Ethos, Logos And Symbology
"Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are modes of persuasion used to convince audiences." In the video, "Breaking News: Some Bullshit Happening
Somewhere", uses Pathos very well by provoking the audience to laugh and feel sorry for the residents. The actual "Bullshit", is the language given
by the news anchors and how careless the "somewhere" is to have a bear loose. The language actually pulls readers in and some find it funny rather
than inappropriate. There were no facts included in the video, so there's no Logos represented. As for Ethos, the video doesn't have an appropriate
language especially for the age group that watches the news, concluding the audience doesn't have trust in the author/ video. In the video,

THESIS: In Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" vivid imagery is utilized through ethos, logos, and pathos in an attemt to sway
the acts of sinners to be morally correct."
Jonathan Edward, an American theolagian and central figure in the awakening during the 1800's, was mostly known for leadning the great awakning
and his strong belief in hell: a very common topic during his time. In his sermon " sinners in the hands of an angry god," preached on July 8, 1741 in
Enfield, Connecticut. Edward emphasizes gods power and how easy it is for god to drop you in hell, so therfore you should do everyhting you can to
get on his good side.
"Sinners in the hands of an angry god" is a sermon written by Jonathan Edwards, an American theolagian. The sermon was preached during the periode
of great awakening when it was a time of religiouse revival. The Great Awakening was essentially a spiritual awakening of different religious groups in
thethirteen colonies of America in the 18th century. While before the people were more static and somberin their approach toreligion, when the
Awakening began they started to be more emotional, so they could feel a greater connection to God. After the Glorious Revolution of... Show more

Using pathos connects with the reader or listener emotionally, sometimes making them feel that the speech is being directed to them personally. The
use of ethos is critical because in order for edwards audience to take him seriously, they must respect him and agree that he is worth listening to.
Finally, the use of logos in edwards preach is important because facts are needed in order to make a valid position and point. Opinion is great, but
the readers and listeners need to know the facts in order to listen and agree to edward ethically and emotionally. Ethos, logos, and pathos in edwards
sermon are all equally important and all work

Being homeless is found all around the world in every country. Either the people lost their house due to weather, money, or even being kicked out,
being without a home is something no one should have to go through. While the Habitat for Humanity advertisement is lengthy, I argue that the
advertisement effectively convinces the audience to join by donating, advocating, or volunteering through its use of logos, pathos, and ethos.
One of the very first people we met at the beginning of the advertisement is a girl, later we learn her name to Pheeyo Aung, talking about living in
a garage. This specific part of the video shows how logos is being used. By telling us about her living conditions before by showing us pictures of
her family. She even tries not to cry while trying to talk about wanting to have a real living space and get out of the garage she was in. Although she
was very emotional during this section of the advertisement, the audience see what she was really living like. We get a feel of how she was living,
and it was not something she was just told to say.
The video also shows us some statistics of Housing problem. Again, showing the use of logos by giving us numbers to visually see now and for the
future. These statistics included how just in America alone, there is a 33% of housing problem. And more than one billion people in the world live in
"housing slums". They also show us a visual graph of the world filling up to 32 percent to show the housing problem in the

Texting And Driving Logos
Texting and driving is more dangerous than it seems, taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds anything can happen. Many innocent
lives have been taken by distracted driving. The Public Service Announcement "Don't text and drive", displays a teenage girl driving in the car
with some friends. The girl then receives a text from her mother that reads "You know when you'll be back tonight?" As the girl proceeds to text
back she doesn't realize she begins drifting into the oncoming traffic lane, where a young lady is driving with her two children. Before the two cars
collide, time stops and the drivers get out to conversate. Once they get back in time begins to move again and the cars wreck. In the PSA "Don't text
and drive" Produced by TranterGrey Media, pathos stood out over ethos and logos. Pathos is used more effectively element in this video.
First the PSA illustrates pathos more than ethos or logos, because before the cars collided time froze and both drivers get out and discuss what is
about to happen. During this conversation, the older woman asks the teenage girl did she know that she is in her lane and if she is texting. The
teenage girl responds "I was just checking in with my mom. I was telling her, I thought I would be home by six". The older woman then states "It's
okay there's enough time, just pay attention." The girl quotes "I'm not even halfway through the text, there is no way! I'm not going to look up". The
older woman cries "my babies are in the

Texting And Driving Logos
Every American in the U.S has an addiction of being on a phone while driving. The Public Service Announcement (PSA), "The Danger of Texting
& Driving" presents an American teenager texting and driving. This PSA shows and explains what can happen when a person is in a vehicle and
on a mobile device. As mentioned previously this video demonstrates what consequences can happen as a result of any American simply looking
at his or her phone while driving. However, this short video also can teach and demonstrate why anyone should not get on anything that will cause
a distraction to the person who is operating the vehicle. In the PSA, "The Danger of Texting and Driving" filmed by Blue Lobster Productions, the
video uses pathos which overshadows both ethos and logos regarding the subject of texting and driving. Although, in this PSA, the use of pathos
is more effective than of the other two ethos and logos. Watching this short video of "The Danger of Texting & Driving, the audience observes a
typical day of a teenage man tying his shoes, and a small child kicking a soccer ball. The intended audience may feel more sympathy for the kid,
because of what is going to occur next, and of the innocent expression on his face, as he was kicking the soccer ball around. While the teenage boy
was driving, he suddenly got a text message from his friend. The use of foreshadowing allowed the audience to guess of what was about to happen
next. Not knowing the boy was kicking the soccer ball around

Creating A Good And Memorable Logo
Just assuming, when most people think of logo design, the image probably goes something like this. A scruffy man, with a graphic T–shirt is sitting in
front of a Macintosh computer monitor, with Photoshop open and putting the final touches on the changes of a logo he found in Google images. This
scenario, however plausible sounding, is usually incorrect. There are many different and complicated steps that go into creating a logo, and even more
steps that go into making a good one. Drafts upon drafts, with variations upon variations, with different color swatches and different color schemes, and
dozens of meetings, with panels of people, with all different preferences and hopeful intentions–who knew all these different aspects went into ... Show

They could fire up their laptop and Google, 'steps of designing a logo,' and they would be faced with a promising list of results, where one of the

simple steps and guidelines. There are some helpful tips such as "a logo must be simple, ... memorable, ... enduring, ... versatile, ... and
appropriate" (Cass), and these are all aspects that graphic designers consider in the first drafts of a logo. However, if the business owner doesn't
understand the reasoning and intentions behind certain decisions that designers make, then it is unlikely that an effective logo will be created.
Keeping with the business owner's journey to create a good logo, the owner would probably unintentionally create a logo that fits in perfectly with
the current trend of their culture, but that would be a mistake. The outcome of a company's popularity relies heavily on how well their logo can
stand the test of time. If the logo doesn't need to be changed every couple of months to keep up with the trends, the easier it will be for the logo to
become easily recognizable. A good logo doesn't have to be flashy; actually some of the most memorable logos in history have been the simplest ones
yet.

Tacoos And Logos In Advertising
Do you recognize any of these images? I know I do. Nike, Taco Bell, Target. But what do all of these pictures have in common?
All of these images are logos. No, not the kind of logos that we learn about in English each year, instead, these are images that each respective
company has chosen to stand as an easy symbol that consumers will recognize whenever they see it. Usually, along with a short slogan. You know
what I mean: Live Mas, Just Do It, I'm Lovin' It.
But did you know that these companies have been conditioning you your entire life without you knowing to recognize and buy their products? It's true.

Companies have been tricking our brains for decades– through the use of other practices, maybe, but it's still the same thing. Right? Or has
Neuromarketing crossed the line? And if it has, how do we know? My solution is to be aware. Did you know that many supermarkets use the smell
of freshly baked bread to encourage bread sales? And fast food restaurants are designed to have bright lighting and uncomfortable seating to encourage
customers to eat and get out of there fast, making room for the next customers? Well, the goal here is to know and be aware of this. That way, if we

I find logos from the text, it is in the beginning of the text. The author talks about how many books that her writes and it also has specific years and
name on the text. In my opinion, the most obvious example of the ethos is the sentences that the author's writing, because the author is the
professional person in the writing area, so that I think she has the power to let reader believes what she said and what she think. There also have
some instances to firm the main idea. In the third paragraph, the author uses the feeling of people to represent sometimes people wants to be the
person like them, for example "people tend to look at ...... they have to tell" some of people desire to be the writer because they think they can get lots
of money.

Differentiation, symbolism and easy to remember are the requirements to be met by a good logo design. In addition to adapting to different uses, such

Rhetoric in Videos
Rhetoric is defined as the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.
It is used to persuade an audience. According to Michael Austin in Reading the World: Ideas That Matter (661,664), Aristotle has three elements to
persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is not just appealing to ethics, but it is establishing the speaker's credibility and character. Pathos is an
appeal to emotion to persuade an audience of something. Logos is an appeal to logic with things like facts and research. Any speaker that wants to
persuade an audience to believe something should have an equal amount of all three elements. In the three videos, the speakers use ... Show more

That video seemed to build credibility at the beginning through the news room background but lost the credibility, in my eyes, through the
offensive language used by multiple people in the video. Also the credibility was lost when the "news anchor" did not seem too interested in
talking about the topic by saying things like "a desperate attempt". Also one of the "witnesses" says "I'm an older man, so you can trust what I
say", to try to build his personal credibility. There is also a expert mentioned to assist the speaker to help persuade his audience while making his
point. Personally, I did not find any pathos in the video, but did spot some logos. There were a couple of graphs shown, which shows a sign of fact in
the video, but they didn't help the speaker and his point because his credibility was destroyed by the language

Example Of Ethos Pathos Logos
In accounts of true crime seen today, rhetoric is often used to impact readers and how they receive the information presented in the article or given
argument. The use of rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos ensures that the information appeals to not only one area of communication,
and effectively gets across to the intended audience.
Bianca Roberson was an 18 year old girl who was recently killed by David Desper in a road rage incident.
The article, written by Lydia O'Connor recounts the events of the murder, including details on how Bianca was killed. O'Connor's writing includes
examples of pathos, and logos, making it an effective form of communication to her readers. The first example of pathos is shown when O'Connor
includes a background on the victim. She states that Bianca "was headed to Florida's Jacksonville University in the fall", and as readers, we
sympathize with this not only because we realize how young she really was at the time of her brutal death, but also because it becomes so clear how
quickly her future was taken away from her. By including details about Bianca's future, the author gives a very specific piece of information that, in
turn, appeals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
O'Connor includes the source of her data in the form of Tom Hogan. The information about the incident is known to be reliable as Tom Hogan is the

what he bases his career off of. We as readers are also able to infer that O'Connor's information from Hogan is accurate as she provides a link to the
press conference in which he presented information on the murder. Although only one appeal of ethos is presented in the article, it proves to be
sufficient, as Tom Hogan is an individual with clear authority on the

has done so by saying " Skip the hamburgers at the frozen arches and head to Wendy's." Saying this in the commercial can effect people by
effecting their emotions. Wendy's did so by making McDonald's sound like all of there food is frozen and it is never fresh because they said to
stay away from the frozen arches instead of the real name the golden arches. After Wendy's made those remarks about McDonald's, Wendy's went
right back into effecting people's emotions, the commercial showed a real juicy burger zoomed into the camera so you would see how delicious
the burger looked. Also by saying "to come over to Wendy's and try a Dave's double." since that is the last thing really said in the commercial the
image of the burger and the text saying to come to Wendy's will stay in your head. This is also another way Wendy's to persuade people by using

Use Of The Greek Word Logos
My word study will focus on the use of the Greek word logos in the opening section of the John, namely 1:1–14. The word is used in a couple of
remarkable ways in this passage, namely because it is personified and associated with God and his creative work. Furthermore, this logos is said to
take on flesh and dwell with humans and to enlighten all of existence. We are also told that, although the vast majority of men reject this logos in
flesh, a handful do accept him. These experience transformation and are no longer considered to be born of natural descent, but to be children of
God. Greek Usage The Greek word logos has the general meaning of "word," "statement," "utterance," discourse," "meaning," "matter" or
"reckoning." A derivation of lego, it appears as early as the works of Homer. It began to be used in a philosophical context in 500 B.C. by Heraclitus,
who used it to express an instrument of thought that expresses the thought itself and its conclusion. As a concept logos was used to include any
information given by the senses, and the underlying principle that related objects to each other in a sort of universal law. However, for other
philosophers the word could be used in different ways. For instance, Parmenides used the word to express pure thought apart from the 1 senses. The
Stoic philosophers used the term in a very different way, giving it the meaning of rhetorical and argumentative ability for an individual. By the third
century the term began

The Rhetorical Triangle: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos
Persuasion is the key to getting the results you want, not only for politicians or lawyers, but for every one of us. In a job interview, you will have to
persuade your interviewers why they should hire you over the other candidates. In a classroom presentation you will have to convince your classmates
and teacher that what you're saying is worth listening to and that you deserve a good grade on the assignment.
Every speech or presentation is persuasive to some degree. If you're trying to get listeners to accept your point of view, you're trying to persuade them.
Even if you are delivering an informative speech, you're giving your audience the impression that what you're saying is correct. And that too, is a form
of persuasion.

Pathos appeals to the emotions and the sympathetic imagination, as well as to beliefs and values. Pathos can also be thought of as the role of the
audience in the argument. People often shy away from using emotion in public speaking, thinking that it's inappropriate or unprofessional. Nothing
could be further from the truth!
Logos appeals to reason. Logos can also be thought of as the text of the argument, as well as how well a speaker has argued his/her point. Audiences

Ethos Pathos Logos
Logos, ethos, and pathos are essential components used in advertising. By learning to recognize logos, ethos, and pathos in advertising, we are able to
understand the message and what is being portrayed. (Albert et al, 2014), suggested that Aristotle postulated that a speaker's ability to effectively
convince an audience is constructed on how well the speaker appeals to that audience in three different areas: logos, ethos, and pathos. These appeals
together form what Aristotle calls a rhetorical triangle.

The reason for this is that from the advertisement one could sense an appeal to our sense of identity, self–interest and emotions. It added some amount
of excitement and humor. A positive image was created from the video about the Papa John's Pizza and it really made me feel persuaded to buy the
pizza. The video Michelin Commercial 1993 also depicted pathos. Despite, the bad weather and icy roads the baby was still safe and going about his
business. This video was done in such a way that it created a feeling of confidence and intrigue in the brand of Michelin tires. The video appealed to
my emotion of safety and well–being. As a result of this it increased the power of what the message is saying.
The video entitled Army Strong depicted a combination of all three appeal. From the video logos was being portrayed as the video was typically
marked by facts and data. The information was quite quantifiable and would enable one to make a rational decision about serving in the army. In
portraying the pathos persuasion, the advertisement succeeded in lowering the often–perceived risk persons have of joining the army. As it relates to
the ethos persuasion, the advertisement painted the United States Army as an entity that builds strong character, garners respect from the public and
provides an avenue for career advancement. This essence was painted in my mind through the convincing data

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
From this course, I learned many different concepts. The one that I feel will contribute the most to my life outside of this class would be pathos, ethos,
and logos. Persuasion is something that most people deal with often. Pathos, ethos, and logos are something that has a significant role in persuasion.
Pathos are used to appeal to emotions of the person. Using pathos to persuade someone you want to convince them with an emotional response.
These may make your paper more effective, because if it has anything to do with their emotions it will make them more interested in what you have
to say. An example of pathos would be "If we don't move soon, we're all going to die! Can't you see how dangerous it would be to stay?" This shows
that if someone told you this it would affect how you felt about staying. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By using ethos, you are letting your audience know that what you are saying is true and not just what you want them to believe. An example of ethos
would include something like "As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely produce the best results." When you hear
that someone is a doctor, it makes you trust them when they are telling you anything about helping solve anything wrong with your body.
Logos is a way of persuading your audience by logic. When using logos, you are persuading your audience more by reason. Using reason for
persuading is when the persuader makes it seem like what they are persuading you is the best option. An example of logos would be "You don't
need to jump off a bridge to know that it's a bad idea. Why then would you need to try drugs to know if they're damaging?" This would show you that
it is common sense that doing drugs is bad, so don't try it to see if it is

As well about half the students did not take us seriously. So with those in mind we had to build up our credibility. In the beginning of the year we
had to start with factual pieces which we brought the students peers to react to videos like the iPhone 6 plus bend test in which I was in charge of.
We got great reactions and we got students to actually watch the show. As well as showing quotes from important people and/or organizations.
Students would actually believe and understand what we were showing and were being informed. On top of that we got each episode checked for
credible by administers which we always passed. From these experience in broadcasting I learned how to use ethos quite effectively. Broadcasting
taught me that without ethos you do not have anywhere to begin. If no one sees that you are credible then no one will listen to you in your discourse
community. It is important to show credibility without there is nowhere to start. This transferred to my own way of using ethos to in the beaginnig
show and strengthen my credibility early on so people keep listening.
It is easy to just say a few facts but as our audience are high school students we had to gain their attention via aesthetic appeal. When I mean is keep
high school students interested in the show and not go on their phones. If we could not connect to them then I would utterly make us useless that is

Ethos Pathos And Logos
Athletes in America are known to be some of the highest paid athletes in the world. Multi–million dollar contracts and extreme amounts of money. They
play extreme amounts of games and get paid what the general public would think to be a lot. In reality, they don't get paid enough. In The Cauldron
article, Leland Faust try's to persuade the audience about athletes paychecks. He effectively uses ethos, pathos, and logos in order to persuade the
audience into believing athletes should be paid more.
First, Ethos. Mr. Faust begins by telling the tale of how sports appeal to everyone from all demographics. He said "Sports are cross–cultural in a way
that virtually nothing else is. Sports fans have no one demographic therefore money shouldn't either." This establishes a sense of knowing the main
topic here. Mr. Faust explicitly states that money and people shouldn't have a demographic. This further affirmed that money shouldn't be controlled
by just one source. Next Mr. Faust said this "The athletes are paid [...] to perform services for a few years [...] then when their short careers are over
cash their checks and move on [...] from the money owners and leagues don't want you to have". This rather winded quote is the perfect example of the
main reason athletes are being withheld from whats rightfully theirs.
Second, Pathos. Mr.Faust has a strong stance on the rare ability of players and why they are so special. He said, "The professional athlete is one of the
rarest jobs a person can

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
When an author writes a persuasive article of any kind they use at least one of 3 appeals to get their point across. The appeals of Pathos, Ethos,
and Logos are used by all persuasive essay writers to prove the point they are trying to relay across and are applied to every argument. Ethos is an
appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader, pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a
way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response, logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience
by reason. When faced with the question why Native Americans' dying Language need to be saved the article "Saving America's Endangered
Languages" brings up a number of valid points to help strengthen its argument. Every point that is bought up by the author Ellen L. Lutz uses one or
more of these points to help prove that point that native american languages need to be saved.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In trying to prove this point she appeals to by using ethos to help strengthen her argument. She states "to the Native Americans whose languages are
just a few years away from extinction, the loss goes to the heart of their identity. It's a matter of cultural survival." This is a clear appeal to one's
emotions to bring out an emotional response a feeling of sadness for the native american people the article is based around. Ethos in this sense can be
used to help place the reader in the shoes of the subject and help see from the subjects point of

Ethos And Logos In Advertising
There are 3 types of form of argument in creating advertisement, namely, ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is a form based on character or authority while
pathos is based on emotions such as fear, desire, sympathy and anger. Lastly, logos is something on logic, facts and figures. In advertisement industry,
ethos could be identified through the product which is endorsed by celebrity, someone in a uniform and professional looking people. This is because
ethos refers to the trustworthiness or credibility of the people who advertise. When we see a puppy locked inside stuffy cage, beside an empty feed
bowl and staring at us, we probably feel sympathy for the poor puppy's situation. This is the way the advertiser sells us dog food. They are successful
to stimulate our pathos as Pathos means persuading by appealing to the people's emotion. Logos is a concept that is opposite of pathos. It means
persuading by use of reasoning and logic. It is mostly in form of evidence, explanation, facts, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, we began with daily essential device, smartphone. It is an irrefutable fact that our versatile smart phone has the both advantages and
disadvantages. We imagine ourselves using our phones on the street while walking, even when going across the pedestrian crossing. It is very
perilous action and we know it, but we do it. We imagined of the picture that a person is going across the pedestrian crossing, then slowly, there
would be an appearance of pool of blood at his underneath. In the end, he reaches at the edge of a cliff that if he makes forward a step, he will fall
down. However, most importantly, he does not know his fatal situation as his two eyes are desperately staring at his phone screen. It was our first draft
and we thought it is a common problem nowadays. This means everyone could understand the ad and it could function as a public service
advertisement as we planned. But, in the end, we conclude that it is effective, yet,

Writers use pathos, ethos, and logos in their writing to appeal to their audience. Pathos is an appeal to emotions, ethos is an appeal to trust, and
logos is an appeal to reasoning or logic. Frederick Douglass's, " What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" is about his views and the views of many
slaves towards the Fourth of July. He uses ethos, pathos, and logos effectively to convey his central message. "Fellow – citizens, pardon me, allow me
to ask, why am I called upon to speak here today? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence?" (Douglass) Here he
appeals to ethos. Douglass was once a slave who was able to escape. As a former slave, he did not experience the Fourth of July the same way free
people did.

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
Aristotle believed Rhetoric's main purpose was to persuade an audience. (Rorty 1996). Aristotle claimed that there were 3 main appeals that the
persuader would use in order to convince the audience that their view is the right one, or that their product is the best. Aristotle would argue that these
arguments all have a basis in "common sense", meaning that the persuader can come to a conclusion based off of the audiences shared, and agreed
upon knowledge (Gregoric 2007). Logos, Ethos, and Pathos are the three type of appeals Aristotle uses to describe the rhetoric of persuasion. Logos is
the appeal to logic and reasoning. Logos primarily uses data and statistics in order to persuade an audience. However, logos can also utilize the "if A
then B" statements to come to logical conclusions using an assumed common sense for your "A" statement The appeal to logic is highly used in
scientific studies because every conclusion is based on results and numbers obtained from experiments. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This credibility can come from the persuader themselves, or a person(s) of credibility that has influence over the audience. For example, an audience is
much more likely to listen to a dietician on a healthy diet than a co–worker who is trying the latest "trend". Ethos also uses the common sense by
assuming the person(s) of credibility has had the background in order to present their conclusion.
Lastly, Pathos is the appeal to emotion. Pathos will use the emotion the persuader is appealing to and exploit that to convince the audience of their
point of view. Pathos has been used heavily in politics recently, mostly appealing to the people's emotion of anger and embarrassment in congress to
persuade the audience that the opposing party is the one to vote for. The assumption of common sense is also used in pathos. In order to appeal to one's
emotions, the audience must share the same knowledge you're basing your argument off

A logo is a graphic mark or symbol used by commercial enterprises, organizations and companies. Logos are either a full graphic like symbols and
icons or are composed of the name of the organization like a logotype or word mark. To make a logo for your organization or commercial enterprises
you need a logo design company or a graphic designer to design your logo. It requires a clear idea about the concept and values of the company or
product as well as understanding the target group or consumer. The steps of a logo design process are finalizing the logo concept, choosing a suitable

The history of Domino's Pizza and their logo
Two brothers in a small Michigan town have founded it in the 1960's; Domino's was once a small pizza store. Now it is the 2nd largest pizza chain
in the United States, with many stores around the world. Domino's famous pizza store enters the world of pizza. Once offering only a limited
selection of pizza, but now they have branched out into vegetarian choices, their famous chicken wings, pasta, sandwiches, and of course their famous
pizza. Domino's has become the place that many people think of first when they want to pizza. Domino's Pizza has been opened for 52 years.
One of the important things that have helped Domino's pizza over the years was their distinctive look of their logo. The bright attractive colors stand
out to people passing nearby. The color of a logo is important Research reveals people make a subconscious judgment about an environment or product
within 90 seconds of initial viewing. Between 62 and 90 of that assessment is based on color. Red color is usually used for restaurants to stimulate
appetite.

Volkswagen Logo History
The Volkswagen logo is a household image that is known on an international level. In over seventy years, the logo has not changed a great deal and
has stood the test of time. What most people do not know how ever is it 's lush history dating back to Hitler 's reign to current day with law suits
debating the original creator of the logo. In short, the Volkswagenlogo is memorable, scalable, and effective without color. In addition to discussing
the evolution of its design, what makes a good logo, and my opinions on it, I will also discuss the historical background of the logo and the company
itself. Although the design itself is very recognizable, I would say the history behind it is more intriguing.

A successful logo should work both with and without color. This is important because a lot of the time, the logo will be used across all mediums.
For example, it could be carved in wood or made with metal. Scalability is another great attribute in a successful logo. Whether the logo is on a tag
under an inch in size, or on a billboard, it should be legible. Lastly, the logo should obviously be relevant to the industry the company is involved in.
This might seem like common sense to most, but a lot of ineffective logos out there really don 't fit the current trend or design sense for said industry.
With that being said, all these points are just my personal opinion and will come up later when I start discussing the evolution if the Volkswagen logo.
The First Design
The very first Volkswagen logo was developed in 1938 and was actually the result of an office competition. Franz Xavier Reimspiess, an employee
of Porsche, created the first logo during the logo design competition within the company. He was given a one time payment of 100 Reichsmarks
(about $400). Reimspiess was also the engineer who perfected the actual engine for the first Beetle 's in the 1930 's. The initial design done by
Reimspiess and the current 3D design they use today really is not that different for having so much time go by. The initial logo indeed contain the "V"
sitting on top of the "W" in a bold sans–serif font that is still used today.

Given this, the exposure/repetition–effects literature stream is helpful in understanding the theory behind response to stimuli such as logos.
Researches who have examined the relationship between exposure (in particular, repetitive exposure to stimuli) and affective response have reported
results that can be categorized into two broad categories. First, a number of studies report an inverted "U" relationship between exposure to stimuli
(ranging from nonsense syllables to advertisements) and affect (Crandall, Montgomery and Ress 1973;Kail and Freeman 1973; Zajonc Crandall, Kail
and Swap 1974, Anand and Sternthal 1990; Calder and Sternthal 1980). The prevailing explanation is the "two factor theory" that states two opposite
psychological processes: positive habitation and tedium mediate the relationship between exposure and affect(Berlyne 1970). Positive habitation is
defined as a reduction in uncertainty or conflict in a person's mind (Cacioppo and Petty 1979). Repeated exposure leads to more opportunities to learn
about the stimuli thereby reducing uncertainty and this learning is presumably rewarding and leads to increased affect towards the stimulus (upward
portion of the inverted U). The decline of affect (downward portion of U) results from the tedium of repeated exposures to the stimulus. Tedium is
defined as a state of

Rhetorical Devices: Ethos, Pathos, Logos The two articles written had different goals to reach out to readers. The article, "Can Animals Think?" by
Eugene Linden, main purpose was to convince readers that animals have a similar mentality as humans. The second article, "Who Wants to Shoot an
Elephant? by Wells Tower provides multiple perspectives about hunting to the reader to form an opinion towards this topic. To achieve the purpose of
the articles, both of the authors used the rhetorical devices ethos, pathos, and logos. Although Mr. Linden employed useful anecdotes that appealed to
emotions, Wells Tower's use of logical ideas and emotional tales proved to be more successful. "Can Animals Think?", written by Eugene Linden,

Advertisement Success and the Use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos
The main purpose of commercials and advertisements is to persuade the viewer to purchase the product that is advertised, but not all commercials are
successful in this endeavor. Companies, such as Budweiser and Kleenex, appeal to the viewers' ethos, logos, and pathos in order to influence them to
buy the advertised product(s). In order to appeal to each of the categories, companies use different tactics to catch viewers' attention. The use of ethos,
logos, and pathos can make or break an advertisement based on how it is being used.
Budweiser first released its "Lost Dog" commercial during Super Bowl XLIX (49). The advertisement centers itself around a small dog who, out of
curiosity, enters a truck trailer without the knowledge of his owner. The dog then attempts to find its way back home but encounters an obstacle that it
cannot overcome– a hungry wolf. When all hope seems lost, the dog's best friends, the Budweiser trademarked Clydesdale horses, come to save him.
The dog and horses all make it back home to their owner at the end of the advertisement.
The commercial appeals to the audience's pathos more than anything. Animals, especially dogs, have a way of pulling with human heartstrings. "...they
can be used to transfer desired meanings to the products with which they are associated" (Phillips 1). In other words, using animals in advertisements
can link advertised products to the feelings that are associated

Ethos Pathos And Logos
An efficient persuasive essay should contain a multitude of elements in order to support claims and establish credibility. The three terms Pathos,
Ethos and Logos are rhetorical appeals used specifically for persuasion. Each of these terms is useful in arguing a point, or persuading a reader to
observe a topic in your favor. Pathos originates from the Greek language, and is translated into "suffering." This appeal is most commonly used to
adhere to the senses, such as a person's emotions, needs, and values. A good example of pathos is referring to one's country as "motherland" in order
to evoke feelings of patriotism. However, using Pathos as an appeal in an essay can either be a hit or a miss. One should only use Pathos if it strongly

Alone, the use of only ethos, pathos, or logos would make for a semi–interesting story, but together, they tell a believable account of real events. Beatty
makes use of all three techniques to connect with her audience and share her own story as well as hard facts that verify the events. The powerful

credibility with her readers. Her goal in including those thoughts seems to be to gain trust and respect that makes her story appear trustworthy. Beatty's
extra emphasis on specific children's background appeals to the audience's sense of pathos. She gives insight into certain students like DeAndre by
including details of their actions. She provides one specific occasion of DeAndre's human emotion when she shares that "He began to cry, jaw set,

Persuasive Speech Logos
"No matter what discomforts and expenses you had to bear to come here, there will be seven minutes tomorrow morning that will make you feel it
was worth it," said a NASA guide to a group of guests on the day of the rocket launch. The purpose of each of these articles have large distinctions
between each other. The first article, "In Event of Moon Disaster," by William Safire, is meant to comfort the audience. The second article, "The July
16, 1969, Launch: A Symbol of Man's Greatness," by Ayn Rand, is meant to describe the amount of happiness and pride the nation as a whole felt that
day. The purpose of these articles is also tremendously impacted by how the authors present the subject to the audience. Because the speaker of the
second article, Ayn Rand, was present in this particular occasion there is an intimate influence on the text from the speaker. Both of these texts appeal
to the audience with ethos considering they are both prevalent people in society. The President has automatic ethos, and the author also has ethos with
her position as a novelist. On top of that both articles appeal to the audience with logos because it is very logical that the nation would either be upset
and mourning the case of a loss, or the nation would be jubilant and elated with the successful landing on the moon. Lastly, the articles appeal to pathos
in that they trap the american hearts with either sadness or happiness. The articles hook into the reader's emotion through talking about families
mourning and using figurative language about the image of the launch. Both of these texts are equally effective in completing their purposes.
Furthermore, the purpose in these two articles are completely variant, but they still have similarities. The first article, "In Event of Moon Disaster,"is
just the President trying to comfort the American people and maybe even those who have theoretically died. The President is reaching out and
reassuring his people that America will not give up, and that these two men were not lost in vain. These two men willingly made a sacrifice which lead
to their death, according to this speech, making this mission unsuccessful. Even though Nixon is not the author of the speech, he adds ethos to the
speech

This paper analyzes the types, forms, and effectiveness of the author's use of pathos to evoke emotion from their audience to persuade them to support
the purpose of their message. Defined in the course pack as "using emotion to persuade" (Heasley et al. 128) pathos is a technique rhetorists use to
garner an emotion response from their audience through one of four methods. These five methods are word choice, vivid examples, personal
experience, scare tactics and sensory details; authors can employ these methods individually or in conjunction with one another to invoke a pathetic
response from their audience. In End the Drug War's ad "DID YOU KNOW?" they effectively use, pathos to persuade their audience to combat

ad is attempting to gain a greater emotional response from the audience. The background of a brighter white light shining down symbolizes the need
to shed light on the situation. The child seating on a landing on the stairwell could signal to the audience that we have reached a tipping point and
need to act to improve the situation and not fall further down the steps. With the combination of the railing on the stairwell depicting bars of a jail

The different modes I use to try and persuade someone vary greatly depending on many factors. Some of these factors include my audience, the
medium I am attempting to use, as well as my desired message and outcome. While writing, putting an emphasis on Logos and Pathos works the best
for me, as these two in coordination will typically build Ethos. I like to use various facts that are inherently emotional in my persuasive works. I do
this mostly because facts can be verified and accepted as true thus, the emotions in which I conjure and project with these facts are verified as just.
This allows me to build various forms of ethos by both proving factually relevant to the situation as well as emotionally attached to the circumstances

When I feel passionate about a topic I become deeply entrenched in the facts as well as the emotion behind the subject. If I understand the audience
and how to deliver my message, then passion for my topic is usually infectious. Due to the fact that I like to show this passion, I am perhaps most
persuasive when speaking in public. To me personally, I feel that I have many more tools at my disposal when public speaking than when writing.
While the premise, information, and general tactics remain the same whether writing or speaking; when writing my argument, I am unable to do
things such as provide more emphasis on imperative information and feelings, look people in the eye, and utilize body language and gestures to
portray the message exactly as I see fit. In my opinion, allowing my argument to be read typically results in an infinite number of different ways of
portraying tone, meaning, and vocabulary. The same can be true of listening to a speech however, I am able to use projection, posture, movement and

Ethos, Logos And Symbology

  • 1. Ethos, Logos And Symbology "Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are modes of persuasion used to convince audiences." In the video, "Breaking News: Some Bullshit Happening Somewhere", uses Pathos very well by provoking the audience to laugh and feel sorry for the residents. The actual "Bullshit", is the language given by the news anchors and how careless the "somewhere" is to have a bear loose. The language actually pulls readers in and some find it funny rather than inappropriate. There were no facts included in the video, so there's no Logos represented. As for Ethos, the video doesn't have an appropriate language especially for the age group that watches the news, concluding the audience doesn't have trust in the author/ video. In the video, ... • 2. Ethos Logos THESIS: In Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" vivid imagery is utilized through ethos, logos, and pathos in an attemt to sway the acts of sinners to be morally correct." Jonathan Edward, an American theolagian and central figure in the awakening during the 1800's, was mostly known for leadning the great awakning and his strong belief in hell: a very common topic during his time. In his sermon " sinners in the hands of an angry god," preached on July 8, 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut. Edward emphasizes gods power and how easy it is for god to drop you in hell, so therfore you should do everyhting you can to get on his good side. "Sinners in the hands of an angry god" is a sermon written by Jonathan Edwards, an American theolagian. The sermon was preached during the periode of great awakening when it was a time of religiouse revival. The Great Awakening was essentially a spiritual awakening of different religious groups in thethirteen colonies of America in the 18th century. While before the people were more static and somberin their approach toreligion, when the Awakening began they started to be more emotional, so they could feel a greater connection to God. After the Glorious Revolution of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using pathos connects with the reader or listener emotionally, sometimes making them feel that the speech is being directed to them personally. The use of ethos is critical because in order for edwards audience to take him seriously, they must respect him and agree that he is worth listening to. Finally, the use of logos in edwards preach is important because facts are needed in order to make a valid position and point. Opinion is great, but the readers and listeners need to know the facts in order to listen and agree to edward ethically and emotionally. • 3. Example Of Ethos Pathos Logos Being homeless is found all around the world in every country. Either the people lost their house due to weather, money, or even being kicked out, being without a home is something no one should have to go through. While the Habitat for Humanity advertisement is lengthy, I argue that the advertisement effectively convinces the audience to join by donating, advocating, or volunteering through its use of logos, pathos, and ethos. One of the very first people we met at the beginning of the advertisement is a girl, later we learn her name to Pheeyo Aung, talking about living in a garage. This specific part of the video shows how logos is being used. By telling us about her living conditions before by showing us pictures of her family. She even tries not to cry while trying to talk about wanting to have a real living space and get out of the garage she was in. Although she was very emotional during this section of the advertisement, the audience see what she was really living like. We get a feel of how she was living, and it was not something she was just told to say. The video also shows us some statistics of Housing problem. Again, showing the use of logos by giving us numbers to visually see now and for the future. These statistics included how just in America alone, there is a 33% of housing problem. And more than one billion people in the world live in "housing slums". They also show us a visual graph of the world filling up to 32 percent to show the housing problem in the ... • 4. Texting And Driving Logos Texting and driving is more dangerous than it seems, taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds anything can happen. Many innocent lives have been taken by distracted driving. The Public Service Announcement "Don't text and drive", displays a teenage girl driving in the car with some friends. The girl then receives a text from her mother that reads "You know when you'll be back tonight?" As the girl proceeds to text back she doesn't realize she begins drifting into the oncoming traffic lane, where a young lady is driving with her two children. Before the two cars collide, time stops and the drivers get out to conversate. Once they get back in time begins to move again and the cars wreck. In the PSA "Don't text and drive" Produced by TranterGrey Media, pathos stood out over ethos and logos. Pathos is used more effectively element in this video. First the PSA illustrates pathos more than ethos or logos, because before the cars collided time froze and both drivers get out and discuss what is about to happen. During this conversation, the older woman asks the teenage girl did she know that she is in her lane and if she is texting. The teenage girl responds "I was just checking in with my mom. I was telling her, I thought I would be home by six". The older woman then states "It's okay there's enough time, just pay attention." The girl quotes "I'm not even halfway through the text, there is no way! I'm not going to look up". The older woman cries "my babies are in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Texting And Driving Logos Every American in the U.S has an addiction of being on a phone while driving. The Public Service Announcement (PSA), "The Danger of Texting & Driving" presents an American teenager texting and driving. This PSA shows and explains what can happen when a person is in a vehicle and on a mobile device. As mentioned previously this video demonstrates what consequences can happen as a result of any American simply looking at his or her phone while driving. However, this short video also can teach and demonstrate why anyone should not get on anything that will cause a distraction to the person who is operating the vehicle. In the PSA, "The Danger of Texting and Driving" filmed by Blue Lobster Productions, the video uses pathos which overshadows both ethos and logos regarding the subject of texting and driving. Although, in this PSA, the use of pathos is more effective than of the other two ethos and logos. Watching this short video of "The Danger of Texting & Driving, the audience observes a typical day of a teenage man tying his shoes, and a small child kicking a soccer ball. The intended audience may feel more sympathy for the kid, because of what is going to occur next, and of the innocent expression on his face, as he was kicking the soccer ball around. While the teenage boy was driving, he suddenly got a text message from his friend. The use of foreshadowing allowed the audience to guess of what was about to happen next. Not knowing the boy was kicking the soccer ball around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Creating A Good And Memorable Logo Just assuming, when most people think of logo design, the image probably goes something like this. A scruffy man, with a graphic T–shirt is sitting in front of a Macintosh computer monitor, with Photoshop open and putting the final touches on the changes of a logo he found in Google images. This scenario, however plausible sounding, is usually incorrect. There are many different and complicated steps that go into creating a logo, and even more steps that go into making a good one. Drafts upon drafts, with variations upon variations, with different color swatches and different color schemes, and dozens of meetings, with panels of people, with all different preferences and hopeful intentions–who knew all these different aspects went into ... There are some helpful tips such as "a logo must be simple, ... memorable, ... enduring, ... versatile, ... and appropriate" (Cass), and these are all aspects that graphic designers consider in the first drafts of a logo. However, if the business owner doesn't understand the reasoning and intentions behind certain decisions that designers make, then it is unlikely that an effective logo will be created. Keeping with the business owner's journey to create a good logo, the owner would probably unintentionally create a logo that fits in perfectly with the current trend of their culture, but that would be a mistake. The outcome of a company's popularity relies heavily on how well their logo can stand the test of time. If the logo doesn't need to be changed every couple of months to keep up with the trends, the easier it will be for the logo to become easily recognizable. The author talks about how many books that her writes and it also has specific years and name on the text. In my opinion, the most obvious example of the ethos is the sentences that the author's writing, because the author is the professional person in the writing area, so that I think she has the power to let reader believes what she said and what she think. There also have some instances to firm the main idea. • 10. Ethos Pathos Logos Rhetoric in Videos Rhetoric is defined as the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. It is used to persuade an audience. According to Michael Austin in Reading the World: Ideas That Matter (661,664), Aristotle has three elements to persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is not just appealing to ethics, but it is establishing the speaker's credibility and character. Pathos is an appeal to emotion to persuade an audience of something. Logos is an appeal to logic with things like facts and research. Any speaker that wants to persuade an audience to believe something should have an equal amount of all three elements. Also one of the "witnesses" says "I'm an older man, so you can trust what I say", to try to build his personal credibility. There is also a expert mentioned to assist the speaker to help persuade his audience while making his point. Personally, I did not find any pathos in the video, but did spot some logos. The use of rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos ensures that the information appeals to not only one area of communication, and effectively gets across to the intended audience. Bianca Roberson was an 18 year old girl who was recently killed by David Desper in a road rage incident. The article, written by Lydia O'Connor recounts the events of the murder, including details on how Bianca was killed. O'Connor's writing includes examples of pathos, and logos, making it an effective form of communication to her readers. The first example of pathos is shown when O'Connor includes a background on the victim. She states that Bianca "was headed to Florida's Jacksonville University in the fall", and as readers, we sympathize with this not only because we realize how young she really was at the time of her brutal death, but also because it becomes so clear how quickly her future was taken away from her. Wendy's did so by making McDonald's sound like all of there food is frozen and it is never fresh because they said to stay away from the frozen arches instead of the real name the golden arches. After Wendy's made those remarks about McDonald's, Wendy's went right back into effecting people's emotions, the commercial showed a real juicy burger zoomed into the camera so you would see how delicious the burger looked. • 13. Use Of The Greek Word Logos My word study will focus on the use of the Greek word logos in the opening section of the John, namely 1:1–14. The word is used in a couple of remarkable ways in this passage, namely because it is personified and associated with God and his creative work. Furthermore, this logos is said to take on flesh and dwell with humans and to enlighten all of existence. We are also told that, although the vast majority of men reject this logos in flesh, a handful do accept him. These experience transformation and are no longer considered to be born of natural descent, but to be children of God. Greek Usage The Greek word logos has the general meaning of "word," "statement," "utterance," discourse," "meaning," "matter" or "reckoning." A derivation of lego, it appears as early as the works of Homer. It began to be used in a philosophical context in 500 B.C. by Heraclitus, who used it to express an instrument of thought that expresses the thought itself and its conclusion. As a concept logos was used to include any information given by the senses, and the underlying principle that related objects to each other in a sort of universal law. However, for other philosophers the word could be used in different ways. For instance, Parmenides used the word to express pure thought apart from the 1 senses. The Stoic philosophers used the term in a very different way, giving it the meaning of rhetorical and argumentative ability for an individual. By the third century the term began ... In a classroom presentation you will have to convince your classmates and teacher that what you're saying is worth listening to and that you deserve a good grade on the assignment. Every speech or presentation is persuasive to some degree. If you're trying to get listeners to accept your point of view, you're trying to persuade them. Even if you are delivering an informative speech, you're giving your audience the impression that what you're saying is correct. And that too, is a form of persuasion. If I wanted to convince ... Pathos appeals to the emotions and the sympathetic imagination, as well as to beliefs and values. Pathos can also be thought of as the role of the audience in the argument. By learning to recognize logos, ethos, and pathos in advertising, we are able to understand the message and what is being portrayed. (Albert et al, 2014), suggested that Aristotle postulated that a speaker's ability to effectively convince an audience is constructed on how well the speaker appeals to that audience in three different areas: logos, ethos, and pathos. These appeals together form what Aristotle calls a rhetorical triangle. Logos appeals to reason. The information was quite quantifiable and would enable one to make a rational decision about serving in the army. In portraying the pathos persuasion, the advertisement succeeded in lowering the often–perceived risk persons have of joining the army. Using pathos to persuade someone you want to convince them with an emotional response. These may make your paper more effective, because if it has anything to do with their emotions it will make them more interested in what you have to say. In The Cauldron article, Leland Faust try's to persuade the audience about athletes paychecks. He effectively uses ethos, pathos, and logos in order to persuade the audience into believing athletes should be paid more. First, Ethos. Mr. Faust begins by telling the tale of how sports appeal to everyone from all demographics. He said "Sports are cross–cultural in a way that virtually nothing else is. Sports fans have no one demographic therefore money shouldn't either." This establishes a sense of knowing the main topic here. Mr. Faust explicitly states that money and people shouldn't have a demographic. This further affirmed that money shouldn't be controlled by just one source. Next Mr. Faust said this "The athletes are paid [...] to perform services for a few years [...] then when their short careers are over cash their checks and move on [...] from the money owners and leagues don't want you to have". This rather winded quote is the perfect example of the main reason athletes are being withheld from whats rightfully theirs. Second, Pathos. • 29. Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos Aristotle believed Rhetoric's main purpose was to persuade an audience. (Rorty 1996). Aristotle claimed that there were 3 main appeals that the persuader would use in order to convince the audience that their view is the right one, or that their product is the best. Aristotle would argue that these arguments all have a basis in "common sense", meaning that the persuader can come to a conclusion based off of the audiences shared, and agreed upon knowledge (Gregoric 2007). Logos, Ethos, and Pathos are the three type of appeals Aristotle uses to describe the rhetoric of persuasion. Logos is the appeal to logic and reasoning. Logos primarily uses data and statistics in order to persuade an audience. Pathos will use the emotion the persuader is appealing to and exploit that to convince the audience of their point of view. Pathos has been used heavily in politics recently, mostly appealing to the people's emotion of anger and embarrassment in congress to persuade the audience that the opposing party is the one to vote for. Researches who have examined the relationship between exposure (in particular, repetitive exposure to stimuli) and affective response have reported results that can be categorized into two broad categories. First, a number of studies report an inverted "U" relationship between exposure to stimuli (ranging from nonsense syllables to advertisements) and affect (Crandall, Montgomery and Ress 1973;Kail and Freeman 1973; Zajonc Crandall, Kail and Swap 1974, Anand and Sternthal 1990; Calder and Sternthal 1980). The prevailing explanation is the "two factor theory" that states two opposite psychological processes: positive habitation and tedium mediate the relationship between exposure and affect(Berlyne 1970). Positive habitation is defined as a reduction in uncertainty or conflict in a person's mind (Cacioppo and Petty 1979). Repeated exposure leads to more opportunities to learn about the stimuli thereby reducing uncertainty and this learning is presumably rewarding and leads to increased affect towards the stimulus (upward portion of the inverted U). The decline of affect (downward portion of U) results from the tedium of repeated exposures to the stimulus. Tedium is defined as a state of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ethos Pathos Logos Advertisement Success and the Use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos The main purpose of commercials and advertisements is to persuade the viewer to purchase the product that is advertised, but not all commercials are successful in this endeavor. Companies, such as Budweiser and Kleenex, appeal to the viewers' ethos, logos, and pathos in order to influence them to buy the advertised product(s). In order to appeal to each of the categories, companies use different tactics to catch viewers' attention. The use of ethos, logos, and pathos can make or break an advertisement based on how it is being used. Budweiser first released its "Lost Dog" commercial during Super Bowl XLIX (49). The advertisement centers itself around a small dog who, out of curiosity, enters a truck trailer without the knowledge of his owner. The dog then attempts to find its way back home but encounters an obstacle that it cannot overcome– a hungry wolf. When all hope seems lost, the dog's best friends, the Budweiser trademarked Clydesdale horses, come to save him. The second article, "The July 16, 1969, Launch: A Symbol of Man's Greatness," by Ayn Rand, is meant to describe the amount of happiness and pride the nation as a whole felt that day. On top of that both articles appeal to the audience with logos because it is very logical that the nation would either be upset and mourning the case of a loss, or the nation would be jubilant and elated with the successful landing on the moon. Lastly, the articles appeal to pathos in that they trap the american hearts with either sadness or happiness. The articles hook into the reader's emotion through talking about families mourning and using figurative language about the image of the launch. Both of these texts are equally effective in completing their purposes. Furthermore, the purpose in these two articles are completely variant, but they still have similarities. The first article, "In Event of Moon Disaster,"is just the President trying to comfort the American people and maybe even those who have theoretically died. The President is reaching out and reassuring his people that America will not give up, and that these two men were not lost in vain. These two men willingly made a sacrifice which lead to their death, according to this speech, making this mission unsuccessful. Even though Nixon is not the author of the speech, he adds ethos to the speech ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Defined in the course pack as "using emotion to persuade" (Heasley et al. 128) pathos is a technique rhetorists use to garner an emotion response from their audience through one of four methods. These five methods are word choice, vivid examples, personal experience, scare tactics and sensory details; authors can employ these methods individually or in conjunction with one another to invoke a pathetic response from their audience. The boy is wearing a pinstriped shirt and socks in gray and black on a landing with a gray bannister and a light shining down on him. Inclusion of this picture with the words placed on the ad is attempting to gain a greater emotional response from the audience. The background of a brighter white light shining down symbolizes the need to shed light on the situation. The child seating on a landing on the stairwell could signal to the audience that we have reached a tipping point and need to act to improve the situation and not fall further down the steps. With the combination of the railing on the stairwell depicting bars of a jail cell and the shirt and socks of the child in stripes appearing to make the child look like a prisoner. The final piece of the child seated with his back in the corner with his hands over his eyes reflects the pain, shame, and fear the child feels being stuck in this situation with no apparent way ... • 39. Ethos Pathos Logos The different modes I use to try and persuade someone vary greatly depending on many factors. Some of these factors include my audience, the medium I am attempting to use, as well as my desired message and outcome. While writing, putting an emphasis on Logos and Pathos works the best for me, as these two in coordination will typically build Ethos. I like to use various facts that are inherently emotional in my persuasive works. I do this mostly because facts can be verified and accepted as true thus, the emotions in which I conjure and project with these facts are verified as just. This allows me to build various forms of ethos by both proving factually relevant to the situation as well as emotionally attached to the circumstances or change. I will also ask rhetorical questions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When I feel passionate about a topic I become deeply entrenched in the facts as well as the emotion behind the subject. If I understand the audience and how to deliver my message, then passion for my topic is usually infectious. Due to the fact that I like to show this passion, I am perhaps most persuasive when speaking in public. To me personally, I feel that I have many more tools at my disposal when public speaking than when writing. While the premise, information, and general tactics remain the same whether writing or speaking; when writing my argument, I am unable to do things such as provide more emphasis on imperative information and feelings, look people in the eye, and utilize body language and gestures to portray the message exactly as I see fit. In my opinion, allowing my argument to be read typically results in an infinite number of different ways of portraying tone, meaning, and vocabulary. The same can be true of listening to a speech however, I am able to use projection, posture, movement and voice inflection to affect my desired representation of the ...
