Doctor Who Still Image Analysis Lauren Wilson 12S11
Camera: This still image is an over-the-shoulder shot. This makes the audience feel like they are the third person in the story and are looking in on an important moment. The camera is also on the same level as the child which makes the audience look up at the doctor and much like the child, the viewer is in awe of him. Furthermore, the viewer is on the same level as the child because the audience is seeing the doctor from the childs’point of view. Also, the camera is looking up at the doctor in a subtle way, it’s not obviously pointing at the doctor. This angle has been used to make the audience look up at the doctor, like we are worshipping him. The use of this angle reveals to the audience that the doctor is a very important character.
Body Language: The doctor is standing up straight with his hands on his hips which is demonstrating his authority and superiority. His confident body language inspires confidence in the viewer because we think he knows what he’s doing. Also, the pose he’s in is very heroic – this immediately tells the viewer that he is the protagonist and will ‘save the day’. The doctor is higher up than the child which reveals his power status. The child seems quite guarded and has his arms by his side, which suggests that he is scared and anxious about something.
The effect of the chiaroscuro makes the room look quite magical. This tells the audience that the child thinks of the doctor as magical and invincible. The misty and foggy effect with the lighting creates a sense of eeriness. This makes the audience anxious because they know that something dark and dangerous is going to happen. The use of the dim light in the corner and the shadow it creates makes the scene seem really spooky. Also, the small, dim light portrays a symbol of hope and that the doctor is the only hope for the child. The windows in the still image are open. This open window signifies freedom and it also suggests that the doctor is the way to freedom because he’s standing outside the room. The child is still standing inside which suggests that he feels trapped and the doctor is there to help him escape his problem. The child is in pajamas which makes him seem very innocent and surprised. It suggests that he wasn’t expecting the doctor, therefore he’s not wearing his everyday clothes. There are also red curtains. Red connotes danger which therefore suggests that the child is in danger. However, the curtains are tied back and look like they are being pulled away from the doctor, signifying that the doctor is going to get rid of the danger the child is in and make this a safe place for him.
The doctor is wearing a bow-tie and braces which makes him seem more quirky and makes it look like he is wearing a costume, reinforcing the fact that the child thinks of the doctor as a heroic figure. Also, the doctor is pushing back his jacket, revealing his chest which emphasizes how strong and powerful he is. Also, the bow-tie makes the doctor appear quite intellectual which emphasizes how the audience feels he has the ability and intelligence to help the child. The architecture of the room and the roof outside gives the impression of a period look, suggesting that this scene takes place in an older time. The windows are reflecting the doctor, which increases his presence and in a sense he becomes omnipresentwhich is comforting for the child because he is surrounding him.
