4. SPECIALTY OF URBAN DESIGN & CITY SCIENCES
The challenge was to find an urban solution for the former Campamento military base, which is
located on the outskirts of Madrid. Currently, it is divided by the highway and has very poor
connectivity with the city center by public transport.
However, it has significant potential as it is close to Casa de Campo Park, has some old
constructions and has plenty of vacant land.
The project consists of a high-tech proposal for a 5-min city, of diverse use and focused on the
next 50-100 years. An internal transport system is generated with nodes that are the centers of the 5
proposed neighborhoods.

28. SPECIALTY OF CONSTRUCTION & TECHNOLOGY
Professor Ignacio F. Solla – Diego García Setien – Archie Campbell – David Castro
Based on an assigned pre-existing building, we are asked to reformulate it into cooler terrain.
As Frosilo is located in Copenhagen, Denmark, already quite a cold city, we propose moving it
to Antarctica.
The selected Antarctic base is the American Mc Murdo station, since it is the closest to the
South Pole and is currently increasing its capacity.
The new shelter must withstand inclement weather with high winds, dry weather, extreme cold,
and winter with many hours of darkness.
The users are exclusively scientists and athletes who can stay all year.
The design becomes more compact and introverted, while a safety room is incorporated for
survival in case the heating system fails.
The great challenge is to be able to transfer all the broken-down structure of the building in
containers inside icebreaker ships and schedule the construction almost exclusively with machinery,
concentrated in the three summer months, the only time when the weather allows it.

46. SPECIALTY OF LOW COST AND EMERGENCY HOUSING
EXCHANGE PROCESS IN A DYNAMIC LANDSCAPE
Chácara Florida, Sao Paulo, Brazil
The task is to generate an emergency housing strategy, but on an urban scale, since emergency
housing, due to its ephemeral and improvised origin, rarely has a greater scope.
The place that is assigned is located in the surroundings of one of the most important
freshwater reserves in Sao Paulo, but unfortunately, as a consequence of informal housing without
sewerage, its drinkability and pristineness are at risk.
Given how critical the use of the land is at this moment, the surface of the water is taken as an
opportunity to generate a floating strategy that adapts to the different seasonal levels of the reserve,
connecting opposite edges and promoting contact with the water by through sports, agriculture and
social exchange. There is a clear intention to create roots in the neighborhood, to reinforce self-
sustainability and human ties.

ATMOSPHERE – PLAN - DETAIL
The task consists of proposing the architecture from three elements that are considered
essential, distributed among the three students that make up each group.
In turn, each group has three concepts that must be incorporated into each housing proposal,
in this case: niche, watching television and playing a musical instrument.
The result, based on the idea of a niche, arises in a hot and dry climate, specifically in El Ejido in
southern Spain.
As a way to keep the house cool and protected from the strong sun, a shape is proposed with
reference to a mix between Baroque and Arabic, which has a fountain in the center and a central
Iranian tower that guarantees air circulation.
What is shown corresponds to the evolution of the setting proposal, reminiscent of the Persian
fabrics of yesteryear, but at the same time with the evolution of television as an individual
smartphone screen.

LA LATINA
The task is individual and consists of working alternately in three different places in Madrid, one
in La Latina, another in Madrid Rio and the third in Plaza España.
The first task is to shape the volume, in this case in La Latina. The proposed model is a carved
Manchego cheese, which, due to the versatility of the material, is very ductile and easily scalable,
starting from the full volume that gradually penetrates.
After different challenges in the other two areas, I return to La Latina, to develop the interior of
the volume of the cheese model, which plays with organic geometry and a quite spontaneous
organization of vernacular construction.
The proposal respects the volumetric and aesthetic logic of the facades and scales of the
neighborhood, but proposes a semi-public ground floor, the incorporation of the elevator that makes
the new piano nobile to the top floor and ends with a roof terrace with urban farming as a
contribution to a high-density neighborhood with little green area. All the houses open onto both
facades and some even have terraces facing the side patio.

71. WORKSHOP AMANN - CANOVAS – MARURI
The assignment consisted of reformulating the north wing of the architecture campus of the
Polytechnic of Madrid. The requirement consists of generating a study option in which they can
remain in the educational establishment, in order to develop creativity, camaraderie and teamwork.
The main idea of the proposal is to bring the mountain to the campus, as an element of contact
with nature and geography, which allows exploring the discipline of architecture with outdoor
instances. On the other hand, all the interior slabs and walls of the building are emptied, leaving only
the shell, in order to experience the entire interior height. Inside, mobile habitable capsules are
presented, which generate spaces with unconventional geometries and facilitate meeting places. In
addition, the number of units can vary over time, adapting to different needs.

ORDINARINESS AND LIFE
Mediterranean sprawl housing in Kila, Split, Croacia.
The assignment consisted of proposing a collective housing complex on a vacant lot in the Kila
area, Split, Croatia.
One of the requirements was to develop a strong idea related to the target group for which the
houses were intended.
We realized that the issue of access to housing for young people has become very complicated
due to gentrification, as well as permanent and independent housing for many adults who live in the
houses of friends and relatives, due to not being able to pay own home. Thus, bringing these
elements together, the proposal consists of 4-level mirror units, which offer a collective and
commercial ground floor, to then start from the less permanent dwellings towards the more
permanent dwellings on the upper floors.
Commercial spaces allow people in an unstable economic situation to generate a source of
employment and remain socially active.
Likewise, recognizing the Mediterranean climate and the Croatian culture of enjoying the
outdoors, a loose access staircase is proposed that allows generating instances of socialization and
collective recreation. The higher floors also have large terraces.
Since the target audience requires efficiency in the interior spaces, these are complemented by the
intermediate spaces, which have vegetation and excellent orientation.

LIVING + WORKING STRUCTURES / EL POBLENOU, BARCELONA
INTEGRATION WORKING INTO LIVING
Taking an entire block in the Poblenou neighborhood of Barcelona, different strategies for
combining housing and work spaces are proposed.
In this case, the challenge was to understand how the house could be integrated into a
construction or work environment.
Searching in which instances this could really happen, we take the case of artists, carpenters or
other trades, who, when working with large physical elements, usually require large workshop
spaces. Then, due to the dimensions and spatial characteristics, the possibility of integrating the
house in its minimum expression within the base volume arises, so as not to hinder its main function
as a workshop.
Recognizing the Mediterranean climate and the possibility of being outside both to work or
live, as well as to exhibit the results or carry out social exchanges, wide patios and corridors are
proposed, which also allow motorized or wheeled access to all the units.
