Cottonseed oil is an oil extracted from cotton seeds that is used for cooking and industrial purposes. It has a golden yellow color and consists of 70% unsaturated fatty acids. Cottonseed oil has a smoke point of around 232°C and is used as both a cooking oil and in soaps, lubricants, and coatings due to its stability. It has anti-inflammatory and skin healing properties but may cause irritation in sensitive individuals or reproductive issues if unrefined.
3. COTTON It is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or
protective capsule, around the seeds of cotton plants. The
fiber is almost pure cellulose . This fiber is used for making
clothes and many more
COTTON SEED OIL It Is a cooking oil extracted from the seeds
of cotton plants of various species, mainly Gossypium
hirsutum and Gossypium herbaceum, that are grown for
cotton fiber, animal feed, and oil. .
INTRODUCTION
4. COTTON SEED has a similar
structure to other oilseeds such
as sunflower seed, having an oil-
bearing kernel surrounded by a
hard outer hull; in processing, the
oil is extracted from the kernel
Cottonseed has been divided
into three parts; Meat (Kernels)
Hull (outer hard covering of seed)
Lint ( soft white fibers)

6. The crude oil is amber to deep red or black in color with a characteristic odor,
saponification value 192–200, iodine value 100–115, and unsaponifiable matter
0.6–2.0%.
After processing, it typically has a rich golden yellow color that is lighter than
peanut and corn oils but darker than soybean, sunflower Its fatty acid profile
generally consists of 70% unsaturated fatty acids (18% monounsaturated, and 52%
polyunsaturated), 26% saturated fatty acids. It’s density ranges from 0.917 g/cm3
to 0.933 g/cm3 and it is among the most unsaturated oils, is used as insecticide
Cottonseed oil has a smoke point of about (232 °C) .
•SMOKE POINT: • The smoke point refers to the temperature at which a cooking fat or oil
begins to break down. The substance smokes or burns, and gives food an unpleasant taste

8. Test for Presence
of Cottonseed
Oil (Halphen's Test): The
development of red colour
on heating the oil with a
solution of sulphur in
carbon disulphide
indicates the presence
of cottonseed oil.

10. Cottonseed oil has traditionally been used in
foods, As a cooking oil. it is used for frying in
both commercial and homecooking
It is significantly less expensive than
olive oil or canola oil , is a good
choice where oil with good stability is
needed ,Also used as salad oilAPPLICATION
Low-grade oil is used in the manufacture
of soaps, lubricants, sulphonated oils, and
protective coatings
11. MEDICINAL IMPORTANCE:
1. Cottonseed oil is used as a solvent for injections and for
edible purposes.
2. The oil possesses emollient properties and is used in
liniments, in several pharmaceutical preparations, as a
substitute of olive oil and in large doses as lubricant
cathartic.
3. It has strong anti-bacterial activity and speeds wound
healing due to high level of anti-oxidant and VITAMIN E P
13. 2:Monounsaturated fats have been
proven to reduce inflammation
throughout the body, whether
consumed or topically applied.
Regular use of this oil can relieve
chronic symptoms of arthritis, gout,
headaches and joint disorders, and
when used in culinary applications,
can soothe the stomach and
optimize digestion
14. SOME SIDE EEFECTS
• Skin Irritation: As is the case with almost every potent
natural oil, people with sensitive skin or those allergic
to this oil may suffer inflammation, itchiness, and skin
redness when using this oil.
• Reproductive Health: Studies have shown that
gossypol, a natural chemical component in cottonseed
oil, can decrease sperm production and motility,
which can impair one’s ability to have a child. Many
commercial versions of cottonseed oil have
undergone a process to remove this gossypol, but it is
important to note whether the refinement process
also includes hydrogenating this oil.
