Essay on An Exploration of Vegetarianism
I.Thesis & Definition
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the trend of vegetarianism and its steady increase in popularity in the United States, the possible causes
behind the existence of this trend, its effects on our general society and the practicing population, and finally, the future ofvegetarianism. For the
purpose of this paper vegetarianism is described as a plant–based diet (fruits, vegetables, etc), though the most important factor being the total exclusion
of meat, not including fish for most practitioners. While numerous sub–levels of this lifestyle exist, including veganism (abstaining from the use of all
animal products) and semi–vegetarianism (a person cutting back on meat intake), this study will focus mainly on ... Show more content on

In 1992, as the medical evidence supporting this lifestyle skyrocketed, the American Dietetic Association officially endorsed vegetarianism, thus
solidifying a prominent argument for the credibility of the vegetarian diet. From the 1990s to present day, the amount of practitioners has markedly
increased, and appears to be continually growing at a steady rate. According to a 2008 study conducted by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau on
behalf of Vegetarian Times magazine, roughly 3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian
–based diet. In addition, 22.8
million Americans maintain to follow a vegetarian inclined diet, while 11.9 million are "definitely interested" in becoming a vegetarian in the future
("Vegetarianism"). While no concrete evidence of a current rise yet exists, researchers speculate that, because of new environmental and health
concerns, more people are, and will be, turning to vegetarianism to assist these issues (Rohrer).
III.Causes of Vegetarianism
Environment
Environmental vegetarianism centers on the ever–increasing alarm that mass production of meat and animal products, particularly through factory
farming, is environmentally unsustainable. As reported by a 2006 United Nations initiative, the livestock industry is "...one of the largest contributors
to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food

Vegetarianism : The Health Side Of Vegetarianism
Vegetarianism Albert Einstein once wrote "Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the
evolution to a vegetarian diet." The consumption of meat is commonly considered to be a natural aspect of human behavior, however in our modern
era, more and more people turn away from meat based diets. This dietary shift proposes the question "which diet and lifestyle is healthier?"
Personally, I live off of a predominantly vegan but strictly vegetarian diet (I do consume some animal byproducts, however I generally avoid these
when possible). Because of this, I have a high level of interest in whether or not my dietary choices are healthiest for my body. I know that there are
definitely some benefits to avoiding the consumption of meat, but I always wonder which diet is officially healthier and what are the benefits and
drawbacks of each. I'm well aware of both sides of the argument, and although morally vegetarians make a much more compelling point, are their
decisions actually the healthiest? My goals for this paper is to expand my understanding on the health side of these polar diets. Although I have my
personal opinions on which diet is superior I want to see the facts. The majority of my research will revolve around the connection of these two diets to
increased or decreased likelihood for diseases, the differences in vitamins and proteins attainable through each, the effects on quality and length of

The quote "A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for
the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral" from Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy, encompasses what vegetarianism is about. Veganism and
vegetarianism is generally associated with leafy green salads but there is a long list of health benefits attached to that way of eating and a reduction in
livestock farming benefits our environment. Diving into the benefits of becoming a vegetarian or vegan, there has been extensive research done on
how a teak in diet can reduce risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Plant–based dieting is a lifestyle that is beneficial for health, moral and
environmental reasons.
Numerous studies have shown meat–free diets have a plethora of health benefits such as helping reduce risk of heart disease and cancer and
controlling diabetes. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of deaths in the United States, one which could be prevented with a low cholesterol diet
such as vegetarianism or veganism. The website for American Heart Association says that in order to reduce risk of heart disease people should,

About 75 million are vegetarian of choice and an approximate that there is more than a half a billion of them. The figure that will slowly multiply with
growing wealth and culture (Leahy et al 2). A vegetarian nourishment may play an advantageous role in health and avoiding obesity. Vegetarianism
encompasses a spectrum of eating patterns: from people who wish to be known as 'vegetarians ' regardless including some animal meat in their meals,
but meats products should be omitted such as fish and fowl from a vegetarian dish (Lea and Worsley 505). Even though some people may be in

When comparing animals to a human being, we think they do not have a soul: if they are able to sense of their own mortality and grieve the loss of
companions. Animals have language, melodious abilities, a sense of the mysterious, originality and liveliness. Animals possess a sense of right and
wrong; they are capable of fidelity, altruism, and even self–sacrifice, are not this attributes of having a soul. In some religions, such as Jains, the people
cover their mouths to prevent injuring insects by breathing them in; in addition, they fashion a broom of soft quills and mildly clear the paths in
front of them as they make their way over it. Their worships and values for all kind of lives even smear to root vegetables. They too are whose lives
are as important as humans (Holloway 25). In Jainism, souls who lived harmfully came back for the next life in a lower form, maybe a snake or a
frog and souls did their period on the wheel of rebirth, just as too much nourishment made their bodies sustainable and hard to drag around. So Jains
supposed evil conduct adds burden to the soul and made it resistant to get off the wheel of rebirth as a punishment (Holloway 25). This religion

"7.3 million people in the U.S alone, are vegetarians." Those people, of course, are missing out on many amazing things such as: sausage, hamburgers,
pork and something no one can ever forget, bacon. Although, those 7.3 million people are missing out of those tasty items, they may not exactly be
doing themselves or the environment a favor. Vegetarianismbegan because people did not want to kill or harm animals in any possible way. Some
thought it was inhumane how the animals where kept, treated and killed for their meat. Society also thought it to be a healthier way of living, and of
course for the most obvious reason, it became a new trend and everyone became a vegetarian because their friends and family where. Some religious
cultures also do not eat meat because it is against their religion, such as; Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Jains and many other religious groups. As I said
earlier, people became vegetarians because they thought it was healthier, that may indeed not be completely true. Vegetarianism should not be practiced
in America because it lowers nutrients, is more expensive, and harmful to the environment.
Previously I stated that being a vegetarian is not necessarily healthier. For those of you who do not know what a vegetarian is, it is someone who does
not eat meat, fish, and some of the time no animal products. Completely cutting out meat will lower your protein and can lower your iron. There are

Is Vegetarianism A Healthier Lifestyle?
Healthy lifestyles have come to dominate the minds of many people in a contemporary society, a fact that has brought to life many exciting trends in
all aspects of social functioning. As food is directly related to our health, it is no wonder that people have began to pay increased attention to the food
they eat. In particular, this interest has sparked renewal of vegetarian and vegan lifestyles, which is the best way to attain a healthy lifestyle through
abandoning animal foods.
Vegetarianismhas important philosophical grounds related to murdering animals and the fact that all life on earth should be respected and protected ("
Nutrition Ecology" par 1). Unlike extreme ideas about animal rights that go as far as forbid people to ride mules for their benefit, advocates of
vegetarianism proceed from one simple principle – that killing is wrong and animals have the same right to live. In theory, such a position means that a
person is striving to live in harmony with the outer world, a feature that in itself can promote healthier lifestyle. However, there more matter–of–fact
arguments in favor of vegetarianism, and these arguments hinge on the nutritional benefits of a veggie diet.

or its environmental implications. The animal was not raised for meat, it was not killed for meat; it is just simply and accidently meat–manna from
minivans. Giving the example of insurance company statistics on roadkill deer, the writer said that we can produce 20 billon pounds of free range
venison even if we salvaged only a third of meat. Roadkill arrived with the age of the automobile. The legal ramifications of eating roadkill are a bit
dicey in different states. Tennessee, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Alaska don't take roadkill as big issue; they think that all roadkills belongs

The Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism
A vegetarian diet does not consist of meat, poultry, or fish instead fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. Depending on the person, a
vegetarian diet may consist of eggs and dairy products. There are also different classifications of vegetarians. For example, lactovegetarians will
consume dairy, and lacto–ovovegetarians will consume both dairy and eggs. Lastly, semivegetarians will consume fish but nomeat or poultry. It is not
known when vegetarianism started, but oldest record dates to the 6th century BC in Europe. A group of religious followers of the Orphic mysteries
banned sacrificing animals and the consumption of any animal product. In Greece, Pythagoras was developing ideas that linked meat consumption and
reincarnation, and this ultimately caused some to avoid consuming meat. This lead to a phenomenon called that Pythagorean way of life which was
practiced by other philosophers and writers until the 19th century. The reasons for switching to a vegetarian diet was similar to some mentioned today.
The ancient Greeks believed that like humans, animals could communicate and think, and humans were responsible to care for the animals. In addition,
the Greeks believed that consuming meat was impacted the mind and health. This lead them to think that a plant–based diet cleansed the soul and
aligned them closer to god. There are no data recorded about vegetarianism after the 6th century BC. The next known period dates to 1847 when the first

Veganism and Vegetarianism
Veganism and vegetarianism are widespread trends that have been gaining attention rapidly all around the world. For some people, they are only a diet.
On the other hand, for others, they are a lifestyle. Veganism and Vegetarianism are both diverse diets that can affect the human body and environment
in different ways. Veganismis a lifestyle that excludes any use of animal products, such as meats, dairy, leather, etc. The main purpose of veganism is
to not support animal exploitation, thus not support animal cruelty. However, many people can also turn to veganism as a diet. Veganism proves to be

These causes are discussed in detail as follows; Agriculture; One of the biggest drivers of deforestation is agriculture.
Few vegans believe that everyone should become vegan to help cure the world in ways where we do not have to promote acts such as deforestation,
and do not have to continue killing animals for our own desires. However, the majority of vegans are satisfied with their own actions, knowing that
they can make a difference on their own. On the contrary, vegetarianism is a not as strict of a diet as veganism, much less a lifestyle. Many vegetarians
choose this lifestyle because they are attempting to fix their health, want to take part in saving animals, or simply do not like the taste of meat. In a way,
vegetarianism is a healthier diet than veganism, even though vegetarians wouldn't be losing pounds quite as fast. Vegetarians are least likely to become
nutrient deficient, which is a problem with veganism. Because veganism is so strict, it is hard to chose the right substitutes to eat in order to get all the
nutrients you need. On the other hand, vegetarians are

Society of Great Britain. But the practice of vegetarianism has been around for as long as humans have had diets. A majority of the world's oldest
cultures advocate a vegetarian diet for their health and religious beliefs. More Americans should consider being a vegetarian because of spiritual

Benefits Of Being Vegetarianism
Why should humans be vegetarian?
More and more, some good quality meat is becoming very expensive. Since a can of chickpeas is less expensive and easier to cook, a lot of Quebec
College students decide to take the meat out of their diet. Everyone should do like those people and be vegetarian for the benefits that it as for society
and the environment. This diet is good for the human health, it helps save the planet and it helps save the animals.
First, there are many health benefits that comes with being vegetarian. In the Harvard Health Publishing, the searchers describe the way that
vegetarianism can help your body. " Compared with meat eaters, vegetarians tend to consume less saturated fat and cholesterol and more vitamins
C and E, dietary fiber, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, and phytochemicals (plant chemicals), such as carotenoids and flavonoids. As a result,
they're likely to have lower total and LDL (bad) cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and lower body mass index (BMI), all of which are associated with
longevity and a reduced risk for many chronic diseases. " The major diseases that vegetarianism can prevent are heart disease, cancer and type 2
diabetes. In fact, vegetarians are 25% less likely to die from a heart disease than meat eaters. This means that a lot of people could be saved with this
diet. Personally, if I could do anything to live longer and healthier, I would do it. Nowadays, we eat a lot of junk food, and more and more people are

Vegetarianism Is Bad For The Environment
The final argument comes from Peter Dockrill, who claims that vegetarianism is bad for the environment. He begins with talking about a Carnegie
Mellon Study, which states that the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) , current recommended number of daily servings, if followed
to the letter, would actually be bad (Dockrill 2015). However, this does not necessarily have anything to do with a vegetarian diet. Dockrill (2015)
discusses how lettuce and other plants emit more greenhouse gas emissions than some meat products. He proposes three scenarios that could occur.
The first, is that if people ate less of what they already do it would decrease the environmental impact (Dockrill 2015). Dockrill's (2015) second
scenario would involve

Arguments Against Vegetarianism
Albert Einstein once said, "Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a
vegetarian diet." Many enlightened and intelligent people have along with Einstein come to realize that the problems Americans face with health and
the environment can be solved with simply partaking in the more compassionate lifestyle accredited to the vegetarian movement. Americans should
adopt vegetarian diets because they are more beneficial to one's health, more sustainable for the environment, and more ethical than the standard
Western diet. Adopting a vegetarian diet has exceptional health benefits that can't be ignored. For instance, in the article "Why Turn toVegetarianism,"

we say yes to health, we say no to harm. We protect our bodies as well of the bodies of the animals–approximately 20,000 of them per minute in the
U.S. alone–who are brutally raised and slaughtered for their flesh and excretions." Animals are intelligent, loving, and very much deserving of life.
Humans have come to think that they own every animal on the planet and can extort, exploit and execute them at no cost except $5.99 a pound.
However, there is a much greater cost to the meat on America's plate–– millions of animals' lives. Furthermore, in the same article, Melanie Joy states,
"Animals are routinely castrated, de–beaked, and de–horned without any painkiller whatsoever. They are born and raised in crowded, filthy, dark
environments where their existence is one of abject misery and terror." Animals are sentient beings with nervous systems and thought processes. The
pain and suffering animals in commercial farming must endure preceding their murder is harrowing. If factory farms had glass walls, people would
take a moment to think about the consequences their eating habits ensue. It is a simple and apparent conclusion that a vegetarian diet is more humane
and virtuous than the standard Western

Controversy Over Vegetarianism
Vegetarianism is not merely a present–day fashion. Human beings from
diverse cultures have practiced it since olden times. Having a vegetarian diet has been
a topic that creates conflicting opinions, and it seems that the controversy gets bigger
as time moves on. In the times that we are living in today, where we are persistently
bombarded with information through the television and Internet, it makes it hard to know
who is right and who is wrong on this issue. Embracing vegetarianism provides the
optimum benefit as it keeps a person fit as a fiddle, with the added benefits of being
human and not disturbing the law of nature. So many Americans in many instances are

USDA includes meat as part of a balanced diet, but it also states that a
vegetarian diet can meet the recommended dietary allowances for
nutrients. Many proponents of vegetarianism say that eating meat harms
health, wastes resources, causes deforestation, and creates pollution.
They often argue that killing animals for food is cruel and unethical since
non–animal food sources are plentiful. Many opponents of a vegetarian
diet say that meat consumption is healthful and humane, and that
producing vegetables causes many of the same environmental problems
as producing meat. They also argue that humans have been eating and
enjoying meat for 2.3 million years. In Western culture, vegetarianism
dates back to Ancient Greece. The mathematician Pythagoras (570 BC –
495 BC) advocated vegetarianism; a meatless diet was commonly called
the "Pythagorean diet" until the term vegetarian became popular during
the 1800s. The philosopher Plato (428 BC – 348 BC) described a

The Benefits Of Vegetarianism
Vegetarianism is a controversial topic that involves the consumption of meat. Should one become a vegetarian? If consuming meat involves the
production of factory farming and health risks the consuming meat is not good. If consuming meat is not good, one should become a vegetarian.
Therefore one should become a vegetarian. A suitable beginning would be to define a factory farm.
A factory farm is a large, industrial operation. It raises large numbers of animals for food. About nine billion animals live in factory farms to live a
miserable existence. Newborns torn from their mom days after being born. Sometimes even hours. They are then transported and kept in small cages.
Or their is life in cramped and overcrowded pens. Males in egg farms are not valuable. Tens of thousands of them are into the trash because their meat
is unsuitable. They are also ground alive into feed for other animals. Male calves of dairy cows eat liquid and iron deficient diets. They are in crates
for their lives that keep them as immobile as possible. This is to keep their muscles weak and tender. Most of these animals at these farms are
indoors. Few are able to live happy lives. Because of this they are unable to fulfill their instinctual urges. They become psychotic, neurotic and have
repetitive behaviors. Many become cannibalistic. The animals are also give a consistent regimen of antibiotics and growth hormones. To keep disease
and death away. "Factory farming and non–intensive family farms animals could have surgical modifications such as beak, toe, tail removal, ear
tagging and clipping, teeth removal, branding, dehorning, castration and ovary removal" (QUOTE). Due to the high cost of anesthesia this is all
performed without it. During transportation to the slaughterhouse many animals die. Due to starvation or freezing to death. The animals who are
unable to walk are "downers" (QUOTE) and die in the yard. Animals with fur die in the wild. Or they live in small cages and fed each other's
remains. They are then killed by anal electrocution so their pelts are not marred. Factory farming is immoral and has turned many people to
vegetarianism.
Another reason would be this argument. Let's say someone sees a small turtle come out of the

"The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that their treatment has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of

so drawn to the consumption of meat and fed up with only one thought about it. Why so many people loathe of blood, and why so few people can

which was programmed in the human psyche. Realization the necessity of refraining from meat is especially difficult because people consume it for a

An ancient Greek philosopher and scientist Pythagoras was convinced that whoever kills an animal without any remorse can easily kill a man. Other
philosophers were even more straightforward and indicated that cruelty to animals leads to wars. It leads me to believe that the attitude towards animals
is not something we can merely write–off as a showcase of the innate "cruelty of man", but an indicator of our society's ethical level. If more people
become aware of the suffering and death of animals that we, as a people, have caused, and acknowledge it, it would be a small, but significant sign of
moral growth. Although moral principles have gained increasing recognition due to their usefulness for the society, i.e. for pragmatic reasons, the
evolution of ethics had different roots – psychological and spiritual. It is based on the person's ability for empathy: which is the basis of moral
behavior of a person, his kindness, and decency. It can be argued that the ability for empathy separates man from the world of animals. With the
development of spirituality and feelings of compassion, people began to feel uncomfortable by the fact that their actions were constantly associated
with the infliction of suffering to other beings, and even their death. Even in ancient times, high minds have concluded that man,

Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism
Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat eating diet? Becoming vegetarian certainly has pros because of its potential health benefits. However,
becoming vegetarian also has its cons because it can cause the human body to become deficient on some of the body's needs such as iron. With that,
there are many advantages and disadvantages to vegetarianism that could make or break the choice of becoming one.
A vegetarian lifestyle is known to provide the body with many health benefits. According to "Becoming a Vegetarian," "Compared withmeat eaters,

This is not only for the nutritional needs, but to make sure the dieter is not consuming fats in replace of the nutritional diet. In this case, it all comes
down to the proper diet being enforced. Becoming a vegetarian, but consuming fat cakes would not be benefiting vegetarianism. However enforcing
the appropriate diet would indeed benefit the body because as "Should People Become" says, "According to a peer–reviewed 2003 Oxford University
study of 37,875 healthy men and women aged 20–97, 5.4% of meat eaters were obese compared to 3% of vegetarians. Meat eaters had an average
Body Mass Index (BMI) 8.3% higher than vegetarians." With that, it can be seen that vegetarianism in general, causes the dieter's body mass index to
be lower than a meat–eating dieter. This is because of eating healthier food with lower calories and maintaining a strict diet.
On the contrary, following a vegetarian diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Vegetarians consume proteins through legumes and nuts, but these items
often fall short of providing the body with its imperative needs (Stein et. al.). A complete protein source like animal products, give the body amino
acids that are essential. Protein is needed for the body in order to build/repair tissues and have strong bones, muscles and more. Yes, protein can be

The Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism
"Every time we sit at a table to enjoy the fruits and grain and vegetables from our good earth, remember that they come from the work of men and
women and children who have been exploited for generations." These words of Cesar Chavez, co–founder of the United Farm Workers, perfectly
describe the injustice farm workers face in producing our food and including humans when talking about cruelty free. Conversations surrounding
notions of vegetarianism as inherently cruelty free seldom incorporate the advocacy of more rights for farm workers. As a conflicted meat eater, I can
concede that the fight for vegetarianism is honorable and consuming fewer animal products would be beneficial for our society, however, promoting
meat–free meals and products as "cruelty free" mistakenly limits the cruelty of the food production system to animals. Comparatively, our food
production system also exploits factory farm workers, a point also overlooked in conversations regarding ethical eating. Ultimately, the fundamental
problem with vegetarianism is the cruelty free platform, that too often ignores the inhumane working conditions of farm workers. That being so, not
eating meat does not place you above everyone else on the moral scale or mean you practice cruelty free when exploited laborers in our food
production system, most of whom are undocumented, do not have their liberation.
The unfortunate reality is that the majority of things we consume have harmful effects whether you are vegetarian

Vegetarianism And The Effects Of Homocysteine
Vegetarianism and the Effects of Homocysteine. By: Samuel Varjabedian In this day and age, many people are removing meat from their diets to
pursue health benefits. These can include: Reducing Stress, Lowering Cholesterol Intake, Increasing Mineral Intake, Lowering Depression, Reducing
the Risk of Cardiovascular Failure and, Lowering Carcinogenic exposure found in meat. These benefits can come at the price of nutritional deficiencies,
in particular a compound known as cobalamin (Vitamin B–12) has been observed repeatedly low in numerous studies. (Piccolli, 2015) [1] Due to the
complex nature of cobalamin, it is very unlikely simple life like plants would contain adequate amounts required for bodily functions such as:
Digestion, Artery flexibility, and lowering toxicity. These functions are dependent on micro
–nutrients such as Omega–3–Fatty–Acids, B–6
(Pyridoxine), Folate, and B–12. Out of all these, B–12 and Omega–3 are the most difficult to obtain through plant matter alone; supplements are
usually taken by vegetarians for this reason. (Rathold, K., J., 2016) [2] The process of Methylation (Hart, G., Dr.) [4] A process known as methylation
is used to cleanse the body from heavy metal toxicity absorbed through daily life, In this process an amino acid called Methionine is combined with
cobalamin to form methyl–cobalamin, creating a by–product called homocysteine. This by–product is a toxin produced by the body, In a normal human

The Benefits Of Vegetarianism
It is a Saturday evening, and your family is eating out at a restaurant. When you look at the menu, all of the main dishes have some type of meat in

cow. I have been in this situation many times in my life. In the year 1866, vegetarianism was introduced as a lifestyle for people. According to Harvard
Health, "People become vegetarians for many reasons, including health, religious convictions, concerns about animal welfare" (Becoming). Many
religious groups, such as Catholics, would have certain days they could not eat meat. One such example would be Lent. During Lent, catholics give up
meat in order to honor Jesus. This is still a common tradition that occurs today. This During a recent study in 2009, "As many as 8 million American
adults [were] vegetarians" (Traugh 6). Recently, I have become interested in vegetarianism and through reading books and researching the subject
through websites and journal databases, I have developed more knowledge on it. Vegetarianism creates a healthy lifestyle, reduces the risk of heart
disease, and can be a significant benefit towards a person's life.
Vegetarianism is important because it is the best way to develop a healthy lifestyle. One such example is the statement that "plant–based eating is

Vegetarianism Philosophy Essay
Vegetarianism is a custom practiced in six out of the seven continents and has become more popular over the years. Vegetarianism can be defined as
the exclusion of animal products such as meat and fish from one's diet. Dairy products and eggs are often times excluded as well. Although there are
many reasons one may decide to become a Vegetarian or follow such a code of ethics, the most common include: moral, religious or health reasons.
Morally, one may feel obligated to exercise Vegetarianism due to the inhumane treatment of animals throughout the farming process. The issue is that
roughly ten billion animals are raised for United States food consumption alone. Animals such as cows, fish, chickens, pigs, and turkeys are subjected to

However, it is not an argument of which life holds more value. The argument is that it is immoral to subdue animals to inhumane conditions for the
purposes of efficiency and human food consumption.
For some, the choice of Vegetarianism is decided based on religious beliefs or practices. Vegetarianism is compatible with the major world
religions–the Eastern Religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism) and the Abrahamic Religions (Judaism, Islam,Christianity, and BahГЎ'Г Faith).
Among these, it is most commonly practiced by those of the Buddhist, Christian and Islamic faith. Vegetarianism within the Buddhist culture is taught
along with the "Four Noble Truths," which focus on the acts of suffering. Since the Buddhist faith accepts the idea of karma, it is believed that in
order to maintain a life of peace and happiness and remain free of suffering, one must refrain from the harming, injuring or killing of any living being.
As part of the Christian faith, animal cruelty is forbidden. The teachings of Jesus Christ focus on the ideas of love, compassion, mercy and acceptance.
Although the question of eating meat is not directly addressed in Christian doctrine it can be implied that since animals are a creation of God and the
idea of love for all of God's creations is heavily stressed in the Christian faith, then out of Christian love on should lead a life

Eating is a staple of life. In every culture, food customs and variety are part of that cultures definition. In American society and other cultures, meat is a
main food that is consumed, yet not by everyone. Dating back to medieval times, some meats were not consumed due to the "impurities" they were
seen to be by the religions of the time. Throughout history, this has developed from not eating red meat, to not eating any meat at all, and even further
to the vegan extreme of not eating any animal products at all. Though not everyone feels this way, more and more people change their eating habits
every day.

One of the main dietal changes people make is the choice of eating meat.
"Eating, as has been commonly remarked, produces a particularly intimate identification with the consumed product: we are what we eat. It is
therefore not surprising when we look cross culturally at food patterns that meat, and to a lesser extent animal products, are by far the most common
focus of taboo, regulation and avoidance," (pg. 18, Twigg). Though the religious establishments were mostly responsible for stating that meat, mainly
red meat, could not be consumed due to the filthy nature of the animals it was taken from, people still were allowed to eat fish and poultry, except on
certain days of fasting, like Good Friday or Lent. So, vegetarianism started out as a form of religious restraint on the people's diets. However, today's
vegetarian differs from that of the older generations in that it has become an individual choice, relating to the person's feelings about the animals, but
not necessarily being limited to that reason. "In the west& vegetarianism is very much a product of individual choice, and indeed, requiring one, as it
does, to step outside the culturally prescribed forms of eating, depends on the development of a highly individuated sense of the self," (pg. 19, Twigg).

Friday evening. You decided to have a dinner with your friends at the new restaurant. You are promptly seated at the table in a corner and are given

There are adherents of vegetarian food that eat only plants. Some people eat vegetarian food and drink milk, others consume plants, milk and eggs
(Friend 11). Vegetarianism, for many supporters of the principles of nutrition, is not just eating habits. It's a way of life, rejecting violence against
animals.
It is impossible not to recognize the fact that people are the same animals. And it's not just because of Darwin's theory that man evolved from the
apes, but because of recently deciphered human genome, for which the "decryptor" has already received a Nobel Prize. At the same time, he proved
to the world that a human "has the same snippets of genetic code in cells, which exist in the crocodiles, lizards, flies, mammals" (Gold 26). That means
only one thing: human is the same biological animal, but only with the ability to think. We have the same features as a carnivorous animal, canine
teeth, for example, and need to use them purposely. Base on this data, we can conclude that the food of animal origin must be included in our diet.
Now let's take a look at nutrition data. Many people believe that all proteins are equal, regardless of the nature of their origin. The fact that proteins
differ in many ways is well–known by geneticists, biologists and other specialists. The difference between vegetable and animal proteins is significant.

Arguments Against Vegetarianism
To most people vegetarianism means the refraining of meat, primarily red meat, from personal consumption. Although the traditional vegetarian
abstinence of red meat has grown into a group of varied lifestyles, little is known about them. To some people vegetarians are considered to be a drop
out of the hippy era, or are labelled as "weird" or "feral". Because of the misinterpretations surrounding vegetarianism in society
I am going to outline the various diets which are recognized as vegetarianism. I hope by writing this I can change some attitudes and
misunderstandings, of the motivations behind the vegetarian lifestyles.

Well there is actually a growing market for vegan foods in super markets, as the benefits of soya and gluten become more recognized. From soy milk to
vegan sausage rolls to vegan pizza made with vegan cheese, its all there; and it all tastes, smells and looks just like the original, yet these alternatives
are free of cholesterol and any animal products.
The most disciplined vegetarian choice is the whole food vegetarian, which is based on the vegan diet, but which takes it to the extreme of
abstaining from all highly processed foods: i.e. white bread, white sugar, white rice etc. They rely almost solely on nutrients from whole foods; fruit
and vegetables, nuts and seeds, wholemeal and wholegrain foods, soy produce and sometimes gluten based foods, such as vegan burgers. Some
vegans tend to lean towards this diet, but usually still use some foods which include processed flours or sugars. Although for health reasons it is
always good to make use of wholemeal or wholegrain alternatives rather then more processed types of food. Most people don't actually base their
entire diet around it due to the high discipline required.
Of course these are just a handful of recognized vegetarian diets, there are no strict guidelines for being a vegetarian. The discipline involved in the
diet is really up to the person, there are many motivations for vegetarianism, everyone finds their own, and depending on your personal reasons the
extent of your diet will be reflected. Some people may

The Controversy Of Vegetarianism In Australia

and is often a hotly debated topic. The number of vegetarians in Australia is rising steadily each year with approximately 2.1 million or 11.2% of the
Australian population are practising vegetarianism.
One of the biggest arguments for most people that are vegetarian is that eating meat is not necessary for human survival or for their health. Some
vegetarians find that slaughtering animals solely for the purpose of humans to eat meat is wrong and not justifiable. Most vegetarians do not eat meat
due to the practises involved in the production and slaughtering of animals citing concerns about

Negative Essay On Vegetarianism
Environmental issues such as global warming, water pollution, climate change and many more, are influencing every human, animal, and nation. There
are many other ways to reduce the impacts but I will discuss vegetarian or vegan diet. A vegetarian diet is when a diet does not have meat, poultry, or
fish, while a vegan diet further excludes dairy products. By excluding meat, poultry or dairy products from our diets, we can protect our earth planet, as
producing meat causes more greenhouse gases emissions than any other environmental impact. To supply more meat for consuming, companies are
creating more space for farm factories by destroying our forests. Factories mistreat animals to gain more profits by giving them drugs to grow bigger,
faster. To raise animals, they moreover need an immense amount of land, food, energy and water, that is using our precious resources. The more meat
we eat, the more meat is produced, and the more the resources are used in raising animals. We must stop now and make the correct choices. Vegetarian
or vegan diets are healthy as they contain the nutritious including the protein that our bodies need. If everyone becomes a vegetarian or vegan fewer
supply will be used, animals won't be mistreated by companies and we will lead nutritious, healthy lives while living in a healthy environment.
Introduction:
Our earth planet is facing heaps of environmental effects such as global warming, acid rain, air pollution, urban sprawl, waste disposal, ozone layer
depletion, water pollution, climate change and much more, due to our careless actions and behaviours towards our environment. (Fehu Finds

negligence, we have seen natural disaster in the form of floods, tsunamis and cyclones. If we make the right choices and take corrective actions, we
can protect and secure the future of our next generations. While, so many countless other ways to protect our earth, but I will discuss if everyone

The Ethical Implications Of Vegetarianism
Vegetarians are people who do not eat meat, and for some, do not consume any animal products at all. Vegetarian has been along for a long time and
with time has grown the controversy over the topic. The reasons that vegetarianism has grown into a controversial topic are mostly the human beliefs
and health reasons associated with it.
Vegetarianismhas been around since as early as the seventh century B.C.E.. The civilization was the Indus Valley Civilization, they practiced tolerance
towards all living things. Several Indian cultures and various religions (such as a ahimsДЃ) also practice non–violence towards animals
("Vegetarianism", Wikipedia.com). This used to be the sole purpose for being vegetarian, but nowadays people are becoming vegetarian for several
more reasons. The ethical aspect is still a big reason in the decision. Health benefits and environmental aspects have now also become big reasons for
the controversy over vegetarianism. People say that killing animals for food is not morally wrong and, is in fact, a crucial part of our lives. Another
aspect is that, while in some ways vegetarianism is beneficial to the environment, it can also hurts the environment. Also, despite all of the health
benefits involved with vegetarianism, there are also several health concerns connected with it. There are many aspects that make the topic of
vegetarianism a controversial topic. One of these is that some people believe that the killing of animals for food, and the way these

Difference Between Vegetarianism And Vegetarianism
Vegetarian vs Meat–eater Humans need substance to survive. Every single person has a choice in the type of diet they consume each day. Certain
lifestyles, such as vegetarianism or a meat–based diet, can affect a variety of issues that are common in today's society. Both vegetarians and
meat–eaters make conscious efforts when eating which affects animal agriculture, the environment, their health, and the economy. Studies with
staggering statistics have shown how much of a negative impact producing meat for consumption is having on this planet. "It takes more than 2,400
gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef, while producing 1 pound of tofu only requires 244 gallons of water (PETA)." Factory farms create
manure which produces runoff and is one of the leading causes for the pollution in rivers and lakes. This also poses an issue for the air that people
are breathing. "Studies have shown that [animal waste] lagoons emit toxic airborne chemicals that can cause inflammatory, immune, irritation and
neurochemical problems in humans" (Foer). Another issue is the land that is being wasted. Threats like deforestation become a reality when crops
are being used to feed animals and not humans directly. Only 4 million acres are being used to grow plants that go directly to humans, while 56
million acres are being used to grow feed for animals, and this is in the United States alone (PETA). Vegetarianismis an option that promotes better

well as the harsh realities of the unsanitary procedures reveled in the film. Overall I would say, vegetarianism has made me a healthier person by
making me constantly aware of what I put into my body (a main reason that I believe the issue is worth research), it has cured an esophageal health
problem that I have been having since birth, and best of all in an essence the lifestyle choice lifted a huge weight off my shoulders by giving more

Negatives Of Vegetarianism
Cutting off meat from one's diet comes with many benefits. For example, energy matters: eating meat is "far less energy efficient than relying on a
vegetarian diet (and leaves a far greater ecological footprint)," because in the trophic levels, only 10% of energy moves with each level when an animal
consumes another (Withgott PAGE NUMBER). By the time a human consumesmeat, they only gain about 30% of optimal energy, versus 90%
energy in a vegetarian diet (Withgott). Other benefits include lower cholesterol, lower blood sugar, and lower body mass index than meat eaters
(Sifferlin). Likewise, there is a reduced risk of heart disease and colon, stomach, and prostate cancer (Beezhold, Le). In a cross–sectional study in
Nutrition Journal, Vegetarians have been found to have less negative emotions than omnivores (Beezhold). With a vegetarian diet, there is less negative
impact on physically and mentally. A few "drawbacks" tovegetarianism are a lack of protein, iron, and vitamin B12. Despite popular belief, these can
all be found in plant–based foods. There are amino acids in various greens, nuts, and fruits: sprouts, broccoli, almonds, pecans, bananas, dates, etc.
(Freedman). Not to mention, protein from animals can actually cause health issues for humans such as, osteoporosis and diabetes and cancer
(Freedman). Beans and legumes, an assortment of fresh and dried fruit, almonds, peas, spinach, etc. all have iron (Getting). Then, vitamin B12 can be

Advantage Of Vegetarianism
Is it Worth Being a Vegetarian?
These days, many people around the world are changing their eating habits towards vegetarianism, which implies a diet where the consumption of
animal products is avoided. There are different positive aspects that explain this trend. However, as always there is another side of the coin, the
disadvantages will be greater as our diet becomes more restrictive. The idea of being a vegetarian personally seems to me a very radical decision,
everything must have a balance even the food, because it is a very important factor in our daily life. We must be aware of what we eat, trying to do it
in a healthy way and without the need to abuse the consumption of products of animal origin. Being vegetarian in simple terms is not eating meats.
But it really goes beyond that. That is why this essay shall explore positive and negative aspects from people who decide to change their lifestyle,
when they are going from an omnivorous diet to a vegetarian one. Motivated for reasons such as health, ethical, ecology, and trend.
One of the most important reasons why people decide to change their diet is health, because it determines the amount of essential nutrients for the
proper functioning of our body. It is said that a vegetarian diet provides health benefits, like the risk of suffering from certain diseases is lower. "The
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the British Medical Association, and the World Health Organization (WHO) have all
published studies that conclude that vegetarian diets provide certain health benefits, based on findings that vegetarians tend to weigh less, have lower
cholesterol levels, and even face a reduced risk of some kinds of cancer." (Vegetarianism). The list includes heart disease, diabetes, gallstones, kidney
stones, osteoporosis and diverticulitis. However, to avoid deficiencies in proteins, calcium, iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12, omega–3 and iodine, we must
inform ourselves very well when we are performing a vegetarian diet or be advised us by a nutritionist, to be sure that our food plan satisfies all the
nutrients that our body needs. What is important is doing things well. Eliminating animal products from our diet is nothing new. It is true

Humans are classified as omnivorous, which means they can eat anything, and their diet can include fruit, vegetables, grains, and meat. The history of
vegetarianism goes back to 2,500 years, some ancient civilizations depended on a vegetarian diet because meat was not available (Vegetarianism). In
India vegetarianism remains today as an ethical issue as well as a part of the Hindu religion. Today in the United States, there is a reverent percentage

Comparing Buddhism And Vegetarianism
Buddhist and Vegetarianism
Buddhism, like many religions, has been essential in sorting out the lives of many individuals. One looks to religion on things such as politics, morals,
and values. Among these morals and values, what one eats may be tied to their religion. Vegetarianism is one of the subsectors attached to Buddhism
for better or for worse. Vegetarianismbrings in things such as mercy towards animals, karmic retribution, and purity of oneself. Some believe it is
necessary to become a vegetarian, while many others do not agree with this necessity.

The destruction of the environment around oneself can take a toll on their spirituality and purity. There is immense damage caused by energy
production and wasteful consumerism. One of the largest yet least known contributors to global warming and environmental destruction generally is
eating meat. The basic problem is meat is higher on the food chain when compared to plants. Therefore, more resources are required to produce nutrition
in the form of meat. In the past this was not an issue because animals typically ate things that were not food for humans, like grass. However in today's
world, most food animals live on grains and other resource–intensive products (Sujato, n.d.). This means that meat requires more energy, water, space,
and all other resources than plants. In addition to the burden on the environment, this creates a range of localized problems. Things that stem from the
use of fertilizers, the disposal of vast amounts of animal waste, etc. are all contributors to the destruction of the environment. So, as compared with the
past, eating meat involves far more cruelty. It brings harm to innocent animals, creates disease, and damages the environment. If one were to approach
this question as one of weights and balances, they would quickly see the scales have tipped drastically to the side of not eating

Essay On An Exploration Of Vegetarianism

  • 1. Essay on An Exploration of Vegetarianism I.Thesis & Definition The purpose of this paper is to investigate the trend of vegetarianism and its steady increase in popularity in the United States, the possible causes behind the existence of this trend, its effects on our general society and the practicing population, and finally, the future ofvegetarianism. For the purpose of this paper vegetarianism is described as a plant–based diet (fruits, vegetables, etc), though the most important factor being the total exclusion of meat, not including fish for most practitioners. While numerous sub–levels of this lifestyle exist, including veganism (abstaining from the use of all animal products) and semi–vegetarianism (a person cutting back on meat intake), this study will focus mainly on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1992, as the medical evidence supporting this lifestyle skyrocketed, the American Dietetic Association officially endorsed vegetarianism, thus solidifying a prominent argument for the credibility of the vegetarian diet. From the 1990s to present day, the amount of practitioners has markedly increased, and appears to be continually growing at a steady rate. According to a 2008 study conducted by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau on behalf of Vegetarian Times magazine, roughly 3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian –based diet. In addition, 22.8 million Americans maintain to follow a vegetarian inclined diet, while 11.9 million are "definitely interested" in becoming a vegetarian in the future ("Vegetarianism"). While no concrete evidence of a current rise yet exists, researchers speculate that, because of new environmental and health concerns, more people are, and will be, turning to vegetarianism to assist these issues (Rohrer). III.Causes of Vegetarianism Environment Environmental vegetarianism centers on the ever–increasing alarm that mass production of meat and animal products, particularly through factory farming, is environmentally unsustainable. As reported by a 2006 United Nations initiative, the livestock industry is "...one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food ... • 2. Vegetarianism : The Health Side Of Vegetarianism Vegetarianism Albert Einstein once wrote "Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." The consumption of meat is commonly considered to be a natural aspect of human behavior, however in our modern era, more and more people turn away from meat based diets. This dietary shift proposes the question "which diet and lifestyle is healthier?" Personally, I live off of a predominantly vegan but strictly vegetarian diet (I do consume some animal byproducts, however I generally avoid these when possible). Because of this, I have a high level of interest in whether or not my dietary choices are healthiest for my body. I know that there are definitely some benefits to avoiding the consumption of meat, but I always wonder which diet is officially healthier and what are the benefits and drawbacks of each. I'm well aware of both sides of the argument, and although morally vegetarians make a much more compelling point, are their decisions actually the healthiest? My goals for this paper is to expand my understanding on the health side of these polar diets. Although I have my personal opinions on which diet is superior I want to see the facts. The majority of my research will revolve around the connection of these two diets to increased or decreased likelihood for diseases, the differences in vitamins and proteins attainable through each, the effects on quality and length of ... • 3. Persuasive Essay On Vegetarianism The quote "A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral" from Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy, encompasses what vegetarianism is about. Veganism and vegetarianism is generally associated with leafy green salads but there is a long list of health benefits attached to that way of eating and a reduction in livestock farming benefits our environment. Diving into the benefits of becoming a vegetarian or vegan, there has been extensive research done on how a teak in diet can reduce risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Plant–based dieting is a lifestyle that is beneficial for health, moral and environmental reasons. Numerous studies have shown meat–free diets have a plethora of health benefits such as helping reduce risk of heart disease and cancer and controlling diabetes. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of deaths in the United States, one which could be prevented with a low cholesterol diet such as vegetarianism or veganism. The website for American Heart Association says that in order to reduce risk of heart disease people should, "Use up as many calories as you take in." Gidon Eshel and Pamela Martin, two reporters for the University of Chicago News Office, conducted a study in an article titled "A Vegetarian Diet Is More Energy Efficient Than a Meat Diet"that showed that the vegetarian diet is the most energy efficient ... • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism About 75 million are vegetarian of choice and an approximate that there is more than a half a billion of them. The figure that will slowly multiply with growing wealth and culture (Leahy et al 2). A vegetarian nourishment may play an advantageous role in health and avoiding obesity. Vegetarianism encompasses a spectrum of eating patterns: from people who wish to be known as 'vegetarians ' regardless including some animal meat in their meals, but meats products should be omitted such as fish and fowl from a vegetarian dish (Lea and Worsley 505). Even though some people may be in contradiction of vegetarianism, it is a lifestyle and a diet that many follow and it is advantageous because it corresponds to religions, ethics, and has health ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When comparing animals to a human being, we think they do not have a soul: if they are able to sense of their own mortality and grieve the loss of companions. Animals have language, melodious abilities, a sense of the mysterious, originality and liveliness. Animals possess a sense of right and wrong; they are capable of fidelity, altruism, and even self–sacrifice, are not this attributes of having a soul. In some religions, such as Jains, the people cover their mouths to prevent injuring insects by breathing them in; in addition, they fashion a broom of soft quills and mildly clear the paths in front of them as they make their way over it. Their worships and values for all kind of lives even smear to root vegetables. They too are whose lives are as important as humans (Holloway 25). In Jainism, souls who lived harmfully came back for the next life in a lower form, maybe a snake or a frog and souls did their period on the wheel of rebirth, just as too much nourishment made their bodies sustainable and hard to drag around. So Jains supposed evil conduct adds burden to the soul and made it resistant to get off the wheel of rebirth as a punishment (Holloway 25). This religion shows us how caring they are for the smallest of the creatures in the world, their belief impels that we should respect every living organism, show a great example of a perfect religion. • 5. Persuasive Essay On Vegetarianism "7.3 million people in the U.S alone, are vegetarians." Those people, of course, are missing out on many amazing things such as: sausage, hamburgers, pork and something no one can ever forget, bacon. Although, those 7.3 million people are missing out of those tasty items, they may not exactly be doing themselves or the environment a favor. Vegetarianismbegan because people did not want to kill or harm animals in any possible way. Some thought it was inhumane how the animals where kept, treated and killed for their meat. Society also thought it to be a healthier way of living, and of course for the most obvious reason, it became a new trend and everyone became a vegetarian because their friends and family where. Some religious cultures also do not eat meat because it is against their religion, such as; Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Jains and many other religious groups. As I said earlier, people became vegetarians because they thought it was healthier, that may indeed not be completely true. Vegetarianism should not be practiced in America because it lowers nutrients, is more expensive, and harmful to the environment. Previously I stated that being a vegetarian is not necessarily healthier. For those of you who do not know what a vegetarian is, it is someone who does not eat meat, fish, and some of the time no animal products. Completely cutting out meat will lower your protein and can lower your iron. There are vitamins you can take to get those needed ingredients in your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Negative Essay On Vegetarianism Is Vegetarianism A Healthier Lifestyle? Healthy lifestyles have come to dominate the minds of many people in a contemporary society, a fact that has brought to life many exciting trends in all aspects of social functioning. As food is directly related to our health, it is no wonder that people have began to pay increased attention to the food they eat. In particular, this interest has sparked renewal of vegetarian and vegan lifestyles, which is the best way to attain a healthy lifestyle through abandoning animal foods. Vegetarianismhas important philosophical grounds related to murdering animals and the fact that all life on earth should be respected and protected (" Nutrition Ecology" par 1). Unlike extreme ideas about animal rights that go as far as forbid people to ride mules for their benefit, advocates of vegetarianism proceed from one simple principle – that killing is wrong and animals have the same right to live. In theory, such a position means that a person is striving to live in harmony with the outer world, a feature that in itself can promote healthier lifestyle. However, there more matter–of–fact arguments in favor of vegetarianism, and these arguments hinge on the nutritional benefits of a veggie diet. There is no need to remind that obesity in many developed nations including the US is acquiring threatening dimensions, turning into a national problem. Americans stick to their traditional diets that have too many calories and too much fat, cholesterol, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Roadkill And Vegetarianism In this article the writer argues that eating roadkill is the perfect meat for vegetarians and vegans, too, provided their objections to meat are its murder or its environmental implications. The animal was not raised for meat, it was not killed for meat; it is just simply and accidently meat–manna from minivans. Giving the example of insurance company statistics on roadkill deer, the writer said that we can produce 20 billon pounds of free range venison even if we salvaged only a third of meat. Roadkill arrived with the age of the automobile. The legal ramifications of eating roadkill are a bit dicey in different states. Tennessee, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Alaska don't take roadkill as big issue; they think that all roadkills belongs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism A vegetarian diet does not consist of meat, poultry, or fish instead fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. Depending on the person, a vegetarian diet may consist of eggs and dairy products. There are also different classifications of vegetarians. For example, lactovegetarians will consume dairy, and lacto–ovovegetarians will consume both dairy and eggs. Lastly, semivegetarians will consume fish but nomeat or poultry. It is not known when vegetarianism started, but oldest record dates to the 6th century BC in Europe. A group of religious followers of the Orphic mysteries banned sacrificing animals and the consumption of any animal product. In Greece, Pythagoras was developing ideas that linked meat consumption and reincarnation, and this ultimately caused some to avoid consuming meat. This lead to a phenomenon called that Pythagorean way of life which was practiced by other philosophers and writers until the 19th century. The reasons for switching to a vegetarian diet was similar to some mentioned today. The ancient Greeks believed that like humans, animals could communicate and think, and humans were responsible to care for the animals. In addition, the Greeks believed that consuming meat was impacted the mind and health. This lead them to think that a plant–based diet cleansed the soul and aligned them closer to god. There are no data recorded about vegetarianism after the 6th century BC. The next known period dates to 1847 when the first vegetarian society ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Benefits Of Veganism And Vegetarianism Veganism and Vegetarianism Veganism and vegetarianism are widespread trends that have been gaining attention rapidly all around the world. For some people, they are only a diet. On the other hand, for others, they are a lifestyle. Veganism and Vegetarianism are both diverse diets that can affect the human body and environment in different ways. Veganismis a lifestyle that excludes any use of animal products, such as meats, dairy, leather, etc. The main purpose of veganism is to not support animal exploitation, thus not support animal cruelty. Few vegans believe that everyone should become vegan to help cure the world in ways where we do not have to promote acts such as deforestation, and do not have to continue killing animals for our own desires. However, the majority of vegans are satisfied with their own actions, knowing that they can make a difference on their own. On the contrary, vegetarianism is a not as strict of a diet as veganism, much less a lifestyle. Many vegetarians choose this lifestyle because they are attempting to fix their health, want to take part in saving animals, or simply do not like the taste of meat. In a way, vegetarianism is a healthier diet than veganism, even though vegetarians wouldn't be losing pounds quite as fast. In the Harvard Health Publishing, the searchers describe the way that vegetarianism can help your body. " Compared with meat eaters, vegetarians tend to consume less saturated fat and cholesterol and more vitamins C and E, dietary fiber, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, and phytochemicals (plant chemicals), such as carotenoids and flavonoids. As a result, they're likely to have lower total and LDL (bad) cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and lower body mass index (BMI), all of which are associated with longevity and a reduced risk for many chronic diseases. " The major diseases that vegetarianism can prevent are heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. In fact, vegetarians are 25% less likely to die from a heart disease than meat eaters. This means that a lot of people could be saved with this diet. Personally, if I could do anything to live longer and healthier, I would do it. • 13. Vegetarianism Is Bad For The Environment The final argument comes from Peter Dockrill, who claims that vegetarianism is bad for the environment. He begins with talking about a Carnegie Mellon Study, which states that the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) , current recommended number of daily servings, if followed to the letter, would actually be bad (Dockrill 2015). However, this does not necessarily have anything to do with a vegetarian diet. Dockrill (2015) discusses how lettuce and other plants emit more greenhouse gas emissions than some meat products. He proposes three scenarios that could occur. The first, is that if people ate less of what they already do it would decrease the environmental impact (Dockrill 2015). • 14. Arguments Against Vegetarianism Albert Einstein once said, "Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." Many enlightened and intelligent people have along with Einstein come to realize that the problems Americans face with health and the environment can be solved with simply partaking in the more compassionate lifestyle accredited to the vegetarian movement. Americans should adopt vegetarian diets because they are more beneficial to one's health, more sustainable for the environment, and more ethical than the standard Western diet. Adopting a vegetarian diet has exceptional health benefits that can't be ignored. For instance, in the article "Why Turn toVegetarianism," award ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, in the article "Vegetarianism Is a Moral Decision with Many Benefits," psychologist, professor, and author, Melanie Joy states, "When we say yes to health, we say no to harm. We protect our bodies as well of the bodies of the animals–approximately 20,000 of them per minute in the U.S. alone–who are brutally raised and slaughtered for their flesh and excretions." Animals are intelligent, loving, and very much deserving of life. Humans have come to think that they own every animal on the planet and can extort, exploit and execute them at no cost except $5.99 a pound. However, there is a much greater cost to the meat on America's plate–– millions of animals' lives. Furthermore, in the same article, Melanie Joy states, "Animals are routinely castrated, de–beaked, and de–horned without any painkiller whatsoever. They are born and raised in crowded, filthy, dark environments where their existence is one of abject misery and terror." Animals are sentient beings with nervous systems and thought processes. The pain and suffering animals in commercial farming must endure preceding their murder is harrowing. Many opponents of a vegetarian diet say that meat consumption is healthful and humane, and that producing vegetables causes many of the same environmental problems as producing meat. They also argue that humans have been eating and enjoying meat for 2.3 million years. In Western culture, vegetarianism dates back to Ancient Greece. The mathematician Pythagoras (570 BC – 495 BC) advocated vegetarianism; a meatless diet was commonly called the "Pythagorean diet" until the term vegetarian became popular during the 1800s. The philosopher Plato (428 BC – 348 BC) described a vegetarian diet as "divinely ordained" ("Should People"). The major reason I think more people are opting to become vegetarians is to reduce ... • 17. The Benefits Of Vegetarianism Vegetarianism is a controversial topic that involves the consumption of meat. Should one become a vegetarian? If consuming meat involves the production of factory farming and health risks the consuming meat is not good. If consuming meat is not good, one should become a vegetarian. Therefore one should become a vegetarian. A suitable beginning would be to define a factory farm. A factory farm is a large, industrial operation. It raises large numbers of animals for food. About nine billion animals live in factory farms to live a miserable existence. Newborns torn from their mom days after being born. Sometimes even hours. They are then transported and kept in small cages. Or their is life in cramped and overcrowded pens. Males in egg farms are not valuable. Tens of thousands of them are into the trash because their meat is unsuitable. They are also ground alive into feed for other animals. Male calves of dairy cows eat liquid and iron deficient diets. They are in crates for their lives that keep them as immobile as possible. This is to keep their muscles weak and tender. Most of these animals at these farms are indoors. Few are able to live happy lives. Because of this they are unable to fulfill their instinctual urges. They become psychotic, neurotic and have repetitive behaviors. Many become cannibalistic. The animals are also give a consistent regimen of antibiotics and growth hormones. To keep disease and death away. "Factory farming and non–intensive family farms animals could have surgical modifications such as beak, toe, tail removal, ear tagging and clipping, teeth removal, branding, dehorning, castration and ovary removal" (QUOTE). Due to the high cost of anesthesia this is all performed without it. During transportation to the slaughterhouse many animals die. Due to starvation or freezing to death. The animals who are unable to walk are "downers" (QUOTE) and die in the yard. Animals with fur die in the wild. Or they live in small cages and fed each other's remains. They are then killed by anal electrocution so their pelts are not marred. Factory farming is immoral and has turned many people to vegetarianism. Another reason would be this argument. Ethics and Morality in Vegetarianism "The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that their treatment has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality."(Schopenhauer). I always wondered why some people are not so drawn to the consumption of meat and fed up with only one thought about it. Why so many people loathe of blood, and why so few people can easily kill and be slaughter animal, until they just get used to it? This reaction should say something about the most important moments in the code, which was programmed in the human psyche. An ancient Greek philosopher and scientist Pythagoras was convinced that whoever kills an animal without any remorse can easily kill a man. Other philosophers were even more straightforward and indicated that cruelty to animals leads to wars. It leads me to believe that the attitude towards animals is not something we can merely write–off as a showcase of the innate "cruelty of man", but an indicator of our society's ethical level. If more people become aware of the suffering and death of animals that we, as a people, have caused, and acknowledge it, it would be a small, but significant sign of moral growth. Although moral principles have gained increasing recognition due to their usefulness for the society, i.e. for pragmatic reasons, the evolution of ethics had different roots – psychological and spiritual. It is based on the person's ability for empathy: which is the basis of moral behavior of a person, his kindness, and decency. It can be argued that the ability for empathy separates man from the world of animals. With the development of spirituality and feelings of compassion, people began to feel uncomfortable by the fact that their actions were constantly associated with the infliction of suffering to other beings, and even their death. • 19. Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism Healthy lifestyles have come to dominate the minds of many people in the contemporary society, a fact that has brought to life many exciting trends in all aspects of social functioning. As food is directly related to our health, it is no wonder that people have begun to pay increased attention to the food they eat. In particular, this interest has sparked renewal of vegetarianism, which is an easy way to attain a healthy lifestyle through abandoning animal foods. Vegetarianism has important philosophical grounds related to murdering animals and the fact that all life on earth should be respected and protected. However, becoming vegetarian also has its cons because it can cause the human body to become deficient on some of the body's needs such as iron. With that, there are many advantages and disadvantages to vegetarianism that could make or break the choice of becoming one. A vegetarian lifestyle is known to provide the body with many health benefits. In this case, it all comes down to the proper diet being enforced. Becoming a vegetarian, but consuming fat cakes would not be benefiting vegetarianism. However enforcing the appropriate diet would indeed benefit the body because as "Should People Become" says, "According to a peer–reviewed 2003 Oxford University study of 37,875 healthy men and women aged 20–97, 5.4% of meat eaters were obese compared to 3% of vegetarians. Meat eaters had an average Body Mass Index (BMI) 8.3% higher than vegetarians." With that, it can be seen that vegetarianism in general, causes the dieter's body mass index to be lower than a meat–eating dieter. This is because of eating healthier food with lower calories and maintaining a strict diet. On the contrary, following a vegetarian diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Vegetarians consume proteins through legumes and nuts, but these items often fall short of providing the body with its imperative needs (Stein et. al.). • 21. The Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism "Every time we sit at a table to enjoy the fruits and grain and vegetables from our good earth, remember that they come from the work of men and women and children who have been exploited for generations." These words of Cesar Chavez, co–founder of the United Farm Workers, perfectly describe the injustice farm workers face in producing our food and including humans when talking about cruelty free. Conversations surrounding notions of vegetarianism as inherently cruelty free seldom incorporate the advocacy of more rights for farm workers. As a conflicted meat eater, I can concede that the fight for vegetarianism is honorable and consuming fewer animal products would be beneficial for our society, however, promoting meat–free meals and products as "cruelty free" mistakenly limits the cruelty of the food production system to animals. Comparatively, our food production system also exploits factory farm workers, a point also overlooked in conversations regarding ethical eating. Ultimately, the fundamental problem with vegetarianism is the cruelty free platform, that too often ignores the inhumane working conditions of farm workers. That being so, not eating meat does not place you above everyone else on the moral scale or mean you practice cruelty free when exploited laborers in our food production system, most of whom are undocumented, do not have their liberation. By: Samuel Varjabedian In this day and age, many people are removing meat from their diets to pursue health benefits. These can include: Reducing Stress, Lowering Cholesterol Intake, Increasing Mineral Intake, Lowering Depression, Reducing the Risk of Cardiovascular Failure and, Lowering Carcinogenic exposure found in meat. These benefits can come at the price of nutritional deficiencies, in particular a compound known as cobalamin (Vitamin B–12) has been observed repeatedly low in numerous studies. (Piccolli, 2015) [1] Due to the complex nature of cobalamin, it is very unlikely simple life like plants would contain adequate amounts required for bodily functions such as: Digestion, Artery flexibility, and lowering toxicity. These functions are dependent on micro –nutrients such as Omega–3–Fatty–Acids, B–6 (Pyridoxine), Folate, and B–12. Out of all these, B–12 and Omega–3 are the most difficult to obtain through plant matter alone; supplements are usually taken by vegetarians for this reason. (Rathold, K., J., 2016) [2] The process of Methylation (Hart, G., Dr.) [4] A process known as methylation is used to cleanse the body from heavy metal toxicity absorbed through daily life, In this process an amino acid called Methionine is combined with cobalamin to form methyl–cobalamin, creating a by–product called homocysteine. On the front of the menu, there is a picture of a cow, but all you can think about is how depressing it is that you are about to eat that cute little cow. I have been in this situation many times in my life. In the year 1866, vegetarianism was introduced as a lifestyle for people. According to Harvard Health, "People become vegetarians for many reasons, including health, religious convictions, concerns about animal welfare" (Becoming). Many religious groups, such as Catholics, would have certain days they could not eat meat. One such example would be Lent. During Lent, catholics give up meat in order to honor Jesus. This is still a common tradition that occurs today. This During a recent study in 2009, "As many as 8 million American adults [were] vegetarians" (Traugh 6). Vegetarianism is compatible with the major world religions–the Eastern Religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism) and the Abrahamic Religions (Judaism, Islam,Christianity, and BahГЎ'Г Faith). Among these, it is most commonly practiced by those of the Buddhist, Christian and Islamic faith. Vegetarianism within the Buddhist culture is taught along with the "Four Noble Truths," which focus on the acts of suffering. Since the Buddhist faith accepts the idea of karma, it is believed that in order to maintain a life of peace and happiness and remain free of suffering, one must refrain from the harming, injuring or killing of any living being. As part of the Christian faith, animal cruelty is forbidden. The teachings of Jesus Christ focus on the ideas of love, compassion, mercy and acceptance. In American society and other cultures, meat is a main food that is consumed, yet not by everyone. Dating back to medieval times, some meats were not consumed due to the "impurities" they were seen to be by the religions of the time. Throughout history, this has developed from not eating red meat, to not eating any meat at all, and even further to the vegan extreme of not eating any animal products at all. One of the main dietal changes people make is the choice of eating meat. "Eating, as has been commonly remarked, produces a particularly intimate identification with the consumed product: we are what we eat. It is therefore not surprising when we look cross culturally at food patterns that meat, and to a lesser extent animal products, are by far the most common focus of taboo, regulation and avoidance," (pg. 18, Twigg). Though the religious establishments were mostly responsible for stating that meat, mainly red meat, could not be consumed due to the filthy nature of the animals it was taken from, people still were allowed to eat fish and poultry, except on certain days of fasting, like Good Friday or Lent. So, vegetarianism started out as a form of religious restraint on the people's diets. However, today's vegetarian differs from that of the older generations in that it has become an individual choice, relating to the person's feelings about the animals, but not necessarily being limited to that reason. "In the west& vegetarianism is very much a product of individual choice, and indeed, requiring one, as it does, to step outside the culturally prescribed forms of eating, depends on the development of a highly individuated sense of the self," (pg. 19, Twigg). • 31. Negative Essay On Vegetarianism Environmental issues such as global warming, water pollution, climate change and many more, are influencing every human, animal, and nation. There are many other ways to reduce the impacts but I will discuss vegetarian or vegan diet. A vegetarian diet is when a diet does not have meat, poultry, or fish, while a vegan diet further excludes dairy products. By excluding meat, poultry or dairy products from our diets, we can protect our earth planet, as producing meat causes more greenhouse gases emissions than any other environmental impact. To supply more meat for consuming, companies are creating more space for farm factories by destroying our forests. Factories mistreat animals to gain more profits by giving them drugs to grow bigger, faster. To raise animals, they moreover need an immense amount of land, food, energy and water, that is using our precious resources. The more meat we eat, the more meat is produced, and the more the resources are used in raising animals. We must stop now and make the correct choices. Vegetarian or vegan diets are healthy as they contain the nutritious including the protein that our bodies need. If everyone becomes a vegetarian or vegan fewer supply will be used, animals won't be mistreated by companies and we will lead nutritious, healthy lives while living in a healthy environment. Studies with staggering statistics have shown how much of a negative impact producing meat for consumption is having on this planet. "It takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef, while producing 1 pound of tofu only requires 244 gallons of water (PETA)." Factory farms create manure which produces runoff and is one of the leading causes for the pollution in rivers and lakes. This also poses an issue for the air that people are breathing. "Studies have shown that [animal waste] lagoons emit toxic airborne chemicals that can cause inflammatory, immune, irritation and neurochemical problems in humans" (Foer). Another issue is the land that is being wasted. Threats like deforestation become a reality when crops are being used to feed animals and not humans directly. Only 4 million acres are being used to grow plants that go directly to humans, while 56 million acres are being used to grow feed for animals, and this is in the United States alone (PETA). • 35. Vegetarianism for Dummies Essay They say, "You are what you eat" and if making good food choices makes you a healthier and happier person, why are healthy food trends seemingly misunderstood and becoming a thing of the past? This semester I will be researching the advantages of choosing to obtain a vegetarian lifestyle and why some individuals are making arguments that are extremely against the practice. This topic is appropriate for a semester of sustained research because there are multiple viewpoints on the issue (including people who have experienced positive health benefits when they cut meat out of their diets, people who disapprove of the industry's animal treatment, and people who strongly feel that there are extreme health risks and financial burdens that come ... (Wiki) The film for me shined light on the dark aspects of American food industries, influenced me to do further research on the topic, and evidently considerably influenced my perspective of food. While the vision of animal cruelty painted in the film ultimately made me decide to become a practicing vegetarian, I would mainly blame my continued lifestyle choice on the benefits that I experienced when I initially made the transition as well as the harsh realities of the unsanitary procedures reveled in the film. Overall I would say, vegetarianism has made me a healthier person by making me constantly aware of what I put into my body (a main reason that I believe the issue is worth research), it has cured an esophageal health problem that I have been having since birth, and best of all in an essence the lifestyle choice lifted a huge weight off my shoulders by giving more energy, better physical health, and overall has made me a more confident person. Because of this positive experience, I am an extreme advocate for the way of life, and this topic is particularly compelling to me because I have a difficult time understanding the prejudices that make vegetarianism a national controversy. In my research, I hope to gain greater insight on the health deficiencies that align with vegetarianism and eventually crack the myth of strict dieting being difficult to adhere to (especially for people with lower economic statuses or people on the run). • 36. Negatives Of Vegetarianism Cutting off meat from one's diet comes with many benefits. For example, energy matters: eating meat is "far less energy efficient than relying on a vegetarian diet (and leaves a far greater ecological footprint)," because in the trophic levels, only 10% of energy moves with each level when an animal consumes another (Withgott PAGE NUMBER). By the time a human consumesmeat, they only gain about 30% of optimal energy, versus 90% energy in a vegetarian diet (Withgott). Other benefits include lower cholesterol, lower blood sugar, and lower body mass index than meat eaters (Sifferlin). Likewise, there is a reduced risk of heart disease and colon, stomach, and prostate cancer (Beezhold, Le). In a cross–sectional study in Nutrition Journal, Vegetarians have been found to have less negative emotions than omnivores (Beezhold). With a vegetarian diet, there is less negative impact on physically and mentally. A few "drawbacks" tovegetarianism are a lack of protein, iron, and vitamin B12. Despite popular belief, these can all be found in plant–based foods. There are amino acids in various greens, nuts, and fruits: sprouts, broccoli, almonds, pecans, bananas, dates, etc. (Freedman). Not to mention, protein from animals can actually cause health issues for humans such as, osteoporosis and diabetes and cancer (Freedman). Beans and legumes, an assortment of fresh and dried fruit, almonds, peas, spinach, etc. all have iron (Getting). Then, vitamin B12 can be found in foods like, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Advantage Of Vegetarianism Is it Worth Being a Vegetarian? These days, many people around the world are changing their eating habits towards vegetarianism, which implies a diet where the consumption of animal products is avoided. There are different positive aspects that explain this trend. However, as always there is another side of the coin, the disadvantages will be greater as our diet becomes more restrictive. The idea of being a vegetarian personally seems to me a very radical decision, everything must have a balance even the food, because it is a very important factor in our daily life. We must be aware of what we eat, trying to do it in a healthy way and without the need to abuse the consumption of products of animal origin. Being vegetarian in simple terms is not eating meats. One of the most important reasons why people decide to change their diet is health, because it determines the amount of essential nutrients for the proper functioning of our body. "The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the British Medical Association, and the World Health Organization (WHO) have all published studies that conclude that vegetarian diets provide certain health benefits, based on findings that vegetarians tend to weigh less, have lower cholesterol levels, and even face a reduced risk of some kinds of cancer." (Vegetarianism). The list includes heart disease, diabetes, gallstones, kidney stones, osteoporosis and diverticulitis. However, to avoid deficiencies in proteins, calcium, iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12, omega–3 and iodine, we must inform ourselves very well when we are performing a vegetarian diet or be advised us by a nutritionist, to be sure that our food plan satisfies all the nutrients that our body needs. The destruction of the environment around oneself can take a toll on their spirituality and purity. There is immense damage caused by energy production and wasteful consumerism. One of the largest yet least known contributors to global warming and environmental destruction generally is eating meat. The basic problem is meat is higher on the food chain when compared to plants. Therefore, more resources are required to produce nutrition in the form of meat. In the past this was not an issue because animals typically ate things that were not food for humans, like grass. However in today's world, most food animals live on grains and other resource–intensive products (Sujato, n.d.). This means that meat requires more energy, water, space, and all other resources than plants. In addition to the burden on the environment, this creates a range of localized problems. Things that stem from the use of fertilizers, the disposal of vast amounts of animal waste, etc. are all contributors to the destruction of the environment. So, as compared with the past, eating meat involves far more cruelty. It brings harm to innocent animals, creates disease, and damages the environment. If one were to approach this question as one of weights and balances, they would quickly see the scales have tipped drastically to the side of not eating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
