This document outlines and classifies 8 major categories of periodontal diseases: 1) plaque-induced and non-plaque induced gingival diseases, 2) chronic and aggressive periodontitis, 3) periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic diseases, 4) necrotizing periodontal diseases, 5) abscesses of the periodontium, 6) periodontitis associated with endodontic lesions, and 7) developmental or acquired deformities and conditions that predispose to plaque-induced gingival diseases. Each category contains specific types and classifications of periodontal diseases.
