Scaffolding

researched?
Who are some famous people from your state?
Approximate Length of Unit (days, weeks)
6 weeks
Goals:
• Students will learn how to compile research
• Students will learn how to use PowerPoint
• Students will put information into a presentation and present it effectively.
Objectives:
• Students will learn how to be discerning in choosing websites for research.
• Students will learn specific information about the state that they researched.
• Students will use the computer appropriately to research their state
• Students will create a presentation either on PowerPoint and present it to the class.
Unit Summary and Sequence of Events – give details:
I will take the students on the Internet and give them a tour of websites that are
appropriate for research. We will discuss credibility and how to use effective keywords
when you search. I will also discuss citing sources correctly. I will introduce the project
and requirements on a PowerPoint presentation.
Week 1/2 – Students will work alone on this project. They will begin researching at the
library for print sources as well as online for sources that they can use.
Week 3/4 – Students will begin to put together their presentation. I will review the
students’ information and give guidance where necessary.
Week 5 – Finish up presentations
Week 6 – Students present
Software and Hardware needed:
Computers with Internet
PowerPoint

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student: Student will be provided with extra time to complete his/her part
of the project. I will assist the student in research and
organization of the information gathered.
Gifted Student: Student will create diagrams and include some more in depth

Incorporate specific strategies, teaching/instructional activities, procedures and experiences that address state-
adopted academic content standards for students in order to provide a balanced and comprehensive
curriculum.
Vary instructional strategies according to purpose and lesson content. To meet student academic learning
needs, candidates explain content clearly and reinforce content in multiple ways, such as the use of written and
oral presentation, manipulatives, physical models, visual and performing arts, diagrams, non-verbal
communication, and computer technology.

5.8 Students trace the colonization, immigration, and settlement patterns of the American
people from 1789 to the mid-1800s, with emphasis on the role of economic incentives, effects
of the physical and political geography, and transportation systems.
5.9 Students know the location of the current 50 states and the names of their capitals.
