the United States is Target Corporation. There have been many micro–environmental factors that have affected this company's performance over the past few years. The micro–environment are the actors close to the company that affect its ability to serve its customers such as the company itself, suppliers, marketing intermediaries, customer markets, competitors and publics (Kotler and Armstrong, p.66) The company itself definitely played role in affecting its performance over the past few years. Target wanted to be perceived as a discount retail store but also carry top designer products (Kotler and Armstrong, p.94). The marketing plans for the company affected its sales negatively and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most important actor in a company's microenvironment is its customers and they have definitely affected the performance of Target's performance over the past few years (Kotler and Armstrong, p.69). Target did not resonate with its customers like Wal –Mart did, according to Kotler and Armstrong; their well–cultivated "upscale discount" image was turning away customers who believed that its fashionable products and trendy advertisement meant steeper prices. Because of this, the company had experienced three straight quarters of flat–same store sales growth and a small reduction in the amount of shoppers they were receiving. `While microenvironmental factors have played a huge part in Target's performance over the past few years, macroenvironmental factors have played a role as well. Macroenvironment factors are the larger societal forces that affect the microenvironment such as demographic, economic, natural, technological, political and cultural forces (Kotler and Armstrong, p 66). The only macroenvironmental factor that I believe has affected the company's performance over the past few years is its economic environment. Economic factors can have a huge effect on consumer spending and buying behavior and with our economy being so bad and the pricier image Target has, the company has definitely taken a hit ... According to Nielsen's Global Consumer Confidence Trend Tracker, the industry is looked upon in a "cautiously optimistic" fashion, especially in North America. In 2013, the industry was not doing very well (only 70% of retailers claimed to be as optimistic then as the 82% of retailers who feel that way now), but it has since recovered. Holiday season accounts for a large percentage of retail sales, and retailers are expecting an average increase of 6% in sales this year compared to 2014 sales numbers. This increase is driven by the popularity of online discounts. Brick–and–mortar retailers are not expected to be as successful as... Over the past 3 years, Target has experienced a huge decline in Gross profit margin, net profit margin, ROE, and ROA. Though, in comparison to the industry, Target Corp. would be considered to be very liquid. For example, Target's Gross Margin Present Ratio is 4.90 more liquid than the industry. I feel that Target Corp. has what it takes to be profitable in the industry because they are leading the competitors. Financial Risk Although Target also has interest coverage ratio information for 2015, the latest year that coverage ratios are available for the whole industry is 2014. Target's coverage ratio in 2014 was 3.7, while the industry average in 2014 was 9.5. This means that Target has been paying its debts much faster than its competitors have which makes it a company without much risk in its industry. Although that number has risen in the most recent year, it appears to be well below industry average, so Target is still a financially secure company.
