What Is Civic Engagement
1. What Is Civic Engagement
Civic Embodiment in Virtual Worlds
Introduction
In recent years, kids are largest number of virtual worlds users and participation of them in virtual
worlds has grown (KZero, 2009). Virtual worlds are captivated children with some sort of
characteristics such as immersive, imaginary and collaborative (Tuukkanen, Iqbal & Kankaanranta,
2010). At the same time, citizenship is an important sense that makes people come together and gain
fellow feeling that we have for others in our community (O'Loughlin, 2006). Civic engagement in
both political and non–political process is necessary for developing knowledge, skills and values to
make difference in world. The virtual spaces could be employed for children to express their
opinions and in offering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Volunteering activities cause for understanding disequilibrium in the community and boost
developing some sort of senses such as helping and empathy. One of another need of civic
engagement that is necessary for civic life is positive youth development. Bachen et al. (2008,
p.298) defined positive youth development as "activities that prepare youth to be responsible
individuals, including character–building and fostering civic virtue, obeying the law, patriotism,
fostering good judgment, leadership training, and ethical behavior." Kids are expecting to developed
civic virtue that respect diversities in the community and sense of elimination of bad habits such as
plagiarism or crude patriotism. Youth activism is situated in youth development is other necessity
for civic life (Bachen et al., 2008). Youth activism is comprised of activities that cause for youth

I had the pleasure to volunteer with Adopt a Rescue Pet with the most wonderful and passionate
people for my civic engagement project. I also had the opportunity to work with the founder of the
organization Elizabeth Davis Rubin. Not only did I had the chance to work with Elizabeth, but she
also gave me the opportunity to come to her office to talk to her about the organization. I learn many
things from this project, I got to see the behind the scenes of an organization and all the challenges
they come across. On this small journey I also learn about the opportunities some employers give to
their employees. After a casual conversation with my manager to request a Saturday off to be able to
volunteer, he mentions The Suited for Service Program. Any employers that work with the Suited ...

At first they would only take out specific breeds, but after the success they had the animal shelter,
ask them if they could take other dogs that did not have luck at the shelter. Another thing that Adopt
a Rescue Pet does is that they find a foster home for the dogs. The reason they started fostering the
dogs is because one day someone came to them while they were at the adoption site and ask them
what did they do with the dogs that did not get adopted that they. The responded that they would
take them back to the shelter, the lady said "well, if you guys do not mind, I could take one dog
home and I would bring it back next week when you guys set up for adoption", and that's how they
started the fostering program for homeless dogs. There organization addresses multiple issues. The
main issues that Elizabeth David Rubin mention in the interview were, homeless pets, kill shelters,
and throw away minded. The number one priority for the organization is to remove the pets from the
kill shelters. Once they remove the dogs from the

Regarding the Stanford Pathways of Public Service and Civic Engagement survey, I have mixed
feelings. Although I agree with my results and have minimal difficulty in making sense of my
results, I feel that the information is not in–depth enough to truly be extremely helpful. My results
personally show that I have had the most experience with activisim as a form of public service/civic
engagement. I have some experience with all of the kinds of public service/civic engagement, except
for social entrepreneurship. This can largely be accounted by the fact that I grew up in a rural area
and rarely went into town, which meant my interactions with business have always been limited. I
also simply do not think that I would be quite effective in helping my community through this
specific field. Ultimately, the actions which I find most useful in help are direct and policy, the first
of which I intend on pursuing more in college than I did previously; the latter I intend to pursue to a
similar degree as in high school. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I struggled to answer some of the questions because there was no room for grey–area in how you

none. I wish that, as opposed to this type of system, our responses could have been measured on a
numeric scale, which enables more grey–area. I would like to rank things because I feel that all of
these things have different degrees of impact, different degrees of which I want to partake in them,
etc.; however, I am not given the option to truly rank them like this. Not only are there some things
that I think might have an impact somewhere between little and some, but there are also some things
tha I would like to simply attempt in school. For these activities, it would be preferential, if I had the
opportunity to state something lower than "little" but not none. If the scale was numeric, this would

Jobins Varughese 2915896 The Politics of Civic Engagement Civic engagement refers to the ways
in which citizens participate in the life of a community in order to improve conditions for others or
to help shape the community's future. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through
both political and non–political processes. If we don't participate in such activities, then we don't get
a chance to know people. Civic engagement is all about to improve our society, but if we don't care
about this things, then how can we improve our society? As a citizen, it is our responsibility to

During the last century, American involvement toward civic are falling into a slump. This could
mark a new era of history for democracy but the question is what happens when only about 5% of
American will take part in civic. Since World II American civic engagement are greater and they are
more likely to trust their government and community but over time the people trust is beginning fall.
What could have caused this trust issue? Well, the problem here is over time the people begin to see
a lot lies the government feed them, for an example, the Vietnam war was one of the reason that
caused American reduce their trust the government as bomb the country with a lot of civilian
casualties but the government only showed American the shooting part. ... Show more content on

Three major online communication websites are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. People can share
millions of photos and interact with each other at a constant pace. But does these communication
tools connect the people at all or disconnect them from public interaction. For instant, the Women
March is one of the largest march this year that have also almost a million–people engaged in civic:
"Organizers said Saturday they expect as many as a half million participants – potentially dwarfing
Friday's inaugural crowd" (The Washington Post). Half a million is quite large for a crowd in a small
space like Washington D.C. to March. And most these people also signed up and being introduce

because they didn't develop a related relationship with each other and might lead to chaos. Another
example is a man who tore off an anti–abortion poster that are offer to him by anti–abortion activist:
"Daryle Jenkins, who came from Philadelphia to march today, was offered an 'Abortion Betrays
Women' poster by a group of anti–abortion activists. So, he took it and tore it up in front of them"

13. Service Learning Reflection
According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service–learning is defined as, "learning that occurs
in experiences, reflection, and civic engagement" (Flecky & Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more
universities are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service
learning is civic responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as
a citizen. As will be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a
student, but also to the community members
I personally believe that service learning is a great thing for many reasons. One of the biggest
reasons is that service learning can give you great exposure to having face to face interaction which
I think millennials try to avoid. Another reason that service learning is a great thing is that it can
teach some people about how to be more compassionate as well as helping students understand their
civic responsibilities as young adults. As stated by Flecky & Gitlow (2011), "a unique aspect of
service–learning is that it incorporates structured opportunities for students, faculty and community
partners to reflect on their interactions and activities in light of both educational and community
objectives." (p. 1–2). My interpretation of this quote is that the authors view service learning in a
positive light. My understanding is that the authors believe by students reflecting on their
interactions with the community, it can help further their

There are different forms of civic engagement. Many people can be a part of this and help out the
government for example we can help with the following: community problem–solving, fund–raising
for charity, running for political office, and many more. Community problem–solving is when
people in the community come together to target and put an end to problems that are arising in the
community. There are several types of problems that may arise in a community, these problems can
also arise nationally, globally. It's a way of collaborating and helping out the community for a better
future. Usually there is a group of people who are involved in this and this causes a good and
positive impact on the community. Fund–raising for charity can be categorized

areas where clarification in not necessary. This grant proposal falls under the community service,
and civic engagement categories. Although this grant proposal is for an expansion of preexisting

was no indication how the project would impact those involved, or how it would impact the
community. This proposal never indicated how they would evaluate the project itself once it was
over, and the project had no prediction of the sustainability after the grant either. The only strengths
this grant proposal had was providing a budget match, and fitting within the community service, and
civic engagement categories. I felt this grant proposal was pointless, and I would not fund this
proposal at all.
Grant proposal C proposed for a community mural to be created in various alleys within the
downtown area. This proposal falls within the community service, service–learning, and civic
engagement categories. This grant proposal did not clearly state why it is imperative this project
should be funded. Besides stating illegal activities like tagging would decrease, essentially there
were no problems that would be addressed by this proposal. However, the proposal did state
property values would increase, and beautiful pictures would be displayed for the community to see,

Over the course of years, society has reached a point where violence is considered a typical
manifestation. Year after year, we witness many lives end due to useless reasons. Many strategists
have pondered over different strategies of overcoming this battle, but yet, none has come to succeed.
It's time that our future generation of young, bright minds step up to their role in society and become
more engaged in their civic duties to promote the cohesion and tranquility of their environment. As
young people's civic and political participation continues to decline, communities around the globe
are taking many initiatives to reverse this devastating issue by promoting many opportunities to
engage young people through a variety of methods that allow the youth to actually participate in
their community. Such tactics are policy development and taking action on local issues. The
effectiveness of such notions might take many years to show realization.

It is also a "boundary spanning" activity in that it requires active involvement from people both
within and outside of the classroom context, often resulting in participant contributors who represent
a variety of generations, ethnicities, social groups, and experience levels (Billig and Furco, 2002,
p.vii). Service–learning is designed to reduce the boundaries between an institutional campus
environment and the community around it. It is designed to connect learning to real experience
through service and reflection (Ball and Schilling, 2006; Becker, 2000). As a baseline to facilitate
this development, service–learning is distinct from other types of community service and civic
engagement experiences in that the service–learning experience must not only have a service and
reflective component but also be clearly tied to the curriculum through learning objectives and
theoretical underpinnings (Bloomquist, 2015; Pritchard, 2001). As Barbara Holland, former Director
of the U.S. National Service–Learning Clearinghouse, shared, "Service–learning is all in the hyphen.
It is the enrichment of specific learning goals through structured community service opportunities
that respond to community–identified needs and opportunities." (Kenworthy–U'Ren, Taylor, and

Coalition for the Homeless Speakers Bureau. After the session, I acquired a deeper understanding of
the causes of homelessness, such as the Vietnam War, the expansion of drugs in the US, domestic
violence, and the decrease of low–income housing. The number I will never forget: eight thousands;
the number of homeless people in DC. The words I will never forget: "regardless of who people are,
everyone should have a home." This sounds so obvious, but I tend to think that homeless people
most of the time "deserve" their situation by not working well enough. Homelessness is an issue of
public concern. Like any city, Washington DC is a community, so Americans have to learn how to
live together. However, it seems that there is a huge social and economic gap among Washington
DC inhabitants. Some people are congressmen, some are homeless: some are high–paid, some are
not paid at all. The gap is big, that is the reason why people have to care. In order to raising public
attention, I thought of a project that I did not have the time to work on. I wanted to meet as much

living conditions of their environment. The challenge, therefore, is for the school to help the youth
develop reflective attachments to their nation and a sense of kinship with citizens in all parts of the
world (Banks, 1990). Citizenship education is seen as one of the oldest subjects in the school
curriculum and it continues to be on the radar screen of contemporary curriculum of the school for
the purpose of educating the youth on civic rights and responsibilities. Citizenship education is the
type of education that fosters democratic attitudes, skills, and knowledge to engage and work on
important public issues and make democracy a way of life (Dahal, 2002). The Ministry of Education
and Sports (MOES) (2007) on the other hand is of the view that, citizenship education is a subject
that aims at producing competent, reflective, concerned and participatory citizens who will
contribute to the development of the communities and country in the spirit of patriotism and

He advances that people who are more knowledgeable in civic issues are more likely to take part in
civic and political affairs as well as less likely to have a generalized mistrust and fear of public life.
Realizing the role citizenship education can play in reversing this decline in citizens' civic awareness
and engagement, most developed and developing countries alike have embark on reviewing the
curriculum so as to make citizenship education a core subject, particularly at basic education level
(Keating, Kerr, Benton, Mundy & Lopes, n.d.; Finkel, 2000; Dahal, 2002). More so, the pivotal role
that citizenship education plays in equipping the youth with knowledge, skills and the right attitudes

39. The Importance Of Community Service
Nowadays, community service has become a fully organized integral part of social life for people to
engage in "activities that address human and community needs". (Wikipedia) On the other hand,
Community service is also an essential component of service–learning course system, as a method
of teaching that "encourages a heightened sense of community, civic engagement and personal
responsibilities". (Wikipedia) Different from traditional volunteerism, service–learning program is a
form of experiential education where students can apply their classroom learning to support or
enhance the work of local agencies in thoughtfully organized service, coordinated with the
communities.
The social service movement was initiated by the establishment of Toynbee Service in London in
1884, following the Hull House 5 years later in Chicago, set up by Jane Addams as a realistic
example of philosophy of service–learning during the social–reform movement. (Flecky, n.d.)
According to Kenny & Gallagher, institutions of higher learning in 1900s first developed extension
programs that focused on the needs of local farming communities and the Work Projects
Administration during the Great Depression. (as is cited in Flecky, p.5) Soon after that, the ideal of
"community service" spread to other countries around the world. By the end of 1980s, service
learning initiatives consisting of 4–hour community–based service attracted 70% undergraduates
throwing themselves on the programs. (Rongshan Hu, "The

The functional area of service–learning is currently emerging as an acknowledged department at an
institution of higher education. The theoretical roots of service learning go back to John Dewey, and
the early twentieth century. However, current research on service–learning pedagogy dates back
only to the early 1990's. Best practices for the field are still being created as more and more new
offices are springing up on campuses throughout the United States and institutions internationally.
The reason this functional area is becoming ever popular is due to the positive impact it has on
students and most all educational outcomes.

The biggest impact is with the students' civic engagement. However, outcomes of service– learning
do not end there. Outcomes of service–learning range from academic to moral to life skills and all
outcomes that fall within (Eyler & Giles, 1999).
Academic Outcomes
Some of the academic based outcomes of college that are impacted by service–learning include
knowledge application, content understanding, critical thinking, and even grade point average. Astin
and Sax (1998) identified ten academic outcomes affected by service participation, and all ten were
positively affected by service. In their study, grade point average, retention, aspirations for
educational degrees, graduate school prep, general knowledge, discipline knowledge, time devoted
to studying, extra credit, and faculty contact all showed varying increases due to service
participation.
Eyler and Giles (1999) discuss how students in their study perceived themselves to identify social
issues easier due to service–learning participation, which is the first step in critical thinking ability.
Students were also more likely to think critically about these social issues when their service was
linked to a particular social problem. There is little research connected to critical thinking and
service learning, but the small amount that there is indicates some increases in critical thinking
ability.

43. The And The World Wide Web
In chapter 11, the author of our text says, in part: "Learning what is true and what is not true is
harder today than it once was. The difficulty is not because of a lack of information. We have more
information and more points of view available to us than ever in history. A few clicks on any topic
and you get thousands of entries. In fact, perhaps we get too much information. We get so much that
we are often overwhelmed.... A second problem today is that we should not necessarily believe what
we see or hear." He also says: "Our political culture teaches us to learn to be ignorant about
politics." Our generation is one that has more exposure than any prior generation to twenty four hour
reports on multi–media devices. Thanks to the internet and the World Wide Web, we have at our
disposal many viewpoints and a wealth of information. This does not necessarily mean that our
generation is more informed or knowledgeable than prior ones. Not all information we are exposed
to is true or unbiased.
"Learning what is true and what is not true is harder today than it once was". This statement by the
author of our text could refer to the fact that our technology today is so advanced that photographs
and videos can be altered in such a way that no one is the wiser. Just because you are shown a photo
or video does not mean it is a realistic representation of what actually happened. You cannot always
believe what you see. One example of manipulation to a photo is an article in the LA Times

45. A Career In Civic Engagement
After high school I struggled through numerous retail jobs. As fate would have it however, my wife
would introduce me to someone who worked with the Chicago Public Library. I was able to land a
job as a CyberNavigator, assisting patrons with technological issues and promoting digital literacy.
During my time as a CyberNavigator, I worked in numerous underprivileged communities where I
spent most of my time helping patrons find jobs online or applying for financial assistance through
the government websites. Connecting with numerous organizations in the community, I established
my library as a center in the community where patrons could actively come to find assistance on a
number of digital literacy issues. I finally felt a sense of pride in my work and it prepared me for my
future endeavors in civic engagement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

47. Civic Engagement Initiative
The Civic Engagement Initiative
The focal point of current educational trend in the United States is on preparing the leaders of
tomorrow (National Task Force, 2012). Student success has been expanded to include civic
responsibility which is a dimension of the college experience largely ignored until recently (Upcraft,
Gardner, & Barefoot, 2005). The Department of Education has taken this charge and developed the
National Task Force for Democratic and Civic Engagement. This initiative places developing civic
responsibility as a national priority based on the tendency of young people who are often too caught
up in 'narrow collegiate worlds' of their own existence to understand the larger role of being a
contributing member of society (Upcraft, Barefoot & Gardner, 2005). Thus, engagement as a
participating citizen living in community is frequently beyond the scope of young student leaders in
college. Due to this, the government has renewed its interest in creating civic–minded young people
prepared to advocate for change. This has led the charge for a civic engagement initiative
nationwide.
With civic engagement development being initiated nationwide, we must attempt to understand
citizenship in today's world. Citizenship is often a misunderstood concept. ... Show more content on

Charles Quiqly, Executive Director for the Center for Civic Education, has dubbed the current status

Foundation, also coined the paradoxical phrase, 'a citizenless democracy' (National Task Force,
2012). In a time where the United States ranks 139th out of the 172 world democracies in voter
participation, the U.S. needs to reinvent the engaged, contributing citizen within society

49. Importance Of Community Service In Education
This semester I engaged in many different community service and civic engagement activities. The
activity that I did the most frequently would be volunteering in a special needs class room at
Vandever Elementary in Broken Arrow. I went to Broken Arrow Public School and actually know
that teacher that I volunteering with from when I used to peer tutor when I was younger. I peer
tutored from 3rd grade through 10th grade, switching between three main classrooms. It was so nice
to see one of the teachers that I looked up so much to when I was younger and who instilled in me
the joys of teaching. Volunteering in her classroom was very fun and nostalgic, but I do think that
she could have been more proactive with her time management skills. While volunteering in the
classroom, I became very familiar with the classroom's daily schedule and their routines. I found
that there was quite a bit of time wasted in the afternoon. I was not entirely sure if maybe this had to
do with her students and their limits because most of them are only a half day or if it was poor time
management. Although, I think the schedule could easily be accommodated to include more
instructional time if the students in the classroom were able to adjust to that. In the afternoon they
spend a majority of their instructional time watching Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig, or Bookflix. I feel like
if they divided their time as well they did in the morning they could get in a lot more instructional
time. In the mornings

51. Civic Engagement Speech
In June of 2017 a close friend and I established a county–wide political club designed specifically
for teenagers. Our club was founded on the ideals that we thought were most critical for political
success among teenagers. First and foremost, we wanted to encourage teens to get civically
engaged. I believe, vehemently, that through civic engagement, especially among teens, we are able
to bring forward the change the we aspire to. As someone who is absolutely enthralled with
volunteering on campaigns because of the, almost tangible, atmosphere of change that exists in a
campaign office, I believe that civic engagement is of the utmost importance to bringing upon
change. Secondly, we wanted to offer high school students a place where they could air their
frustrations with the current political climate. The last 8, and arguably 12, months have been
incredibly tumultuous. Our current president has chosen to demean and belittle minorities across the
country. As an immigrant I can empathize with the people who are in constant fear of being
deported. My mother is one of these people. While she has been here for more than a decade,
because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We also wanted to teach students in our community the value of getting engaged. Through
engagement, you bring on change, while also making incredible connections. For example, i was
able to reach out to multiple board members of the the Young Democrats of America, when I was
looking for guidance as to how to establish the chapter. This goes to show the power that getting
engaged in the community can have in either the short or long term future. These networking
experiences also connect people who have the experience with people who don't. By connecting
these two groups you are able to greatly reduce the learning curve, and enable the next generation to

An effective high school social studies teacher challenges their students in a way that promotes
authentic intellectual work and thought provoking discussion in the classroom. However, educators
must raise the bar for what they expect out of younger students. Middle school students are capable
of high quality work, but they need guidance. As with other subjects, a basic understanding of
citizenship and civic engagement need to be developed early on in education. After interviewing a
group of middle school social studies students about the importance of civic engagement and the
purpose of social studies, I learned students are not given as many chances to grow into productive
citizens who have formed their own thoughts and opinions until they ... Show more content on

I interviewed three students from the high ability program and three from the lower ability track at
my field placement school. With each response, I found myself thinking of ways to implement these
important issues into lessons in my future social studies classroom. All six students related attending
church regularly, volunteering, and helping the elderly to being a good person. One student defined
citizenship as "everyone doing their part and being the best person they can be." When I asked what
he meant by this definition he explained that a good citizen is nice to others, stands up for what they
believe in, and does not break rules. This student seems to have a clear understanding of right and
wrong. In my own classroom, I would play devil's advocate and try to get this student to see the grey
area between right and wrong. I believe this approach would help the student better communicate
with people who have different ideologies and build their tolerance for dissenting arguments. In a
democratic society, citizens must be able to listen to other perspectives and share their own thoughts
without completely disregarding what they other person has to say. Westheimer and Kane (2004)
suggest schools systems should create citizens who can actively participate in a democratic society;
however, schools often promote service rather than true democratic principles. For example, acts of
compassion and kindness are encouraged instead of social action and social justice. These
characteristics often impede upon "fundamentally important goals for civic educators." Students felt
historical events like the Boston Tea Party and women's suffrage were important, but not as
important as being a good person. Similarly, five students placed the image depicting the Ku Klux

55. Persuasive Essay On A Good Life
People have different images of how a "good life" in our consumer–driven, constantly connected
and the globalized world looks like due to the discordant definition of what a good life entails.
Hence, there are "sensitizing" questions that we consider. First is whether people are the best judges
of their own well–being. This involves subjective versus objective measures of well–being.
Subjective perspective contains a self–reported judgment where individuals express feeling about
themselves. Whereas objective measures of well–being are based on external criteria. For example,
ways of living, fashion, choice of food and etc. The second question debates if a good life is a
moment enjoyed or a life well–lived. A moment is understood as being present in the now and
mindful of the surroundings. For instance, enjoying the nature and time with their families. Whereas
a life well–lived is based on different people's perspective. For example, describing each day as their
first day for the rest of their life. Lastly, is whether happiness is linked with virtue and can one be
happy without being ethical. This argues if people have to be compassionate in order for them to be
happy. The latter statement involves thinking of the study of principles that underlies human
behavior. For example, realizing that Nike is using child labor, would you still be happy to purchase
their products. It would be unethical to support child labor. However, some people believe that the
pursuit of pleasure is

and I have always remembered people calling it the dummy farm. As sad as it may sound, I had
called it the dummy farm too, because it is a recognizable landmark in my area and I had grown up
hearing it being referred to that. I had always wondered how they could dare to let those people
work around such dangerous machinery as a saw mill. My attitudes and beliefs have definitely
changed because of my experience, I found out that these people are no different than I am and
should be treated with respect that I would want to be treated with. The answer to the question of
how they dared to let those people work there is simple. The employees at the mill are just like any
other factory employees. It is always kept clean and maintained and as any other mill has its daily
quota without any "crazy" people running around causing havoc.
Reflect on ways these attitudes and beliefs have changed as a result of working in this diverse
situation and on how you feel this change contributes to your ability to promote civic engagement to
others. Most of the clients under the care of Skills are people who are capable of taking care of
themselves even the clients who are mentally challenged. I guess I thought going into this field that
every client would be unruly and difficult to work with. I found out that is not the case, the client is

63. Social Action At The Lower East Side Tenement Museum
Case study 3: Social action at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum
Ruth J. Abram, who wanted to create a museum centered upon an experience common to the
majority of Americans, founded the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Abram believed that the
immigrant experience was something that diverse groups of people could relate to and unite together
on, moving Americans "to participate in a national conversation with similarly situated,
contemporary immigrants and other 'outsiders'"(Abram 2005:21). As we can see, Abram has been
dedicated from the start to civic engagement through community collaboration.
Abram continually ensures that the museum has the resources and insight needed for community
engagement. This is done in several ways. For instance, Abram and the Board of Trustees are
committed to ensuring that there is funding for not only the various programs the museum engage
in, but also for the staff's needs. They are committed to having a diverse and inclusive team,
comprised of individuals from multiple backgrounds. Furthermore, they have 32 full time staff
positions and 30 part–time docents (Abram 2005). It is this kind of commitment that has contributed
to successful and sustainable community collaboration. Staff members often speak more than one
language and have experienced many of the same issues that past and present immigrants have faced
such as welfare (Abram 2005). This brings in diverse experiences and stories into the museum
space.

65. Summary In Dana Gioia'sWhy Literature Matters?
Against the downturn in American literary compassion which encompasses the reading industry in a
negative fashion, in his article "Why literature matters", Dana Gioia has depicted reading as a core
asset in any intellect–based society or civic spheres. By lending his American readers' ears on the
claims voiced by prominent figures, the author aims to show young readers how their growing
dislike toward literature will ensure future occupational hardships and poor social engagement.
The article starts with Dana Gioia scheming the extreme difference between the changes
accomplished by art and other social facets (income, college turnout, information accessibility) in
American society. By using contradicted phrases in the first paragraph: "diminishing" versus "rise to
an unforeseen level", "ballooned", "enormously increase"; the author highlights the disparity in
American development pace and how attention is being shifted away from artistic appeal. While
some may think that this claim is evident less, the author cites the 2002 Survey of Public
Participation in the Arts, a study which shows that "arts participation by Americans has declined for
eight of the nine major forms that are measured" in the study. This decline has been more severe in
young adults from ages eighteen to twenty–four, and it is especially worrisome when accounting for
other parts of a successful person's life. This fact gives some background information to the
arguments in the article and can make the article easier to understand especially for people who
haven't learned about this phenomenon yet. In a way, this can be the base of a pyramid of arguments
presented in the article.
After successfully driving readers' attention towards the issue addressed, Dana Gioia goes on with
the discussion of the effects of reading on the current occupational scenario where the working
hierarchy does not appear as a single entity, but as two separated blocks instilled with different
verses of argument. In doing so, the author could comprehensively inspect how reading comes to
affect all classes from the working community. Following a downward trajectory, the author first
discusses about the uppermost layer where managers and leaders reside. Reciting the

71. Civic Engagement And Citizen Engagement
Part I: At first, any participation with democracy in the United States would be appreciated. It is so
vital, and some realizes it, and some not. But, it is really still vital to judge any policy, and so every
and each idea is always needed. Most people, unfortunately, cannot realizes how important it is for
our democracy. Kraft and Furlong states a lot of information and idea about the importance of civic
engagement and/or citizen engagement with voting and judging the decisions and policies Kraft and
Furlong, 2015). There are many factors why citizens cannot or would not participate with politics.
At first, people tend to being impassive, so they do not even read news about politics in newspapers
and magazines. They even do not like to vote by giving their free time as a sacrifice to democracy.
The others, who participate with politics, mostly analyze every and each policy. After analyzing and
judging with plenty of brainstorming, they can object the policy, make it better with their new ideas,
or support the policy. If they do it so, it would theoretically an opportunity to participate with
democracy all we need, and this would be a democratic way (Black, 2014). Citizen engagement is
an issue to which we should be paying attention, it they look being impassive. Motivating every and

75. Community Life And Civic Engagement
Community life and civic engagement are a huge responsibility of citizens, although it is not
required by citizens, it is an important aspect of a proper citizen. Residents of a community have the
constant responsibility of making the society around them reflect an advance in the eminence of
lives in the community. The simple duty of any citizen is to give to the common good. Civic
responsibilities are achieved by volunteering and choice. Volunteering, involving in positive
organizations and aids, or tutoring people in certain subjects, are all ways that people can subsidize
to the good of the community. Small deeds that seem to prosper someone in some way or the other
is still a way of helping. To learn something from the assistance that one does to another, the deed
does not have to be big, as long as the person providing the assistance is doing it with a good heart
they can always acknowledge a lesson. Compassion and love is necessary in helping others. When
people have the opportunity to help others they may not always get a gift in return, sometimes they
may not even get a reply back. This is when the person has to realize that the purpose of helping
someone is not for the thank you or the gift, but is for the satisfaction of their soul, betterment of the
other, and the ability to learn a lesson. Assisting people needs to be done in a thoughtful and
effective way for it to create a lasting impact on his/her self and on society itself.
