Pro-Con Position on Vegetarianism
Vegetarianism is often associated with its advantages
including, weight loss, decreased risk for heart disease and
saving lives of innocent animals. However, there is are several
disadvantages, considering the harm it may cause such as,
environmental issues and put person who do not eat meat at risk
for health-related issues such as anemia. Supporters of
vegetarianism may recommend becoming a vegetarian; however,
evidence proves that this diet may cause health related issues
and negatively affect the environment.
1st Counter-Argument (your oppositions’ point)
Health related risk from vegetarianism is steadily progressing as
more patrons believe that by making the choice to become
vegetarians promotes their health indirectly by consuming more
fruits and vegetables. According to Dittfeld, A., Gwizdek, K.,
Jagielski, P., Brzęk, J., & Ziora, K. experts on vegetarian diets
stated, “One study has shown a case of a boy whose strict
vegetarian diet led to his death as a result of cachexia.” (2017, p
62) Cachexia can be defined as muscle faintness or wasting, this
can cause muscle death and overall respiratory issues. Though it
is important to eat vegetables and fruits, having a well -balanced
diet is even more imperative especially for children. Children’s
bodies are constantly growing and need vitamins and minerals
from protein to encourage their growth. Persons with inferior
levels of protein, sodium, iron, manganese and phosphorus in
their blood and body systems are particularly cautious when
changing to a vegetarian diet.
1st Rebuttal (your point)
Vegetarian diets prevent the leading cause of death in America;
heart disease. Vegetarians ultimately reduce their amount of fat
and cholesterol intake from meat, which may enhance their
overall wellbeing and diet. As stated in the article, “Diet plays a
key role in the most pervasive and deadly diseases afflicting the
American population” Ballaro, B., & Sprague, N. (2016).
Persons who consumer fruits and vegetables can help maintain
wellbeing and prevent cancer, heart attacks and stroke.
Commonly red meat and heavily saturated foods are connected
to cardiac attacks while, vegetarians consume natural sugars
provided by fruit and natural supplemental vitamins from
vegetables.
2nd Counter-Argument
Supplements with acquired proteins and minerals have been
created to meet the needs of those who do not consume meat.
Vegetarians enhance their diets with over the counter vitamins
and minerals to compensate for what they are missing. As
stated, in the article “Vegans, who reject all animal products,
including milk, eggs and honey, place themselves at even
greater risk for malnutrition” Issitt, M., & Carson-Dewitt, R.
(2016). Natural recourses such as eggs and milk come from
animals since the beginning of mankind. Some persons feel
uncomfortable eating meat and meat product due to the
condition’s animals are being treated in and the additives
injected into the animal of choice. Individuals make the
decision to stop eating meat or meat products ‘because of their
religion. These individuals are still at risk and need
supplements in the form of pills or supplemental beverages that
one may consume. However, these supplements do not acquire
the same nutritional value that natural resources do. Promotion
of these supplements can harm employme nt opportunities for
cattle farms and decrease income for meat corporations.
2nd Rebuttal
Adequate intake of vital vitamins and minerals essentially
comes from fruits and vegetables. Relying solely on the earth’s
natural resources can positively impact the consumer’s health
and contribute to enhancing technology that increases meat
substitutions. By creating these technologies, employment
opportunities are promoted. Technological advances help
vegetarians provide themselves with the proper amount of
vitamins and nutritional content that they lack from not eating
meat by following what they eat and how they can compensate
for the vitamins they are missing. According to Vesanto Melina,
Winston Craig, Susan Levin, “These applications for mobile
devices allow vegetarians to discover nutritional needs, track
intake, and locate restaurants and markets where vegan foods
are available” (2016, p. 1070) Promoting technology and
positively impacting economics is vital when indulging
vegetarians. Through closely monitori ng dietary intake of
vitamins and minerals, it can cause a decrease of mental under
development for children coming from a vegetarian mother.
Adhering to a technologically sound nutrition can cause
vegetarians to have a healthy weight and a well balance regime.
3rd Counter-Argument
Through research I have concluded vegetarianism may
jeopardize the stability of the ecosystem and damage the
environment. For example, consuming large amounts of fish
rather than meat can cause fisherman to overfish to meet
consumer requirements. Another way vegetarianism may
negatively impact the environment is the increase need to for
agricultural products. Animals can become deceased during
harvest season due to the increase in loss of their dietary needs
and shelter. Studies have shown “about six animals per acre, or
52-77% of the animals (such as birds, mice, and rabbits) that
live in agricultural crop fields, are killed during harvest.”
(Vegetarianism., (2018) Agriculture influences stabilizing
conservational requirements by providing housing and
alimentary resources. Thus, it is evident vegetarianism may
destructively impact the environment and cause damage to the
ecosystem.
3rd Rebuttal
Vegetarian diets often consist solely on vegetables and fruits
that come from plants. Vegans often don’t eat meat as an act of
morality, animals are sacrificed everyday on cattle farms to
provide dietary needs to people across the globe. According to
Flatley, R. M. L. S. “plant sources can meet the body’s need for
protein as long as a variety of plant foods are consumed.”
(2019, p.43). Often the conditions of these cattle farms are
poor and cause abuse to animals. Excessive killing of animals
for human needs can overall negatively impact the environment
and lead to global warming. Animal cruelty is one of the
leading cause of vegetarians becoming solely plant based due to
the excessive killing of these animals for oral fixation. Often, it
is forgotten that non-humans still have emotion and can fear,
and feel pain as well.
In conclusion, vegetarianism can both positively and negatively
affect the environment, consumer health, and employment
opportunities. Vegans have their right to make a decision to not
eat meat. It is most effective when vegans have a plant based
diet, that uses serval aspects of legumes, soy and other fruits
and vegetable to meet nutritional requirements. However, this
can cause animals who live in these areas to no longer have
shelter or food and eventually die out. Cattle farms slaughter
animals in filthy conditions and ultimately contribute to global
warming. Thus, vegans do not want to eat the meat provided by
these cattle farms because of the conditions the animals are held
in. Likewise, technological advances for providing a well -
balanced nutrition for vegans can benefit persons seeking
employment by providing them with more prospects.

ADHD Drug Overdoses
A terrifying reality is sweeping the youth of our nation
with the abuse of the medications designed to improve their
lives. A recent study has noted a significant increase in
hospitalizations and overdoses related to ADHD medications.
Data from 2000-2014 was analyzed by researchers from U.S.
poison control centers. More than 156,000 cases during that
time frame were reported related to ADHD drug exposure.
Although exposures to treatments can be deadly if abused or
misused these exposures decreased slightly from 2011-2014.
The rate of incidents from 2000-2011 swelled nearly 72%
(Mukherjee 2018 para 2). Almost half (42%) of these incidents
were related to simple medication error. Although suicide
attempts and medication abuse accounted for over half the
exposures for teenagers 13-19 years of age.
What is the cause of the increase? Some researchers theorize.
“The increasing number and rate of reported ADHD medication
exposures during the study period is consistent with increasing
trends in ADHD diagnosis and medication prescribing.
Exposures associated with suspected suicide or medication
abuse and/or misuse among adolescents are of particular
concern,” wrote the study authors.
Overdoses and side effects of ADHD drugs account for
hospitalizing 3,100 Americans annually, children accounting for
80% of them. The CDC reported 60% of the overdoses were
accidental and if parents had kept the medications locked in
child proof case they were also preventable. A CDC
epidemiologist Dr. Adam L. Cohen reported the study was done
to figure out "adverse events linked to the widely prescribed
drugs, especially serious heart problems that have led to calls
for the Food and Drug Administration to require its most
serious "black-box" warnings on the stimulants (para 4)”
Researchers found in most cases with children under 12 got
their hands on ADHD medication such as Ritalin or Adderall, or
a double-dose of their prescription was given by mistake.
According to the report 18% of the incidents were made due to a
teenager intentionally abusing the medications or attempting
suicide. A fair amount of calls to the poison control center were
made by parents worried after their child was exposed to ADHD
drugs. Even though the child was not ill or actually sick. "So an
exposure to a medication does not necessarily mean there's been
a poisoning," said senior researcher Dr. Gary Smith.
According to data from the Texas Poison Control Network, a
total of 18,214 exposures to ADHD medications in patients
under age 19 years old were reported from 2000 to 2017.
Overall, the numbers increase in 2004 and peaked in 2011,
leading to a rise of 115% from 2000 to 2011. The increase was
more significant than the 7% increase from 2000-2011 seen
nationally and matches the disproportionate increase in
prescribing seen in Texas over this period. The most common
age range affected was under 12 years old and accounted for a
total of 76% of the exposures. Effects were more most
commonly reported in patients age 13-19 years old. It is not a
surprising finding due to toxicity being more likely to be
exposures and they also align with the paradigm that exposures
in this age group were most likely intentional in nature. The
TPCN summarized their study as “this analysis reported trends
in ADHD medication exposure in Texas and compared
exposures to national trends. ADHD medication exposures were
most commonly seen in the younger age groups, encompassing
children 0-12 years, and exposures were overall more frequently
accidental (p.5)”
Research has documented the rampant abuse of ADHD
medications in the high school and college age group. “In an
attempt to improve performance in athletics and academics
these medications are used, often times without a prescription.
Students in this age group take ADHD medications in large
amounts recreationally, students often combined these
medications with other controlled substances such as alcohol,
cocaine, or methamphetamine (Soloway 2011).” Rose Ann
Gould Soloway, an RN, BSN, MSEd, DABAT emerita Clinical
Toxicologist performed a study that found “poisonings from
such combinations can cause multiple physiological effects such
as high body temperature, seizures, heart attack, stroke, and
death. Parents and health care providers must teach that
prescription drugs for ADHD cannot be shared safely or legally.
Medical consequences can be catastrophic and legal
consequences can be severe, as well (para 19)”.
It is obvious the parents and patients that are taking medications
for ADHD need to be well informed about the consequences of
abusing and overdosing on prescription medications. When
prescription medication is taken with other controlled
substances the physical effects can be dangerous, especially if
the patients already has preexisting medical problems. Everyone
from the doctors providing prescriptions the pharmacists and
the parents of children taking ADHD medications need to be
educated on the dangers of using any drug recreationally.

introduction here. Be sure to incorporate an attention grabber .
You may also provide any necessary contextual or background
info here if needed. Do not attempt to prove the thesis statement
in these sentences; don’t have obvious ideas. Prove the thesis
below it, not above it. If appropriate, provide a bridge from the
introductory sentences to the thesis. Remember to employ an
objective tone by applying only 3rd person point of view (no
1st: I, me, my, we, our, us, mine) or 2nd: you, your person point
of view), unless in direct quote. Then put your thesis statement
here; the thesis must be one complete sentence combining your
opposition’s argument and your rebuttal.
1st Counter-Argument (your oppositions’ point)
Begin with a topic sentence written in your own words that
presents your grounds. Next, apply the evidence/warrant.
Signal phrases are highly recommended to introduce new
sources (ex: According to Dr. John Smith, head physician at the
Mayo Clinic…). Cite your sources in APA format via
parenthetical citations. Follow through with a few sentences
examining the evidence and connecting it back to your main
point. If needed, apply any conciliatory language to connect to
the audience and avoid putting them on the defensive. Strive 5-
10 developed sentences in a college level paragraph.

5 (divided or alternating) your draft will either continue with 2
other counter-arguments similar to the one above, followed by 3
rebuttal paragraphs – or it will jump straight to the 1st rebuttal
as demonstrated below.
1st Rebuttal (your point)
Begin with a topic sentence written in your own words that
presents your grounds. Then identify the first point of
contention. Discuss this point and why you disagree with it.
Point out faults in the argument; explain why the point has little
merit. Then argue why your ideas are superior. Then, apply the
evidence/warrant. Signal phrases are highly recommended to
introduce new sources (ex: According to Dr. John Smith, head
physician at the Mayo Clinic…). Cite your sources in APA
format via parenthetical citations. Follow through with a few
sentences examining the evidence and connecting it back to
your main point. No conciliatory verbiage is needed in the
rebuttal paragraph, but you should still remain objective and
respectful. Strive for a minimum of 5 developed sentences in a
college level paragraph.
….From here you will develop your remaining body paragraphs
following a similar approach. In the final paper, students should
have at least 6 body paragraphs: 3 counterarguments & 3
rebuttals, applying either the alternating or divided
organizational approach.
Then put your conclusion or final paragraph here. Reiterate
your main argument. Avoid repetition or straight summarizing
of earlier information. Instead, apply one of the concluding
techniques from our reading or Week 3 lesson. As before, strive
for a minimum of 5 developed sentences per paragraph. Then
revise, edit, and proof your draft….and submit for an ‘A’!

Cite all 5 required credible sources here in APA format. List

Running head PRO-CON POSITION ON VEGETARIANISM1PRO-CON POSITIO

  • 1. Running head: PRO-CON POSITION ON VEGETARIANISM 1 PRO-CON POSITION ON VEGETARIANISM 2 Pro-Con Position on Vegetarianism Maxine Philitas Chamberlain University Course Number: Course Name August and 2019 Pro-Con Position on Vegetarianism Vegetarianism is often associated with its advantages including, weight loss, decreased risk for heart disease and saving lives of innocent animals. However, there is are several disadvantages, considering the harm it may cause such as, environmental issues and put person who do not eat meat at risk for health-related issues such as anemia. Supporters of vegetarianism may recommend becoming a vegetarian; however, evidence proves that this diet may cause health related issues and negatively affect the environment. 1st Counter-Argument (your oppositions’ point) Health related risk from vegetarianism is steadily progressing as
  • 2. more patrons believe that by making the choice to become vegetarians promotes their health indirectly by consuming more fruits and vegetables. According to Dittfeld, A., Gwizdek, K., Jagielski, P., Brzęk, J., & Ziora, K. experts on vegetarian diets stated, “One study has shown a case of a boy whose strict vegetarian diet led to his death as a result of cachexia.” (2017, p 62) Cachexia can be defined as muscle faintness or wasting, this can cause muscle death and overall respiratory issues. Though it is important to eat vegetables and fruits, having a well -balanced diet is even more imperative especially for children. Children’s bodies are constantly growing and need vitamins and minerals from protein to encourage their growth. Persons with inferior levels of protein, sodium, iron, manganese and phosphorus in their blood and body systems are particularly cautious when changing to a vegetarian diet. 1st Rebuttal (your point) Vegetarian diets prevent the leading cause of death in America; heart disease. Vegetarians ultimately reduce their amount of fat and cholesterol intake from meat, which may enhance their overall wellbeing and diet. As stated in the article, “Diet plays a key role in the most pervasive and deadly diseases afflicting the American population” Ballaro, B., & Sprague, N. (2016). Persons who consumer fruits and vegetables can help maintain wellbeing and prevent cancer, heart attacks and stroke. Commonly red meat and heavily saturated foods are connected to cardiac attacks while, vegetarians consume natural sugars provided by fruit and natural supplemental vitamins from vegetables. 2nd Counter-Argument Supplements with acquired proteins and minerals have been created to meet the needs of those who do not consume meat. Vegetarians enhance their diets with over the counter vitamins and minerals to compensate for what they are missing. As stated, in the article “Vegans, who reject all animal products, including milk, eggs and honey, place themselves at even greater risk for malnutrition” Issitt, M., & Carson-Dewitt, R.
  • 3. (2016). Natural recourses such as eggs and milk come from animals since the beginning of mankind. Some persons feel uncomfortable eating meat and meat product due to the condition’s animals are being treated in and the additives injected into the animal of choice. Individuals make the decision to stop eating meat or meat products ‘because of their religion. These individuals are still at risk and need supplements in the form of pills or supplemental beverages that one may consume. However, these supplements do not acquire the same nutritional value that natural resources do. Promotion of these supplements can harm employme nt opportunities for cattle farms and decrease income for meat corporations. 2nd Rebuttal Adequate intake of vital vitamins and minerals essentially comes from fruits and vegetables. Relying solely on the earth’s natural resources can positively impact the consumer’s health and contribute to enhancing technology that increases meat substitutions. By creating these technologies, employment opportunities are promoted. Technological advances help vegetarians provide themselves with the proper amount of vitamins and nutritional content that they lack from not eating meat by following what they eat and how they can compensate for the vitamins they are missing. According to Vesanto Melina, Winston Craig, Susan Levin, “These applications for mobile devices allow vegetarians to discover nutritional needs, track intake, and locate restaurants and markets where vegan foods are available” (2016, p. 1070) Promoting technology and positively impacting economics is vital when indulging vegetarians. Through closely monitori ng dietary intake of vitamins and minerals, it can cause a decrease of mental under development for children coming from a vegetarian mother. Adhering to a technologically sound nutrition can cause vegetarians to have a healthy weight and a well balance regime. 3rd Counter-Argument Through research I have concluded vegetarianism may jeopardize the stability of the ecosystem and damage the
  • 4. environment. For example, consuming large amounts of fish rather than meat can cause fisherman to overfish to meet consumer requirements. Another way vegetarianism may negatively impact the environment is the increase need to for agricultural products. Animals can become deceased during harvest season due to the increase in loss of their dietary needs and shelter. Studies have shown “about six animals per acre, or 52-77% of the animals (such as birds, mice, and rabbits) that live in agricultural crop fields, are killed during harvest.” (Vegetarianism., (2018) Agriculture influences stabilizing conservational requirements by providing housing and alimentary resources. Thus, it is evident vegetarianism may destructively impact the environment and cause damage to the ecosystem. 3rd Rebuttal Vegetarian diets often consist solely on vegetables and fruits that come from plants. Vegans often don’t eat meat as an act of morality, animals are sacrificed everyday on cattle farms to provide dietary needs to people across the globe. According to Flatley, R. M. L. S. “plant sources can meet the body’s need for protein as long as a variety of plant foods are consumed.” (2019, p.43). Often the conditions of these cattle farms are poor and cause abuse to animals. Excessive killing of animals for human needs can overall negatively impact the environment and lead to global warming. Animal cruelty is one of the leading cause of vegetarians becoming solely plant based due to the excessive killing of these animals for oral fixation. Often, it is forgotten that non-humans still have emotion and can fear, and feel pain as well. In conclusion, vegetarianism can both positively and negatively affect the environment, consumer health, and employment opportunities. Vegans have their right to make a decision to not eat meat. It is most effective when vegans have a plant based diet, that uses serval aspects of legumes, soy and other fruits and vegetable to meet nutritional requirements. However, this can cause animals who live in these areas to no longer have
  • 5. shelter or food and eventually die out. Cattle farms slaughter animals in filthy conditions and ultimately contribute to global warming. Thus, vegans do not want to eat the meat provided by these cattle farms because of the conditions the animals are held in. Likewise, technological advances for providing a well - balanced nutrition for vegans can benefit persons seeking employment by providing them with more prospects. Type 3rd Area for Improvement ADHD Drug Overdoses A terrifying reality is sweeping the youth of our nation with the abuse of the medications designed to improve their lives. A recent study has noted a significant increase in hospitalizations and overdoses related to ADHD medications. Data from 2000-2014 was analyzed by researchers from U.S. poison control centers. More than 156,000 cases during that time frame were reported related to ADHD drug exposure. Although exposures to treatments can be deadly if abused or misused these exposures decreased slightly from 2011-2014. The rate of incidents from 2000-2011 swelled nearly 72% (Mukherjee 2018 para 2). Almost half (42%) of these incidents were related to simple medication error. Although suicide attempts and medication abuse accounted for over half the exposures for teenagers 13-19 years of age. What is the cause of the increase? Some researchers theorize. “The increasing number and rate of reported ADHD medication exposures during the study period is consistent with increasing trends in ADHD diagnosis and medication prescribing. Exposures associated with suspected suicide or medication abuse and/or misuse among adolescents are of particular concern,” wrote the study authors.
  • 10. Overdoses and side effects of ADHD drugs account for hospitalizing 3,100 Americans annually, children accounting for 80% of them. The CDC reported 60% of the overdoses were accidental and if parents had kept the medications locked in child proof case they were also preventable. A CDC epidemiologist Dr. Adam L. Cohen reported the study was done to figure out "adverse events linked to the widely prescribed drugs, especially serious heart problems that have led to calls for the Food and Drug Administration to require its most serious "black-box" warnings on the stimulants (para 4)” Researchers found in most cases with children under 12 got their hands on ADHD medication such as Ritalin or Adderall, or a double-dose of their prescription was given by mistake. According to the report 18% of the incidents were made due to a teenager intentionally abusing the medications or attempting suicide. A fair amount of calls to the poison control center were made by parents worried after their child was exposed to ADHD drugs. Even though the child was not ill or actually sick. "So an exposure to a medication does not necessarily mean there's been a poisoning," said senior researcher Dr. Gary Smith. According to data from the Texas Poison Control Network, a total of 18,214 exposures to ADHD medications in patients under age 19 years old were reported from 2000 to 2017. Overall, the numbers increase in 2004 and peaked in 2011, leading to a rise of 115% from 2000 to 2011. The increase was more significant than the 7% increase from 2000-2011 seen nationally and matches the disproportionate increase in prescribing seen in Texas over this period. The most common age range affected was under 12 years old and accounted for a total of 76% of the exposures. Effects were more most commonly reported in patients age 13-19 years old. It is not a surprising finding due to toxicity being more likely to be exposures and they also align with the paradigm that exposures in this age group were most likely intentional in nature. The TPCN summarized their study as “this analysis reported trends in ADHD medication exposure in Texas and compared
  • 11. exposures to national trends. ADHD medication exposures were most commonly seen in the younger age groups, encompassing children 0-12 years, and exposures were overall more frequently accidental (p.5)” Research has documented the rampant abuse of ADHD medications in the high school and college age group. “In an attempt to improve performance in athletics and academics these medications are used, often times without a prescription. Students in this age group take ADHD medications in large amounts recreationally, students often combined these medications with other controlled substances such as alcohol, cocaine, or methamphetamine (Soloway 2011).” Rose Ann Gould Soloway, an RN, BSN, MSEd, DABAT emerita Clinical Toxicologist performed a study that found “poisonings from such combinations can cause multiple physiological effects such as high body temperature, seizures, heart attack, stroke, and death. Parents and health care providers must teach that prescription drugs for ADHD cannot be shared safely or legally. Medical consequences can be catastrophic and legal consequences can be severe, as well (para 19)”. It is obvious the parents and patients that are taking medications for ADHD need to be well informed about the consequences of abusing and overdosing on prescription medications. When prescription medication is taken with other controlled substances the physical effects can be dangerous, especially if the patients already has preexisting medical problems. Everyone from the doctors providing prescriptions the pharmacists and the parents of children taking ADHD medications need to be educated on the dangers of using any drug recreationally.

Remember to employ an objective tone by applying only 3rd person point of view (no 1st: I, me, my, we, our, us, mine) or 2nd: you, your person point of view), unless in direct quote. Then put your thesis statement here; the thesis must be one complete sentence combining your opposition’s argument and your rebuttal. 1st Counter-Argument (your oppositions’ point) Begin with a topic sentence written in your own words that presents your grounds. Next, apply the evidence/warrant. Signal phrases are highly recommended to introduce new sources (ex: According to Dr. John Smith, head physician at the Mayo Clinic…). Cite your sources in APA format via parenthetical citations. Follow through with a few sentences examining the evidence and connecting it back to your main point. If needed, apply any conciliatory language to connect to the audience and avoid putting them on the defensive. Strive 5- 10 developed sentences in a college level paragraph. ****Note: based on which outline approach you chose in Week 5 (divided or alternating) your draft will either continue with 2 other counter-arguments similar to the one above, followed by 3 rebuttal paragraphs – or it will jump straight to the 1st rebuttal as demonstrated below. 1st Rebuttal (your point) Begin with a topic sentence written in your own words that presents your grounds. Then identify the first point of contention. Discuss this point and why you disagree with it. Point out faults in the argument; explain why the point has little merit. Then argue why your ideas are superior. Then, apply the evidence/warrant. Strive for a minimum of 5 developed sentences in a college level paragraph. ….From here you will develop your remaining body paragraphs following a similar approach. In the final paper, students should have at least 6 body paragraphs: 3 counterarguments & 3 rebuttals, applying either the alternating or divided organizational approach. Then put your conclusion or final paragraph here. Reiterate your main argument. Avoid repetition or straight summarizing of earlier information. Instead, apply one of the concluding techniques from our reading or Week 3 lesson. As before, strive for a minimum of 5 developed sentences per paragraph. Then revise, edit, and proof your draft….and submit for an ‘A’! References Cite all 5 required credible sources here in APA format. List sources alphabetically.
