In what way does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
Cover
The mast heading is in
the generic position. At
the top of the page,
normally with a graphic
behind.
The normal
convention for the
main headline is to be
in the biggest font,
most likely placed in
the center of the
page, to grab the
audiences attention.
All the Sub-
headings follow
normal
conventions, since
they are usually
placed down the
sides of the cover
The main image follows
convention, as it normally
contains the person your
main article is about. They
normally maintain eye-
contact with the camera,
just like mine.
This small ad for tickets
is a normality within
magazines
Bright colours are very
common within the rock
genre. These loud
colours represent a
rebellion against the
calm and formal
magazines.
The font matches
the same reason for
the colour scheme.
It is loud and bold,
like the rock genre
is meant to be.
My Ideas
Kerrang! Is a very popular magazine throughout the rock community. I feel like
the mast heading they used is a great representation of the stereotypical
conventions within the rock genre.
Having the text broken up and as messy as what they have used, sticks out
and it has to be unique, since it is the first impression of the magazine.
From the magazine ‘Q’
I feel like the graphics behind the sub-headings creates a louder
atmosphere of the whole magazine, giving it a creative, loud vibe. It
also makes the text stand out more, making it clearer to the audience.
I have also taken the idea of different sized fonts to signify importance.
The bigger the font, the more important. The artist is normally the
biggest font, as that’s what draws the audience in.
Numbers are
always put on the
contents page, to
inform the audience
where the articles
are.
These images follow
the forms and
conventions of a
normal rock magazine.
They show the
audience who the
article is about but, also
attracts an audience.
Quotes are generically
used on every contents
page, this is to inform
the audience what the
article is about.
The title of the page is
normally placed at the top
of the page. So the reader
sees this first
Headings are a
common convention
within magazines,
as they inform the
audience what is
inside the magazine
This is just to add
on to the
headings, giving a
bit more
information. This
is a common
convention of
magazines.
Every magazine
has an ad
somewhere,
advertising
themselves.
I took the idea of having the contents written down the inside of the page,
from the magazine; ‘NME’. I feel like it has a nice sense of orginisation,
whilst also maintaining that rock, messy look that is generic within every rock
magazine.
I also decided to use the different fonts as they show the importance of the
information, who or what it is about being the biggest font.
I liked the way that the sub-headings were placed onto the graphic, making it
stand out and seem more important to the viewers. It also shows the
different topics that the magazine will cover within this issue.
Having more than one picture makes the contents page
seem more cluttered but, not in a messy way. It portrays
the magazine to have more content to share and it also
implies the messy lifestyle that the rock genre lives
under.
The idea of having one picture bigger than the others
seemed like quite a good idea to me as, this suggest to
the reader that this is the article with the most detail
within its contents. It also suggest that this is the main
article of the magazine, the one that could sell the most
and attract a bigger target audience.
ARTICLE
The main image
is common on
articles as it
shows, who the
article is about
and it can also
show a bit of the
celebs
personality.
The celebrities name is usually
placed in the top corner, to show the
audience who this is.
There’s always a title on every
article, giving a hint to what
hides in the contents.
In the rock genre, it is
generic to use messy
or broken font. This is
why I used this font,
as it is untidy and
messy.
The page numbers are always there to go
with the contents page, so the audience
knows where to find the article they want.
A pull quote is normally used as a look
into what the article would be like, and
to get a feel of what the celeb is like.
Normally, there’s a
line or two about
the general idea of
the article.
The texts usually
differ in styles to
signify who is
talking.
I found that the heading going across the two pages gave the whole article a louder,
bolder sense, as the viewer is reading it. It also made the audience more intrigued,
as it makes the article look interesting and entertaining.
The title usually applies to the article, like this one, and I made the same decision
with mine, as it talks about being on tour and that is the whole topic of the article.
