Comparison Of Malcolm X
On the other hand, Malcolm X had a different approach in providing African Americans equality.
Malcolm X believed anything must be done to provide equality for African Americans. For
Malcolm, anything would also be violence, unlike Dr. King who favored on non–violence ways to
achieve equality. During 1950's and early 1960's Malcolm became a speaker for the Nation of Islam.
Malcolm created newspapers and organized several temples to get his message out. For Malcolm,
whites were devils because they oppressed blacks. Malcolm was one of the leaders that motivated
racial dignity, black power, and economic opportunities for blacks. As the lines in PBS states
"Brothers and sisters, the white man has brainwashed us black people to fasten our gaze on a blond–
haired, blue–eyed Jesus! We're worshipping a Jesus that doesn't even look like us! ... The white man
has taught us to shout and sing and pray until we die..." it explains that Christianity is not a religion
that Black people can follow. He felt that Christianity is a religion followed by Whites and we as
African Americans cannot follow this religion. Also, Malcolm believed that nonviolence was a
realistic concept as he states, "I don't favor violence. If we could bring about recognition and respect
of our people by peaceful means, well and good. Everybody would like to reach his objectives
peacefully. But I'm also a realist. The only people in this country who are asked to be nonviolent are
black people" (PBS). In other words for him being violent is not needed but has become necessary.
In these lines Malcolm believes that Whites are not peaceful and they continue to be violent and as a
result African Americans are asked to be nonviolent.
Like, Martin Luther King. Malcolm X delivered a speech known as "Message to the Grassroots" on
November 10th 1963 in Detroit. This speech clearly reflects the differences in viewpoints that these
two men carried and how they believed in different ways of bringing equality for blacks. Malcolm
believed that there could not be a revolution without violence because that is the only way whites
would understand. As stated by Malcolm X, in his speech, "To understand this, you have to go back
to what [the] young brother here referred to as

Malcolm X
Malcolm X was a man of strong words and beliefs. Some say that he was a man of hate and
violence. Some also say that he was a smart man of hope and peace. Malcolm X's influence on
people was felt more than it was alive rather than dead. Malcolm X was a major contributor to the
black societies across the world. He fought for what he believed in and educated the young. Though
his early life was full of up's and downs he managed to, what some would say, "turn his life around".
In doing this he managed to gain the upper hand of the African American culture by giving them the
hope that one day they would if not own be apart of, what he called, "white mans society".

Malcolm s' death is a silence that is a loud sound to the world. Nobody really understood what he
was fighting for until he was shot down in the Audubon Ball room. People of the opposite race
weren't trying to hear what Malcolm had to say about anything.
Malcolm X had a persuasive way with words. He had a voice that influenced people to listen at
what he had to say. Malcolm X's voice changed the Nation of Islam from Six hundred people in
1952 to about 30,000 in 1963. (Headrick) The only way he knew to get his point across to the white
society was to encourage violence amongst the black community. This was the only way to make
the white society see the black people as equals in their society. When Malcolm X was interviewed
about the murder of John F. Kennedy, he replied that" it was a case of chickens coming home to
roost". (Malcolm X) Even Elijah Muhammad was embarrassed by his remarks so he told Malcolm
to shut his mouth for a while. (Encyclopedia Britannica)
People often misunderstood what Malcolm X stood for. This was because of the racial differences
that were going on at that time. Also because of the way he talked about people and the way he
presented himself. It didn't help that all this was going on in the 1960's were racism was in his
prime. After the death of Malcolm X people of all races started to see the vision that he had in mind
for his people. He left an impression on this world to stick

Malcolm X Continuity
Lee and Haley's last defect in presenting the autobiography of Malcolm X is their presentation of his
views after his trip to Mecca and before his death. In order to understand this misrepresentation the
context surrounding Malcolm's life is important. In April of 1964 Malcolm made a trip to Mecca
and then Africa, UK, and France. On this trip, Malcolm's views towards black rights continue to
morph. Upon returning to the United States, Malcolm continues to give speeches presenting his
somewhat altered visions. Also upon his return, Malcolm begins to receive death threats from
members of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm is then assassinated on February 19, 1965. In the last
thirty minutes of the film, Malcolm gives a speech based on a real speech ... Show more content on

Malcolm's beliefs appear to make a very small shift from the beginning of his popularity to the end
of his life. However, this does not mean that the changes that Malcolm does make do not hold
significance, but it is important to emphasize the continuity in Malcolm's philosophy despite these
transformations. Next, interestingly, Manning Marable argues that Malcolm's philosophies stem
from his childhood and remain almost completely consistent through his entire life. " But what I
find in my own research is greater continuity than discontinuity. What I see in Malcolm is that his
father Earl Little and Louise Little were committed Garveyites, advocates of black nationalism and
Pan–Africanism in Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association, joined in the 19–teens and
'20s; that Earl Little was the leader of the UNIA chapter branch in Omaha, Nebraska, then in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in East Chicago, Indiana, and then finally in Lansing – in Detroit, Michigan;
that there was a long legacy and a foundation of Malcolm's evolving politics". It is difficult to
confirm the continuity of Malcolm's beliefs before his speeches, interviews, and conversation were
recorded and presented towards the public. However, the autobiography and Malcolm's family
members confirmed the idea that Malcolm was exposed to black nationalist politics early in his life
by his mother and father. Despite the unknown about Malcolm's beliefs during his upbringing and
young adulthood, Lee paints a much more straightforward picture than reality. Lee presenting
Malcolm in this fashion allows him to shatter the myth about Malcolm typically held outside of
black communities. Presenting him as having the potential of becoming an integrationist easily
dismantles the idea that Malcolm was anti–white. However, his actual position towards the struggles
of African Americans in the

Malcolm X
We all know Malcolm X as one of the most famous human rights activist, but how did he get that far
and become famous? Malcolm X was born as Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha,
Nebraska. Malcolm was the fourth of eight children born to Louise and Earl Little. Due to Earl
Little's civil rights activism, the family was subjected to a lot of harassment from white supremacist
groups including the KKK. A fact about Malcolm X was he had his first encounter with racism
before he was even born.
With all the racism encounters the family had, Earl Little moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1926
and then to Lansing, Michigan in 1928. The racism was still following them and they then watched
their Lansing, Michigan home burn to the ground. Earl Little then moved the family to East Lansing
where he built a new home. Two years later, in 1931, his body was found and Malcolm's mother did
not recover from his death and then was put into a mental institution in 1937. Malcolm and his
siblings were separated and placed in foster homes.
In 1938, Malcolm X attended Mason High School where he was one of the only black students. He
excelled academically and was well liked by his classmates, who elected him class president. A
turning point came in 1939, where Malcolm's teacher asked him what he wanted to be when he
grew up and he replied with lawyer. His teacher responded, " One of life's first needs is for us to be
realistic ... you need to think of something you can be ... why don't you plan on

Shortly after this Malcolm was silenced for 90 days due to one of his comments about president
Kennedy's assassination, he said "Kennedy never foresaw that the chickens would come home to
roost so soon". Elijah Muhammad silenced Malcolm for 90 days but Malcolm suspected he was
silenced for other reasons. After he was silenced and the relations he had found out about and the
thought that the Nation of Islam was built on mostly lies, Malcolm terminated his member ship with
the Nation of Islam and sought to create his own religious organization called the Muslim Mosque.
On what can be considered a new awakening Malcolm went on a trip, he traveled to Saudi Arabia.
While he was there he shared his beliefs with constituents of other religions. Malcolm wrote
regarding his travels that he had finally gotten to meet people, Davis 4 blond hair blue eyed people,
that he could call his brothers. After befriending and ministering to boxer Cassius Clay, the boxer
decides to convert to the Muslim religion and join the Nation of Islam. In February 1964, Clay
announces he has changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Also it was during the time immediately
after his return that the attempts on Malcolm's life became more and more prominent. He was
subjected to a house fire burning the home himself, Betty, and his children. The attempt on his life
was unsuccessful. One week later, however, Malcolm's enemies

Achievements Of Malcolm X
Malcolm X, originally known as Malcolm Little, was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska.
Malcolm X fought for freedom and achieved his goals using charism and force. Malcolm Little
changed his name to "Malcolm X because his last name was an ancestral slave name so he replaced
it with X" to symbolize that his true African name had been lost. In his youth he got involved in
crime such as burglary and theft and was imprisoned and sentenced to ten years in jail but only
served seven cause of parole. While in there he studied the islamic religion. The organization of
Afro–American Unit (OAAU) was a Pan Africanist organization which was founded by him in April
1964 this organization fought for unity this group was organized during his visit to Africa. X's
greatest achievement or contribution was his articulate thoughts. He was incredibly intelligent and
helped gain national and international visibility and interest for the Civil Rights Movement.
(Biography)
Malcolm's goal was to "boast the black community" because they were important . He fought for
equality, freedom from oppression and independence of racist governments. Malcolm X's goals was
to improve the lives of African Americans. He believed that the path to progress and equality was
defined by self–definition and self–reliance for African Americans. He nonetheless presented
himself not as a soldier in arms but as an unyielding person of convictions, self–esteem and
intelligence who spoke out. X

Symbols In Malcolm X
Symbols are shown throughout the film representing Malcolm's transformation. "Symbols are
words, gestures, pictures or objects that carry a particular meaning which is only recognized by
those who share the culture. The words in a language or jargon belong to this category, as do dress,
hairstyles, Coca–Cola, flags and status symbols" (Hofstede, 1997). Initially, the zoot suit that
Malcolm wears indicates that he is involved in a hustler lifestyle. Once Malcolm is released from
prison, the audience can see the transformation he underwent. First in the way he speaks. He
transitions from saying "nigga" to "Negro" to show his commitment to learning the power of
language and understanding the meaning behind each word. Also shown by Malcolm reading and ...

The suitcase, representing the sacrifice Malcolm makes for the for the Nation of Islam. Most
importantly, the audience witnesses a change in name. Malcolm's name initially is Malcolm Little.
Later on, Malcolm changes his name to Malcolm X. During the times of slavery, slaves took on
their master's name to indicate they were property. Slaves never knew their names. In order to rid
himself of that burden, Malcolm changed his last name to "X". This is due to X signifying the
unknown in mathematics. In the same way that Malcolm did not know his origins. An important
symbol to note is the similarities between the house burning of Malcolm's childhood home and the
home he lived in with his family. Both scenes begin in the same manner, the waking up of wife and
collecting the children. Both scenes also end in similar ways with Malcolm and his father holding a
gun. Symbolizing the similarities between Malcolm and his father. Surprisingly, it was not until later
in Malcolm's life that his views and values aligned with his fathers. Initially, Malcolm believed that

The Autobiography Of Malcolm X
Do something about it. Everyone has problems from struggles in life. Malcolm X told his life story
of how he overcame in his autobiography simply called The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to
Alex Haley. His life changed the world historically, socially, and especially politically by taking a
stand against racism of all kinds which still exists in today's "modern" standards. Using his personal
life experience with racism towards African–Americans, Malcolm spreads the word on equality for
all with a realistic tone that inspires trust in him. Malcolm X reaches all kinds of people in an effort
to voice his thoughts on equality for all using rhetorical and persuasive techniques for a more
effective message. From the beginning, the story Malcolm X tells uses a tone of realism and
relatability to establish a dominant impression upon the reader's mind. An example of this tone is
when Malcolm, at a young age, accepts his ultimate fate that had just befallen his father. Malcolm
tells Alex that "It has always been my belief that I, too, will die by violence. I have done all that I
can to be prepared" (4). The definitiveness he says this with is not an attempt at making readers feel
empathy for him, but to appeal to logic by presenting this as a fact of the kind of world he lives in.
When Malcolm chooses to state "die by violence" (4) instead of describing what kind of violence or
with more emotion, he gets the reader past the emotional aspect of his belief with this stolid diction

Malcolm X's life and legacy. Since his early life, Malcolm had encountered racism and death to
African– Americans. Malcolm X born as Malcolm Little, grew up to become a leader and a hero for

intentions were to exhort African–Americans to cast off the chains of racism. In the 1960s, the Civil

Furthermore, In the 1960s, America was rebuilding the economy from a great depression and
reestablishing the country's society wealth status. Some Politician candidates used America's issues
to build a strong campaign to run for the presidency. Political leaders like JFK and BLJ were leaders
that wanted to make a positive change in America's society through jobs, education and policy
making to regain the trust of society. The problem with these policies and the positive change is that
America was divided by Civil Rights issues and racism. Some southerner's States were not
supporting the Civil Rights for African–Americans. In the 1960s, it was a tough year for African–
Americans to advocate their rights. Malcolm X did not have any problem promoting and shared his
thoughts about the injustice treatments toward African–Americans. Hence, how did America's

"If you are not willing to pay the price for freedom, you don't deserve freedom." –– Malcolm X
Malcolm Little ( known as Malcolm X) was born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska. Malcolm
Little was the fourth born child out of eight children. Malcolm's mother's name was Louise Little
who worked as a homemaker. Louise was a wife to Earl Little (Malcolm Little's father) who was an
active preacher and a proud supporter of a black nationalist named Marcus Gravy. Earl Little was so
intrigued by Marcus Gravy's work, power, and stance, that Earl himself became a member of the
Universal Negro Improvement Association. Because of Earl's frequent and lively activism and
involvement with the liberation of african americans in America, his family was often exposed to
harsh prejudices and racisms – even to the extent of the Little family being exposed to harassments,
threats, and targets from the Klu Klux Klan on several occasions. When the Klu Klux Klan had
vandalized the families household on different days, Earl Little had decided to take the "flight"
option on several different occasions. Earl and his family had moved from their households in;
Omaha, Milwaukee, and Wisconsin, until they finally settled down in a quiet area in East Lansing,
Michigan in 1929. The family had built a new home after their other homes were vandalized, or

The Influence Of Malcolm X
Throughout history, different people in society have viewed Malcolm X in different lights. To some,
Malcolm X is the shining light that spoke to a population that was in need of wisdom and help.
However, other people saw Malcolm X as an threat to society and the pillars that were built to keep
everybody safe. In the end, a person would have to be blind if they didn't recognize the impact of
Malcolm X character in the Civil Rights Era. Whether you saw him as a positive of the negative
aspect, Malcolm X was a powerful figure of the era. Therefore, we most praise the power and
strength of a Malcolm X figure in society. Malcolm X displayed the moral authority so great that it
continues to attract people to his ideology in recent times. Malcolm displayed a charismatic quality:
he fixed his mind and sight of the racial goals to be obtained and pursued them with an unvarying,
uncompromising attitude. In the light of all of these realities and difficulties of the cinema
representing a mans life that has been plagued with myths and romance, Spike Lee's Malcolm X
serves as a inspirational achievement. Lee's Malcolm X serve as a richly textured and relevant
nuance of the life and legacy of Malcolm X and the times of American paradox: a racist whose fame
has been shaped to display his belated universal appeal.

No man in our time aroused fear and hatred in the white man as did Malcolm, because in him the
white man sense an implacable foe who could not be had for any price–a man unreservedly
committed to the cause of liberating the black man in American society rather than integrating the
black man into that society. (Haley XXV)

Malcolm was not a black supremacist and was not racist towards whites. In his speech "The Ballot
or the Bullet" given on April 3, 1964 in Cleveland, OH, Malcolm explained, "Now in speaking like
this, it doesn't mean that we're anti–white, but it does mean we're anti–exploitation, we're anti–
degradation, we're anti–oppression. And if the white man doesn't want us to be anti–him, let him
stop oppressing and exploiting and degrading us."
Why would anyone feel comfortable living in a society integrated with the people who instilled in
them the belief that they were subpar and actually taught them to hate themselves?
Hardships can pull people apart, but Malcolm found that common factor that unified people to come
together. He made them realize that they all came from the same place and had the same struggles,
and that is what brought them together. The only thing that all blacks in America had in common
was the fact that none of their black ancestors originated in the United States. They had all been

Inaccuracies In Malcolm X
Malcolm X's significance is still existent till this day. He might have not been able to fully address
his final ideology to the world, but he was able to show people the real meaning of being a human.
He was capable of convincing people of his beliefs regardless of their accuracy using his great
charisma and leadership skills. Adding to that, when he found out that most of his beliefs were
imprecise he did not hesitate to let his followers know about it, ignoring the danger he was getting
into by confessing. Malcolm X set a very good life example of the human mind and soul
development through the course of his life. The film displayed a very accurate portrayal, yet there
was some minor inaccuracies that were not very debatable. The film's basic plot was about a black
child, Malcolm X, who was taken away from his mother after the murder of his father to move in
with a foster family. He grew up in the "white" society where he was treated differently and as an
outlier. As a junior–high student Malcolm was advised by his teacher to consider future jobs that
were realistic for black people when he told him about his passion for law. This caused him to feel
disheartened and drop out of school a few years later. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, there were some insignificant inaccuracies in the film. For instance, when Malcolm
was first captured by the policemen, he was not at his house trying to wash his hair as seen in the
movie, but was actually detained while picking up one of his stolen watches from a repair shop.
Besides, Malcolm did not convert to Islam because of John Bembry only, but because of his brother
(Wikipedia, 2015). Likewise, he was not made aware of Elijah Mohamed's deeds by his wife
initially but by Elijah Mohamed's son (YouTube, 2015). These were the most apparent imprecisions,
however they are not so important for they did not fictionalize the real life of Malcolm in anyway

Malcolm X Fire
"The most powerful weapon on Earth is the human soul on fire"–Ferdinand Foch. The song "We
Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel alludes to many historical events that occurred in the years
between 1949 and 1989. In the 1960s, Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, was a black nationalist who
opposed the joining of whites and blacks as equals ("Malcolm X"). It could be argued that the "fire"
that consumed Malcolm X was his hunger to fight for better conditions for blacks. This fire was lit
by his negative experiences with white people and the time he served in prison.
From early childhood, Caucasian people played a negative role in Malcolm X's life. Malcolm Little
was born on May 19, 1925 in Nebraska. His father, Earl Little, was a firm believer in African–
American repatriation, following the ideals of nationalist leader Marcus Garvey ("Biography").
Little was a vocal civil rights activist, which made him and his family apparent targets for white
supremacist groups. According to Malcolm X's autobiography, while Malcolm's mother was
pregnant with him, a group of Ku Klux Klan members rode horseback to their house, demanding his
father. His mother said that he was away preaching in Milwaukee, and the Klansmen smashed all of

The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley was published in 1965. It is national best seller
about the life and times of Malcolm X. On May 19, 1925 Malcolm Little was born in Omaha,
Nebraska. His father was a preacher who spoke out about the unity of black people. This caused
several white racists to strike out against Malcolm's father and his family violently. His family
moved to Lansing, Michigan where Malcolm, his parents, brothers, and sisters were shot at, burned
out of their home, harassed, and threatened. When Malcolm was 6 years old, his father was
murdered by a white man. After his father's death his mother had a nervous breakdown and the
family got split up by welfare agencies. Malcolm was placed in a lot of different schools ... Show

He saw that in the Muslim world the white man is brotherly. He met with, talked to, and ate with
people who in America were considered white. He now wanted to unite people of all races under the
power of one God and believed that blacks all over the world should join to combat racism.
Malcolm returned from the pilgrimage as El–Hajj Malik al–Shabazz. His pilgrimage broadened his
outlook on life. During his visit in the Holy Land he saw all races, all colors in true brotherhood
living in unity, living as one, and worshipping as one. He was questioned about this because in the
past he had preached out that whites were the devil and now he said that he will never be guilty of
that again. His friends are now black, brown, red, yellow, and white, which includes capitalists,
socialists, and communists. He now speaks out to his Harlem audience about peace and proclaims
that he is not a racist in any form, and he doesn't believe in any form of discrimination or
segregation. On February 21, 1965 three audience members at a lecture at Harlem's Audubon
Ballroom, which Malcolm had rented for his new organization, shoot and killed Malcolm. Police
arrested three suspects with Muslim affiliations who were later convicted.

Malcolm X was a very interesting and complicated person. Throughout his life, Malcolm had
exposure to practically every type of person the world had to offer. In his younger years, he excelled
in his community predominately surrounded by whites. He then got into the hustling business within
the black community which supplied for all types of people. After that, he joined the Nation of
Islam, joining himself with many Muslims. Lastly, Malcolm went on a Hajj to Africa, where his
communication with a diverse group of people expanded. Each time Malcolm had a new group of
people in his life, he had a different alias to go by. Whichever one is remembered most, Malcolm

He then got caught as a burglar and was put in prison. As in many aspects of his life, the book gave
more details of Malcolm's life inside the steel bars. Since no one was in jail with him that was
interviewed in the film, we could not get a good presentation of others' views of his experiences in
jail. While in prison, Malcolm hears about the Nation of Islam through his family. The leader of the
group, Elijah Mohammed had a central idea that all white men were devils. In learning this,
Malcolm thought back to all of the white people he had previously encountered. It is easier for us to
understand Malcolm's thought process after reading the book, since the film did not tell us of all of
his relationships with white people. Malcolm then converted to Islam.
Replacing his last name with "X" did more than just change his name, it changed his personality. He
changed his last named because he did not want to be connected in any way with his old last name
that was given to his ancestors by slave owners. The film really let us know his displeasure with his
old last name. During an interview, Malcolm refused to tell his interviewer his given last name. I felt
as though the movie was very helpful in learning about him as Malcolm X. The book would tell us
about how Malcolm gave powerful speeches and little details about his preaching but you cannot
replace the actual footage of his speeches. On several occasions,

My curiosity has propelled me to read the autobiography of Malcolm X. Malcolm X was one of the

Throughtout history there have been many people who have stood out and in some way made a big
different and I believe they all shared many qualities. One important quality that Malcolm X
possessed was willing to change. I believe without the willingness to change, a person will not see
growth within one's self. I can honesty say that I wish I was moe like Malcolm in this aspect there
has beeb times in my life where I needed to change something that would better me, however I was

No one really knows what kind of impact Malcolm X would have had on history if he had not been
assassinated. His beliefs and philosophy did gain him a place in history as one of the best–known
Black Nationalist Leaders. Everyone seems to have known who Malcolm X was, and he ranks high
with all other Black leaders. His ideas were radical and he was very out spoken. He was a major
force in the development of black history. He fought not only for his people but also for all
oppressed people everywhere. He was well spoken and he laid the groundwork for the black power

Everything he ever had seemed to be lost because he was black. He lived a tough life. He stole,
pimped, and was addicted to drugs especially cocaine. He would go back and forth between Boston
and Harlem to do these things. He was involved with a robbery ring that included two white women.
He eventually got caught and because he was black with white women, was sentenced to more time
than he should have received. At age 21, he was sentenced to prison for ten years.
It was in prison that he was first introduced to the Nation Of Islam and its leader Elijah Muhammad.
His brother, Reginald and Philbert brought him books to read. Malcolm was so fascinated that he
read anything he could get his hands on especially about the Nation of Islam. He especially enjoyed
reading about religion, race and world history. He even wrote to Elijah Muhammad, and Elijah
wrote back. Malcolm became very well spoken and thoughtful, he was always intelligent. Malcolm
completely turned his life around; he started living by the Islamic rules. He did not smoke, swear,
drink, eat pork, gamble, cheat or do drugs. He was released from prison after 7 years and went to

"Malcolm X"
One of the greatest screen biographies, is celebrating an excursion of an American life, beginning in
sorrow and bottoming out on the streets and imprisoned before its hero rejuvenated himself. After
watching the film, I understood the power that we have to change our own lives, how fate doesn't
deal all of the cards. Its hero was born Malcolm little a young African American boy.
He was victimized by violence. His father was murdered, probably by the KKK, which had earlier
burned down the family house. His mother was unable to support her children, so Malcom was sent
to a foster home. He was the brightest student in his classes but was steered away from ambitious
career choices. White teachers told him that, as a Negro, he should look for jobs where he could
"work with his hands." One of his early jobs was as a Pullman porter, then in Harlem he became a

to glimpse where the journey might lead. Denzel Washington stands at the center of the film, in a
performance of enormous coverage. He never seems to be trying for an effect, and yet he is always
convincing. Holding audiences spellbound on street corners, churches, television and at Harvard.
Washington is a congenial, attractive actor, and so it is especially effective to see how he shows the
anger in Malcolm, the unbending dogmatic side. This movie strongly reminds me of Martin Luther
King movies. It reminds me of this because in movies about Martin Luther King life they mostly
only show Kings good part in his life. While watching the Malcolm X movie I learn that Malcolm X

The 1950's and 1960's were a time of racial turmoil throughout most of the United States.
Segregation between blacks and whites was still in full effect, African Americans had to drink from
different water fountains, eat at different restaurants, and even shop at different stores than their
Anglo "neighbors". Many people and organizations fought valiantly for equality in the U.S. such as
Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King jr. and the NAACP. The roles they played were critical in the civil

How Is Malcolm X Compared To Malcolm X
Malcolm X, one of the most influential leaders in the Black community, transformed American
values with his unfiltered statements and his determination for Black liberty and power. However,
his controversial solutions concerned many, as he expressed comments that seemed intimidating,
twisted, and somewhat vengeful, even though he contained honest intentions within his heart. He
held many violent undertones in which made the white–folk very uncomfortable. In addition, his
words caused the violent rebellions and delegitimized Martin Luther King's non–violent resistance
as a philosophy for the fool. People had claimed he was a racial segregationist, as he believed in all
whites to be "devils." He was asked questions like did he advocate violent methods to obtain liberty
for blacks, as he supported Africans Rifle Clubs, and he inspired many clubs for creating violent
Clubs. As Malcolm once said, "There is no such thing as a non–violent revolution." In contrast,
Malcolm denied these allegations of promoting violence, and his point of view shows the reason
how and why the blacks had reacted in that manner. Later, however, Malcolm X did follow the
"Honorable Elijah Mohammed," and had always followed and believed in him. He followed the
doctrines of how whites was "inherently" evil," and could not enter Mecca, due to their skin color.

Introduction
Malcolm X is seen as quite a controversial person. His admirers see him as a courageous human
rights activist who campaigned for the rights of African Americans and showed white America how
racist it was. His enemies see him as a racist, anti–Semitic and violent person.
Malcolm X was orphaned early in life. At the age of six his father was killed and it has been
rumoured that white racists were responsible. Seven years later his mother passed away after which
he lived in a series of foster homes.
At the age of 20 in 1946 he was sentenced to prison for larceny and breaking and entering. During

grandfather. Little was declared "mentally disqualified for military service" after he told draft board

In late 1945, Little returned to Boston, where he and four accomplices committed a series of
burglaries targeting wealthy white families. In 1946, he was arrested while picking up a stolen
watch he had left at a shop for repairs, and in February began serving an eight–to–ten year sentence
at Charlestown State Prison for larceny and breaking and entering.

Book review based on The Autobiography of Malcolm X
Introduction:
This biography of Malcolm X was a book, which had a purpose of enlightening people on how
blacks were treated, it mainly focused on the life of Malcolm and how it affected his life and
changed him. Malcolm X is born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, America. A country where racism
is so prevalent that his family frequently gets into a confrontation with the KKK and Black Legion
society due to his father being a preacher. This results in his fathers' death, his mother 's mental
breakdown, and the separation of his family. It completely put a strain on all of them, as they were
forced apart. Throughout the story Malcolm's personality goes through many transitions due to the
various scenarios he went through, and all of them shape up to make up the man he becomes. It was
written in first person even though Malcolm X didn't write it; Malcolm X draws both on his past and
his present understanding. So we get the feeling that this is the absolute truth even though it was
written by Alex Haley, Its almost as if he chose first person for a reason, this was the controversy
surrounding the book. The book begins when Malcolm's family moves to Michigan where they
continue to experience persecution and violence. White people brutally murder Malcolm's father by
running over his face, from here things go downhill, he is forced to live in a foster home, because

the one of the reasons that the nation of Islam went form 400 members to 40,000 members from

the fact that he gave very articulate and passionate speeches that would lead to bigger and bigger
audiences. He told blacks to end racism "by any means necessary" which included violence.

Malcolm Of The Malcolm X Journey
The Malcolm X Journey
Malcolm Little was born in the mid twentieth century, these were difficult times for the black youth.
As Little grew older he knew there needed to be change, he was one of the few people that was
capable of making that happen for the fellow African–American and African. At a very young age
Malcolm grasped the concept that there 's something not right, that there needed to be an alteration
and thus is where he started his studies. Malcolm needed to be outspoken he wanted to achieve a
certain impact on others. So he began reading into law, that was the only way for him to get some
kind of basic education. In the midst of his devotion to start a revolution, Malcolm Little 's father
was killed. The rage and anger he had took over him and Malcolm became rebellious. Malcolm let
go of all his dreams that he once had and he became a troubled child and started committing felonies
targeting white people, such as armed robbery, burglary. In 1946 he was arrested, it was then and
there where he sat and the unconscious became conscious once again all because of a great
influence. Malcolm Little then changed to Malcolm X, he believed that "X" was his slave name that
was lost. Malcolm X was empowering arising the new man that brought hope and awakened

Malcolm X Bullet
The civil rights era as a result of cultural forces and political awakenings created bold speakers.
Many of these orators were audacious in their speeches, however few came close to Malcolm X.
Malcolm X carried a fearless attitude presenting speeches that have been etched into American
History, one the of the most iconic of these speeches was "Ballot or the Bullet" . It embodies ideas
of self determination coupled with an intense call to action. The "Ballot or the Bullet" is a great
speech because it skillfully straddles the line between inciting violence and inspiring change. The
"Ballot or the Bullet" is capable of leaving a lasting impact due to its inflammatory statements.
Malcolm X uses these statements carefully throughout the speech to grab the audience's attention
when he is attempting to convey important statements. Malcolm X starts the speech with a
description of the difficult choice that African Americans are facing. He states controversially at the
top of the speech, " The Negro Revolt, and Where Do We Go From Here ... it points toward either
the ballot or the bullet" (X) .His description of the Civil Rights movement as a "Negro Revolt" was
contentious due to violent undertones however, it manages to hook the reader and steer the argument
the way Malcolm X desires. Therefore, through controversy Malcolm X accomplishes two goals,
first shocking than progressing society. By shocking society Malcolm X hopes to create change. He
does this through reckless actions, as described by him in Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, "The
greatest compliment anyone can pay me is to say I'm irresponsible". Malcolm X understands that

Malcolm X
Malcolm Little was born on May 19, 1925 In Omaha, Nebraska. His family had eight kids in it and
his mother worked hard to care for all of them. His dad was working for civil rights and threats from
the Black Legion, who were against blacks forced his family to move twice before Malcolm Little
was four years old. In 1929 his home burned down and in 1931 his dad was found dead in the
trolley tracks. Police think those were accidents but the Littles' are certain Black Legion caused
them. Little's mom started having emotional breakdowns after the death of her husband and was
sent to a mental institution while her eight kids went to orphanages and foster care. Little and his
good friend, Malcolm Jarvis were arrested in 1946 for burglary and Little was sentenced to ten years
in prison but got let out early and only had to spend seven years in prison.
Little joined the NOI, (Nation of Islam) a religious group and studied what the leader taught. Like
whites disliked blacks, the NOI wanted to be separated from the whites. Little was a big fan of NOI
and changed his last name from Little (What he thought was a slave name) to X for his tribal name.

In the course of human history there will always be change. In order to bring about that change there
must be something that is so controversial that it can break people away from the normal routine
they have been accustomed to. Few people can raise the amount of attention needed to fuel that

Malcolm used his time in prison to further his education. It was during this time that his brother
Reginald came to visit and told Malcolm about his recent conversion to the Muslim religion.
Intrigued, Malcolm began to study the teachings of the Nation of Islam (NOI) leader Elijah
Muhammad. By the time Malcolm was paroled he was a devoted follower of the NOI, changing his
name to Malcolm X. He decided that Little was a slave name and denoted "X" to signify his lost
tribal name. The NOI taught Muslim beliefs along with the idea that white society actively worked
to keep African– Americans from empowering themselves and achieving political, economic and
social success. Among their many goals they wanted to achieve a state of their own, separate from
one inhabited by white people. Articulate and Intelligent, Malcolm was appointed minister and
national spokesman for the Nation of Islam along with the task of establishing new mosques in
cities such as Detroit, MI and Harlem, NY. Malcolm's great side showed through when he utilized
newspapers, radio, and television in order to bring attention to the NOI and deliver the message to
the public. Malcolm's charisma and conviction were all he needed to largely increase the size of the
NOI. Between the years 1952 and 1963 membership rose from 500 to 30,000. Crowds and

"There can be no black–white unity until there is first some black unity." (Malcolm X, March 8,

Due to his radical views and actions he was detested by many peoples at that time, yet still today he

It was found out that Elijah Mohammed had been partaking in sexual misconduct and that he had

them. This made Malcolm question the beliefs of Elijah, which were basically the foundations of the
Nation of Islam. During this time, many of the leaders of the Nation of Islam became jealous of
Malcolm's success. All of these things contributed to Malcolm eventually leaving the Nation of
Islam in 1964.
Later in 1964, Malcolm X took off on a journey to Arabia to try and find the true religion of Islam.
While in Arabia, he underwent his holy pilgrimage. This experience had a very positive impact on
Malcolm X. While racial hatred in America had forced black people to the lowest levels of society,
Malcolm had come into a society where race didn't determine a persons role. While in Arabia, a
white leader let Malcolm stay with him in his room, which would have been unheard of during the
civil rights movements in the States. It was during this trip to Arabia that Malcolm made a big
change in his way of life. He finally learned to trust people. He found out that the color of one's skin
doesn't reflect what kind of person you are, but it's ones actions that reflect the quality of a person.

During the Civil Rights Movement in the late 1950s and 1960s, important African–American men
fought for economical, political and social equality for their race. Even though they were fighting
for the same thing, their ideas to attain equality were unusually different. Martin Luther King
wanted to a integrate non violent society; on the other hand Malcolm X thought complete separation
was the solution to inequality. Either way both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. were some of

He said in his famous speech, "we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle

Martin Luther King's was trying to push America forward more into desegregation. The quote
reveals to us how Dr. King believed that whites and blacks should work with each other in order to
gain equality. King thought that by having whites and blacks communicate together over time the
bad rooted thoughts of each side would fade away and both sides will start to realize that they have
much in common. King's idea of integration is very good because he is trying to change the mindset
of black and whites unlike Malcolm X who is building the thoughts of separation. That is bad
because then the idea will be passed on from parents to kids which will make it harder to change the
mindset of those people. Martin Luther King thought integration would lead to peace between both
races. Martin Luther King shows us how he wants both races to collaborate together in his speech
"The Future Of Integration", when he said "If we are to make brotherhood a reality, the white man
must treat the Negro right, not merely because the law says so, but because it's natural, because it's
right, and because the Negro is his brother. If the problem is to be solved, men and

Malcolm X Bullet
"Let it be the ballot or the bullet. Let him know that it must be the ballot or the bullet." (X). What
inspired Malcolm X to deliver a dignifying speech about discrimination? There were many
hardships in Malcolm X's life from personal to historical events that led to his speech, "The Ballot
or the Bullet", delivered on April third, 1964 to address all African–Americans to take action
through either the ballot or the bullet with his use of emotional appeals, parallelisms, and diction.
However, there were many ambivalent responses following the controversial speech, but the effects
it has on today's society is undeniably notable.
Malcolm X's brutal childhood influenced him to become a significant activist in the Civil Rights
Movement and his passion for equality. According to "Say It Plain, Say It Loud – American
RadioWorks", after Malcolm X's family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
history especially with his message of 'nonviolence and violence, integration and separatism,
pragmatism and revolution.' (Raymond). In contrast to the white men who viewed Malcolm X as a
'tragic victim', Raymond viewed Malcolm X as one of the most influential people because of his
speech in dealing with violence versus nonviolence. According to X, "It's time now for you and me
to... realize what the ballot is for; what we're supposed to get when we cast a ballot; and that if we
don't cast a ballot, it's going to end up in a situation where we're going to have to cast a bullet." The
ideals and values Malcolm X expressed serve as a foundation for many people to admire especially
his nonviolence and violence by the ballot or the bullet. The repetition of 'the ballot or the bullet' is
key to emphasize the significance of the message Malcolm X wanted to convey, it is either equality
through the ballots or it is inequality through the bullets. The impact and the influence of "The
Ballot or the Bullet" on today's society are absolutely notable due to its

Association. Marcus Garvey and his followers fought for racial separation and more power for
blacks. Growing up, Malcolm's family moved a lot due to violence and prejudices aimed at his

Instead, he moved to Roxbury, a predominantly black section of Boston, with his sister Ella and her
husband. Malcolm took on his first job in Roxbury as a shoe–shiner. Here, Malcolm learned the role
of a hustler. (Haley) In 1942, Malcolm decided to get a job as a railroad dining car porter and settle
in Harlem. While in Harlem, Malcolm got mixed up in robbery, prostitution, narcotics, and many
other criminal activities. Living the life of a hustler, drug dealer, and pimp made Malcolm notorious
on the streets. Malcolm also became addicted to drugs. He was even given the nickname "Red"
because of his red hair. Malcolm said jail, jobs, and the army were the three things that worried him
the most. (Breitman) After only a year in Harlem, Malcolm moved back to Boston and continued his
life of crime. There he created a house–robbing gang. It all caught up with him in February of 1946.
He was arrested, convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison in Charleston, Massachusetts for
burglary. (Haley) While in prison, Malcolm began educating himself in history, philosophy, religion,
and literature. He read the works of de Bois, who founded the NAACP in 1909, Shakespeare,
Socrates, and Esop. He also carefully studied the lives of Ghandi and Net Turner. After joining the
prison debate team, he was given the opportunity to compete against Harvard and M.I.T. students
visiting the prison.

Comparison Of Malcolm X

  • 1. Comparison Of Malcolm X On the other hand, Malcolm X had a different approach in providing African Americans equality. Malcolm X believed anything must be done to provide equality for African Americans. For Malcolm, anything would also be violence, unlike Dr. King who favored on non–violence ways to achieve equality. During 1950's and early 1960's Malcolm became a speaker for the Nation of Islam. Malcolm created newspapers and organized several temples to get his message out. For Malcolm, whites were devils because they oppressed blacks. Malcolm was one of the leaders that motivated racial dignity, black power, and economic opportunities for blacks. As the lines in PBS states "Brothers and sisters, the white man has brainwashed us black people to fasten our gaze on a blond– haired, blue–eyed Jesus! We're worshipping a Jesus that doesn't even look like us! ... The white man has taught us to shout and sing and pray until we die..." it explains that Christianity is not a religion that Black people can follow. He felt that Christianity is a religion followed by Whites and we as African Americans cannot follow this religion. Also, Malcolm believed that nonviolence was a realistic concept as he states, "I don't favor violence. If we could bring about recognition and respect of our people by peaceful means, well and good. Everybody would like to reach his objectives peacefully. But I'm also a realist. The only people in this country who are asked to be nonviolent are black people" (PBS). In other words for him being violent is not needed but has become necessary. In these lines Malcolm believes that Whites are not peaceful and they continue to be violent and as a result African Americans are asked to be nonviolent. Like, Martin Luther King. Malcolm X delivered a speech known as "Message to the Grassroots" on November 10th 1963 in Detroit. This speech clearly reflects the differences in viewpoints that these two men carried and how they believed in different ways of bringing equality for blacks. Malcolm believed that there could not be a revolution without violence because that is the only way whites would understand. As stated by Malcolm X, in his speech, "To understand this, you have to go back to what [the] young brother here referred to as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay on Malcolm X Malcolm X Malcolm X was a man of strong words and beliefs. Some say that he was a man of hate and violence. Some also say that he was a smart man of hope and peace. Malcolm X's influence on people was felt more than it was alive rather than dead. Malcolm X was a major contributor to the black societies across the world. He fought for what he believed in and educated the young. Though his early life was full of up's and downs he managed to, what some would say, "turn his life around". In doing this he managed to gain the upper hand of the African American culture by giving them the hope that one day they would if not own be apart of, what he called, "white mans society". Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Malcolm s' death is a silence that is a loud sound to the world. Nobody really understood what he was fighting for until he was shot down in the Audubon Ball room. People of the opposite race weren't trying to hear what Malcolm had to say about anything. Malcolm X had a persuasive way with words. He had a voice that influenced people to listen at what he had to say. Malcolm X's voice changed the Nation of Islam from Six hundred people in 1952 to about 30,000 in 1963. (Headrick) The only way he knew to get his point across to the white society was to encourage violence amongst the black community. This was the only way to make the white society see the black people as equals in their society. When Malcolm X was interviewed about the murder of John F. Kennedy, he replied that" it was a case of chickens coming home to roost". (Malcolm X) Even Elijah Muhammad was embarrassed by his remarks so he told Malcolm to shut his mouth for a while. (Encyclopedia Britannica) People often misunderstood what Malcolm X stood for. This was because of the racial differences that were going on at that time. Also because of the way he talked about people and the way he presented himself. It didn't help that all this was going on in the 1960's were racism was in his prime. After the death of Malcolm X people of all races started to see the vision that he had in mind for his people. He left an impression on this world to stick ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Malcolm X Continuity Lee and Haley's last defect in presenting the autobiography of Malcolm X is their presentation of his views after his trip to Mecca and before his death. In order to understand this misrepresentation the context surrounding Malcolm's life is important. In April of 1964 Malcolm made a trip to Mecca and then Africa, UK, and France. On this trip, Malcolm's views towards black rights continue to morph. Upon returning to the United States, Malcolm continues to give speeches presenting his somewhat altered visions. Also upon his return, Malcolm begins to receive death threats from members of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm is then assassinated on February 19, 1965. In the last thirty minutes of the film, Malcolm gives a speech based on a real speech ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Malcolm's beliefs appear to make a very small shift from the beginning of his popularity to the end of his life. However, this does not mean that the changes that Malcolm does make do not hold significance, but it is important to emphasize the continuity in Malcolm's philosophy despite these transformations. Next, interestingly, Manning Marable argues that Malcolm's philosophies stem from his childhood and remain almost completely consistent through his entire life. " But what I find in my own research is greater continuity than discontinuity. What I see in Malcolm is that his father Earl Little and Louise Little were committed Garveyites, advocates of black nationalism and Pan–Africanism in Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association, joined in the 19–teens and '20s; that Earl Little was the leader of the UNIA chapter branch in Omaha, Nebraska, then in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in East Chicago, Indiana, and then finally in Lansing – in Detroit, Michigan; that there was a long legacy and a foundation of Malcolm's evolving politics". It is difficult to confirm the continuity of Malcolm's beliefs before his speeches, interviews, and conversation were recorded and presented towards the public. However, the autobiography and Malcolm's family members confirmed the idea that Malcolm was exposed to black nationalist politics early in his life by his mother and father. Despite the unknown about Malcolm's beliefs during his upbringing and young adulthood, Lee paints a much more straightforward picture than reality. Lee presenting Malcolm in this fashion allows him to shatter the myth about Malcolm typically held outside of black communities. Presenting him as having the potential of becoming an integrationist easily dismantles the idea that Malcolm was anti–white. However, his actual position towards the struggles of African Americans in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Malcolm X We all know Malcolm X as one of the most famous human rights activist, but how did he get that far and become famous? Malcolm X was born as Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. Malcolm was the fourth of eight children born to Louise and Earl Little. Due to Earl Little's civil rights activism, the family was subjected to a lot of harassment from white supremacist groups including the KKK. A fact about Malcolm X was he had his first encounter with racism before he was even born. With all the racism encounters the family had, Earl Little moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1926 and then to Lansing, Michigan in 1928. The racism was still following them and they then watched their Lansing, Michigan home burn to the ground. Earl Little then moved the family to East Lansing where he built a new home. Two years later, in 1931, his body was found and Malcolm's mother did not recover from his death and then was put into a mental institution in 1937. Malcolm and his siblings were separated and placed in foster homes. In 1938, Malcolm X attended Mason High School where he was one of the only black students. He excelled academically and was well liked by his classmates, who elected him class president. A turning point came in 1939, where Malcolm's teacher asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up and he replied with lawyer. His teacher responded, " One of life's first needs is for us to be realistic ... you need to think of something you can be ... why don't you plan on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shortly after this Malcolm was silenced for 90 days due to one of his comments about president Kennedy's assassination, he said "Kennedy never foresaw that the chickens would come home to roost so soon". Elijah Muhammad silenced Malcolm for 90 days but Malcolm suspected he was silenced for other reasons. After he was silenced and the relations he had found out about and the thought that the Nation of Islam was built on mostly lies, Malcolm terminated his member ship with the Nation of Islam and sought to create his own religious organization called the Muslim Mosque. On what can be considered a new awakening Malcolm went on a trip, he traveled to Saudi Arabia. While he was there he shared his beliefs with constituents of other religions. Malcolm wrote regarding his travels that he had finally gotten to meet people, Davis 4 blond hair blue eyed people, that he could call his brothers. After befriending and ministering to boxer Cassius Clay, the boxer decides to convert to the Muslim religion and join the Nation of Islam. In February 1964, Clay announces he has changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Also it was during the time immediately after his return that the attempts on Malcolm's life became more and more prominent. • 7. Symbols In Malcolm X Symbols are shown throughout the film representing Malcolm's transformation. "Symbols are words, gestures, pictures or objects that carry a particular meaning which is only recognized by those who share the culture. The words in a language or jargon belong to this category, as do dress, hairstyles, Coca–Cola, flags and status symbols" (Hofstede, 1997). Initially, the zoot suit that Malcolm wears indicates that he is involved in a hustler lifestyle. Once Malcolm is released from prison, the audience can see the transformation he underwent. In order to rid himself of that burden, Malcolm changed his last name to "X". This is due to X signifying the unknown in mathematics. In the same way that Malcolm did not know his origins. An important symbol to note is the similarities between the house burning of Malcolm's childhood home and the home he lived in with his family. Both scenes begin in the same manner, the waking up of wife and collecting the children. Both scenes also end in similar ways with Malcolm and his father holding a gun. • 8. The Autobiography Of Malcolm X Do something about it. Everyone has problems from struggles in life. Malcolm X told his life story of how he overcame in his autobiography simply called The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. His life changed the world historically, socially, and especially politically by taking a stand against racism of all kinds which still exists in today's "modern" standards. Using his personal life experience with racism towards African–Americans, Malcolm spreads the word on equality for all with a realistic tone that inspires trust in him. Malcolm X reaches all kinds of people in an effort to voice his thoughts on equality for all using rhetorical and persuasive techniques for a more effective message. From the beginning, the story Malcolm X tells uses a tone of realism and relatability to establish a dominant impression upon the reader's mind. An example of this tone is when Malcolm, at a young age, accepts his ultimate fate that had just befallen his father. Malcolm tells Alex that "It has always been my belief that I, too, will die by violence. I have done all that I can to be prepared" (4). The definitiveness he says this with is not an attempt at making readers feel empathy for him, but to appeal to logic by presenting this as a fact of the kind of world he lives in. When Malcolm chooses to state "die by violence" (4) instead of describing what kind of violence or with more emotion, he gets the reader past the emotional aspect of his belief with this stolid diction ... As Malcolm once said, "There is no such thing as a non–violent revolution." In contrast, Malcolm denied these allegations of promoting violence, and his point of view shows the reason how and why the blacks had reacted in that manner. It is clear that Malcolm X was only trying to push America backwards while Martin Luther King's was trying to push America forward more into desegregation. The quote reveals to us how Dr. King believed that whites and blacks should work with each other in order to gain equality. King thought that by having whites and blacks communicate together over time the bad rooted thoughts of each side would fade away and both sides will start to realize that they have much in common. King's idea of integration is very good because he is trying to change the mindset of black and whites unlike Malcolm X who is building the thoughts of separation. That is bad because then the idea will be passed on from parents to kids which will make it harder to change the mindset of those people. Martin Luther King thought integration would lead to peace between both races. Martin Luther King shows us how he wants both races to collaborate together in his speech "The Future Of Integration", when he said "If we are to make brotherhood a reality, the white man must treat the Negro right, not merely because the law says so, but because it's natural, because it's right, and because the Negro is his brother.
