them. They lived with the effects of these diseases and passed these things on to sexual partners and

that come together and, sometimes, collide. We have examined culture before and used Edgar
Schein's definition, which we have loosely summarized as "the way we do things around here."

Wes Moore as an Outlier In an interview, Malcolm Gladwell once said, "Outliers makes us
understand how much of a group project success is. When outliers become outliers, it is not just
because of their own efforts. It's because of the contributions of lots of different people and lots of
different circumstances." Wes Moore is one of the many great examples of a Gladwellian "outlier,"
as evinced by his upbringing, extraordinary success, and the rare opportunities he received. From
growing up in a broken neighborhood to almost dropping out of school, it seemed as if the author of
The Other Wes Moore would follow the same dark path as his criminal counterpart with the same
name... but he did not. Wes Moore went on to become a successful graduate of John Hopkins

Kelly Miller, mathematician, intellectual, and political activist, who was born on July 23, 1863 in
Winnsboro, South Carolina to Kelly and Elizabeth Miller. Miller attended Howard University in
Washington, D.C. He earned a B.A. in 1886. While at Howard he served as a clerk in the US
Pensions Office. Miller became the first graduate student at Johns Hopkins University in 1887,
where he studied mathematics and physics. Increases in his tuition made Miller leave Johns Hopkins
in 1889 without completing his graduate work. He continued his studies as a student, an English

Excluded from most white colleges, black Americans would have to secure higher education in their
own institutions, Miller argued, and some of them, like Howard, Fisk, and Atlanta Universities,
would emphasize liberal education and the professions rather than the trades and manual arts.
Recognized as one of the most influential black educators in the nation because of his extensive

On my campus, I've become one of the leaders of a mental health awareness movement, involved in
educating, reducing stigma and providing resources to those who are suffering from a mental illness.
During our "Challenge Stigma" month, we made informational posters with an emphasis on stress,
depression and anxiety, and gave students the chance to share their experiences and get help. Nearly
1 in 5 Americans suffers from a mental illness each year, so there is no reason for me to shy away
from continuing to work with the Center for Social Concern and other engaged students, such as
