This document discusses the different conventions used in radio news bulletins. It defines intro, copy story, cue, cue and clip, cue and voicer, back anno, stab, bed, SOC, cue and voxpop, cue and two way, cue and wrap, and OB. Intro provides the presenter's name. Copy story tells a story in 3-4 sentences. Cue introduces a story and may include audio. Cue and clip includes a 15-20 second audio clip. Cue and voicer includes a 30-40 second recorded piece. Back anno reminds listeners about a previous voice. Stab separates parts of the bulletin. Bed is background music. SOC is the presenter's sign

2. Introduction to the presenation.
In this presentation I will be talking about the different types of conventions
used in on the radio when the news is on. I will be explaining what each one is
and how they use them.

3. Intro
This is a news readers introduction and is a quick and short piece of text that
is read at the beginning of the news, usually telling you what the name if
the presenter is.

4. Copy Story.
This is the most basic type of news story.
It tells you what the full story in 3 to 4 sentences.
No additional audio played.

5. Cue
A cue is an introduction to a story, there may be additional audio.
Two sentences are used to introduce the story, and one “in-line” is used to
introduce a clip.

6. Cue and Clip
Sometimes called a Cut.
It is a 15-20 second piece of audio taken from an interview with somebody
related to a story ( an eye witness or expert)

7. Cue and Voicer
Sometimes called a voice piece.
It is usually 30-40 seconds piece of audio recorded by another journalist

8. Back anno
Short for “Back-annoucement”.
Used after a long piece of audio (most often a voicer) to remind audience
who the last voice they heard was
They are read by the newsreader.

9. Stab (Sting)
Very short version of the jingle (often with no words)
Used to separate parts of the bulletin e.g when the “news” stories ends and
you move into sport.

10. Bed
Music (no lyrics) that plays under the newsreading taking.
Usually fast-paced, intense beat this adds pace and keeps intrest of the
audience.

11. S.O.C
Stands for “standard out cue”
The bit at the end of a bulletin that the presenter signs off with.

12. Cue and Voxpop
Short for “VoxPopwi” latin for “voice of the people”.
15-20 seconds piece of audio featuring approx 4 or 5 different voices.
Illustrates a stay and gives opinion of “people on the street”.

13. Cue and a two way
Tends to be used in longer bulletins.
Like a mini interview between the newsreader and a reporter.
Often live as used for breaking news/events but can be recorded.

14. cue and wrap.
Combination of clip and voicer.
Reporter needs a voicer but embedded within is a clip of someone related to
the story.

15. O.B (outside broadcast)
Some radio stations have a O.B truck satellite links.
They are usually live but can be pre-recorded.
Creates a sense of atmosphere for the listener.
