Scattering: it’s unpredictable diffusion of
radiation due to the Gases like nitrogen,
oxygen, water vapor, Ozone etc.
3. Type of scattering: based on the
size of particle with which EMR
interact
1.Non-selective scattering:
Occur when size of particles>> wavelength
of EMR
Example scattering by water droplets, ice
and snow crystals
4. 2.Selective scattering
Rayleigh scatter:
1. Occur in upper layers of atmosphere
2. Mainly due to the gas particles
Mie scatter:
1. Occur in lower layers of atmosphere
2. Mainly due to dust , water vapor
3. Influence the longer wavelength
5. Absorption of radiation
Occurs in specific wavelength intervals called
absorption band
Wavelengths < .3micrometer are completely
absorbed by ozone layer
Only longer wavelength radiation can penetrate
Atmospheric window : wavelength region which
can reach on target without much attenuation
