2. Shots
■ When editing, we made sure that certain shots seemed predominant
compared to others and we reinforced this through the use of certain filter
and styles of editing. For example we decided to use the app Pinnacle as it
offers a large number of editing styles and filters that allowed us to make
the most of the footage that we got.We firstly ran some of our tracking
shots through the app in order to reverse them. This fits the normal
discourse expected from a modern music video as it plays around with the
expected norms and we ensured that the shots fit in with the song and
therefore played a role in ensuring that the video was extremely effective
and the lyrics are predominant.
■ This was reinforced through the use of cropping the mid shot that we filmed
at our first location in the ‘King Georges Park’ as the shot shows the
protagonist’s arms being pulled by a string. This action fitted the lyrics “hung
up on a thin red line” and therefore made the lyrics more predominant.
3. Problems with editing
■ One problem that our group had to face was ensuring that the lip synching was
perfectly in time with the previously recorded footage. This is hard as our song
is repetitive and therefore finding the correct footage for a certain piece of the
song is very hard.
■ It’s also hard as we filmed such a large amount of lip synching that the footage
for the rest of the video is having to be used twice and was not fitting the fast
paced and upbeat tone of the chorus of the song. However, it did mean that we
could be selective and perfected when choosing which clips to use during the
lip synching section of the song .
■ Another problem with the editing was that it was difficult for us to fit clips that
the protagonist was dancing in as they needed to fit the beat of the music.
4. Advantages of editing
■ Editing allows the producers of the video to maximise the effect that certain
shots have on the audience. For example, we chose to edit certain shots of the
protagonist (Rosie) is a way that can manipulate the audience into sympathising
with her.We decided to keep a clip that she was naturally laughing in within the
video and slow the shot down as it meant that we can enforce the happy clips so
that they appear more different from the negative clips used later within the
video and therefore provokes more emotion from the audience.
■ Another advantage of editing is that we can use apps to manipulate shots. For
example, we use the time laps camera to film Rosie walking around our London
location and we then found that when this shots was slowed down it created a
unique shot of her that appeared as if we had taken a large number of pictures
and therefore gave a video a distinctive style that fits our music video.
