The document summarizes the author's research into magazine covers across different music genres. The research showed both similarities and differences in how information is presented on covers and contents pages. Key consistencies identified include the placement of the masthead at the top of the cover in a bold font. Covers also typically feature quirky artist portraits reflecting their genre and personality. However, approaches to selling lines and color schemes varied between magazines like Rolling Stone and Kerrang. Contents pages uniformly include articles, competitions and pictures to entice readers into specific stories.
1. Research
My research first started by going through various magazine covers in the music
industry and trying to find as many differentgenre's as possible. As you can see
there is a large variation throughout the industry with the way in which the music is
presented and to what sort of audience.
My research has shown me that there are lots of similarities within the music
industries publications. I have noticed there is a large consistencywithin where the
Masthead of the Magazine is placed, usually at the top in a bold, bright, noticeable
font. The front page images are usually quirky portraits, reflecting the genre of the
artist and their personality. The main contents of the magazine is usually spread
across the front page in a consistentstyle and font, with that a tag line also follows,
showing an small and intriguing incite to the article. Not all music publications have
a Selling Line, this shows that there is a big difference inthe way that each
individual magazine is set out to look visually appeasing. The cover lines also vary
across magazine, with Rolling Stone keeping continuity across all of their magazines
with a similar layout. Yet magazines such as Kerrang have large variations to their
magazine, such as colour schemes and whether the Masthead is in the foreground
or background of the Front Page.
2. Contents pages always have lots of information on them regarding, articles,
competitions, stories and other contents of the magazine. These are usually re-
enforced with pictures to entice the reader into looking further into the article, these
are also usually the main articles that have been advertised on the Front Page.
Page numbers are always present, showing the reader where to find the relevant
information. The layout for most of the contents pages I have seenhave had boxes
or squares to put the information in, this is done it can be easily separated therefore
easily discoverable. There are lots of ways to set out a contents page but I think that
the most successfulare those that are fun and look creative.
