Conclusion on Major label Music videos
Major labels on an overall have a bigger budget compared to independent
labels to produce a video. Due to this a music videos made by a Major will
look more professional and more glam due to the access of high quality
facilities. But one can argue that although major labels have these privileges,
are their music videos more creative than independent that have to depend on
creativity to capture audience, and may not have access to mainstream music
channels?
A music video is a promotional tool; a tool to sell the artist’s image, brand and
music. Major labels use this to increase their sales of an artist’s product and
by being able to distribute the music video to many channels and internet
video sites, Major labels have the opportunity to increase sale via exposure
provided by these platforms.
As the music industry changes, major labels are increasingly finding new
ways into gaining revenue via different models. It is clear to see that one way
major labels are doing this is through videos. Videos from Major pop icons
such as Lady gaga are increasingly pushing boundaries, including storylines
And being available in high quality streaming, this has exceptionally increased
the hits. Artists usually get paid with every hit a small amount of money, for
example 1 to 5 pence, from the payments that advertisers pay to have a slot
before the video or to advertise on that particular page, all go to the artist.
This may seem a small amount but when your Lady Gaga hitting a million
views in a day, you would surely believe in the saying – “every penny counts”.
Overall we see that music video’s are more than a disposable promotion
package. Videos from major labels need to have longevity. They need to be
watched over and over and over and over again (I think you get the point).
They need to be engaging though performance, creativity, and music.
A good music video is the heart to a successful artist.
