Question 4
1.
2. PRE-PRODUCTION: PRELIMINARY EXERCISE
The brief we were working to was a continuity task involving filming and
editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in
a chair opposite another character, with whom he/she then exchanges a
couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on
action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. We drew storyboards
and edited the film using final cut. This meant we had some previous
knowledge of how to use some of the editing techniques.
3. WHAT PRE-PRODUCTION RESEARCH DID YOU
CONDUCT?
Questionnaire
For pre-production for our film we created a questionnaire and for
other feedback and areas of improvement on our film. This meant we
could identify the strengths and weaknesses of our film.
4. VERBAL FEEDBACK
What we also did was show our film to other people including family
and other college peers. We took some verbal feedback from people
which included:
“ I like how you’ve used an effect and the non diagetic music you’ve
added when the film goes to a flashback, I think it’s really effective and
works well. Also it helps the audience understand what’s happening
there.” I do think this was very appealing in the film as it made it clear
that we were going to a flashback to avoid confusion.
Another person said, “ You’ve got a good variation of different shots. I
particularly like the part where Gerogia gets killed, you’ve used quite a
few differen’t shots from where Goergia quickly turns around to see
Joel, a close up on Joel with the knife and then a high angle shot of
Georgia dead on the floor.” In our pre-production we did create a shot
list so that we have clear steps and was well prepared for filming to
make sure we included almost every shot.
5. HOW DID YOU USE IT?
Before producing the film we looked at the feedback results that we had
collected from people from the questionnaires. From our questionnaire
results we concluded that the audience weren’t drawn in enough and so
we made some changes to our plot and so they needed to see some
foreboding of what was going to happen in the rest of the film to create
suspense and for them to continue watching. By showing the end events
of the film it encouraged people to see the events leading up to this.
6. WHO ARE THE TARGET AUDIENCE?
Contemporary
My target audience is contemporary as they haven’t seen the film
before which makes it more thrilling for them the first time they
watch it and so they have nothing to compare it to for it to look
negative.
15 certificate rating
My film is a 15 rating as it involves some strong violence. This
means no one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or
buy/rent a 15 rated video.
7. …
Habits/Lifestyle
The target audience for my film is people over 15 in their late
teens as my certificate rating is 15. This target audience will
be interested in watching this crime thriller movie as they
wont have seen much of this genre of film before because of
the rating and their age not being so far off. Also they will
often be paying to go to the cinemas to watch this film with
their friends as they might think it’s the best place to watch
this movie in order for there to be a tense atmosphere.
8. …
Ethnicity
People of all races would watch my film because the genre
of my film is popular across all countries. I particularly think
black Americans would watch my film as it is a stereotype
that they are often involved in crime.
Gender
I think males would be a large target audience for my film as
it involves crime and crime is seen as a more masculine
subject.
9. SOCIAL CLASS
Working class
Crime/thriller genre films are a popularity within teenage males as
stereotypically crime is seen as very masculine for someone of a younger
age. It’s more likely that a male of a working class would be involved in
crime as it might be more common within their living environment than
what a male of a more upper class would.
10. CONSUMPTION
I think our film would have been mainly consumed through cinema
exhibition. This is because our certificate rating is a 15, and it is often
that a lot of older teenagers like to go to the cinemas as a hobby and
something to do with their friends.
