Why do we “type”? “ Understanding a person’s type helps us to communicate more effectively, understand a different perspective, helps us to understand ourselves, helps us make sense of ‘our world’, assists in relationships for those who have a more difficult time understanding people and personalities.” (Berens, 2000). Typing is also an effective tool, because we seem to categorize in order to understand and remember. For example, we have been classifying plants and animals for a long period of time. Recognizing different plant types helps us better understand how to care for and keep plants healthy. The same is true for personality styles. When we “type” people as a certain personality, we understand what motivates the person. We can then communicate in a manner that is most suitable for that person. “ When we see that a person’s usual style of behavior is part of a natural pattern and not something that is ‘wrong’ it makes it easier to view our own behavior and that of others with less judgment.” (Berens, 2000)
Class Exercise Sign your name: Now sign your name with your opposite hand: Which signature was more difficult to write? Although you probably had an easier time writing your signature with your “dominant” hand, your other hand was still able to complete the exercise, and with practice, you will improve penmanship with your other hand as well. The same is true for personality traits and characteristics. All of us will exhibit certain personality traits that are natural and comfortable to us. Although we never lose dominant traits, we can learn to use other personality characteristics. Learning to use subordinate traits will not only help us grow and learn more about ourselves, but will help us have a better understanding of others and their personality styles and preferences. “ A preference is an inborn tendency to be, act or think in a certain way.” (Berens, 2000) You may learn to use another part of your personality, but you will never become “what you are not.”

Remember! All of us possess the five personality shapes to some degree! Refer back to the shapes and the order you selected when I asked you to describe yourself by shape. Now that you understand the meaning behind the shape, how many of you fel you selected the correct shape? (Usually 50% of the class sticks with their original selection). We typically have two dominant shapes. For example, I’m a Box/Circle and I believe I inherited these traits from my parents both genetically and the way I was raised. My dad is a box and my mom is a circle. I would love to be more “squiggly” and as I age I find myself “relaxing” a bit more but I know that I will never lose my box tendencies…. Remember we already demonstrate all of the five shapes in our lives today. However we will always be more comfortable with one or two “ways of being” over the other personality styles. Example? (Some say due to the nature of their job they are more Box/Triangle at work and much more circular at home with family and friends….)
Class Exercise Break into groups according to your shape. Read the following scenario and determine as a group how you would solve the situation. Write your answers/solutions on the paper provided. Choose a spokesperson to represent your group and present your ideas to the class.
Section Four: Teams and the Personality: Effective teams consist of team members with different personalities focused on the same goal. By having a variety of personality types on a team, a problem can be resolved using many different ideas and methods. If a team only consisted of one type of shape the danger of “groupthink” or collapse of the project could occur.
Imagine if a team consisted entirely of one personality shape! So what is the plan? We will follow MY plan. Let’s plan the company picnic too! I don’t know what plan to choose!
Class Exercise List the attributes of each shape that contribute to a healthy team.
Conclusion Just like snowflakes, no two people are the same. We may be very similar in many ways but we all have distinct characteristics that make us unique. By accepting and understanding differences in personality, we not only learn more about our temperament and preferences, but we learn to work with others’ preferences as well. Remember! The only person you can change is yourself, and you WILL change as you age and experience more of life. You will always possess dominant personality traits, but you can learn to use and express other traits as well. Learning to flex your personality will help improve communication with your family, friends, and co-workers that will ultimately increase respect and trust in your relationships.
