Comparison Of Grendel And Frankenstein
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Similarly, if a being is
never provoked by man, will it become a monster? The latter is a question that is put into focus
throughout Gardner's Grendel and Shelley's Frankenstein. The reader learns of Grendel, and of
Frankenstein's creation, and must determine if they are truly monsters or merely a product of the
world they live in. It is very easy to take one glance at the seemingly heinous crimes committed by
Grendel and Frankenstein's creation, and based off of this, deem them to be monsters. However, it is
the actions and words of man that transform both Grendel, and Frankenstein's creation into
monsters. Both Grendel, and Frankenstein's creations go through personal transformations
throughout their lives. They both begin life as innocent creatures with no intention to wreak havoc.
Victor Frankenstein created his creature and then immediately ran away from it in fear. In reality, the
creature just wanted to be loved and "His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds,
while a grin wrinkled his cheeks" (Shelley 59). The creature was brought to life, and his first instinct
was to emit a loving smile, but he was met with a scream of terror. Similarly, Grendel began his life
as a righteous and pure creature. When Grendel was approached by drunken men wielding battle–
axes, he "sank to my knees, crying, 'Friend! Friend!'" (Gardner 52). This proves that Grendel's initial
instinct was to befriend the men, despite their hostile approach. While the men continued to hack at
Grendel he merely "held up a body for protection" (Gardner 52) instead of fighting back. Grendel
could have easily overpowered and killed the men if he wanted to but he chose to simply protect
himself. Both creatures started off as innocent and pure until man got involved. Grendel could only
take so much neglect and abuse before he transformed into the monster that readers recognize him to
be. The actions of man were nothing short of monstrous, and they caused Grendel to turn into a
monster. The men did not allow Grendel into the Mead Hall and they tried to kill him whenever they
saw him. Even when man was not doing something directly to Grendel, their

Chapter Three Of A Monster
Chapter Three A Monster in My Side We tore through the night down dark country roads, wind
slamming into the pickup. Rain lashed the windshield. I didn't know how Mom could see anything,
but she kept her foot on the pedal. Each time there was a flash of lightning, I glanced at Simon
sitting in the backseat, and I wondered if I'd gone mad or if he was wearing a robe, cone–shaped hat,
and elf shoes. All I could think to say was, "So, um, you and my dad know each other?" Simon's
gaze flitted to the rearview mirror, though there were no cars behind us. "Yeah, sure," he said. "We
work together." "Oh, so what exactly do you do?" "That doesn't matter right now." "Then why–"
"The less you know, the fewer monsters you'll attract," Simon said, like that should be perfectly
obvious. "At least that's what it says in the book." "Monsters–wait a minute, what do you mean?"
The howling rose up again from somewhere behind the truck, closer than before. Whatever was
chasing us was still on our trail. "Aiden," my mom said, "there's too much to explain and not enough
time. We have to get you to safety." "Safety from what? Who's after me?" "Oh, nobody much,"
Simon said. "Just Renwick and a few of his minions." "Simon!" "Sorry, Ms. Greene. Can you drive
a little faster, please?" I tried to wrap my mind around what was going on, but I couldn't do it. I
knew this wasn't a nightmare. My eyes were open. Mom made a hard right. We turned sharply onto
a narrow road, racing past darkened houses, wooded

The Monster : The Meaning Of The Monster
They are under beds, hiding in the dark, and slithering in the sea. The word, "monster", has a
specific meaning to it that most associate with a big, frightening figure. However, use of the word
monster has changed throughout time do to pagan influences and American slang. It is still
associated with a beastly creature, but can be used to describe amazing feats and wonders as the old
French word once did. The definition of Monster has stayed consistent due to storytelling, yet
evolved from its humble beginnings.
Old French used the word, "mostre", to describe a "prodigy or marvel" in the 12th century (OED 1).
"Mostre" came directly from the Latin who used "monstrum" as a "divine omen" ("Monster."
Dictionary.com). In certain cultures, abnormal animals were a sign of impending doom for their
villages and life. These abnormal animals have given way for the storybook monsters where the
most common definition is found. The Oxford English Dictionary refers to the noun as:
A mythical creature which is part animal and part human, or combines elements of two or more
animal forms, and is frequently of great size and ferocious appearance. Later, more generally: any
imaginary creature that is large, ugly, and frightening. (def.1)
However, American slang has taken the original term and uses it as a way to represent something
"remarkably good" (OED 7). The connotation of the word is a complete shift from this idea of a
scary monster, but instead a description of success. This idea of an

Should Aliens Be Legal?
Aliens have always been a curiosity for us as a species. Tall slender body, glowing bright green,
swollen head, deep black eyes; all characteristics of the generic alien. From a young age, we are
taught that there might be someone else out there in the universe; we just haven't met them yet. The
question of whether or not we believe in aliens is a hard question to answer because we just do not
know. There is no substantial amount of evidence to support either claim. However, the thought that
another form of life might exist out in the universe is a diverse theory; room for extrapolation.
Curiosity has driven us to create all sorts of alien situations and allows us to think deeply about all
the different ways aliens could look like, all the different activities aliens could be able to do, and all
the different reasons aliens might make contact with us. Curiosity has also driven us to think about
exactly how much more advanced these "others" might be. Since the beginning of the 20th century,
the technological level of aliens in film and popular culture has developed from primitive beings to
full force technological masterminds– mirroring our own technological narrative. When I hear the
word "monster," the first image that comes to mind is the cute, illustrated, blue, white spotted
monster from the children's book Monsters Don't Eat Broccoli by Barbara Jean Hicks. My mother
would read me this book as a child before bedtime. She did this because the monsters drawn in the

Physical And Psychological Aspects Of A Monster
My understanding of a monster when I began this semester was that a monster is an evil being who
can have physical and psychological aspects that add to the evil. The most basic form of monster is
physically unattractive and has general physical deformities. These deformities included fanged
teeth, large claws, and super strength. Psychologically monsters behave recklessly because they do
not abide by the social limitations that everyone else does. Monsters excel in disguising themselves
from society and hiding in the shadows. They crave darkness to shelter them from societal duties.
This craving is derived from either a mental illness or an innate sense to try out being evil. Monsters
to me were those of fairy tales and scary movies such as werewolves and serial killers. The physical
and mental attributes of monsters can be seen in the novel Reason to Breathe by Rebecca Donovan.
Physical attributes of a monster are the first thing that draws my attention when reading a novel or
watching a movie. The classic view of a monster is found in old novels or movies that deal with
things such as Frankenstein or Dracula, and even zombies. The most terrifying in my brain though is
the monster that hides from everyone because physically the being would not be recognized. Reason
to Breathe is a novel that describes Emma, a girl who bears the weight of abuse and deals with it so
her cousins can keep their mom, her aunt Carol. In the end, Emma wins her freedom from Carol.

Forever Oasis Short Story
Forever, Oasis
Some things in history we do not know, listen closely as I tell you the forgotten tale of what
happened 100 years ago. In the oasis of Saris, Aria, Eliss, and Faron lived the best lives they could
live until evil came upon their land.
"Aria wake up! you're going to be late for sand surfing practice"."Ok i'm coming stop making such a
big fuss Eliss". Aria, the otran (one fourth human and three fourths otter), sprinted down the old
gravel road and scurried upon her sand seal. They got to practice 10 minutes late, and had to stand
there while the coach threatened to kick them off the team. Besides the yelling, they both had a nice
practice. After practice they walked Aria back to the shop. "Bye, and don't get yourself killed
exploring. Oh and meet me at the secret waterfall" Aria stated. "Don't poke yourself with a needle
Aria". "I'll be more careful this time". Meanwhile, a monster snuck into the town and started to set
shops on fire, including hers. She noticed the fire, but not in time. Her shop was now covered with
flames. She stood there as her shop transformed to ashes. She needed to run or else she would be a
pile of ashes herself. Running is exactly what she did. She ran to her fox friend Eliss who was at the
waterfall as waiting for her. From what it looked like he was praying. Aria tapped him on the
shoulder and screamed "WE NEED TO GET FRIKKIN OUTA HERE!".They probably would have
escaped to Trinn city if it wasn't for the mob of monsters surrounding the town gate.
As they ran through the desert looking for safety Aria asked Eliss "why were you praying back there
at the waterfall?". Eliss replied with a sigh. Then a tear came running down his face followed by
another. Finally he opened his mouth and said "m–my mom got torn from her bones, and eaten alive
by one of the sand spiders. You should have heard her scream for mercy". Tears streamed down his
red, furry, foxish face. After they stopped for a sip of water (from the water bottle Eliss found on the
gravel road) they decided to camp out for the night under a large rock ahead. They awoke to a pig
looking monster right above head. He was getting ready to devour us in a single bite. Eliss and Aria
popped up and ran as fast as their

Of Prejudice In Frankenstein And Mary Shelley's Lusus...
"It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his
own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human
being," John Joseph Powell. From Margaret Atwood's Lusus Naturae, to Mary Shelley's
Frankenstein, and Dan Barry's The Lost Children of Tuam, each story more tragic than the last, all
share a common thread of prejudice. Be it societal, ethical, or religious, prejudices are the driving
force behind the creation of what many regard as "monsters". This constant label of shame isolates
its victims and inflicts self–perception of inferiority, which in turn compels a hardening of one's
disposition towards society.
Because of her rare affliction, the main character of Margaret Atwood's Lusus Naturae experiences a
complete disconnect from not only her family, but also the world around her. The disdain directed
towards her was palpable. She notes that her cat "was the only living creature who wanted to be
close to me," and even then she questions whether her cat was drawn to her or the smell of "old
dried–up blood" (Atwood 3) that was a result of her uncommon diet. Furthermore, she goes so far as
to characterize her own mother's relationship to her "as if to a hangnail, a wart" (Atwood 3). Her
own self worth is obliterated by the prevailing sense of shame that she believes she has brought to
her family. However, under these conditions she resolves to "harden [herself] to loneliness,"
(Atwood 4) and detaches from society altogether, making her home in the woods like an apparition
among the trees.
Her place as an outcast to society affords her new insight to the rationale of the common folk.
Consequently, after her quarrel with the man in the woods she reflected, "When demons are required
someone will always be found to supply the part, and whether you step forward or are pushed is all
the same in the end" (Atwood 5). This observation illustrates the impact that societal prejudices have
had on her way of thinking, and emphasizes how she grew to fit the role that had been prescribed to
her. In other words, people find comfort in the belief that monsters are the stuff of legends when in
reality they are bred out of one's own

Analysis Of The Book ' St. Lucy 's Home For Girls Raised...
Kanye West said it best, "Everybody knows I'm a M*f**ing monster" and honestly, as humans we
are.
In Seven Monster Theses, Jeffery Cohen develops an idea that "monsters" are essential to society. In
fact, they construct what is "normal", "rational", and "civilized". Specifically, "monsters" are
foundational to how we view ourselves. "Monsters" contain all the traits deemed unacceptable and
odd. It can be concluded that every outlier is a "monster". In St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by
Wolves, Karen Russell tells the story of a pack of wolf girls who are transitioning into young ladies.
Russell delves into society's need for conformity, gender roles, and change. The story is told from
the point of view of the middle wolf girl, Claudette, and follows her on her journey from wolf to
woman. In relation to Jeffery Cohen's idea of monster culture, Claudette's journey applies to Thesis
IV "The Monster Dwells at the Gates of Difference" and part of Thesis I "The Monster's Body is a
Cultural Body". Claudette is torn between two worlds and she has to learn how to successfully
"move between the two cultures". Through Cohen's theses, Karen Russell uses character
development and dialogue to depict the inner and outer battle of societal femininity and
individualized femininity and the consequence of accepting either side. The presence of "monsters"
are essential for this acceptance.
To build "the gate of difference", Russell makes Claudette resistant to the culture change. This

Monter Inc. Movie Essay
Reverse Monsterfication
Throughout the length of the movie, I was taken back to my childhood when there were monsters in
my own closet. Over the years, the monsters have all died and been replaced by just as scary
skeletons, so my closet is still full. However, to a young child monsters are still lurking in the
shadows, and they still make the floor creak. The approach taken by the writers of this film is one of
uniqueness and of originality. By successfully juxtaposing the situation between monster and child,
the writers were able to confront a touchy subject head on. This was reached through a combination
of differences represented by the monsters in the movie and between the child's impression of
monsters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Behind all of the flashy animation and the famous voice–overs there are an infinite amount of
messages and information forming ideas for the young child to grasp on to.
It is the strong story told in the movie which makes it work for children to understand. This story
line could be told by Joseph Bruchac while beating on a drum, and it could give the child the very
same lessons and ideas as did the movie. That is not to say that the animation and other effects
added by the producers does the story harm, just that the story is strong enough to carry the movie
on its own. There are certainly some lessons to be learned in the movie as well. Perhaps the
strongest lesson taught in the movie is that you should never judge a book by its cover. What may be
perceived as undesirable or unpleasant, may actually turn out to be lovely and desirable. The other
lesson, which is obviously trying to be taught, is to not be scared of monsters. Whether or not the
movie achieves this goal I do not know. In the human world scenes, the monsters were always very
fierce and scary, and in the monster world, children appear to be very unwanted and even hunted.
Perhaps the best teacher of this lesson is the large bear named Sullivan. He is the one who shows the
child audience that all though he is a monster, he is full of love and peace and concern for the safety
of the young girl.

Analysis Of Victor Frankenstein The Real Monster
Who's the Real Monster?
The story of Frankenstein was written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley in the year 1818. The story
depicts the life of the character Victor Frankenstein, who spends years creating an unnamed
creature. Victor abandons the creature the moment he awakens and the creature is then left to live
life on his own because is rejected by humanity. The creature kills several people and eventually
leads to Victor's indirect death. Throughout the story, the creature is depicted as a hideous,
monstrous and evil creature, while Victor is depicted as the victim of his wrath. At first glance, the
creature seems like the bigger monster of the story, but as we begin to view it from a deeper
perspective we discover a different side. In this essay, I plan to argue that contrary to popular belief,
Victor Frankenstein is the real monster of the story.
The Oxford Dictionary defines the word monster as an "An inhumanly cruel or wicked person."
There were many cruel and wicked things that Victor did to the creature. Firstly, Victor decided to
give the creature a hideous body. Why would he not create his specimen to be beautiful and well
formed in every way? It was cruelty on the behalf of Victor to hideously deform his creation. He
made his creature to be a hideously deformed monster which every human being shunned.
Throughout the story Victor also considers himself to have a God Complex. Victor would be
considered to have a God Complex because he firmly believed that he has the

Without a pause for thought, he concluded that he had one option – RUN! The floor shook as he

Compare And Contrast Victor And Frankenstein
The contrast and comparison between, Victor and the monster affects the plot, the theme and the
character motivation is also affected. The two characters of the book Frankenstein are Victor and the
later introduced monster. These two character come from a very different plot each but this small
change in the plot affects the story in a big way. Their specific theme of the book also matters in the
story in a way that impacts the reader's emotion itself. Lastly the character motivations play a key
role in making the characters' do certain things that they may not fully want to have done.
The plots of each character determines how the story can go. Victor is seen as a motivated,
intelligent man that pursues his passion with all his might. This seeking of passion is what led Victor
into doing what he had to do. The quote on chapter 5 that was said by victor was "I had desired it
with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream
vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart." the key word is had. Victor is saying
that he had desired it, meaning that what was his passion before does not fulfill him anymore. He
also talks about how his dream had vanished. The word vanished is a metaphor to add more
excitement into the reader. Its talking about how his dream no longer exists within him. It is ironic
that Victor had realized his mistake too late. He had accomplished his goal, but only after that did he
truly understand what he had done. The characters' actions affected the plot of the story of a very
high aspect. If not for Victos undying ambition this would not have happened. This points out the
significance of the plot and how it shaped the characters' actions to a point of no return. The monster
on the other hand, in chapter 15 had said "Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that
instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed?" yet
another use of metaphor was used in this quote. The word spark symbolizes life. This shows that
comparison between the speech pattern between the two characters. They have been put in a similar
plot that makes them feel certain emotions that make them do specific things.

Fear Will Make You Want to Have Violence and Suspicion Why do people act out in violence and

street, in the late summer, a meteor flies over Maple Street, USA. After it passes everybody part of
the neighborhood is surprised that the all the power is off. Steve, a man that lives on Maple Street,
wants to go into town to see if the police know what is going on. But, when he tries to turn his car
on it doesn't turn on. Pete Van Horn, thin man, cuts through the back yard to see if the powers on in
the next street over. Tommy, a 14 year old, tells the others that they shouldn't go to town because the
people in the meteor don't want them to. They also had a family, that looked like humans, to look
over the neighborhood until the monsters came. Everybody wonders where he got that gibberish.
Tommy answers, that he got it from all the comic books he read. Can the people of Maple Street

The Creation Is A Monster
1. Look up the word monster in multiple dictionaries in order to get a full understanding of what the
word means. Discuss in both literal and figurative terms whether the Creation is a monster.
The word "monster" means a being of unnatural size with unnatural features that is sometimes
imaginary and often causes fear due to wickedness, ugliness, and cruelty. In literal terms, the
Creation is a monster. Based on the definition, he is of unnatural size and features as the Creation is
characterized by "its gigantic stature, and the deformity of its aspect" (50). Further, people fear the
Creation due to his deformity as stated "the unnatural hideousness of [his] person was the chief
object of horror with those who had formerly beheld [him])" (94). In further explanation, the
Creation can also be considered monstrous because he was responsible for the death of many people
such as William, Justine, and Henry. In figurative terms, however, the Creation is not entirely a
monster. Though he did intend to cause harm as he declares war against humans (97), much of his
spite a cruelty spurs from his lack of maturity and the environments he was faced with. The Creation
came into the world and was immediately faced with rejection. His own creator "turned from him in
disgust" (93) and the villagers he grew to love "struck [him] violently with a stick" (97). He had no
friend and no one teach him that killing was wrong no matter how much emotions get the better of
one. Much of this violent

Beowulf. Although he can win other humans with his wisdom and power, with no weapons, it's still
not really extraordinary for a warrior. Epic always contains monsters, dragons or things are
mythological, not really exists in our daily life. If a warrior can defeat monsters with his power and
brave, even no weapons, he is absolutely a remarkable warrior. Epic contains great fights and
battles. Battles with monsters and dragons are more convincing to indicate a great warrior than
battles with men. So that monsters in Beowulf share an important role ... Show more content on

He holds the treasure but can do nothing on them. A good king is a ring–giver, would give treasure
to warriors who distribute in the battle or working well. Oppositely, the dragon decided to destroy
the city because someone steals one of his treasure grail. He represents greed and malice. He is the
destroyer, and the king is the creator of the city. Although Beowulf finally defeat the dragon, he gets
the fatal injury and died. It can still indicate that the illustriousness of Beowulf, because he is the
king, and sacrifices for the country.
All of these three monsters in Beowulf are the bad side of the society. At the first two battles,
Beowulf defeats Grendel and Grendel's mother. And what he does after is cut their head off. It is the
most evident thing he can do to show his victory. But beheaded is an impolite behavior to a dead
person. It tells that monsters will not be compassionated by human.
Beowulf, the kings and the warriors are the good side. In Christian, monsters symbolize the evil,
demon. It seems they represent the "evil" in the story, and Beowulf represents the "good" in the
story. The story is about the battles between "good" and "evil" in the society. The author wants the
Christian value can be highlighted in the story. "Good" can defeat "evil" is absolutely the right thing.

Chief Hoppers: A Short Story

Analysis Of Mandeville's Travels And Bisclavret
Monsters have always fascinated readers because of their mysterious origins and motives. These
strange and unknown characteristics lead us to ask questions and really think about how humans
justify their actions and consider what is and isn't moral. Monsters also help us come to a conclusion
about who we are as people in a functioning society. In the works of Mandeville's Travels and
Bisclavret, the authors help us discover who we are to unify us as a community, give us a sense of
security, and identifying monstrous qualities amongst people and creatures. In Mandeville's Travels,
John Mandeville tells us his stories of the discovery of the many monsters he finds across the world.
Through his stories we discover who we are as people through his monsters. His monsters tell us
what we are not, and by doing this he tells us who we are, educated, civilized, kind, and caring
people. In Mandeville's first encounter with a monster, the Melk are described as incredibly cruel
people who take pleasure in murder and making other people suffer, "There are wicked and cruel
folk there too. For they have no delight or pleasure in anything except slaughtering people to drink
their blood. And the man who can kill the greatest number of men is the most respected and
worthiest among them."(Mandeville, 134). Through this explanation we understand how bizarre of a
ritual this is because no one in their right mind would take such pleasure in taking someone's life.
Not only does this describe

Awarded for the Best Original Screenplay and Best Film at the Australian Academy of Cinema and
Television Arts (AACTA) ceremony, director Jennifer Kent brings to life a unique form of horror in
her psychological thriller film, The Babadook. The film focuses on a mother and her child as they go
through a dark period of their lives. The mother, whose name is Amelia, lost her husband in a car
crash when they were on the way to the hospital for her to give birth to her son, Samuel. Due to the
death of her husband, Amelia battles with the anxiety of raising Samuel as a single mother. Just like
any child, Samuel has a perpetual fear of monsters which causes him to react violently. This reaction
causes a great deal of stress for Amelia, and because of his behavior towards the monsters, friends
and family are distant from the two. When she thought it could not get any worse, they find a
mysterious book in the house and begin reading it. The book discusses a creature called the
Babadook or Mr. Babadook who, if you deny him, will become stronger and eventually consume
you from the inside out. Terrified and unsure of what to do, Amelia attempts to get rid of the book,
but it somehow reappears. As the film continues, Amelia becomes more and more consumed by the
influence of the Babadook. She becomes violent towards Samuel, and at one point, she screams and
shouts vulgar expressions towards him and starts terrorizing him. She becomes possessed and the
very monster Samuel is scared of,

Characteristics Of The Real Monster In Frankenstein
Everyone has different views on what they believe a monster is. When we hear the word monster we
usually think of a big gross imaginary creature. It's natural for us to think this way because most are
taught at a young age that that's what a monster is. No one really tells us that people can also be
monsters. You would call someone a monster when they do sick and inhuman things. Who was the
real monster in Frankenstein, was it Victor or was it the monster Victor created?
Victor Frankenstein is who I believe should be labeled as the monster. Victor has all the
characteristics of a monster he is inhumane and doesn't remorse or care about things that a human
being should care about. He was a crazy scientist who then decided create this "monster" and let him
off on his own into the world. He spent two years infusing life into an inanimate body that is
monstrous. When he first infused life into the monster the awful appearance of him scared him and
he instantly runs to his room to try and go to sleep. When Victor had woke up the monster was
standing over his bed staring at him and that's when he left the monster and showed him rejection.
Victor was very selfish and inconsiderate of others when the monster was seeking revenge on him it
wasn't just hurting him it was effecting others around him.
However, the monster is labeled as a monster because of his appearance. When something doesn't
look like everyone else or something we are familiar with then it's a monster. The monster was 7–
foot–tall; he had yellow skin scarcely covered with muscle and arteries beneath; his hair was a
lustrous black; his teeth where nice and white; his eyes where horrid and watery; his lips where
black (M. Shelley 35). Everyone judges the monster before they actually get to know just because of
his looks and he can't help how he looks. His creator made him look the way that he does which is
why he gets labeled as a monster. The monster doesn't just do bad thing when he was in the woods
watching the cottagers have to go and get wood every morning, he saw that they didn't like doing so
he would go get the wood for them and leave it on the porch so that they could get other things
done. The was also a time where there was a girl drowning and

With Killua's intimidating presence and the roadblocks, if you call them that, dwindling in challenge
the three were able to fly through the rest of the Ruin's chambers. After a while, Flowey stopped
them in a room vastly different from what the rest of the Ruins had to offer, he motioned for Gon to
set him down.
"This is the first room of the Ruins, if you go further you'll end up at the entrance to the
Underground."
"So where we fell down?"
"You got it, just be careful of the big monster. See ya!" Flowey plunged underground while Gon and

Gon stepped back to face Killua. "Killua...don't be mad at me, okay?" He said, his usual cheerful
tone was drenched in such a level of seriousness that completely threw Killua off guard. He didnt
even have the chance to open his mouth, before being pushed him onto the ground.
Gon positioned his body over Killua, his shadow covering his chest and eyes locked onto Killua's

and pounded his skin raw.
Though Gon's words trembled from the sheer amount of pain he was shouldering, his eyes stood

My Personal Note On My Life

With the bag of books in my hand I headed back out into the cold. I parked kinda far since I don 't

Moreau Human Nature
There are monsters on this island and they look just like you, they will try to make you think the
animals are the monsters, but they're lying to you. The fact is, the humans on the island are the
actual monsters, they just represent different aspects of human nature. The ugly side of humanity
that most try to ignore is all too prevalent in the form of the beast men who are the result of this
depravity. The true monster of the island is human nature, which is revealed through three different
representations: Moreau, Prendick, and Montgomery.
Moreau believes that the end justifies the means, no matter how deplorable the means end up
becoming. He is the monster that represents the dark side of humanity, lacking traditional morals,
and human ego. He will continue on his immoral path for as long as it interests him. He even affirms
"To this day I have never troubled about the ethics of the matter" (56). This is only one aspect of
Moreau's depravity. It is revealed that Moreau is the person who hypnotized the Law into the beast
people. His ego shines through in this revelation, since part of the Law is, "'His is the House of Pain.
His is the Hand that makes. His is the Hand that wounds. His is the Hand that heals'" (43). Moreau's
ego is what leads him to deify himself to them after he has vivisected them into their human shape.

This description of fans exhibits the intriguing nature and great interest so called fans has for their

Jensen counters the view that the popular press portrays fans as 'dangerous' by approaching fans as
"ordinary people immersed in everyday life, and reveals the deep dilemmas about modern life that
generate such negative characterizations." (Lisa. A. Lewis 1992: 2)
Lawrence Grossberg approaches fandom as:
"a special relationship between audience and culture in which the pleasure of consumption is
superseded by an investment in difference. In fandom, moods and feelings become organized and
particular objects or personas take on significance. By participating in fandom, fans construct
coherent or cultural activity of their own making which is, potentially, a source of empowerment in
struggles against oppressive ideologies and the unsatisfactory circumstances of everyday life." (Lisa.
A. Lewis 1992: 3)
Both Grossberg and Jensen seem to agree on the fact that fandom is merely about giving people the
opportunity to create a new identity for themselves and to move away from the negative aspects of
their lives or society. This could not be said for other general media audiences. As mentioned above
"fans" are the individuals who know almost every aspect of the movie stars life and who have the
latest merchandise from their favourite movie star or musician. This could be down to the fact that
fans want to escape the struggles of their everyday life and to feel connected

Monsters Created by Uncontrolled Emotions: Examples of the...
Monsters are often part of the imagination; they are beasts that physically look hideous. Greek
mythology is full of monsters that the hero like Theseus or Hercules has to kill in order to achieve
his glorious fate. However, there are other types of monsters, not based on their physical attributes,
but because of the acts that they commit. Jean Racine in his play Phedre shows these psychological
monsters who, based on appearance, look like any other character in the story, but it is their actions
and thoughts that make them monstrous. The mythological set of the play, which takes place in
ancient Greece, highlights the difference between a physical monster, like the Minotaur, and the
monstrosity that is within some of the characters like Phedre, Oenone or Theseus and is much worse
than any kind of beast. After all, it is easy to fight the hideousness when one can see it, but when it
is invisible; it lurks in the shadows and only in the end, when it has fulfilled its monstrous desire,
becomes visible to others. However, as the play shows, when the invisible monster becomes visible,
it is too late to fight it, leaving behind a tragedy that not only wrenches the heart but is a warning
against the immorality and rashness exemplified by the monstrous characters of Thesee, Oenone and
Phedre. Phedre, as the title of the play suggests, is the main character of the story. She is the wife of
Theseus and the stepmother of Hippolyte. At the opening of the play, Phedre is dying not

Dangerous. Monsters may harm, kill, destroy.
Irrational; unintelligible. The emotions and actions of monsters go beyond the supposed human

Inhuman. Monsters lie outside tidy concepts of what counts as human.
Unnatural. Monsters don't fit into categories. We break boundaries.

Real Life Couple's Trouble in The Stockton Civic Theatre’s...
The Stockton Civic Theatre's production of Avenue Q last Thursday night depicts an accurate
portrayal of life after graduating from college. The protagonist is a fresh out–of–college puppet
named Princeton who is trying to seek a job and housing in the "outer borough of New York City."
After finding a cheap and unoccupied room in an apartment located on Avenue Q, Princeton
befriends his neighbors who are made up of both people and puppets. Princeton meets and falls in
love with an elementary teacher, Kate Monster. Together they face the same real–life problems
couples deal with in present times. Throughout the whole performance, Princeton is constantly
troubled about finding his purpose in life. Princeton, who is played by Jacob Bronson has the ability
to connect with the audience despite being visible holding the puppet on stage. Bronson is not only a
good actor, but also excels in his singing. He has a very loud and distinctive voice which is proven
in the beginning of the play, "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?" Kate Monster, who is
played by Randi Linee also has the ability to connect with the audience even though she is clearly
visible holding the puppet. She gives Kate a very vibrant and expressive character and uses hand
movements to help show Kate's emotions. Kate's hand gestures are not a big distraction unlike the
other actors holding puppets. Linee's representation of the emotion of being distraught over love is

Throughout Fairytales there are various mythical creatures, dragons, sea monsters, giants, witches,

The Destruction Of Fear In Gardner's Grendel, By John Gardner
Society's biggest flaws stem from the inability to understand the unknown; fear is one of the greatest
contributions to this inability. Society projects their own fears and flaws onto monsters in order to
deter the realization that they are the real monster. In John Gardner's "Grendel"; Grendel is the
victim to this concept because society has a preconceived notion about him and automatically
stigmatizes him. Grendel is an embodiment of mankind's greatest fears and a reflection of them
selves. Our obsession with monsters is due to the lack of understanding from something that is
completely different from ourselves. Society only projects their fears onto monsters because it has
been integrated in society to see monsters as malicious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being afraid is not a valid reason to attack something. It only counter acts the idea what we are
understanding creatures. Even with multiple encounters with Grendel the Danes they do not attempt
any sort of communication with him. They simply attack first and don't bother to question why he
always seems to appear around them. For example Gardner say's "Drunken men rushed with me
with battle–axes. I sank to my knees, crying, "Friend! Friend!" They hacked at me, yipping like
dogs." (Page 52). It is very said that even when Grendel is trying to establish some sort of
communications with the Danes they still ignore him and attack anyway. Even with a lack of
communication the Danes should still try to make contact with him anyway possible. It seems
barbaric that as a society they did not question their own actions. This is one of Societies biggest
flaws. If they would have tried to establish communication with Grendel he may have not reacted
the way he did. Society must use their sociological imagination and try to see that Grendel was only
attacking because he was the one being threatened. He showed the most humanity in that situation,
he tried to establish communication by even saying the word "Friend!". In "Language and Gender in
Grendel" Diane Andrews Henningfeld argues that "Although Grendel understands his language to
be the same as the men's, they do not understand his speech.

character of Grendles mother extremely thought provoking and I found myself drawn to look into
the character in more detail.
When Grendel returns to his lair surpassingly injured this sparks the motivation of revenge within
his mother .As a character she is perceived as a monster yet in the eyes of a twenty first century
reader she is merely a woman who is grieving her sons death and retaliating towards those who
murdered him . Revenge does not have to be associated with malice and evil , as she was a woman
she was labelled 'monster' due to her rash decisions and thirst for vengeance. In the time of the
text, women were supposed to be gentle peace keepers any woman who acted out of the ordinary had
to deal with major consequences ,exile or assassination. Her revenge was not out of spite ,it was
purely fuelled by a mothers fury

Essay About Grendel
Yun Lun
Grendel's mom
I moved to this lake for hundreds of years before anyone came. There is animals all around me to
provide me food, and there is a lake that can protect me. After a long time, monsters started to move
here, food got less and less. One day, while I was going to hunt a deer drinking in my lake, then
something came from the trees, so fast that I can't see clearly, then the deer fell down. All I see is a
stick with feathers on it, didn't know where it came from, so I stay hidden in the water. monsters
started to come out from the forest to take that deer away, they tied it up and carried it back to their
houses, I followed them, the deer is mine and I am going to take it back. They started to use
something so sharp so it cut through the skin so easily, even my claws couldn't cut it so easily. I
went to take the deer and the thing they used, unfortunately, those ... Show more content on

Grendel grew fast, his claws are sharp and his skin is hard, soon he will be able to hunt for me. As
Grendel grew, more and more people came to my lake to live, we hunt together and live together.
Grendel is the strongest and fastest of them all, he brought food for us all everyday. But monsters
also went to live live in the village and the place got bigger and bigger. At first, we are fine with
them coming over, but soon, loud noise came over every night, so loud that we couldn't sleep, so all
of us decided that we need to stop them, sent the best warrior we have, which is Grendel, to go over
there and kill those monsters, the first day he went, I was so worried about him, maybe those
monsters will eat him, but he came back with thirty of those monsters, dead in his hand. I was so
proud of him. We ate those monsters and found that their meat is as good as a deer's and those weird
noise stopped, so we sent him to kill the monsters every day. It was good, he came back every
morning with food, and slept at day, and this continued for twelve

Bigh Hunger: A Short Story
Home is where family resides. Home is where one feels safe, like a baby in a cradle. Home is where
one has a back to rely on, people to trust. For me, home is none of those things. Instead, it is the
dark, empty, consuming void in which I spend my days residing. The only companionship I have is
the computer screen and the dull, dusty, corroded walls which surround my only home. The walls
serve their purpose, as was expected of them: to protect me from the hideous monsters outside. The
ugly, manipulating, disgusting monsters who lure one in with their sweetness and proceed to
strangle one from the inside out. The monsters who do terrible things, things I wish not to speak of
within the confinements of these pages, things that make my blood run cold as if there were a
specter within my midst. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Neat little rows and columns, each with its own treasures, sustain my dwindling health year after
year. There is a small lake beyond the hills where I fetch my own water. The lake itself is
replenished by rainfall weekly, so I need not worry about shortages. However, the most
advantageous characteristic about my farm is its location. The monsters cannot find me here, though
they have tried multiple times in vain. They come into plain sight every year around the time the
trees change colors, and they come wielding long, menacing rifles. They walk a lonely road on the
side of my farm, stretching from east to west as far as the eye could see. The monsters look around
for me, and a fine job they have done of it! They look in the woods, in the clearings, underneath
bushes where the rabbits feed, everywhere except my farm. Sometimes I hear them firing their
rifles, often accompanied by a sound of animals being hit. Oh poor animals! The monsters seem to
not have favorites when it comes to killing. They kill anything for fun, though I believe those like
me are their proudest

Comparison Of Grendel And Frankenstein

  • 1. Comparison Of Grendel And Frankenstein If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Similarly, if a being is never provoked by man, will it become a monster? The latter is a question that is put into focus throughout Gardner's Grendel and Shelley's Frankenstein. The reader learns of Grendel, and of Frankenstein's creation, and must determine if they are truly monsters or merely a product of the world they live in. It is very easy to take one glance at the seemingly heinous crimes committed by Grendel and Frankenstein's creation, and based off of this, deem them to be monsters. However, it is the actions and words of man that transform both Grendel, and Frankenstein's creation into monsters. Both Grendel, and Frankenstein's creations go through personal transformations throughout their lives. They both begin life as innocent creatures with no intention to wreak havoc. Victor Frankenstein created his creature and then immediately ran away from it in fear. In reality, the creature just wanted to be loved and "His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks" (Shelley 59). The creature was brought to life, and his first instinct was to emit a loving smile, but he was met with a scream of terror. Similarly, Grendel began his life as a righteous and pure creature. When Grendel was approached by drunken men wielding battle– axes, he "sank to my knees, crying, 'Friend! Friend!'" (Gardner 52). This proves that Grendel's initial instinct was to befriend the men, despite their hostile approach. While the men continued to hack at Grendel he merely "held up a body for protection" (Gardner 52) instead of fighting back. Grendel could have easily overpowered and killed the men if he wanted to but he chose to simply protect himself. Both creatures started off as innocent and pure until man got involved. Grendel could only take so much neglect and abuse before he transformed into the monster that readers recognize him to be. The actions of man were nothing short of monstrous, and they caused Grendel to turn into a monster. The men did not allow Grendel into the Mead Hall and they tried to kill him whenever they saw him. Even when man was not doing something directly to Grendel, their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Chapter Three Of A Monster Chapter Three A Monster in My Side We tore through the night down dark country roads, wind slamming into the pickup. Rain lashed the windshield. I didn't know how Mom could see anything, but she kept her foot on the pedal. Each time there was a flash of lightning, I glanced at Simon sitting in the backseat, and I wondered if I'd gone mad or if he was wearing a robe, cone–shaped hat, and elf shoes. All I could think to say was, "So, um, you and my dad know each other?" Simon's gaze flitted to the rearview mirror, though there were no cars behind us. "Yeah, sure," he said. "We work together." "Oh, so what exactly do you do?" "That doesn't matter right now." "Then why–" "The less you know, the fewer monsters you'll attract," Simon said, like that should be perfectly obvious. "At least that's what it says in the book." "Monsters–wait a minute, what do you mean?" The howling rose up again from somewhere behind the truck, closer than before. Whatever was chasing us was still on our trail. "Aiden," my mom said, "there's too much to explain and not enough time. We have to get you to safety." "Safety from what? Who's after me?" "Oh, nobody much," Simon said. "Just Renwick and a few of his minions." "Simon!" "Sorry, Ms. Greene. Can you drive a little faster, please?" I tried to wrap my mind around what was going on, but I couldn't do it. I knew this wasn't a nightmare. My eyes were open. Mom made a hard right. • 4. The Monster : The Meaning Of The Monster They are under beds, hiding in the dark, and slithering in the sea. The word, "monster", has a specific meaning to it that most associate with a big, frightening figure. However, use of the word monster has changed throughout time do to pagan influences and American slang. It is still associated with a beastly creature, but can be used to describe amazing feats and wonders as the old French word once did. The definition of Monster has stayed consistent due to storytelling, yet evolved from its humble beginnings. Old French used the word, "mostre", to describe a "prodigy or marvel" in the 12th century (OED 1). "Mostre" came directly from the Latin who used "monstrum" as a "divine omen" ("Monster." Dictionary.com). In certain cultures, abnormal animals were a sign of impending doom for their villages and life. These abnormal animals have given way for the storybook monsters where the most common definition is found. The Oxford English Dictionary refers to the noun as: A mythical creature which is part animal and part human, or combines elements of two or more animal forms, and is frequently of great size and ferocious appearance. Later, more generally: any imaginary creature that is large, ugly, and frightening. (def.1) However, American slang has taken the original term and uses it as a way to represent something "remarkably good" (OED 7). The connotation of the word is a complete shift from this idea of a scary monster, but instead a description of success. This idea of an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Should Aliens Be Legal? Aliens have always been a curiosity for us as a species. Tall slender body, glowing bright green, swollen head, deep black eyes; all characteristics of the generic alien. From a young age, we are taught that there might be someone else out there in the universe; we just haven't met them yet. The question of whether or not we believe in aliens is a hard question to answer because we just do not know. There is no substantial amount of evidence to support either claim. However, the thought that another form of life might exist out in the universe is a diverse theory; room for extrapolation. Curiosity has driven us to create all sorts of alien situations and allows us to think deeply about all the different ways aliens could look like, all the different activities aliens could be able to do, and all the different reasons aliens might make contact with us. Curiosity has also driven us to think about exactly how much more advanced these "others" might be. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the technological level of aliens in film and popular culture has developed from primitive beings to full force technological masterminds– mirroring our own technological narrative. When I hear the word "monster," the first image that comes to mind is the cute, illustrated, blue, white spotted monster from the children's book Monsters Don't Eat Broccoli by Barbara Jean Hicks. My mother would read me this book as a child before bedtime. She did this because the monsters drawn in the book ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Physical And Psychological Aspects Of A Monster My understanding of a monster when I began this semester was that a monster is an evil being who can have physical and psychological aspects that add to the evil. The most basic form of monster is physically unattractive and has general physical deformities. These deformities included fanged teeth, large claws, and super strength. Psychologically monsters behave recklessly because they do not abide by the social limitations that everyone else does. Monsters excel in disguising themselves from society and hiding in the shadows. They crave darkness to shelter them from societal duties. This craving is derived from either a mental illness or an innate sense to try out being evil. Monsters to me were those of fairy tales and scary movies such as werewolves and serial killers. The physical and mental attributes of monsters can be seen in the novel Reason to Breathe by Rebecca Donovan. Physical attributes of a monster are the first thing that draws my attention when reading a novel or watching a movie. The classic view of a monster is found in old novels or movies that deal with things such as Frankenstein or Dracula, and even zombies. The most terrifying in my brain though is the monster that hides from everyone because physically the being would not be recognized. Reason to Breathe is a novel that describes Emma, a girl who bears the weight of abuse and deals with it so her cousins can keep their mom, her aunt Carol. In the end, Emma wins her freedom from Carol. Carol is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Forever Oasis Short Story Forever, Oasis Some things in history we do not know, listen closely as I tell you the forgotten tale of what happened 100 years ago. In the oasis of Saris, Aria, Eliss, and Faron lived the best lives they could live until evil came upon their land. "Aria wake up! you're going to be late for sand surfing practice"."Ok i'm coming stop making such a big fuss Eliss". Aria, the otran (one fourth human and three fourths otter), sprinted down the old gravel road and scurried upon her sand seal. They got to practice 10 minutes late, and had to stand there while the coach threatened to kick them off the team. Besides the yelling, they both had a nice practice. After practice they walked Aria back to the shop. "Bye, and don't get yourself killed exploring. Oh and meet me at the secret waterfall" Aria stated. "Don't poke yourself with a needle Aria". "I'll be more careful this time". Meanwhile, a monster snuck into the town and started to set shops on fire, including hers. She noticed the fire, but not in time. Her shop was now covered with flames. She stood there as her shop transformed to ashes. She needed to run or else she would be a pile of ashes herself. Running is exactly what she did. She ran to her fox friend Eliss who was at the waterfall as waiting for her. From what it looked like he was praying. Aria tapped him on the shoulder and screamed "WE NEED TO GET FRIKKIN OUTA HERE!".They probably would have escaped to Trinn city if it wasn't for the mob of monsters surrounding the town gate. As they ran through the desert looking for safety Aria asked Eliss "why were you praying back there at the waterfall?". Eliss replied with a sigh. Then a tear came running down his face followed by another. Finally he opened his mouth and said "m–my mom got torn from her bones, and eaten alive by one of the sand spiders. You should have heard her scream for mercy". Tears streamed down his red, furry, foxish face. After they stopped for a sip of water (from the water bottle Eliss found on the gravel road) they decided to camp out for the night under a large rock ahead. They awoke to a pig looking monster right above head. He was getting ready to devour us in a single bite. Eliss and Aria popped up and ran as fast as their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Of Prejudice In Frankenstein And Mary Shelley's Lusus... "It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being," John Joseph Powell. From Margaret Atwood's Lusus Naturae, to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and Dan Barry's The Lost Children of Tuam, each story more tragic than the last, all share a common thread of prejudice. Be it societal, ethical, or religious, prejudices are the driving force behind the creation of what many regard as "monsters". This constant label of shame isolates its victims and inflicts self–perception of inferiority, which in turn compels a hardening of one's disposition towards society. Because of her rare affliction, the main character of Margaret Atwood's Lusus Naturae experiences a complete disconnect from not only her family, but also the world around her. The disdain directed towards her was palpable. She notes that her cat "was the only living creature who wanted to be close to me," and even then she questions whether her cat was drawn to her or the smell of "old dried–up blood" (Atwood 3) that was a result of her uncommon diet. Furthermore, she goes so far as to characterize her own mother's relationship to her "as if to a hangnail, a wart" (Atwood 3). Her own self worth is obliterated by the prevailing sense of shame that she believes she has brought to her family. However, under these conditions she resolves to "harden [herself] to loneliness," (Atwood 4) and detaches from society altogether, making her home in the woods like an apparition among the trees. Her place as an outcast to society affords her new insight to the rationale of the common folk. Consequently, after her quarrel with the man in the woods she reflected, "When demons are required someone will always be found to supply the part, and whether you step forward or are pushed is all the same in the end" (Atwood 5). This observation illustrates the impact that societal prejudices have had on her way of thinking, and emphasizes how she grew to fit the role that had been prescribed to her. In other words, people find comfort in the belief that monsters are the stuff of legends when in reality they are bred out of one's own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Analysis Of The Book ' St. Lucy 's Home For Girls Raised... Kanye West said it best, "Everybody knows I'm a M*f**ing monster" and honestly, as humans we are. In Seven Monster Theses, Jeffery Cohen develops an idea that "monsters" are essential to society. In fact, they construct what is "normal", "rational", and "civilized". Specifically, "monsters" are foundational to how we view ourselves. "Monsters" contain all the traits deemed unacceptable and odd. It can be concluded that every outlier is a "monster". In St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, Karen Russell tells the story of a pack of wolf girls who are transitioning into young ladies. Russell delves into society's need for conformity, gender roles, and change. The story is told from the point of view of the middle wolf girl, Claudette, and follows her on her journey from wolf to woman. In relation to Jeffery Cohen's idea of monster culture, Claudette's journey applies to Thesis IV "The Monster Dwells at the Gates of Difference" and part of Thesis I "The Monster's Body is a Cultural Body". Claudette is torn between two worlds and she has to learn how to successfully "move between the two cultures". Through Cohen's theses, Karen Russell uses character development and dialogue to depict the inner and outer battle of societal femininity and individualized femininity and the consequence of accepting either side. The presence of "monsters" are essential for this acceptance. To build "the gate of difference", Russell makes Claudette resistant to the culture change. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Monter Inc. Movie Essay Reverse Monsterfication Throughout the length of the movie, I was taken back to my childhood when there were monsters in my own closet. Over the years, the monsters have all died and been replaced by just as scary skeletons, so my closet is still full. However, to a young child monsters are still lurking in the shadows, and they still make the floor creak. The approach taken by the writers of this film is one of uniqueness and of originality. By successfully juxtaposing the situation between monster and child, the writers were able to confront a touchy subject head on. This was reached through a combination of differences represented by the monsters in the movie and between the child's impression of monsters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Behind all of the flashy animation and the famous voice–overs there are an infinite amount of messages and information forming ideas for the young child to grasp on to. It is the strong story told in the movie which makes it work for children to understand. This story line could be told by Joseph Bruchac while beating on a drum, and it could give the child the very same lessons and ideas as did the movie. That is not to say that the animation and other effects added by the producers does the story harm, just that the story is strong enough to carry the movie on its own. There are certainly some lessons to be learned in the movie as well. Perhaps the strongest lesson taught in the movie is that you should never judge a book by its cover. What may be perceived as undesirable or unpleasant, may actually turn out to be lovely and desirable. The other lesson, which is obviously trying to be taught, is to not be scared of monsters. Whether or not the movie achieves this goal I do not know. In the human world scenes, the monsters were always very fierce and scary, and in the monster world, children appear to be very unwanted and even hunted. Perhaps the best teacher of this lesson is the large bear named Sullivan. He is the one who shows the child audience that all though he is a monster, he is full of love and peace and concern for the safety of the young girl. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Analysis Of Victor Frankenstein The Real Monster Who's the Real Monster? The story of Frankenstein was written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley in the year 1818. The story depicts the life of the character Victor Frankenstein, who spends years creating an unnamed creature. Victor abandons the creature the moment he awakens and the creature is then left to live life on his own because is rejected by humanity. The creature kills several people and eventually leads to Victor's indirect death. Throughout the story, the creature is depicted as a hideous, monstrous and evil creature, while Victor is depicted as the victim of his wrath. At first glance, the creature seems like the bigger monster of the story, but as we begin to view it from a deeper perspective we discover a different side. In this essay, I plan to argue that contrary to popular belief, Victor Frankenstein is the real monster of the story. The Oxford Dictionary defines the word monster as an "An inhumanly cruel or wicked person." There were many cruel and wicked things that Victor did to the creature. Firstly, Victor decided to give the creature a hideous body. Why would he not create his specimen to be beautiful and well formed in every way? It was cruelty on the behalf of Victor to hideously deform his creation. He made his creature to be a hideously deformed monster which every human being shunned. Throughout the story Victor also considers himself to have a God Complex. Victor would be considered to have a God Complex because he firmly believed that he has the ... • 19. Compare And Contrast Victor And Frankenstein The contrast and comparison between, Victor and the monster affects the plot, the theme and the character motivation is also affected. The two characters of the book Frankenstein are Victor and the later introduced monster. These two character come from a very different plot each but this small change in the plot affects the story in a big way. Their specific theme of the book also matters in the story in a way that impacts the reader's emotion itself. Lastly the character motivations play a key role in making the characters' do certain things that they may not fully want to have done. The plots of each character determines how the story can go. Victor is seen as a motivated, intelligent man that pursues his passion with all his might. This seeking of passion is what led Victor into doing what he had to do. The quote on chapter 5 that was said by victor was "I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart." the key word is had. Victor is saying that he had desired it, meaning that what was his passion before does not fulfill him anymore. He also talks about how his dream had vanished. The word vanished is a metaphor to add more excitement into the reader. Its talking about how his dream no longer exists within him. It is ironic that Victor had realized his mistake too late. He had accomplished his goal, but only after that did he truly understand what he had done. The characters' actions affected the plot of the story of a very high aspect. If not for Victos undying ambition this would not have happened. This points out the significance of the plot and how it shaped the characters' actions to a point of no return. The monster on the other hand, in chapter 15 had said "Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed?" yet another use of metaphor was used in this quote. The word spark symbolizes life. This shows that comparison between the speech pattern between the two characters. They have been put in a similar plot that makes them feel certain emotions that make them do specific things. ... Discuss in both literal and figurative terms whether the Creation is a monster. The word "monster" means a being of unnatural size with unnatural features that is sometimes imaginary and often causes fear due to wickedness, ugliness, and cruelty. In literal terms, the Creation is a monster. Based on the definition, he is of unnatural size and features as the Creation is characterized by "its gigantic stature, and the deformity of its aspect" (50). Further, people fear the Creation due to his deformity as stated "the unnatural hideousness of [his] person was the chief object of horror with those who had formerly beheld [him])" (94). In further explanation, the Creation can also be considered monstrous because he was responsible for the death of many people such as William, Justine, and Henry. In figurative terms, however, the Creation is not entirely a monster. Though he did intend to cause harm as he declares war against humans (97), much of his spite a cruelty spurs from his lack of maturity and the environments he was faced with. The Creation came into the world and was immediately faced with rejection. His own creator "turned from him in disgust" (93) and the villagers he grew to love "struck [him] violently with a stick" (97). • 24. Analysis Of Mandeville's Travels And Bisclavret Monsters have always fascinated readers because of their mysterious origins and motives. These strange and unknown characteristics lead us to ask questions and really think about how humans justify their actions and consider what is and isn't moral. Monsters also help us come to a conclusion about who we are as people in a functioning society. In the works of Mandeville's Travels and Bisclavret, the authors help us discover who we are to unify us as a community, give us a sense of security, and identifying monstrous qualities amongst people and creatures. In Mandeville's Travels, John Mandeville tells us his stories of the discovery of the many monsters he finds across the world. Through his stories we discover who we are as people through his monsters. His monsters tell us what we are not, and by doing this he tells us who we are, educated, civilized, kind, and caring people. In Mandeville's first encounter with a monster, the Melk are described as incredibly cruel people who take pleasure in murder and making other people suffer, "There are wicked and cruel folk there too. For they have no delight or pleasure in anything except slaughtering people to drink their blood. And the man who can kill the greatest number of men is the most respected and worthiest among them."(Mandeville, 134). • 26. Characteristics Of The Real Monster In Frankenstein Everyone has different views on what they believe a monster is. When we hear the word monster we usually think of a big gross imaginary creature. It's natural for us to think this way because most are taught at a young age that that's what a monster is. No one really tells us that people can also be monsters. You would call someone a monster when they do sick and inhuman things. Who was the real monster in Frankenstein, was it Victor or was it the monster Victor created? Victor Frankenstein is who I believe should be labeled as the monster. Victor has all the characteristics of a monster he is inhumane and doesn't remorse or care about things that a human being should care about. He was a crazy scientist who then decided create this "monster" and let him off on his own into the world. He spent two years infusing life into an inanimate body that is monstrous. When he first infused life into the monster the awful appearance of him scared him and he instantly runs to his room to try and go to sleep. When Victor had woke up the monster was standing over his bed staring at him and that's when he left the monster and showed him rejection. Victor was very selfish and inconsiderate of others when the monster was seeking revenge on him it wasn't just hurting him it was effecting others around him. However, the monster is labeled as a monster because of his appearance. When something doesn't look like everyone else or something we are familiar with then it's a monster. The monster was 7– foot–tall; he had yellow skin scarcely covered with muscle and arteries beneath; his hair was a lustrous black; his teeth where nice and white; his eyes where horrid and watery; his lips where black (M. Shelley 35). Everyone judges the monster before they actually get to know just because of his looks and he can't help how he looks. His creator made him look the way that he does which is why he gets labeled as a monster. The monster doesn't just do bad thing when he was in the woods watching the cottagers have to go and get wood every morning, he saw that they didn't like doing so he would go get the wood for them and leave it on the porch so that they could get other things done. I had fallen asleep writing in my journal. Yeah, i 'm 20 and still write in a journal, well. It was more like a song book, not some diary little 12 year olds write in about their crushes at school. I glanced at my phone laying on the ground that read 7:08. Well I guess I should get my ass up and get ready for this dreadful day at work. I really didn 't enjoy being a cashier at a Gas Station. But hey it pays the bills so I don 't really care. After I had thrown on my work clothes I did my hair and grabbed my wallet. I 'm not the girl that brings around a purse and wears make up. He was jittery and excited about these books and the fish woman had just smiled and patted on his shoulder. She said something to him but I couldn 't tell what she had said. With the bag of books in my hand I headed back out into the cold. I parked kinda far since I don 't like parking on the curb like other people. I threw up my hood and shoved my hands in my pockets and rushed to my car. I was stopped when I saw these three men surrounding this short yellow monster in a white coat. She was against the wall with a look of terror on her face. One of the men was directly in her face yelling at her. I glanced at the man to the left of him and he had a knife in his hand. I dropped my bag and ran over to the bunch. I had grabbed the man in the monsters face by the back of his hood and puled him backwards to where he fell onto the ground. I quickly dashed over to the terrified monster and stood in front of her, cupping my arms around her but still facing the men. "You fuckers better get the hell out of here and leave this monster alone" I screamed. The man with the knife dashed at me and tried to grab me. I dodged pulling the monster with me. • 30. Moreau Human Nature There are monsters on this island and they look just like you, they will try to make you think the animals are the monsters, but they're lying to you. The fact is, the humans on the island are the actual monsters, they just represent different aspects of human nature. The ugly side of humanity that most try to ignore is all too prevalent in the form of the beast men who are the result of this depravity. The true monster of the island is human nature, which is revealed through three different representations: Moreau, Prendick, and Montgomery. Moreau believes that the end justifies the means, no matter how deplorable the means end up becoming. He is the monster that represents the dark side of humanity, lacking traditional morals, and human ego. He will continue on his immoral path for as long as it interests him. He even affirms "To this day I have never troubled about the ethics of the matter" (56). This is only one aspect of Moreau's depravity. It is revealed that Moreau is the person who hypnotized the Law into the beast people. His ego shines through in this revelation, since part of the Law is, "'His is the House of Pain. His is the Hand that makes. His is the Hand that wounds. His is the Hand that heals'" (43). Avenue Q Term Paper Nia Sherard Yohancey Kingston Professor Adler AR–128–03 April 2010 The both of us, Nia and Yohancey went to go see Avenue Q; we were pleased with our choice on that show after you, professor Adler had spoken about it so much. We decided to go to the play on Wednesday, April 21st. It was the day of the Jesuit Court carnival so as soon as it ended at 5 we went to get showered dressed and catch the shuttle. We were on the way to the city by 5:30 so that we could figure out how to get our tickets for the show and at a cheap rate. This was one of our favorite songs of the show because it we related it to ourselves and our lives. Kate Monster then gets a call from the teacher she teaches with and the teacher told Kate she will have to teach class along because she has to get heart replacement surgery. She then realizes that she wants to teach the kids how to use the internet. As she is singing about teaching the kids how to use the internet Trekkie monster (played by Cullen R. Titmas) keeps cutting in and interrupting her saying that the internet is used just for porn. The song was called "The Internet Is For Porn" and by the time we left the theatre we both kept singing it all the way home, it was one of the catchiest tunes in the show and it could be seen as both a buffo and an exposition for Trekkie Monster because you learn of his love for porn. Yohancey still keeps singing the words because he said he can relate to it because that's how some of his friends think. In fandom, moods and feelings become organized and particular objects or personas take on significance. By participating in fandom, fans construct coherent or cultural activity of their own making which is, potentially, a source of empowerment in struggles against oppressive ideologies and the unsatisfactory circumstances of everyday life." • 33. Monsters Created by Uncontrolled Emotions: Examples of the... Monsters are often part of the imagination; they are beasts that physically look hideous. Greek mythology is full of monsters that the hero like Theseus or Hercules has to kill in order to achieve his glorious fate. However, there are other types of monsters, not based on their physical attributes, but because of the acts that they commit. Jean Racine in his play Phedre shows these psychological monsters who, based on appearance, look like any other character in the story, but it is their actions and thoughts that make them monstrous. The mythological set of the play, which takes place in ancient Greece, highlights the difference between a physical monster, like the Minotaur, and the monstrosity that is within some of the characters like Phedre, Oenone or Theseus and is much worse than any kind of beast. After all, it is easy to fight the hideousness when one can see it, but when it is invisible; it lurks in the shadows and only in the end, when it has fulfilled its monstrous desire, becomes visible to others. However, as the play shows, when the invisible monster becomes visible, it is too late to fight it, leaving behind a tragedy that not only wrenches the heart but is a warning against the immorality and rashness exemplified by the monstrous characters of Thesee, Oenone and Phedre. Phedre, as the title of the play suggests, is the main character of the story. She is the wife of Theseus and the stepmother of Hippolyte. At the opening of the play, Phedre is dying not ... • 35. Real Life Couple's Trouble in The Stockton Civic Theatre’s... The Stockton Civic Theatre's production of Avenue Q last Thursday night depicts an accurate portrayal of life after graduating from college. The protagonist is a fresh out–of–college puppet named Princeton who is trying to seek a job and housing in the "outer borough of New York City." After finding a cheap and unoccupied room in an apartment located on Avenue Q, Princeton befriends his neighbors who are made up of both people and puppets. Princeton meets and falls in love with an elementary teacher, Kate Monster. Together they face the same real–life problems couples deal with in present times. Throughout the whole performance, Princeton is constantly troubled about finding his purpose in life. Princeton, who is played by Jacob Bronson has the ability to connect with the audience despite being visible holding the puppet on stage. Bronson is not only a good actor, but also excels in his singing. He has a very loud and distinctive voice which is proven in the beginning of the play, "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?" Kate Monster, who is played by Randi Linee also has the ability to connect with the audience even though she is clearly visible holding the puppet. She gives Kate a very vibrant and expressive character and uses hand movements to help show Kate's emotions. Kate's hand gestures are not a big distraction unlike the other actors holding puppets. • 39. The Destruction Of Fear In Gardner's Grendel, By John Gardner Society's biggest flaws stem from the inability to understand the unknown; fear is one of the greatest contributions to this inability. Society projects their own fears and flaws onto monsters in order to deter the realization that they are the real monster. In John Gardner's "Grendel"; Grendel is the victim to this concept because society has a preconceived notion about him and automatically stigmatizes him. Being afraid is not a valid reason to attack something. It only counter acts the idea what we are understanding creatures. Even with multiple encounters with Grendel the Danes they do not attempt any sort of communication with him. They simply attack first and don't bother to question why he always seems to appear around them. For example Gardner say's "Drunken men rushed with me with battle–axes. I sank to my knees, crying, "Friend! Friend!" They hacked at me, yipping like dogs." (Page 52). It is very said that even when Grendel is trying to establish some sort of communications with the Danes they still ignore him and attack anyway. Even with a lack of communication the Danes should still try to make contact with him anyway possible. It seems barbaric that as a society they did not question their own actions. This is one of Societies biggest flaws. If they would have tried to establish communication with Grendel he may have not reacted the way he did. Society must use their sociological imagination and try to see that Grendel was only attacking because he was the one being threatened. He showed the most humanity in that situation, he tried to establish communication by even saying the word "Friend!".
