Human trafficking
Introduction
Cases of human trafficking have been experienced for a long time in many countries.
Taking an example, children may be traded for labour in industries, men for hard labour like
working in mines, women and young girls for sexual activities. Victims of human trafficking
are considered as slaves, while they are taken away from which are familiar to them and face
with unknown cruel reality. The victims usually have no option but to work, since their legal
documents are taken away from them. The most unstable and poorest countries tend to suffer
a lot of human trafficking incidents.
Women are usually the victims sexual trafficking. This may happen locally in a
country or internationally. This kind of exploitation includes prostitution, forced sexual
interactions to bidders, and pornography for the exchange of money or anything of value to
the trafficker. This trafficking may not be noted by many people, but it is highly active. The
most visible type is prostitution in the streets, where the sex slaves are forced to engage in
sexual activity with clients and come back with amount of money or else they face stated
consequences. Other than street prostitution, there is also the unseen kind where the women
work in high end areas like in private residents for the elite in society. As for the traffickers,
they remain active so as to monitor their workers’ progress. They tend to operate in areas like
spas, strip clubs and massage parlours (Denton 17).
Surname 2
The largest group of people who compose the sex trafficking is mature women, then
young girls. Men cover a very minimal percentage. One may wonder how easily these
women agree to be sex slaves. With the world’s crucial economy, traffickers take advantage
of this situation and lure vulnerable women with empty promises like offering them good
jobs in other countries or better educational opportunities. Not all victims are conned by
traffickers but are sold off by friends, boyfriends, sometimes parents. The victims tend to
pass through many traffickers. Taking an example, say a woman is traded off from
Kazakhstan, then is passed to another trafficker in Russia, and then passed to another
trafficker in Colombia. This causes confusion to the victim as she is disoriented and does not
know where she currently is.
These victims undergo a lot of suffering. They feel degraded and also go through
psychological torture. This form of suffering is shown in the condition when women do not
have enough supply of basic needs like food, water and shelter, they are physically abused by
both traffickers and clients . Moreover, women are also deprived of their freedom. Any
human being held captive can do anything to get their freedom back by running away
(Yokoyama 30). The traffickers tend to threaten the women by saying that they will kill their
families and friends if they try to come back home. With such threats coming their way, the
women continue working and since they are not familiar with the culture of the country they
are in, they cannot share their situation with commoners.
Therefore, while being in such a situation, the women may fall into depression and
frustration. In most cases, before these victims are sold off to the clients, the traffickers rape
them for their own pleasure. Some victims are scared and cooperative, while others are
stubborn. The latter are drugged so as to be weak while servicing the clients. When a victim
is ‘fully on board’, she tends to service an average of approximately thirty men in a day. This
brings the trafficker a good amount of money. Another industry that may support this activity
Surname 3
is sex tourism (Denton 15). This is where people travel with the aim of having sex. This may
encourage the exploitation of many women sexually. In this form of tourism, men mostly
travel. This leads to a very rapid spread of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS.
Mental and emotional well being of a woman is affected when she is a sex slave. It
can be showcased in cases when she is ashamed of her body, some show grief and pain for
they have not seen their loved ones for a long time, loneliness, thoughts of suicide and fear
just to name a few. With such emotions, the victims usually experience lack of sleep, Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and anxiety (Bernat and Winkeller 186). These can be
quite a load to carry in one plate not only for ladies but for any human being. Hence the
victims turn to alcohol and drugs to suppress the suffering.
Conclusion
This inhuman trade-off of women causes the breakdown of a society. This can be
explained in terms of the women and young girls being plucked out of their families. This
brings about sadness among the family members and at times also rivalry. Society is also
affected by sex trafficking because the health section is burdened sometimes with sex slaves
who have been saved. Due to the congestion, hospitals may be rendered as ignorant by the
society, and if the situation is not solved, bad light tends to be shone towards the government.
Sex trafficking is wrong and harmful to women. All citizens of all countries should be aware
of these activities and stay alert so as to save the women in all societies worldwide.
