Wilfred Owen Poetic Devices
Wilfred Owen was a Teacher, Soldier, and Poet. He was born in 1893 in Oswestry, England. In 1911,
he passed the entrance exam for University of London but could not afford it without a scholarship.
In exchange for housing Owen became a vicar's assistant near Reading. He then attended the
University of Reading studied there. When the war started, Owen was an English teacher in
Bordeaux. He did not rush back to England to enlist but did enlist in June on 1916. In 1917, his
service had led to shellshock and forced him to return home from the front. It was during this time
he was being cared for in Craiglockhart hospital and met his friend and mentor Siegfried Sassoon
and wrote most of his now well–known poems. This time away from the front and the then–
experimental therapy being used at the hospital helped Owen recover enough to return to the front a
year later. Owen and his men were an essential part of taking the Hindenburg line in 1918 and he
was awarded the military cross. Sadly, little under a month later Owen was killed crossing a canal at
Ors and only saw four of his poems published. The focus of this essay is to show how this amazing
writer used poetic devices to tell people away from the front the horrors of war. Owen used many
devices in his poetry and this essay will focus on three onomatopoeia, alliteration, and Simile.
Owen used onomatopoeia in most of his poems. It is a useful way to describe the sounds of war, an
example is in his poem Dulce Et Decorum Est it

Ee Cummings Poetic Devices
People express their strong feelings in many ways, through actions, verbal or written words.
American poet, E.E. Cummings found his way of conveying his feelings to the world through poems
at a young age. Throughout his life, Cummings experienced many ups and downs; from affairs to
wars. Cummings' unique style of poetry, filled with broken rules, strong emotions and literary
elements communicates true feelings from the heart of Cummings from all that he experienced. His
poem, "I Have Found What You Are Like", explores many of the poetic devices found in Cummings'
style, interesting use of capitalization, punctuation and metaphors, that help to convey his feelings to
his readers.
Throughout his work, E.E. Cummings uses the visual effect of ... Show more content on

Cummings often used metaphors in his poems to cleverly express his feelings of both good and bad.
Comparisons, metaphors or extended metaphors are seen throughout his work, most commonly
comparing Cummings subjects to nature. By using metaphors throughout his poem, Cummings
helps the reader understand what he is truly meaning, and how he may see things, as they differ for
each person. In his poem "I Have Found What You Are Like", an extended metaphor is explored
throughout his work, as Cummings compares this special someone to certain aspects in nature. He
starts off his poem comparing the person as a whole, to a specific part of nature, "i have found what
you are like/the rain". Though this statement could have been confusing, throughout the poem, he
further elaborates his true intentions of comparing her to rain. After a subject change in the poem,
Cummings specifically compares his feelings when his subject smiles as an "stirringofbirds between
his arms". Hence more specifically explaining his heart beating fast by the coolness of her smile.
This also makes the poem interesting as it keeps his theme of nature. In a separate poem, he again
relates his subject to nature, stating, "it's you are whatever a moon has always meant/and whatever a
sun will always sing is you". These two lines of his poem "[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]"
explains to whoever this is written to that he is the light in his life,

Acquainted With The Night Poetic Devices
In "Acquainted with the Night," by Robert Frost, a first person narrator wanders out of the night and
then back again. During his dark and dim travels the man stops to listen to a cry from a distance.
After his pause, the man continues on his journey, indifferent about the night. "Acquainted with the
Night" contains many different poetic devices that help the continuity and theme flourish. Since this
poem is a terza rima, it allows the reader to quickly and smoothly operate through the poem. The
terza rima rhyme scheme offers a steady rhythm for the reader to follow along. Furthermore, the
authors word choice of "saddest city lane," and "dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain," help to
convey a facade of melancholiness and depression. However, lines like, "I have walked out in rain––
and back in rain," ultimately portray the underlying message of the poem. This poem resonates
deeply with me because it offers a different perspective to any challenges and hard times a person
can face. Throughout my sophomore and junior year of high school, my attitude towards life was
not optimistic. I grew towards pessimism, and would simply go through my days waiting, begging
for the day to be over. I, like the narrator, had "out walked the furthest city light." I can remember
just sitting through one of Coach Day's math classes and closing my eyes, envisioning the 2:55 p.m
announcements coming on, and knowing that I would be able to go home. ... Show more content on

are my absolute favorite because the author is flat out telling the reader that it is okay to struggle in
life. The hardest blades truly are forged in the hottest flames, and this poem emphasizes how true
that message is. "Acquainted with the Night" is much more than a poem. It is a mantra, a way of
life. This poem can rid the blinding haze from one's eyes. A tiny dose of optimism can go along
way––even "beyond the furthest city

Feathers By Nujabes Poetic Devices
The human voice is a powerful instrument that can be played by all and can spread a message, if not
verbally, then demonstrated through our actions. What we say can be used to encourage as well as
destroy. But, while seemingly ironic, being aware and listening to someone's silence and to what
isn't said can be even more beneficial than what is. Through compassion and consideration, bettering
one another's lives is the most important ability we have in life. To improve lives, awareness is one
of the first steps. The song titled "Feather" by Nujabes epitomizes the idea that especially at times of
ignorance, we reap our own consequences. In verse two, lines six and seven, the narrator dubs the
news as propaganda for spreading hyperbolic messages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tone reinforces the message that helping others with their well–being in mind is the most
important thing in life. Lyrically, this song has an optimistic tone despite the narrator encountering
traces of hopelessness in the daily news. This is most evident in the chorus. The speaker decides to
keep a positive outlook while riding an escalator, meaning they are moving forward and upward,
both of which are used to describe rising above negativity to something that is greater, or better.
Similarly, in verse three, it states "I will survive, divine the time to cry". It's reasonable that by
"survive" the narrator means getting past the world's distressed state, while "divine the time to cry"
means that they will find the time to mourn later on, but for now, they'll keep their composure. In
both cases, the lyrics' tone encourages us to support fellow human beings as the narrator did
mentally by not being brought down by negativity. The tune's serene musical tone reflects the
peaceful message that the writer is trying to communicate. Between the twelfth and thirteenth lines
in verse two, there is an audible shift in pitch and possibly tone. When the narrator begins about how
stunned someone is as they are shot, it goes from the key peaceful tone in line twelve to a brief and
more austere–sounding tone in the next line before reverting back. These details may have been
intentional considering that death is a much grimmer subject. The once optimistic and peaceful tones
suggest that positive sentiment should be extracted from the tune as opposed to harmful ones.
Connecting back to the theme, the change in the musical tone represents the writer's recognition that
our acts have outcomes (here, the voluntary action of shooting someone results in their death).
Overall, the tone, lyrical and musical, further pushes how a positive outlook can correlate with a
positive future and how

Drake Poetic Devices
Teens and Young adults seem to frequently listen to music throughout the day. If it is not in the car
while driving, it is while walking to class or just simply while doing homework. However, how
many adolescents really pay attention to the meaning of the song or the poetic devices that are used
throughout the song? Drake's song featuring Rhianna, Too Good, implies a message of love and
explains how he tries his hardest to talk to Rhianna but she has seemed to have discovered herself
without discovering their relationship; while they are conversing they are not understanding each
other; throughout the song we see a pattern of similes, paradoxes, and imagery. In this song Drake
uses the literary device simile. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A paradox is "a statement or proposition that seems self–contradictory or absurd but in reality
expresses a possible truth." (Dictionary.com) Throughout this song we see many examples of
Paradoxes. He continually contradicts what he is saying. In the song he states "Got me on flights
overseas, and I still can't get across to you." (Drake lines 27–28) Through this quote he uses a phrase
that contradicts its self, by saying he is on flights overseas but still cannot get across to her which
gives the meaning of him trying to talk to her but he still cannot get through to her. The Paradox
allows the listener to realize how difficult it is for Drake to get across to Rhianna. He continues to
try and reach her but it seems as if it were impossible for him. This is another one of the problems
that he is facing with Rhianna and another reason to why he is so hopeless about their relationship.
Another example of a Paradox that is found in the song would be "Free time is costing me more than
it seems." (Drake 52) Similar to the line "Got me on flight overseas but I still can't get across to you"
(Drake 27–28). Drake contradicts himself by saying that something that is supposed to be free is
costing him. Through this line he is trying to emphasize how much free time she is costing him. It
allows the listener to see how much Drake is putting into the relationship from his part. Making the

Poetic Devices
Poetic Devices in I'll Be Home For Christmas "I'll be home for Christmas" was written by Walter
Kent and Buck Ram and is often referred to as the saddest and maybe the best Christmas song of all
time. The song was first written in 1943 and was revised 1948. This definitely is one of the best and
saddest christmas song. Other than its great music it uses many poetic devices like repetition,
imagery and being a narrative. This essay will describe why the use of these poetic devices makes it
such a great song. Kent and Ram used repetition to describe how much the person in the song
craved being at home for Christmas. They first used it by saying "I'll be home for Christmas" (2:1)
this helped us start thinking what it is this person wants. Kent and Ram then go on to say "Christmas
Eve will find me" (3:1) making it easier to visualize or think that he is having trouble getting home
but still keeps a positive mindset. Finally the song says " If only in my dreams' (3:4) which makes us
realize that he won't be able to make it home for Christmas this year. And that he has been saying
how much he wishes he could get home before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The imagery used in"I'll be home for Christmas" plays a big part in the being such a great song.
Kent and Ram did an amazing job of using the imagery, they first used it when the song says "I'm
dreaming of a place I love even more than i usually do" (1:1) this makes us imagine that he is far
from a place he misses dearly. Another cause of it being used is " although it's a long road back I
promise you I'll be home for Christmas" (1:3) this makes the reader/listener realize that the place he
misses so dearly is his house and that he is promising to a loved one that he will make it in time for
christmas. The last case of the use of imagery is seen in "find me where the love light beams" ( 3:2)
and he is obviously telling his loved one that he won't be able to make it in time but that she may
find him in her heart

The name of the song, Butterfly Effect, meaning the style of doors on his Lamborghini, sets the
"rich" tone of the song. To start, he says, "Hidden Hills, deep off in the main". The term "hidden
hills" really means a wealthy neighborhood in the hills of California where many celebrities live.
Next, M&M's, sweet like candy cane, he is using simile to compare M&Ms to candy canes. Going
back to the title of the song where he talks about his car, he also adds in the song, Bend laws, Bend
lanes, is a metaphor meaning that he speeds in his expensive car, and gets caught by the police. As
you may know, Travis talks a lot about how his life is great and how he is a celebrity. Therefore, he
states, Heatin' up, baby, I'm just heating up. Consequently,

Poetic Devices In Thou Blind Man's Mark
Sidney uses many common poetic devices in Thou Blind Man's Mark, which help convey the his
complex attitude toward desire, yet some are found to be a little more unusual. The beginning of
each line begins with a single–syllable word, except for three. The words are simple and brief until
line five in which he begins with "Desire, desire!" repeating it and utilizing an exclamation mark.
Repetition is a form of grabbing the reader's attention so they can understand what they need to pay
attention to, so as to understand the full meaning of the work. The last two lines both start with
longer words, "Within" and "Desiring". Commencing a line using words with more syllables would
allow readers to infer that they are of an increased importance. The choice of words is also
fascinating: desire, within, and desiring again. Desire is often an emotion that leads to jealousy and
envy, but perhaps the word "within" could mean that desire is really something one feels because
they lack something within themselves. Desire is felt when one is not satisfied with who they are,
but because no one is every truly satisfied with themselves, they will continue to desire again and
again. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"In vain thou..." is repeated on three concurrent lines, thereby reinforcing the belief that desire will
never lead us to happiness. Envy will not be the driving force to people trying to reach the greener
grass. The desire to be like others and have what they have does not encourage people to improve
themselves because they will never view themselves as perfect. In addition, Sidney described the
desire and wants to be a web without an end. A spider web creates an image in the readers minds of
circles spinning around and around with no conceivable end. Desire will only ever just be one of the
parts that keeps you in the abyss that lacks self satisfaction in its

Poetic Devices Used In The Highwayman
Do you know what it's like to do anything for the person you love? In the story "The Highwayman"
by Alfred Noyes, a woman loves a man so much that she dies for him. I think that this poem is a
masterpiece because many people have enjoyed it for generations. A big part of what makes this
poem a masterpiece are poetic devices. There are many poetic devices that this poem uses and they
draw the reader in and make them interested in the poem. I'm glad that this poem uses the poetic
devices that it uses because it makes the poem way better than it would've been if it hadn't used it.

Australian Poetic Devices
The main poetic device that I used in my poem was imagery, mainly to create an image in the
audience's mind that Australia is the most perfect place in the world and that it can't be compared to
any other place in the world. Instances where this happened were ... 'bright and radiant colours',
'deep sapphire sky' and 'dark and stormy clouds.' Another poetic devise that I used quite a bit was
symbolism – 'the beauty makes me wonder why this place is not completely white and pink' because
white symbolises purity and peace, and pink symbolises beauty. The third poetic device I used was
alliteration which was used in 'The water shimmers in the stream, silent, shimmering and stunning'
where the alliteration is on the letter s. The fourth type of poetic

Poetic Devices In Annabel Lee
Edgar Allan Poe's poem "Annabel Lee" deals with loss in the form of death. The speaker in the
poem describes his love for Annabel Lee and then continues to describe how he has lost her. He is
unable to let go of her and is overtaken by his grief. This sense of holding on is illustrated in the
structure of the poem and the various poetic devices used in it. Edgar Allan Poe mainly employs
both metrical and non–metrical elaborate sound patterns to convey the deep pain accompanied by
loss. The poem begins by the speaker speaking of his lover, Annabel Lee. It takes the shape of a
story and starts with the famous line used in fairytales and children's stories: "It was many and many
a year ago" (Poe 1). This stanza does not bring up loss yet, but focuses on the maiden Annabel Lee,
who "live[s] with no other thought than to love and be loved by [the speaker]" (Poe 4–5). The
speaker addresses the reader when he introduces her and tells them that Annabel Lee is "a
maiden...whom they may know" (Poe 3), and thus highlights her status in the speaker's life. This
emphasis is supported by the enjambment between lines 3–4; line 3 ends on the word "know," which
echoes the importance of Annabel Lee not only in the poet's life, but in the world. The ... Show more

for how to deal with his lover's death. Instead of letting go, he clings on to her by choosing to

Harlem Renaissance Poetic Devices
During the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes uses imagery, repetition, and simile in his poem,
¨Life is Fine¨ to demonstrate the condition of Black America in the early twentieth century. The first

imagery. In his poem, ¨Life is Fine,¨ Langston Hughes writes, ¨But it was High up there! It was

The Tyger Poetic Devices
William Blake's 1793 poem "The Tyger" has many interpretations, but its main purpose is to
question God as a creator. Its poetic techniques generate a vivid picture that encourages the reader to
see the Tyger as a horrifying and terrible being. The speaker addresses the question of whether or
not the same God who made the lamb, a gentle creature, could have also formed the Tyger and all its
darkness. This issue is addressed through many poetic devices including rhyme, repetition, allusion,
and symbolism, all of which show up throughout the poem and are combined to create a strong
image of the Tyger and a less than thorough interpretation of its maker.
The first stanza directly addresses the Tyger, which is, according to the Oxford English Dictionary,
"a large, carnivorous feline quadruped." It sets up the theme of night, along with which comes
darkness and evil. The third and fourth lines ask the first of many repetitive and, in a sense,
unanswerable questions: what kind of creator has the ability to make something with such "fearful
symmetry" (4)? The second stanza moves on to ask the same question in a different format,
inquiring where the Tyger came from: heaven or hell. Starting in line 9, the speaker uses powerful
imagery to ask again what God could create the Tyger. The diction portrays the Tyger as evil, with a
"twist[ed]" heart (10). Lines 13–16 make up the fourth stanza and compare the creator to a
blacksmith. Lines 19 and 20 ask two questions that are different

Poetic Devices In Kubla Khan
Introduction: S.T Coleridge's 'Kubla Khan' is a visionary poem of 54 lines, about the magical,
mystical place, Xanadu where the heavenly paradise is overshadowed by a hint of evil. The poem
has three types of poetic elements which will be discussed along with relevant examples. First, the
poem is replete with powerful visual imagery which explains the theme and brings to life the vivid
imagination of the poet. Second, sound has been used to convey not just motion and energy but also
a musical effect due to the use of alliteration, assonance and anaphora. Third, the rhythm or the
unusual rhyme scheme increases the creative impact of the poem.

mind, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Coleridge wrote the poem, the first 36 lines were written in third person, in a trancelike state
where he describes a grandiose palace with miles of surrounding countryside. The rest of the poem
was written in first person after a visitor interrupted him causing him to lose his train of thought so
that he could no longer recollect the dream in totality. There are four ways in which rhythm has been
effectively utilized though the poem does not follow a traditional pattern. First, the meter or pattern
of stressed, i.e. long and unstressed, i.e. short syllable changes throughout the poem. Iambic

Poetic Devices In The Raven
The poem I decided to explicate was "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. The reason I chose this poem
is because I love Edgar Allen Poe's writings. I have always loved reading his dark and twisted
poems, even when I was younger in middle school his poems always got my attention the most. I
had never read "The Raven" until now, but I am familiar with some of his others like "The Tell–Tale
Heart." I did really enjoy reading "The Raven", the actual raven was a little creepy, but I also like to
read poems with elements like that. In the first stanza there are two types of poetic devices used, one
of them is the use of alliteration which is found very prominent throughout the entire poem. Some
uses of alliteration that are found in the first stanza are "while I pondered, weak and weary" or
"while I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,/ as of some one gently rapping,
rapping at my chamber door." The whole first stanza is pretty much an example alliteration because
of how every word starts with the same letter or sounds closely alike. Then the second type of poetic
device used was the use of foreshadowing. Poe uses foreshadowing when says there is a visitor
tapping on his door as if something bad is going to happen. In the second stanza Poe still uses
alliteration, though not as strongly as in the first stanza. Some examples of alliteration used in the
second stanza were found in the lines, "Eagerly I wished the morrow;–vainly I had sought to borrow

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night By Dylan Thomas
Written by Dylan Thomas, the poem "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" was published in
1951, two years before his early death at age 39. Referred to as a villanelle, this poem contains five
three lined stanzas and one four lined stanza. In the first stanza, the unrevealed speaker is telling an
unknown person not to give into death peacefully, but to fight against it as he or she expresses,
"rage, rage against the dying of the light" (line 3). In this first stanza, Thomas uses a metaphor to
compare dying of the light to death. In the next stanza, the speaker acknowledges that "wise men"
near death know that their death is inevitable because "their words had forked no lightning," but still
encourages them not to give into death (4–5). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To illustrate, anaphora, which is the repetition of a word or phrase, is identified through the repeated
use of "do not go gentle into that good night" (1,6,12,18). Similarly, Thomas also repeats the phrase
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light" to create the same effect (3,9,15,19). Given that the poem
is a villanelle, by definition, it follows a pattern in which the first and third lines are alternated at the
end of the stanzas and both repeated at the end of the last stanza. By way of repetition, Thomas
seems to be emphasizing the message the lines express, which is to not die peacefully but to fight
against death, showing an unwillingness to give up. The repetition and strict structure by which the
poem follows also helps the poem flow and sound pleasing to the ears (euphony). Furthermore,
Thomas repeats this message, but with each stanza he applies it to a new subject: "wise men...good
men...wild men...grave men...my father" (4,7,10,13,16). Interestingly, by changing the subject,
Thomas gives the impression that the message is meant for all people, no matter what they are
dealing with or who they may be. In addition, Thomas uses exact rhyme to help with flow and unity
between the stanzas. For example, the two repeated phrases rhyme with "night" and "light," while
the middle lines of the tercets rhyme with "day" and "they" (1–3,5–6,9,12,15,18–19). By staying
true to the strict villanelle form, the five three lined stanzas follow an

Juxtaposition In William Gibson's Poetic Devices
Gibson uses various poetic devices to create an effective, mysterious poem. In this essay, I will
describe the devices, and the way he uses them to create mystery. The poet uses juxtaposition by
various devices, personification and alliteration. Gibson uses juxtaposition to compare the difference
between the journey on the investigator's boat, and the actual island. On the journey, the weather
'broke blue and bright', however on the island it is 'ghastly in the cold sunlight'. In my first piece of
evidence, the poet uses alliteration of the 'b' sound, which is pleasant and easy to say, making it feel
friendly, however 'cold sunlight' is an oxymoron, making it seem as if, on the island, even the sun
feels cold and unwelcoming. The difference in the environments happens so suddenly, the reader
feels unfamiliar and disorientated due to the change in environments. This use of alliteration and an
oxymoron in conjunction creates a strong contrast, also known as juxtaposition. These poetic
devices makes the reader feel unfamiliar, and disorientated, causing the reader to ... Show more

When the lighthouse is described as 'naked', it makes the lighthouse feel weak as when you're

true intention, even though the lighthouse isn't a living being. This makes the reader confused due to
not knowing how to feel, and due to the confusion, adds further mystery by the methods mentioned

12 Days of Christmas
Many readers don't know about poetic devices and where they are mostly located in literature.
Poetic devices in general is a group of certain things that many people use in order to make
something rhyme, in most parts. Such thing can be mostly found in songs, where one of the many
devices, repetition, is situated in the lyrics of the song. Considering that in many different types
modern or ancient music, readers can always find a way to visualize the lyrics of the song, this is
known as the Imagery poetic device. This particular device can be found in the song that has been
chosen called 12 days of Christmas. The song was chosen on behalf of the holy holiday and the
speculation along with many theories that the song is related to religion. ... Show more content on

Poetic Devices In Jim Stevens's 'Schizophrenia'
In Jim Stevens poem "Schizophrenia" (Pg. 115) He uses a house as a catalyst to describe the feelings
of schizophrenia by using several poetic devices. He does not follow a set meter or rhyme scheme
making this a free verse poem aiding in the delivery of emotion. The theme of the poem is anger
with bleak and chaotic also being able to describe what he feels with words such as suffered,
slamming, and angry being used throughout the poem. Reading and narrating the poem a feeling of
disorganization and unpleasant is present as one would imagine a person suffering from
schizophrenia would undergo. The impression the poem leaves is a battle being raged amongst many
coming through the eyes of one person. The house represents the brain with the other events going
on being emotions, relationships, or even synapsis and different areas of the brain firing neurons
causing certain sentiments. He achieves this by using poetic devices such as personification,
allegory, imagery, metaphors, and symbol. The poem is littered throughout with examples of
personification and metaphors as personifications can be said to be a type of metaphor. Cases of this
can be seen in each stanza such as in stanza one with the poem stating, "It was the house that
suffered most" (Stevens 1) showing the house having human emotions. In Stanza two another
instance is "The house came to miss the shouting voices" (Stevens 9). The personification isn't
limited to just the house, Stevens also personifies rooms in stanza three writing "rooms declared
their loyalties" (13). By understanding what schizophrenia is, the challenge of finding meaning to
these examples is simplified. Schizophrenia is defined as "a mental disorder that is characterized by
disturbances in thought, perception, and behavior" (Merriam–Webster). It can then be inferred that
the house acts as the brain as schizophrenia is a mental disorder, while the rooms could be different
people the person hears, each retreating to their section or "loyalties. These instances of
personification provide images that the reader can draw upon and Stevens provides even more
powerful imagery throughout the poem. As the reader recites the poem a vivid image of a dull house
with inhabitants that do not get

She Walks In Beauty Poetic Devices
Throughout time, love has proven to be one of the strongest motivators of mankind. It has served as
the motivation for both war and peace. One of the greatest contributions love has made to mankind
is that of art. Poetry and music are methods of art that people use to express love. These methods are
effective because of the poetic devices they use to describe love. In both the love poem "She Walks
in Beauty" by Lord Byron and the love song "Just the Way You Are" by Khari Cain, Philip
Lawrence, Ari Levine, Bruno Mars, and Khalil Walton poetic devices are used to describe love for a
woman. While Cain, Lawrence, Levine. Mars, and Walton in"Just the Way You Are" use hyperbole
and repetition to express love in their song, Lord Byron in"She Walks in Beauty" more effectively
uses simile and juxtaposition express love in his poem. The song "Just the Way You Are" is about a
man telling a woman how beautiful she is and how much he loves her for who she is, although she
does not believe him. The writers use repetition to present love for a woman. They choose to repeat
specific features of the woman that makes her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The basis of the song is to emphasize the love that the speaker has for the woman he is speaking
about. Hyperboles are an over exaggeration used to emphasize a comparison in literature. The
speaker says that when the woman smiles "the whole world stops and stares for a while"(17). This a
clear over exaggeration, as there is no possible way the whole world would know that she is smiling
and it is highly unlikely that everyone would stop and stare at her. The speaker says this to express
his love for her. When he says that "the whole world stops and stares for a while"(17), he actually
means his own personal world that revolves around his love "stops and stares for a while"(17). The
speaker uses a hyperbole to describe the importance that his love's smile has in his life

3 Am Poetic Devices
You did a great job of employing various poetic techniques throughout each of your poems. There
are some things I would recommend you take a second look at, but overall I thought each of your
pieces was pretty effective. I'm so happy you decided to include "Sugar" in this set of poems. I
really liked it when you read it aloud in class, and was pleased to have another chance to experience
it. I think the strongest aspect of this piece is your use of onomatopoeia and word choice to create a
rhythm and rhyme that truly embodies the monotony you describe. Also, the combination of
repetition and variation in the first two stanzas captures how you describe two very different ways of
experiencing one thing, sugar. One aspect of your poem which might ... Show more content on

I was unsure of its purpose at some points. However, when you wrote "Potent Night Dream Ghost" I
thought the capitalization truly enhanced the line. It gave importance to what you were talking
about, making it seem like more than an abstract concept, like a concrete, terrifying problem you
come face to face with. Still, I think the message of fear for these abstract concepts in general could
be presented more clearly if you included more concrete images in the poem. In discussing
"October", it is impossible not to bring up the phrase "bare and bleak,/ Broken..." I found these three
strong, meaningful words to be packed with a lot of emotion. They are essential to the desolate tone
and thus very important for such a short piece. Finally, "Chicago" was packed with sound imagery,
which was a refreshing change of pace from many other poems I've read. Not only did you provide
concrete details that made the poem memorable and relatable, but you did it in a less conventional
way than simple visual imagery. A criticism I must offer is that the conflicting images of "Your
fingers resting in mine" and "Hands inches from mine" were a bit confusing when I first read the
poem. Upon further examination I realized that the poem must be taking place over time and not just
in a single moment. Nevertheless, if other people also had a problem with the clarity of these lines,
it might be worth it to change them so that they do not

The Fruit That Ate Itself Poetic Devices
"The Fruit That Ate Itself," released in 1997, is an indie–rock song by the band Modest Mouse. In
the song, the lyrics are more spoken than sung over a musical arrangement. The song lyrics feature
many poetic devices and follows a rhyme scheme. Three major poetic devices used throughout the
song are theme, symbolism, and irony. First, the theme of the song is very apparent and reinforced
through many lines of the song. The main theme is: take life into your own hands and achieve your
life's purpose by yourself. One way this theme is shown is through the repetitive line, and part of the
title of the song, "Well, he taught the fruit how to eat itself. It was hanging out long out on the
shelf." To a human, the only function a fruit has in life is to be eaten. If the fruit can be taught "to eat
itself," it can accomplish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the lyrics in this song are not meant to be taken literally, they are meant to symbolize a
moral that is applicable to everyday life. One example is the line: "I take a drive in the wrong hand
lane." In literature, poetry, and music, life is often compared to a journey or driving on a road, like in
this case. Taking "a drive in the wrong hand land" references a person taking life into their own
hands, no matter the outcome. Another example is in the line: "Well, he taught the fruit how to eat
itself. It was hanging out long out on the shelf." This line symbolizes a person waiting for someone
else to come help them fulfill their goal. The fruit was "hanging out long out on the shelf" in the
same way a person might be described as "lying in wait." One last example is: "My hand, my hand
going to shake the same." This line also symbolizes accomplishing goals for oneself by comparing
shaking hands with other people to accepting help. The lyric poses a question about whether or not
the experience of achieving a goal will be as satisfying if a person needed assistance to get

Poetic Devices In The Raven
"The Raven", a ballad of eighteen six–line stanzas contains emphatic meter and rhymes. The ballad
is an anguishing narrative of a young man who, bereaved by the death of the woman he deeply
loved. He constructs a self–destructive meaning around a raven's repetition of the word
"Nevermore," as he despairs being reunited with his beloved Lenore, in the after life.
The first seven stanzas establish the setting and the narrator's state of mind. Weak and overwhelmed
with grief, the speaker tries to overshadow his sorrow by reading curiously obscure books. Narrated
in first person, the poem conveys the speaker's shift from weary, sorrowful composure to a state of
nervous demise as he recounts his strange experience with the mysterious black ... Show more

The raven's predictable answer provokes the grieving lover, now almost in a state of maddened
frenzy, to ask bluntly whether his soul would ever be reunited with Lenore in heaven. Receiving the
horrific "Nevermore" in reply to his ultimate question, the distraught narrator demands that the
raven, whether actual bird or fiend, leave his chambers and quit torturing his heart; the raven's
unendurable answer drives the bereaved lover into a state of maddened despair. The raven becomes
a permanent fixture in the room, a symbolic presence presiding over the narrator's self–inflicted
mental and spiritual collapse. "The Raven" is Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poem, not only
because of its immediate and continued popularity but also because Poe wrote "The Philosophy of
Composition," an essay reconstructing the step–by–step process of how he composed the poem as if
it were a precise mathematical problem. Discounting the role of serendipity, romantic inspiration, or
intuition, Poe accounted for every detail as the result of calculated effect. Although the essay may be
a tour de force, informed readers of the poem–from the nineteenth century French poets Charles
Baudelaire, Stéphane Mallarmé, and Paul Valéry to such twentieth

Comfortably Nab Poetic Devices
"Comfortably Numb" is a song that psychologically takes us into the world of the singer. The tone
of the song seems to be delirious yet remorse bitten where the person sings in a conversant and
soothing voice. It may be said that drug addiction indicates the background tone–drab but it's not
assertive. The lyrics seem to be in the form of a dramatic monologue where the second person's
existence is only felt because of the first person's engagement with him. The singer starts with a
"Hello" and inquires about the presence of someone in a non–descriptive house {Is there anyone
home?}. It feels as if someone who's really depressed and hurt, who hasn't been in human company
for months, comes out of his comfort hole and stands in front of the singer. The singer(speaker)
assures him that he could heal him but he needs some startup facts for his diagnosis. However he
realizes that his pain is an illusion. The singer can see his lips move but he's unable to hear him. He
relates this inability to the fever he once had as a child; when his hands had swollen up and it felt
completely numb. He feels the disorder is back again. The second person may be injected with a
medicine by the speaker who also feels that'll keep him "up ... Show more content on

The story of the song begins with how they came to the Land of the Free. The lyrics in the first
verse, "Man, I was brave, sailing on graves Don't think I didn't notice those tombstones disguised as
waves," and "We all came America trying to get a lap dance from Lady Freedom," shows how the
author understood the deep intentions of immigrants. Even though people do not come over to
America on ships anymore, he uses these words to compare the same dangers of coming to America.
Back then, ships would carry travelers over to the colonies and many people died sailing on the
ships, hence the phrase "tombstones disguised as waves." Those who came were brave and left

involves plenty of poetic devices. In Eminem's song the poetic devices allusion, rhyme, hyperbole
and metaphor are used to advance the theme "you will succeed if you never give up on your dream".

situation was, he did not stop there, he would not stop pushing until his dream became true. The

Lynch Song By Langston Hughes Poetic Devices
In the poem, "Lynching Song", a black man is being hanged by a group of white men. And although
he might have died, he states that the whit men are the ones who are really dead. The reader captures
the true meaning of the poem through the formal features that are being presented. In the five–stanza
poem, there are four lines in the first two stanzas; three in the next two, and the last stanza only has
one line. Not all the lines are the same beat either, in the first stanza the first two lines have four
beats and the next two lines have five beats. In the second stanza, the first line has three beats and
the following three lines have five beats. The third stanza has three consecutive four beat meters,
and the fourth stanza starts with three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the third stanza, the beat and rhythm change; in what it looks like a pause in the poem. The font
changes to italics and makes it sound like maybe a white person interrupted the poem, expressing
their confusion in the fact that "the white folks die." When the audience gets to the fourth stanza,
they notice how the beats decrease as each line is read, from three beats, to two, to one. Hughes is
purposely counting down to the last stanza, with the final words being "NOT I" in all caps. What
finale isn't big? But the reason why he stated "that black boy's still body says: NOT I" was because
even though the black man might have died, it is the white men who are really dead. They were the
ones who chose to do an immoral act, and in God's eyes the black man, who did no wrong, will go
to Heaven, while the white, cruel men will go to Hell. This poem shows how lynching is morally
wrong and anyone that takes part in it will be punished. It is challenging the conventional beliefs
about lynching because it is showing the white men that everyone has to answer to their
wrongdoings. Although the black man died, the true death is punishment from God for committing
horrific acts (in this case, lynching) during their

Hotel California Poetic Devices
In the Eagles' song, Hotel California, the speaker describes their freedom in California before
coming across this hotel with beautiful women. Unfortunately for him, everything was not as it
seems. The song is very light and cheerful in the beginning, hinting at themes of innocence.
Although later in the song, the hotel takes on a slightly darker look as the speaker discovers its real
purpose. In the song, Hotel California, the use of poetic devices to describe its themes of innocence
and desire become prevalent. The use of metaphors show how the incoming insanity has seeped into
the hotel through the song's theme of desire, whereas the imagery shows the speakers depth of
innocence in the beginning of the song. The poetic devices used throughout ... Show more content

The metaphors used in the song show this. In line twenty–seven, "Her mind is Tiffany–twisted,
[...]." This metaphor means that the woman is obsessed with desire for wealth; referring to her being
twisted by Tiffany and Co. which is a posh jewelry company. This metaphor's meaning is important
because its points back to theme of desire in which she is consumed by desire for wealth. In line
fifty–four, "And she said, 'We are all prisoners here, of our own device.'" This metaphor is straight–
forward as in the women staying at the hotel are prisoners to their wealth and desire. This metaphor
is also another example of theme of desire. The song itself is also a metaphor. The Hotel California
is not place, but it represents the California lifestyle and Hollywood industry with its desire for
riches and innocence when first arriving there. The pun on line twenty–eight again represents the
theme of desire. On line twenty–eight, "Mercedes bends." This clever pun could be seen as a
misspelling, but it's not. This pun means that the woman gets the bends (a type scuba–diving
sickness from surfacing too fast) from her Mercedes–Benz which means her world–view is distorted
by her greed for wealth. When the speaker first arrives at the

Poetic Devices In Pale Fire
"The long of the English alphabet... has for me the tint o weathered wood, but a French a evokes

of the intelligentsia in Russia, a trait that he subsequently gave his fictional narrators. Before the
Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Nabokov's father was a politician and member of the
"Constitutionalist Democratic Party, of which he was one of the founders" (28). The Constitutional
Democratic Party was made up of western–learning intellectuals and liberals who opposed the
educated elite–hating Bolsheviks; thus, Nabokov grew up in a cultured, western family, which can

but even a taste of this epic sentence demonstrates his inclination to write extremely long sentences
containing extremely short phrases. Sometimes, his short phrases become sentences – one word
sentences. Oftentimes these one or two word sentences are exclamations of some sort: "However!"
and "Some neighbors!" for example. Nabokov does not shy away from the exclamation point, using
it not just in one word phrases, but actual sentences as well. No wonder Updike said the Russian

The Cave Poetic Devices
The first poetic device present in Mumford and Sons' The Cave is imagery. Within the first two lines
of the song, detailed descriptions of the isolation and anger that the song portrays are felt. The band
states "It's empty in the valley of your heart / The sun, it rises slowly as you walk" (Mumford and
Sons, 1–2). This description of the heart being an empty valley demonstrates imagery as it allows
the audience to understand the pain and anger the person in the song feels, as they have been
isolated for so long. The second line describing the sun brings forth an image of the wisdom and
enlightenment that appears as the person becomes acclimated to the outside world. The image of the
sun rising slowly allows the audience to picture the person slowly gaining knowledge ... Show more

Again, in the second line, there is a metaphor along with the imagery present. The line "The sun, it
rises slowly as you walk" is a metaphor for the enlightenment of the person in the song as they come
to know a new and vast reality. Similar to the way the sun rises slowly, a person who has known
nothing but a cave for their entire life gains knowledge and becomes enlightened slowly. As this
person continues through life, or walks, as the line in the song states, they gain more knowledge,
just as the sun rises. Another metaphor in the song is "See the world hanging upside down" (30).
While the world is not literally hanging upside down, this is a metaphor for the change and
destruction the person will face upon leaving an isolated reality. It will seem as if the world is
flipped upside down because everything the person knows will seem to be backwards. Instead of
there being solely shadows on the wall, the world will be completely different and full of light,
which is why this metaphor is relevant. Mumford and Sons' uses metaphors to compare the changes
and enlightenment the person will face upon entering the outside world from their

Poetic Device Paper In the poem "After Making Love We Hear Footsteps", Galway Kinnell creates
the speaker in a way to really portray what he believes true love to be once "long–married". The
author gives great sensory details, engulfing you into the night that he produced from these fickle
meters. The speaker in the poem puts family high on this list of priorities as the author shows a
significant amount of importance to them from using a few clever poetic devices. Although Kinnell
could have put a little more thought into scansion to create even more of a deeper meaning, this
poem is very emotional and touching to the senses as well as giving great morality to what a man ...

Originality of the poem is derived from the fact that this poem is from a man's perspective, finding
love to be so blessing. It is usually the woman who becomes sentimental towards these types of
things, for women are typically more emotional of the two sexes. As I try not to stereotype men, in
today's society being an emotional man makes you less of one but, in the eyes of love, the man in
this poem does not seem to care. With morality taking control, the poem "After Making Love We
Hear Footsteps" tells a man what should be seen of love, the making of it and how children should
be made rather than a mistake or unwanted. Many men do not appreciate the genuine love of a
woman and children, nor do we see respect given to them or the idea of settling down and being
"long–married". Few men seem to see the blessing of making love and what it is for rather than just
the physical pleasure. Although the author doesn't give too much thought into letting the reader
know that the characters are in an outside world, he does include the universal baseball player to
place a reminder that in fact they are in a world, even if it's in a world of their own. The author
Galway Kinnell does not give enough attention to the scansion of the poem as the feet run from one
to nine meters. Yet this may make the reader notice the wide variety of feet in each meter,
comparing to them footsteps. Figuratively speaking, the husband doesn't mind drinking

Winter Song Poetic Devices
The Winter Song
When this work was assigned, I immediately chose the winter song Jingle Bell Rock. In my opinion,
this song sounds like a typical puertorican song. It is happier, with a lot of movement. I also like it

devices this song has.
The first poetic device that I found in the first line "Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock" (1).
Every time they say this line it means how much music there is in Christmas. Another poetic device
is "Jingle bells ring" (20). It means how the bells sound. In the analysis, I found how all the music in
christmas is related to the bells.

Katy Perry Poetic Devices
In 2013, Perry, Bonnie McKee, Dr Luke, Max Martin, and Cirkut composed a song entitled Roar. It
is a power pop song with lyrics centring on standing up for oneself and self–empowerment. It is a
statement by Perry of moving forward into the next stage of her life after the tumultuous end of her
marriage to Russell Brand. Many people use songwriting in order to overcome a situation in life.
One of the opening verses states 'I see it all, I see it now'. The author uses a hyperbole to capture the
emotion of the lyrics. Katy Perry understands now what she needs to do yet she does not exactly see
it all. 'I got the eye of the tiger' is the response to how she overcame great obstacles to achieve
greatness. Throughout the song the author uses many illusions like 'now I'm floating like a butterfly,
stinging like a bee' or you're gonna hear me roar Louder, louder than a lion'. The first illusion alludes
to the statement made by Muhammed Ali about his fighting style. Katy Perry implies that she's
effortless, however, packs a mean punch. In the second illusion, he author uses a metaphor. A
metaphor, like a simile, is a comparison between two unlike objects or ideas but does not use "like"

Wilfred Owen Poetic Devices

  • 1. Wilfred Owen Poetic Devices Wilfred Owen was a Teacher, Soldier, and Poet. He was born in 1893 in Oswestry, England. In 1911, he passed the entrance exam for University of London but could not afford it without a scholarship. In exchange for housing Owen became a vicar's assistant near Reading. He then attended the University of Reading studied there. When the war started, Owen was an English teacher in Bordeaux. He did not rush back to England to enlist but did enlist in June on 1916. In 1917, his service had led to shellshock and forced him to return home from the front. It was during this time he was being cared for in Craiglockhart hospital and met his friend and mentor Siegfried Sassoon and wrote most of his now well–known poems. This time away from the front and the then– experimental therapy being used at the hospital helped Owen recover enough to return to the front a year later. Owen and his men were an essential part of taking the Hindenburg line in 1918 and he was awarded the military cross. Sadly, little under a month later Owen was killed crossing a canal at Ors and only saw four of his poems published. The focus of this essay is to show how this amazing writer used poetic devices to tell people away from the front the horrors of war. Owen used many devices in his poetry and this essay will focus on three onomatopoeia, alliteration, and Simile. Owen used onomatopoeia in most of his poems. It is a useful way to describe the sounds of war, an example is in his poem Dulce Et Decorum Est it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Ee Cummings Poetic Devices People express their strong feelings in many ways, through actions, verbal or written words. American poet, E.E. Cummings found his way of conveying his feelings to the world through poems at a young age. Throughout his life, Cummings experienced many ups and downs; from affairs to wars. Cummings' unique style of poetry, filled with broken rules, strong emotions and literary elements communicates true feelings from the heart of Cummings from all that he experienced. His poem, "I Have Found What You Are Like", explores many of the poetic devices found in Cummings' style, interesting use of capitalization, punctuation and metaphors, that help to convey his feelings to his readers. Throughout his work, E.E. Cummings uses the visual effect of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cummings often used metaphors in his poems to cleverly express his feelings of both good and bad. Comparisons, metaphors or extended metaphors are seen throughout his work, most commonly comparing Cummings subjects to nature. By using metaphors throughout his poem, Cummings helps the reader understand what he is truly meaning, and how he may see things, as they differ for each person. In his poem "I Have Found What You Are Like", an extended metaphor is explored throughout his work, as Cummings compares this special someone to certain aspects in nature. He starts off his poem comparing the person as a whole, to a specific part of nature, "i have found what you are like/the rain". Though this statement could have been confusing, throughout the poem, he further elaborates his true intentions of comparing her to rain. After a subject change in the poem, Cummings specifically compares his feelings when his subject smiles as an "stirringofbirds between his arms". Hence more specifically explaining his heart beating fast by the coolness of her smile. This also makes the poem interesting as it keeps his theme of nature. In a separate poem, he again relates his subject to nature, stating, "it's you are whatever a moon has always meant/and whatever a sun will always sing is you". These two lines of his poem "[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]" explains to whoever this is written to that he is the light in his life, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Acquainted With The Night Poetic Devices In "Acquainted with the Night," by Robert Frost, a first person narrator wanders out of the night and then back again. During his dark and dim travels the man stops to listen to a cry from a distance. After his pause, the man continues on his journey, indifferent about the night. "Acquainted with the Night" contains many different poetic devices that help the continuity and theme flourish. Since this poem is a terza rima, it allows the reader to quickly and smoothly operate through the poem. The terza rima rhyme scheme offers a steady rhythm for the reader to follow along. Furthermore, the authors word choice of "saddest city lane," and "dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain," help to convey a facade of melancholiness and depression. However, lines like, "I have walked out in rain–– and back in rain," ultimately portray the underlying message of the poem. This poem resonates deeply with me because it offers a different perspective to any challenges and hard times a person can face. Throughout my sophomore and junior year of high school, my attitude towards life was not optimistic. I grew towards pessimism, and would simply go through my days waiting, begging for the day to be over. I, like the narrator, had "out walked the furthest city light." I can remember just sitting through one of Coach Day's math classes and closing my eyes, envisioning the 2:55 p.m announcements coming on, and knowing that I would be able to go home. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have been one acquainted with the night. are my absolute favorite because the author is flat out telling the reader that it is okay to struggle in life. The hardest blades truly are forged in the hottest flames, and this poem emphasizes how true that message is. "Acquainted with the Night" is much more than a poem. It is a mantra, a way of life. This poem can rid the blinding haze from one's eyes. A tiny dose of optimism can go along way––even "beyond the furthest city ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Feathers By Nujabes Poetic Devices The human voice is a powerful instrument that can be played by all and can spread a message, if not verbally, then demonstrated through our actions. What we say can be used to encourage as well as destroy. But, while seemingly ironic, being aware and listening to someone's silence and to what isn't said can be even more beneficial than what is. Through compassion and consideration, bettering one another's lives is the most important ability we have in life. To improve lives, awareness is one of the first steps. The song titled "Feather" by Nujabes epitomizes the idea that especially at times of ignorance, we reap our own consequences. In verse two, lines six and seven, the narrator dubs the news as propaganda for spreading hyperbolic messages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tone reinforces the message that helping others with their well–being in mind is the most important thing in life. Lyrically, this song has an optimistic tone despite the narrator encountering traces of hopelessness in the daily news. This is most evident in the chorus. The speaker decides to keep a positive outlook while riding an escalator, meaning they are moving forward and upward, both of which are used to describe rising above negativity to something that is greater, or better. Similarly, in verse three, it states "I will survive, divine the time to cry". It's reasonable that by "survive" the narrator means getting past the world's distressed state, while "divine the time to cry" means that they will find the time to mourn later on, but for now, they'll keep their composure. In both cases, the lyrics' tone encourages us to support fellow human beings as the narrator did mentally by not being brought down by negativity. The tune's serene musical tone reflects the peaceful message that the writer is trying to communicate. Between the twelfth and thirteenth lines in verse two, there is an audible shift in pitch and possibly tone. When the narrator begins about how stunned someone is as they are shot, it goes from the key peaceful tone in line twelve to a brief and more austere–sounding tone in the next line before reverting back. These details may have been intentional considering that death is a much grimmer subject. The once optimistic and peaceful tones suggest that positive sentiment should be extracted from the tune as opposed to harmful ones. Connecting back to the theme, the change in the musical tone represents the writer's recognition that our acts have outcomes (here, the voluntary action of shooting someone results in their death). Overall, the tone, lyrical and musical, further pushes how a positive outlook can correlate with a positive future and how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Drake Poetic Devices Teens and Young adults seem to frequently listen to music throughout the day. If it is not in the car while driving, it is while walking to class or just simply while doing homework. However, how many adolescents really pay attention to the meaning of the song or the poetic devices that are used throughout the song? Drake's song featuring Rhianna, Too Good, implies a message of love and explains how he tries his hardest to talk to Rhianna but she has seemed to have discovered herself without discovering their relationship; while they are conversing they are not understanding each other; throughout the song we see a pattern of similes, paradoxes, and imagery. In this song Drake uses the literary device simile. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A paradox is "a statement or proposition that seems self–contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth." (Dictionary.com) Throughout this song we see many examples of Paradoxes. He continually contradicts what he is saying. In the song he states "Got me on flights overseas, and I still can't get across to you." (Drake lines 27–28) Through this quote he uses a phrase that contradicts its self, by saying he is on flights overseas but still cannot get across to her which gives the meaning of him trying to talk to her but he still cannot get through to her. The Paradox allows the listener to realize how difficult it is for Drake to get across to Rhianna. He continues to try and reach her but it seems as if it were impossible for him. This is another one of the problems that he is facing with Rhianna and another reason to why he is so hopeless about their relationship. Another example of a Paradox that is found in the song would be "Free time is costing me more than it seems." (Drake 52) Similar to the line "Got me on flight overseas but I still can't get across to you" (Drake 27–28). Drake contradicts himself by saying that something that is supposed to be free is costing him. Through this line he is trying to emphasize how much free time she is costing him. It allows the listener to see how much Drake is putting into the relationship from his part. Making the listener ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Poetic Devices Poetic Devices in I'll Be Home For Christmas "I'll be home for Christmas" was written by Walter Kent and Buck Ram and is often referred to as the saddest and maybe the best Christmas song of all time. The song was first written in 1943 and was revised 1948. This definitely is one of the best and saddest christmas song. Other than its great music it uses many poetic devices like repetition, imagery and being a narrative. This essay will describe why the use of these poetic devices makes it such a great song. Kent and Ram used repetition to describe how much the person in the song craved being at home for Christmas. They first used it by saying "I'll be home for Christmas" (2:1) this helped us start thinking what it is this person wants. Kent and Ram then go on to say "Christmas Eve will find me" (3:1) making it easier to visualize or think that he is having trouble getting home but still keeps a positive mindset. Finally the song says " If only in my dreams' (3:4) which makes us realize that he won't be able to make it home for Christmas this year. And that he has been saying how much he wishes he could get home before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The imagery used in"I'll be home for Christmas" plays a big part in the being such a great song. Kent and Ram did an amazing job of using the imagery, they first used it when the song says "I'm dreaming of a place I love even more than i usually do" (1:1) this makes us imagine that he is far from a place he misses dearly. Another cause of it being used is " although it's a long road back I promise you I'll be home for Christmas" (1:3) this makes the reader/listener realize that the place he misses so dearly is his house and that he is promising to a loved one that he will make it in time for christmas. The last case of the use of imagery is seen in "find me where the love light beams" ( 3:2) and he is obviously telling his loved one that he won't be able to make it in time but that she may find him in her heart ... • 15. Butterfly Effect Poetic Devices The name of the song, Butterfly Effect, meaning the style of doors on his Lamborghini, sets the "rich" tone of the song. To start, he says, "Hidden Hills, deep off in the main". The term "hidden hills" really means a wealthy neighborhood in the hills of California where many celebrities live. Next, M&M's, sweet like candy cane, he is using simile to compare M&Ms to candy canes. Going back to the title of the song where he talks about his car, he also adds in the song, Bend laws, Bend lanes, is a metaphor meaning that he speeds in his expensive car, and gets caught by the police. • 17. Poetic Devices In Thou Blind Man's Mark Sidney uses many common poetic devices in Thou Blind Man's Mark, which help convey the his complex attitude toward desire, yet some are found to be a little more unusual. The beginning of each line begins with a single–syllable word, except for three. The words are simple and brief until line five in which he begins with "Desire, desire!" repeating it and utilizing an exclamation mark. Repetition is a form of grabbing the reader's attention so they can understand what they need to pay attention to, so as to understand the full meaning of the work. The last two lines both start with longer words, "Within" and "Desiring". Commencing a line using words with more syllables would allow readers to infer that they are of an increased importance. The choice of words is also fascinating: desire, within, and desiring again. Desire is often an emotion that leads to jealousy and envy, but perhaps the word "within" could mean that desire is really something one feels because they lack something within themselves. Desire is felt when one is not satisfied with who they are, but because no one is every truly satisfied with themselves, they will continue to desire again and again. ... Envy will not be the driving force to people trying to reach the greener grass. The desire to be like others and have what they have does not encourage people to improve themselves because they will never view themselves as perfect. In addition, Sidney described the desire and wants to be a web without an end. A spider web creates an image in the readers minds of circles spinning around and around with no conceivable end. In the story "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes, a woman loves a man so much that she dies for him. I think that this poem is a masterpiece because many people have enjoyed it for generations. A big part of what makes this poem a masterpiece are poetic devices. There are many poetic devices that this poem uses and they draw the reader in and make them interested in the poem. I'm glad that this poem uses the poetic devices that it uses because it makes the poem way better than it would've been if it hadn't used it. Australian Poetic Devices The main poetic device that I used in my poem was imagery, mainly to create an image in the audience's mind that Australia is the most perfect place in the world and that it can't be compared to any other place in the world. Instances where this happened were ... 'bright and radiant colours', 'deep sapphire sky' and 'dark and stormy clouds.' Another poetic devise that I used quite a bit was symbolism – 'the beauty makes me wonder why this place is not completely white and pink' because white symbolises purity and peace, and pink symbolises beauty. • 23. Poetic Devices In Annabel Lee Edgar Allan Poe's poem "Annabel Lee" deals with loss in the form of death. The speaker in the poem describes his love for Annabel Lee and then continues to describe how he has lost her. He is unable to let go of her and is overtaken by his grief. This sense of holding on is illustrated in the structure of the poem and the various poetic devices used in it. Edgar Allan Poe mainly employs both metrical and non–metrical elaborate sound patterns to convey the deep pain accompanied by loss. The poem begins by the speaker speaking of his lover, Annabel Lee. It takes the shape of a story and starts with the famous line used in fairytales and children's stories: "It was many and many a year ago" (Poe 1). This stanza does not bring up loss yet, but focuses on the maiden Annabel Lee, who "live[s] with no other thought than to love and be loved by [the speaker]" (Poe 4–5). The speaker addresses the reader when he introduces her and tells them that Annabel Lee is "a maiden...whom they may know" (Poe 3), and thus highlights her status in the speaker's life. This emphasis is supported by the enjambment between lines 3–4; line 3 ends on the word "know," which echoes the importance of Annabel Lee not only in the poet's life, but in the world. The ... Instead of letting go, he clings on to her by choosing to narrate the story of hear death in long sentences and a lengthy story. Harlem Renaissance Poetic Devices During the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes uses imagery, repetition, and simile in his poem, ¨Life is Fine¨ to demonstrate the condition of Black America in the early twentieth century. The first poetic device that demonstrates the condition of Black America in the early twentieth century is imagery. In his poem, ¨Life is Fine,¨ Langston Hughes writes, ¨But it was High up there! It was High!¨ (18). This imagery shows what life was like because Black Americans were high on top and felt like they couldn't climb down to the equal rights they deserved. • 27. The Tyger Poetic Devices William Blake's 1793 poem "The Tyger" has many interpretations, but its main purpose is to question God as a creator. Its poetic techniques generate a vivid picture that encourages the reader to see the Tyger as a horrifying and terrible being. The speaker addresses the question of whether or not the same God who made the lamb, a gentle creature, could have also formed the Tyger and all its darkness. This issue is addressed through many poetic devices including rhyme, repetition, allusion, and symbolism, all of which show up throughout the poem and are combined to create a strong image of the Tyger and a less than thorough interpretation of its maker. The first stanza directly addresses the Tyger, which is, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, "a large, carnivorous feline quadruped." It sets up the theme of night, along with which comes darkness and evil. The third and fourth lines ask the first of many repetitive and, in a sense, unanswerable questions: what kind of creator has the ability to make something with such "fearful symmetry" (4)? The second stanza moves on to ask the same question in a different format, inquiring where the Tyger came from: heaven or hell. Starting in line 9, the speaker uses powerful imagery to ask again what God could create the Tyger. The diction portrays the Tyger as evil, with a "twist[ed]" heart (10). Lines 13–16 make up the fourth stanza and compare the creator to a blacksmith. Lines 19 and 20 ask two questions that are different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Poetic Devices In Kubla Khan Introduction: S.T Coleridge's 'Kubla Khan' is a visionary poem of 54 lines, about the magical, mystical place, Xanadu where the heavenly paradise is overshadowed by a hint of evil. The poem has three types of poetic elements which will be discussed along with relevant examples. First, the poem is replete with powerful visual imagery which explains the theme and brings to life the vivid imagination of the poet. Second, sound has been used to convey not just motion and energy but also a musical effect due to the use of alliteration, assonance and anaphora. Third, the rhythm or the unusual rhyme scheme increases the creative impact of the poem. 'Kubla Khan' is an example of an imaginative, descriptive poem written in a drug–induced state of mind, ... When Coleridge wrote the poem, the first 36 lines were written in third person, in a trancelike state where he describes a grandiose palace with miles of surrounding countryside. The rest of the poem was written in first person after a visitor interrupted him causing him to lose his train of thought so that he could no longer recollect the dream in totality. There are four ways in which rhythm has been effectively utilized though the poem does not follow a traditional pattern. First, the meter or pattern of stressed, i.e. long and unstressed, i.e. short syllable changes throughout the poem. Iambic tetrameter has been used in the first stanza, in lines 1 to 4, for e.g. ... • 31. Poetic Devices In The Raven The poem I decided to explicate was "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. The reason I chose this poem is because I love Edgar Allen Poe's writings. I have always loved reading his dark and twisted poems, even when I was younger in middle school his poems always got my attention the most. I had never read "The Raven" until now, but I am familiar with some of his others like "The Tell–Tale Heart." I did really enjoy reading "The Raven", the actual raven was a little creepy, but I also like to read poems with elements like that. In the first stanza there are two types of poetic devices used, one of them is the use of alliteration which is found very prominent throughout the entire poem. Some uses of alliteration that are found in the first stanza are "while I pondered, weak and weary" or "while I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,/ as of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door." The whole first stanza is pretty much an example alliteration because of how every word starts with the same letter or sounds closely alike. Then the second type of poetic device used was the use of foreshadowing. Poe uses foreshadowing when says there is a visitor tapping on his door as if something bad is going to happen. In the second stanza Poe still uses alliteration, though not as strongly as in the first stanza. Some examples of alliteration used in the second stanza were found in the lines, "Eagerly I wished the morrow;–vainly I had sought to borrow from my books ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night By Dylan Thomas Written by Dylan Thomas, the poem "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" was published in 1951, two years before his early death at age 39. Referred to as a villanelle, this poem contains five three lined stanzas and one four lined stanza. In the first stanza, the unrevealed speaker is telling an unknown person not to give into death peacefully, but to fight against it as he or she expresses, "rage, rage against the dying of the light" (line 3). In this first stanza, Thomas uses a metaphor to compare dying of the light to death. In the next stanza, the speaker acknowledges that "wise men" near death know that their death is inevitable because "their words had forked no lightning," but still encourages them not to give into death (4–5). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To illustrate, anaphora, which is the repetition of a word or phrase, is identified through the repeated use of "do not go gentle into that good night" (1,6,12,18). Similarly, Thomas also repeats the phrase "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" to create the same effect (3,9,15,19). Given that the poem is a villanelle, by definition, it follows a pattern in which the first and third lines are alternated at the end of the stanzas and both repeated at the end of the last stanza. By way of repetition, Thomas seems to be emphasizing the message the lines express, which is to not die peacefully but to fight against death, showing an unwillingness to give up. The repetition and strict structure by which the poem follows also helps the poem flow and sound pleasing to the ears (euphony). Furthermore, Thomas repeats this message, but with each stanza he applies it to a new subject: "wise men...good men...wild men...grave men...my father" (4,7,10,13,16). Interestingly, by changing the subject, Thomas gives the impression that the message is meant for all people, no matter what they are dealing with or who they may be. In addition, Thomas uses exact rhyme to help with flow and unity between the stanzas. For example, the two repeated phrases rhyme with "night" and "light," while the middle lines of the tercets rhyme with "day" and "they" (1–3,5–6,9,12,15,18–19). By staying true to the strict villanelle form, the five three lined stanzas follow an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Juxtaposition In William Gibson's Poetic Devices Gibson uses various poetic devices to create an effective, mysterious poem. In this essay, I will describe the devices, and the way he uses them to create mystery. The poet uses juxtaposition by various devices, personification and alliteration. Gibson uses juxtaposition to compare the difference between the journey on the investigator's boat, and the actual island. On the journey, the weather 'broke blue and bright', however on the island it is 'ghastly in the cold sunlight'. In my first piece of evidence, the poet uses alliteration of the 'b' sound, which is pleasant and easy to say, making it feel friendly, however 'cold sunlight' is an oxymoron, making it seem as if, on the island, even the sun feels cold and unwelcoming. The difference in the environments happens so suddenly, the reader feels unfamiliar and disorientated due to the change in environments. This use of alliteration and an oxymoron in conjunction creates a strong contrast, also known as juxtaposition. These poetic devices makes the reader feel unfamiliar, and disorientated, causing the reader to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 41. Poetic Devices In Jim Stevens's 'Schizophrenia' In Jim Stevens poem "Schizophrenia" (Pg. 115) He uses a house as a catalyst to describe the feelings of schizophrenia by using several poetic devices. He does not follow a set meter or rhyme scheme making this a free verse poem aiding in the delivery of emotion. The theme of the poem is anger with bleak and chaotic also being able to describe what he feels with words such as suffered, slamming, and angry being used throughout the poem. Reading and narrating the poem a feeling of disorganization and unpleasant is present as one would imagine a person suffering from schizophrenia would undergo. The impression the poem leaves is a battle being raged amongst many coming through the eyes of one person. The house represents the brain with the other events going on being emotions, relationships, or even synapsis and different areas of the brain firing neurons causing certain sentiments. He achieves this by using poetic devices such as personification, allegory, imagery, metaphors, and symbol. The poem is littered throughout with examples of personification and metaphors as personifications can be said to be a type of metaphor. Cases of this can be seen in each stanza such as in stanza one with the poem stating, "It was the house that suffered most" (Stevens 1) showing the house having human emotions. In Stanza two another instance is "The house came to miss the shouting voices" (Stevens 9). The personification isn't limited to just the house, Stevens also personifies rooms in stanza three writing "rooms declared their loyalties" (13). By understanding what schizophrenia is, the challenge of finding meaning to these examples is simplified. Schizophrenia is defined as "a mental disorder that is characterized by disturbances in thought, perception, and behavior" (Merriam–Webster). It can then be inferred that the house acts as the brain as schizophrenia is a mental disorder, while the rooms could be different people the person hears, each retreating to their section or "loyalties. These instances of personification provide images that the reader can draw upon and Stevens provides even more powerful imagery throughout the poem. As the reader recites the poem a vivid image of a dull house with inhabitants that do not get ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. She Walks In Beauty Poetic Devices Throughout time, love has proven to be one of the strongest motivators of mankind. It has served as the motivation for both war and peace. One of the greatest contributions love has made to mankind is that of art. Poetry and music are methods of art that people use to express love. These methods are effective because of the poetic devices they use to describe love. In both the love poem "She Walks in Beauty" by Lord Byron and the love song "Just the Way You Are" by Khari Cain, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Bruno Mars, and Khalil Walton poetic devices are used to describe love for a woman. While Cain, Lawrence, Levine. Mars, and Walton in"Just the Way You Are" use hyperbole and repetition to express love in their song, Lord Byron in"She Walks in Beauty" more effectively uses simile and juxtaposition express love in his poem. The song "Just the Way You Are" is about a man telling a woman how beautiful she is and how much he loves her for who she is, although she does not believe him. This a clear over exaggeration, as there is no possible way the whole world would know that she is smiling and it is highly unlikely that everyone would stop and stare at her. There are some things I would recommend you take a second look at, but overall I thought each of your pieces was pretty effective. I'm so happy you decided to include "Sugar" in this set of poems. I really liked it when you read it aloud in class, and was pleased to have another chance to experience it. I think the strongest aspect of this piece is your use of onomatopoeia and word choice to create a rhythm and rhyme that truly embodies the monotony you describe. Also, the combination of repetition and variation in the first two stanzas captures how you describe two very different ways of experiencing one thing, sugar. One aspect of your poem which might ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was unsure of its purpose at some points. However, when you wrote "Potent Night Dream Ghost" I thought the capitalization truly enhanced the line. It gave importance to what you were talking about, making it seem like more than an abstract concept, like a concrete, terrifying problem you come face to face with. Still, I think the message of fear for these abstract concepts in general could be presented more clearly if you included more concrete images in the poem. In discussing "October", it is impossible not to bring up the phrase "bare and bleak,/ Broken..." I found these three strong, meaningful words to be packed with a lot of emotion. They are essential to the desolate tone and thus very important for such a short piece. Finally, "Chicago" was packed with sound imagery, which was a refreshing change of pace from many other poems I've read. Not only did you provide concrete details that made the poem memorable and relatable, but you did it in a less conventional way than simple visual imagery. A criticism I must offer is that the conflicting images of "Your fingers resting in mine" and "Hands inches from mine" were a bit confusing when I first read the poem. Upon further examination I realized that the poem must be taking place over time and not just in a single moment. Nevertheless, if other people also had a problem with the clarity of these lines, it might be worth it to change them so that they do not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the song, the lyrics are more spoken than sung over a musical arrangement. The song lyrics feature many poetic devices and follows a rhyme scheme. Three major poetic devices used throughout the song are theme, symbolism, and irony. First, the theme of the song is very apparent and reinforced through many lines of the song. The main theme is: take life into your own hands and achieve your life's purpose by yourself. One way this theme is shown is through the repetitive line, and part of the title of the song, "Well, he taught the fruit how to eat itself. It was hanging out long out on the shelf." Most of the lyrics in this song are not meant to be taken literally, they are meant to symbolize a moral that is applicable to everyday life. One example is the line: "I take a drive in the wrong hand lane." In literature, poetry, and music, life is often compared to a journey or driving on a road, like in this case. Taking "a drive in the wrong hand land" references a person taking life into their own hands, no matter the outcome. Another example is in the line: "Well, he taught the fruit how to eat itself. It was hanging out long out on the shelf." This line symbolizes a person waiting for someone else to come help them fulfill their goal. The fruit was "hanging out long out on the shelf" in the same way a person might be described as "lying in wait." One last example is: "My hand, my hand going to shake the same." The raven becomes a permanent fixture in the room, a symbolic presence presiding over the narrator's self–inflicted mental and spiritual collapse. "The Raven" is Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poem, not only because of its immediate and continued popularity but also because Poe wrote "The Philosophy of Composition," an essay reconstructing the step–by–step process of how he composed the poem as if it were a precise mathematical problem. Discounting the role of serendipity, romantic inspiration, or intuition, Poe accounted for every detail as the result of calculated effect. When the audience gets to the fourth stanza, they notice how the beats decrease as each line is read, from three beats, to two, to one. Hughes is purposely counting down to the last stanza, with the final words being "NOT I" in all caps. What finale isn't big? But the reason why he stated "that black boy's still body says: NOT I" was because even though the black man might have died, it is the white men who are really dead. They were the ones who chose to do an immoral act, and in God's eyes the black man, who did no wrong, will go to Heaven, while the white, cruel men will go to Hell. • 63. The Cave Poetic Devices The first poetic device present in Mumford and Sons' The Cave is imagery. Within the first two lines of the song, detailed descriptions of the isolation and anger that the song portrays are felt. The band states "It's empty in the valley of your heart / The sun, it rises slowly as you walk" (Mumford and Sons, 1–2). This description of the heart being an empty valley demonstrates imagery as it allows the audience to understand the pain and anger the person in the song feels, as they have been isolated for so long. The second line describing the sun brings forth an image of the wisdom and enlightenment that appears as the person becomes acclimated to the outside world. The image of the sun rising slowly allows the audience to picture the person slowly gaining knowledge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Again, in the second line, there is a metaphor along with the imagery present. The line "The sun, it rises slowly as you walk" is a metaphor for the enlightenment of the person in the song as they come to know a new and vast reality. Similar to the way the sun rises slowly, a person who has known nothing but a cave for their entire life gains knowledge and becomes enlightened slowly. As this person continues through life, or walks, as the line in the song states, they gain more knowledge, just as the sun rises. Another metaphor in the song is "See the world hanging upside down" (30). While the world is not literally hanging upside down, this is a metaphor for the change and destruction the person will face upon leaving an isolated reality. It will seem as if the world is flipped upside down because everything the person knows will seem to be backwards. Instead of there being solely shadows on the wall, the world will be completely different and full of light, which is why this metaphor is relevant. Mumford and Sons' uses metaphors to compare the changes and enlightenment the person will face upon entering the outside world from their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Poetic Device Paper Karah Joye Corbin Lockmiller 1302 English 18 July, 2013 Poetic Device Paper In the poem "After Making Love We Hear Footsteps", Galway Kinnell creates the speaker in a way to really portray what he believes true love to be once "long–married". The author gives great sensory details, engulfing you into the night that he produced from these fickle meters. The speaker in the poem puts family high on this list of priorities as the author shows a significant amount of importance to them from using a few clever poetic devices. Although Kinnell could have put a little more thought into scansion to create even more of a deeper meaning, this poem is very emotional and touching to the senses as well as giving great morality to what a man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Originality of the poem is derived from the fact that this poem is from a man's perspective, finding love to be so blessing. It is usually the woman who becomes sentimental towards these types of things, for women are typically more emotional of the two sexes. As I try not to stereotype men, in today's society being an emotional man makes you less of one but, in the eyes of love, the man in this poem does not seem to care. With morality taking control, the poem "After Making Love We Hear Footsteps" tells a man what should be seen of love, the making of it and how children should be made rather than a mistake or unwanted. Many men do not appreciate the genuine love of a woman and children, nor do we see respect given to them or the idea of settling down and being "long–married". Few men seem to see the blessing of making love and what it is for rather than just the physical pleasure. Although the author doesn't give too much thought into letting the reader know that the characters are in an outside world, he does include the universal baseball player to place a reminder that in fact they are in a world, even if it's in a world of their own. The author Galway Kinnell does not give enough attention to the scansion of the poem as the feet run from one to nine meters. Yet this may make the reader notice the wide variety of feet in each meter, comparing to them footsteps. Figuratively speaking, the husband doesn't mind drinking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Winter Song Poetic Devices The Winter Song When this work was assigned, I immediately chose the winter song Jingle Bell Rock. In my opinion, this song sounds like a typical puertorican song. It is happier, with a lot of movement. I also like it because of all the poetic devices that the song has. I will be showing you some of these poetic devices this song has. The first poetic device that I found in the first line "Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock" (1). Every time they say this line it means how much music there is in Christmas. Another poetic device is "Jingle bells ring" (20). It means how the bells sound. In the analysis, I found how all the music in christmas is related to the bells. Also another poetic device is "Snowing and blowing" (3). They use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Poetic Devices In 'Acquainted With The Night' Poetic Devices in "Acquainted with the Night" In the poem, "Acquainted with the Night", Robert Frost speaks of wandering the city at night. He speaks of the night like a friend, but in reality he is friendless. Through his use of hyperboles and imagery, the author provides an in–depth look of what he feels and experiences at night. Robert Frost uses hyperboles to exaggerate how he feels about the city at night. In line 4, the author says," I have looked down the saddest city lane." • 73. Katy Perry Poetic Devices In 2013, Perry, Bonnie McKee, Dr Luke, Max Martin, and Cirkut composed a song entitled Roar. It is a power pop song with lyrics centring on standing up for oneself and self–empowerment. It is a statement by Perry of moving forward into the next stage of her life after the tumultuous end of her marriage to Russell Brand. Many people use songwriting in order to overcome a situation in life. One of the opening verses states 'I see it all, I see it now'. The author uses a hyperbole to capture the emotion of the lyrics. Katy Perry understands now what she needs to do yet she does not exactly see it all. 'I got the eye of the tiger' is the response to how she overcame great obstacles to achieve greatness. Throughout the song the author uses many illusions like 'now I'm floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee' or you're gonna hear me roar Louder, louder than a lion'. The first illusion alludes to the statement made by Muhammed Ali about his fighting style. Katy Perry implies that she's effortless, however, packs a mean punch. In the second illusion, he author uses a metaphor. A metaphor, like a simile, is a comparison between two unlike objects or ideas but does not use "like" or "as". Here Katy Perry is comparing her roar (voice) to being louder than a roar of a lion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She was scared to stand up for what she believed in.
