Mastering Natural Numbers with CLIL Activities
1. ℕ Walking through the nature
The CLIL unit which I have developed during this course is dedicated to deepen the studies of natural
numbers in el first course of ESO. On the first hand we want to start the first course of mathematics
of the ESO using the knowledge of natural numbers which the students get until the 6th grade at
primary education. On the other hand we are laying a strong foundation about the theory of
numbers for the further development of all the other sets of numbers which we will discuss during
the course – as the rules which describe the relations between the numbers within each set will be
extrapolated.
This unit is based on the fact that the students have already worked with natural numbers in primary
education but normally find it difficult to work with combined operations. It is important that
students get a profound knowledge and understanding how these operations work and are able to
apply these skills as in the further development of the course these operations repeat with each type
of number sets. Other important skills to learn for the students during this unit are mental arithmetic
– that’s why we do not allow the use of calculators –, and working in groups and individually.
To achieve this we use the following methodology:
Calculation of exercises with combined operations
Corrections of exercises done by another student
Group and class discussion of the results
Final task: Presentation of the learned content
Preparation of personal vocabulary sheets
The second language – in this case English – is used from the beginning of the course. To familiarize
the students with the usage of the language we are using warm up activities, which by the way help
to switch from their mother tongue to the use of English. We do not use Spanish during the 4
sessions of this unit. We use English to give basic instructions to the students and the work in groups
will be done in English too.
