Ethical Consumption of Protein
Is there a truly ethical way to consume animal proteins? Even in the age of technology there is now
way that raising animals for slaughter can really be considered ethical. It is really just a decision for
each individual whether or not they feel that they can live with the idea of consuming meat. When
you talk about animal treatments there is only one place to start, Veal. Veal is a male calf of a dairy
cow. The male calf is taken away from its mother at one day old. Then they are shipped to farms
where they are kept in dark tiny crates (PETA Dairy 5). The purpose of this procedure is to keep the
calf from using muscles, keeping the muscles soft and tender. The calves are fed a liquid diet that is
low in iron and provides little nutrition. From this treatment the calves frequently suffer from
anemia, diarrhea, and pneumonia (PETA Dairy 5). After just a few months the calves are taken to
the slaughterhouse and killed (PETA Dairy 6). If this isn't something viewed upon as unethical than
I'm not sure what is. Then there are cattle that are raised for beef. The cows that are raised for beef
are subject to branding for identification, which is preformed with a hot iron pressed into their flesh.
They also have their horns cut or burned off of them (PETA Beef 1). These cows also receive very
little veterinary care and result in death from infections or injury (PETA Beef 2). The cows are also
fed a highly unnatural diet to fatten them up, causing digestive

Persuasive Essay : Growing Up On A Farm
Beep! Beep! Beep! I rolled over and stopped my alarm that was going off at one in the morning; I
had to get up because it was time to check our cows. It was late January and all of our cows started
having their calves. Every three hours the cows need checked so everyone in my family had their
turn. Now that it was my turn, I crawled out of bed and got dressed to go out into the dark of the
night to see if we get to bring another baby calf into this world. I have grown up on a farm with
9,000 pigs, 40 cows, 6 hunting dogs, and 150 acres of alfalfa which requires work that is usually
never easy. I have been an active part of the routine care of these animals ever since I was four years
old. Living on a farm has helped me learn more about life than most could ever imagine. In Father
Boyle's "Tattoo's on the Heart" we learned how he gave the homies opportunities that most would
never get the chance to have and in order to succeed, you must have failure. Growing up on a farm
is an opportunity that most never have, it is like being an outcast. I couldn't imagine a day in the
homies shoes, and they couldn't imagine a day in mine but we at the end of the day we can all relate
to and are all thankful for getting second chances, new opportunities and learning how to forgive.
Father Boyle mentioned, "People want me to tell them success stories. I understand this. They are
the stories you want to tell, after all" (Boyle 167). Many people think that living on a farm is so fun
and easy

Soring In Horse Slaughter
Soring is a cruel practice used on horses to exaggerate their gaits. It is commonly found in gaited
horses such as the Tennessee Walking Horse. Chemicals such as mustard oil, diesel, or kerosene are
put on the legs of the horse and left there for a few days. This causes painful sores, and to avoid
detection at shows they often use a chemical stripping agent to get rid of the scarring. Then action
devices such as chains are placed on these sores to make these horses accentuate their gaits. Another
type of soring is grinding down the sole of the hoof to expose the sensitive tissues. These methods
often make the horse pick up their legs higher and faster (AVMA, 2012). One way that soring could
be stopped is if the public was made more aware

Persuasive Essay On Cattle Genetics And Breedinging
I'm sure a lot of you know very little or nothing at all about cattle genetics and breeding, or genetic
improvements. Cattle genetics is a very long process that is used to improve your herd of cattle.
Such as, what kind of offspring do you want? Do you want show steers? Or do you want cattle that
can be immediately sent off to the market?
Key actions that happen during the process of choosing your cattle. The first thing that you need to
know is what type(s) of cows you already have in your herd. Then select the bulls that you need to
have to produce the right type of semen you want for a good offspring. Do you want a bull that will
give you an offspring that has big bones or muscle? Or a bull that will give a big meaty calf that you
can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Behavior and the personality is very important in genetic show calf improvement. Determined on
the way you producer calves act, it could have a big impact on how your offspring will act. If your
producer calves act crazy and they are uncontrollable, you will more than likely have problems with
your offspring and the way it acts. A heifer or bull that acts calm and and isn't rough with people
will possibly have an offspring that will be easier to work with. However, this does not mean the
calf will come out being easy, genital, and go right into walking on a lead, of course it will take
some work, but it should be much easier for it to be taught. Rather than a calf that has producers that
are not calm. It would be a lot harder to work with, and make it into a smooth club calf.
Next are your EPD's (Expected Progeny Differences). These are the fastest way to make
improvements in cattle genetics. An EPD is the data that is collected from the economical traits of
future offspring. They are an extremely useful tool in determining your next sire for your herd. What
they do is, help determine whether a bull, cow, or heifer is enough to produce calves that are needed
to help your improvements to your

Pitchfork Ranch, By The Same Family For More Than A Century
PITCHFORK RANCH The Pitchfork Ranch is one of the most historic ranches in west Texas. The
Pitchfork Ranch has been owned by the same family for more than a century. On December 13,
1883 the Pitchfork Ranch was bought with 52,500 acres of land in west Texas. It was started with
9,750 head of cattle. It's the only ranch in west Texas that didn't have to downsize during the Great
Depression. Today the Pitchfork Ranch is spread over 162,000 acres in west Texas. It spreads over
Dickens and King Counties (Nordyke). This paper will discuss various topics about the Pitchfork
Ranch, from the history of it to how they work their horses, cattle, and everyday maintaining the
ranch. The Pitchfork Ranch has many different kinds of income. Its main income comes from cattle,
but they also have mineral rights to the land and they just recently started drilling oil. They also have
500 acres of farmland which they sale some of the crops but they mainly use it to feed the cattle
crop every year. They also have a feedlot at the ranch headquarters. The feedlot is a necessity
because they have over 5,000 head of calves every year, and it's a lot more economical to feed them
out on the ranch, instead of selling them for a lower price whenever they're younger (Ranch). The
Pitchfork has been in operation over one hundred years, and it has only been through seven ranch
managers. The current ranch manager is Bob Moorehouse, he has been the manager since 1987. "I

The Golden Calf Symbolism
A total of $270 million worth of artwork created by English artist Damien Hirst was sold at the
Sotheby's auction, 'Beautiful Inside My Head Forever', in 2008. Out of more than 200 pieces of art
being sold at the auction , The Golden Calf spotlighted the ground and caught the eyes of
participants at this record breaking sale. The Golden Calf featured a British Charolais bull preserved
in formaldehyde solution. The bull stood inside a gold–framed glass tank on top of a marble
foundation. A giant gold disk crowned the bull's head and 18 karat gold casted its hooves and horns.
The usage of symbolism is a highlight of this magnificent piece of art. The title of the work refers to
the biblical text. In Exodus episode, the Golden Calf was a piece

The Day Of An Ox Essay
"Ian," my father 's deep voice shouted out across the steppe. "I need you over here." I couldn 't run
through all the various animals we had, so I sprinted around the menagerie. Half way across, I heard
the laborious bay of an ox. It 's probably giving birth, I thought to myself. Just as I rounded the herd,
I saw my father and cousin, who was more a like another brother, besides what it looked to be an ox
giving birth. Who knew, right? As I walked over to the scene, my dad waved me over impatiently. I
moved at a faster pace, but it was a wary pace. I 'm always nervous about birth and knew that it was
a painful, yet rewarding process. "How bad is it," I asked."it is bloody?" "Of course it is, pothoc,"
my cousin, Gresh, said annoyed. Like I said, another brother. "Well, I didn 't know. They 're
sometimes not that bad," I replied oblivious to his annoyance. "Exactly, which is why you 're going
to pull this calf out," Dad said. What. He said it like it nothing new. "Excuse me, I don 't think I
heard you right. I 'm pulling that out of that," I said aghast as I pointed at the hindquarters of the ox.
"Yes, now get on your knees and get your hands in there," Dad replied. "besides, you haven 't done it
yet and your seventeen summers in now. You 'll have to do this when I 'm dead and gone, now get to
it." "So you 're saying that I have to stick my hands in its tzarreth," if I were the ox, I wouldn 't want
somebody sticking there hands were they don 't

Animal Essay : My Love Of Animals
When I was a child, I loved every animal I saw. Whether the animal was a cat, pig, or even an
elephant, I always had the same reaction; I was in awe. I convinced my parents to let me have many
different types of animals because I loved every animal I could think of, and I wanted to take care of
them. I have always loved animals with my whole heart, and until two years ago, I never thought
about how ironic my love for them was. If I loved animals so much, why did I believe it was
acceptable for me to eat them? As a child, I never thought about the food I was consuming. With
every restaurant selling meat, I never thought the system behind the food could be anything but
healthy and normal. Of course, I knew that bacon comes from pigs and steak comes from cows, but
I never wanted to think about the time in which a pig turned into bacon. Although I knew in my
mind that factory farms kill animals, I somehow convinced myself that these cows, pigs, and
chickens live on cute farms and live happy lives until they peacefully pass away. However, one day I
became curious about what is truly happening on these "cute farms." To say the absolute least, I was
horrified by the truth behind the food I was eating. I learned that these animals are treated as if they
are not living creatures who can feel pain and emotion. Factory farmers put them into spaces they
can barely move around in, fed food that gives them little or no nutrition, and most factory–farmed
animals are injected

RE: Old Mule Farms The Old Mule Farms is a cow–calf operation that provides calves for feedlots
to fatten up before being sent to packing houses and eventually sold as meet for consumers. The
current owners have been experiencing a problem with losses in revenue. The expenses that Old
Mule Farms incurred are veterinary bills, labor, nutritional supplements and minerals, and a variety
of forage. The forage is primarily grazed grasses but is supplemented with hay.
The owners of the farm have found a correlation between the weight of a cow, and the cost of
feeding it, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking into consideration that the weight of the cows is a key driver of calf weight, which in turn is
the key driver of revenue.
An Old Mule Farms average cow weight ranges between 1000 lbs. and 1400 lbs. My
recommendation is that if they were to eliminate the lighter and heavier 40% of cows respectively,
Old Mill Farms would have heavier calves to sell, resulting in higher revenues. This would also
reduce expenses each of the heavier cows has been causing. This recommended approach will
substantially reduce the expenses incurred by heavier cows, and increase the calf sell weight
produced by the lighter cows. The best approach to measuring the proper size of a cow is to use the
primary key driver of cow weight and compare the value of a calf to the cost of maintaining a cow.
The principle of diminishing marginal productivity states that as one input in the production process
is increased, there will be a point in which the addition of an input will result in smaller and smaller
benefit. We can relate this principle with the weight of cows. As more nutrients, minerals, and forage
is added to a cow the more a cow weighs. This in turn results in heavier calves. However, when a
cow begins to weigh over 1200 lbs. the weight of calves diminishes. When taking in to account the
principle of diminishing marginal utility, Old Mill Farms would be able to eliminate their losses by
restricting their cow weight to 1200

Rabbits are the chosen test subject because they have very poor tear ducts so they cannot wash the
substance away. Next is the skin irritancy test which involves shaving the fur off animals and
applying the test substance to their skin. The skin is observed for signs of irritation. The third test is
toxicity tests. In this test, substances are fed to the animal, and they are observed for signs of
poisoning. The test may last several days causing the animals to tolerate extreme suffering. The
animals that actually survive the test are killed at the end for autopsy. Many people believe that
animals are necessary for testing. However, with the highly advanced technology we have available
today, there are several other options. First of all, there is no reason why manufactured need to use
any new substances because there are over 8,000 ingredients which have already been established as
safe. The law requires new ingredients to be safety tested before they are introduced to the public.
Animals may be the easy answer, but they do not need to be the only answer. Several alternatives
include testing on reconstructed human skin, using computer modeling, and enlisting human
volunteers. Besides, human volunteers are often more reliable to test products for human use rather
than using a different species with a different biology. Animals in the agriculture industry are subject
to an entire life of mistreatment, should their lives even last

This experiment will be conducted using fifty Angus calves born within 2 weeks of the same date.
To insure the calves are born within this time frame the calves will be collected from cows that have
been inseminated from the same bull at the same time and tested positive for pregnancy. These
calves will be castrated with the Short scrotum method with the use of a rubber ring. This method
involves restraining the calf, preferably in a squeeze chute, and taking a tool to expand the tight
rubber band and placing both testicles through the band. While doing this the band must be firmly
against the naval at the base of the scrotum before releasing the rubber band. Twenty–five of the
calves will be castrated at a week old. The other twenty–five will be castrated at the age of ... Show

The calves after weening will be started on the same nutrition plan. The calves will start out on a
diet of fifty percent orchard grass hay and fifty percent alfalfa hay at three percent of the calves'
body weight per day. The alfalfa will provide the amount of protein needed that the calves needed in
early growth. The orchard grass will help prevent bloat from an all alfalfa diet and provide essential
nutrition as well. This will last for the next three days. After the first three days grain (12% sweet
feed) will be introduce at two pounds a day along with the same amount of hay for another three
days. After this period every three days another pound of grain will be added until the calf is eating
6 to 8 pounds of grain per day. This should amount to a 50/50 mixture of grain and hay. The calves
will be weighed weekly to adjust the amount of hay given to maintain the 3% body weight of hay.
Once the calves have adjusted to a grain diet the ration will be changed at a 10% increase in grain
every 7 days until an 80/20 ratio of grain to hay. Along with this diet the calves will be given
sufficient amounts of fresh

My Last High School Rodeo Essay examples
I took a deep breath as I walked my horse into the Greeley Stampede Arena. I told myself just to
"relax." I loped a circle around the arena to make sure that my horse was warmed up and ready to
go. He was ready but I was starting to get nervous. I stopped in front of the roping box to put my
piggin' string in my mouth. I looked at my calf in the chute to make sure that it was number 33,
which was one of the best calves out of the whole set. It was, and I was ready to ride into the box
and rope my calf, or attempt to rope my calf. I began to get more nervous, more nervous than I ever
had been at a rodeo.
The reason for my nervousness was because it was the last rodeo of the High School Rodeo season.
The last rodeo just so happened to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Part of the reason that I had this confidence was because of my new calf roping horse that I had
bought. His name was Loopy. He was sixteen years old and had been to far more rodeos than I had.
So needless to say he was experienced and very dependable. This was a change from my 2000
season where I was learning to rope calves and so was my horse. This year I could concentrate more
on myself and I didn't have to worry about my horse.
The only time that he didn't work was at the first day of the State Finals Rodeo. I didn't blame him
because I didn't want to work either. It had rained all night and part of that morning so the arena was
about three feet deep with mud. I managed to rope my calf and tie him in a time of 13.3 seconds,
although Loopy didn't work very well. This time gave me a sixth place finish and added five more
points to my total. What was even more amazing is that I managed to get off of my horse without
falling on my face, which happens a lot in the mud because your feet will stick. The next day of the
Finals the arena was in good shape but I drew a bad calf and ended up placing tenth earning only
one point. However, that point was very significant because it moved me from sixteenth place up to
fifteenth place in the state. This meant that I qualified as one of the top fifteen and would come back
to the short round the next day. I was excited that I had made it to the short round because the year

Leg Pain in a 22 Year Old Female Soccer Player
A 22–year old female soccer player has had a 3–month history of deep aching pain in the antero–
lateral right leg and on some occasions, bilaterally (1). The pain occurs within 15 to 20 minutes of
her training regime or upon commencing a run. She reported symptoms of tightness in her anterior
leg, and weakness of ankle dorsi–flexors (1). She described that symptoms worsened as the exercise
duration was prolonged. When activity ceased, symptoms were alleviated, though pain would return
if she re–engaged in the activity. Upon attempting to continue training, she developed numbness in
the foot. On examination, mild tenderness was noted on palpation of the antero–lateral compartment
(1).
This case study presents an individual who is experiencing frequent leg pain upon participation in
physical activity. Leg pain is a common condition experienced by competitive and recreational
athletes. However, the diagnosis of leg pain can be difficult as there are numerous possible
underlying contributors. A thorough comprehension of human anatomy and biomechanics is
essential for a proper understanding (2). Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome is one of the
most common conditions experienced by athletes (1,2). Of a group of 150 athletes who reported
exercise– induced pain, 33 % were diagnosed with chronic exertional compartment syndrome
(CECS) (2). Although mostly athletes experience CECS, it is still prevalent amongst non–athletes

The Animal Of Entertainment Should Be Considered Animal...
In the last decade, society has erupted in controversy over aquariums and it has driven both
aquarium workers and consumers to speak up on the issue of the cruelty that animals placed in these
situations have faced. Individuals have gone to aquariums as a form of entertainment for decades
and they have become a part of American culture. "On average, one aquarium has opened each year
for the past 12 years, a 50 percent increase over the 25 'accredited' aquariums that existed prior to
1990" (Savoye). Aquariums such as SeaWorld, which welcomes millions of people each year,

Killer whales such as Tilikum are intelligent, social animals that need a large space to thrive.
However, in aquariums and theme parks like SeaWorld, these marine animals are forced to live in
small, unnatural spaces that cause them distress. (See Figure 1). As a result, their personalities and
temperaments will change and it can have deadly consequences. When discussing Tilikum, John
Jett, a scientist and former SeaWorld trainer says, "There's no place to swim and not much to do. His
teeth cause infections. He 's sunburned. He 's bullied. Given his boring life and ill health, it comes as
no surprise that he killed" (Tocco). While SeaWorld workers may claim that the whales that are put
into captivity are not subjected to harm and are given plenty of room to roam, there is no
justification behind forcing these animals to live in solitude. For such intelligent and social
creatures, living this way goes against their very nature.
Additionally, aquariums have adopted many disturbing practices that include tearing calves away
from their mothers and transferring them to different theme parks. In the wild, orcas tend to live in
pods, which can have up to 30 whales, that will travel together for their entire lives. The experience
of having it's calf taken away is extremely traumatic for both the mother and the calf, given that in
the wild the calf rarely leaves its mother's side. A former diver named Crowe told Cowperthwaite
that he "kidnapped baby whales for shipment to

The Farm Tour At La Luna Dairy Farm
On October 5th, 2017, the class went on a farm tour at La Luna Dairy Farm. This was my first time
being on a dairy farm and learning about the production of milk as I have never experienced
anything like this. On the way to the farm, Courtney was driving and I was the navigator and at
times we thought that we were lost because we were in the middle of nowhere. After missing one of
the turns and looping back, we finally made it to the farm where the class was meeting. As soon as I
open the door, the smell of manure assured me that I was in the right place. I could not get use to
smell, however, at times I would be distracted that the smell was not bothersome to me anymore.
The farm owner, Jon Slutsky, and one of his employ greeted the class and gave us a brief overview
of the farm. Jon explained that when he started the business in the 1980s, they have around 60 cows,
but today they have about 1,400 cows that they milked. The breed of cows that Jon have at the farm
is called Holstein and that his calves are born on the farm with artificial insemination. There is about
28 employees that works with Jon o take care of his cows. Eleven of the workers are in charge of
milking the cows and the rest of the workers are working to take care of the cows. A cow is milked
three times a day and it produces about 10 gallons of milk a day. When Jon realized that some of the
questions asked was going to be answered during the tour and that everyone was there, he said that

Compare And Contrast Distance Running And Cycling
Distance running and cycling first began and were introduced as sports, in the 1800's when the first
Olympic Games took place. Since then, these sports have become increasingly well–known around
the world and in society. Distance running, and road racing cycling have many different components
including the types of equipment's used, muscles worked, VO2 max levels, the weather each sport
can occur in, etc. Although these two sports are quite different, they are both well known and loved
by the many individuals who take part in a healthy sporting lifestyle. By analyzing the nutritional
requirements, common injuries, and legal and/or illegal performance enhancing drugs, many
differences and similarities can be discovered and revealed regarding these two sport activities.
Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life.
Choosing better decisions with your nutrition and hydration can result in improved performance,
injury prevention and recovery. Both professional road racing cyclists and marathon runners follow
specific diets to obtain their careers as athletes, so they can continue to do what they love. Cycling
and running are both considered endurance sports that require similar nutritional requirements when
training, during, and after the activity. Carbohydrates play a significant role in these two sports as
they provide energy for the central nervous system and help maintain essential glycogen stores

The Day Of The Barn
An Appreciation
One cold January morning while my dad, brother, Wyatt, and I were completing the daily barn work,
I noticed that my heifer was in her early stages of labor. She was making low mooing sounds and
trying to push out her calf. We penned her up in the labor pens so she could be by herself and came
back out to check on her throughout the day. By the time nine o'clock rolled around, we still didn't
see any signs of a calf. My dad and I were worried because she had never had a calf before and we
didn't know if she would have it on her own or if we would have to assist her and pull it. The
temperature was below zero which meant if we didn't get the calf warmed up and dried off once it
was born, there was a very high chance it would freeze to death. We decided it would be best to sit
in the barn all night and watch her to make sure she was going to be okay. My dad and I sat on a
couple square bales placed right beside the calving pen telling stories and just talking to each other
so we didn't fall asleep. My mom and brother would bring us hot chocolate to keep us warm and
stay for a while to keep us company.
My father, Alan Snyder, is the most hard working, dedicated person I know. He is the man that

Baby Calves
For many centuries farmers and ranchers have taught us how to care for calves that were just born.
There wasn't much to the process except for tagging the calf and writing down the records for it.
Scours was really common for all babies to have within three to four days of being born. Scours is a
form a diarrhea for cattle, and it can make them very sick and sometimes die. When calving out in
the spring you never know what the weather conditions will be, and pneumonia is very common for
the calves to catch. Scientist have been working hard for many years to figure out a solution of
decreasing scours and pneumonia, and with the two new medications the chances have decreased
tremendously. Pneumonia was a common sickness for all calves to get ... Show more content on

(2008), "there are some powerful obstacles that prevent our Sunday responses from becoming our
Monday reality. Some of these are work environment obstacles, others are internal to us, but each
obstacle relegates God's workplace priorities to the back seat". After reading this study, there are
many factors that come to mind while trying to maintain my faith in the workplace on a consistent

remember that having my job is a gift from God. Often I deal with many obstacles and tough tasks

Your Personal Golden Calf
Introduction.
"What are you doing at work, that really matters?" That is the most challenging question anyone, in
my opinion has a hard time to answer. We all work to make a living, and pay the bills. We forget to
find the true purpose in the work that we do in the workplace, from nine to five. Matthew 5:12 states
"now when he saw the crowds, he went up on the mountainside and sat down and he began to teach
them". We as Christians should follow in those same steps, by first finding out what really matters at
our place of work, and applying that to what really matters the most.
The vision, goals, and results have to authentically, organically, spiritually, and consistently coincide
with my faith in the workplace. "You see, to those who follow Jesus, what matters most in our work
life is seldom what matters most to everyone else" (Zigarelli, 2008). Therefore, I am fully
committed to achieving my goals and pursuing them faithfully. I want to achieve my greatest
challenges and obstacles, while remaining an ambassador of Jesus Christ, especially in my
workplace. I want to accomplish a comfortable balance of incorporating my Christian ... Show more

On the other hand, there are idols that come to mind, throughout my reading of the chapter "Your
Personal Golden Calf". As stated in the chapter, some of those idols "may be money, reputation,
power, being well–liked, doing the minimum to remain employed, or a number of other things"
(Zigarelli, 2008). Personally, my idols are building a brand, reputation, and setting an example my
niece and nephew can admire in the future. I do not disproportionately focus on when I will get a
promotion or when my next promotion will be. I focus on the work I am doing, and what type of
impact I can make within my community. I give my all and work well above my best potential in all
tasks I am assigned. I do not try to fit in and follow the crowd; instead I like to start my own

Short Story Of Chirp : A Short Stories
Chirp, chirp" The birds sang in the forest's long and outstretched arms. I woke up to the still quiet
morning. The Arizona air was crisp and filled with the sweet smell of waffles. I jumped out of the
hay loft and ran out of the barn door. I got to the house and threw open the old squeaky door. My Pa
was planing on getting a door ordered, but we lived so far away from the nearest settlement that they
wouldn't deliver it and it was too far to travel. "Morning' sweetheart, ya hungry?" Ma said. "Just a
little, smells good!" I said, as I pulled out a chair from our old oak table that my ma got for her
anniversary 13 years ago. These waffles were only given to me 3 times at the very most every six
months, because it was a three day long journey just to get the ingredients.Ma set down the stack of
waffles and went through the squeaky old door. Outside she retrieved some wood from our wood

scary creatures lurk around for their prey, and at night the claws of the tree crash into your window

The Fallibility of Man Exposed in The Bible Essay
The Fallibility of Man Exposed in The Bible
The story of the Golden Calf illustrates the inherent fallibility of man. It starts out when the people
ask Aaron to "make us gods, which shall go before us." Despite the fact that God had spoken to
them just days earlier commanding them not to make themselves any graven images, Aaron doesn't
argue too strongly against this, immediately asking them to turn over any gold jewelry they have so
that he may make them a figure of worship. This choice of material symbolizes man's covetous
nature, perhaps also implying that Aaron feared to go against God's wishes directly, and so he chose
gold in the hope that the people would be loathe to part with it. However, they ... Show more content

He says that the Egyptians would mock the Israelites, laughing that their God would lead them out
of their servitude only to face destruction at his own hands. Rather than respecting his power, they
would see that he was either unable or unwilling to complete the salvation he set his people upon.
And so the Lord agres to set aside his anger at the people, while Moses returns to them with God's
commandments.
Before he even reaches the base of the mountain, Joshua states that there is "a noise of war inside
the camp," to which Moses responds that he doesn't hear cries of victory or defeat, but rather those
of revelry. This seems to put a shadow of foreboding over the story, implying that soon there will
still be cries, but of a different nature. When Moses sees the golden icon that the people now
worship, the story states that his "anger waxed hot," in the same words that God's displeasure was
described, showing that Moses' anger was just, because it was at wickedness, and in the name of the
Lord. The story climaxes when he burns the icon into dust. By reducing their figure to the smallest
particles possible, Moses shows the idolaters that an idol is like to nothing, since dust is as close to
nothing as he could make it. He has the people drink the dust as a gesture that their sin will always
be with them, ingrained into their bodies. When he asks

Essay on Personal Narrative- Moose Hunt
Personal Narrative– Moose Hunt
It was the middle of October, and it was finally time for my long awaited moose hunt. I have waited
ever since I was a little girl for this opportunity, and it was finally here. So, my father and I packed
up our stuff and left the warmth of Phoenix. We were leaving the "Valley of the Sun" and headed for
a place called Wyoming. After two days and fourteen long hours of driving, we made it to our
hunting unit.
The mountains were tall (11,000 feet +) and covered with bright powdery snow. It was like nothing I
had ever seen before. I was eager to set–up camp and prepare for our nine day hunt. But, Dad said
that we had to drive around and check out all the good places, just to make sure that we were in ...

Unfortunately, it went nothing like that. First, it was so cold that our alarm did not work. I would
never have guessed that I could get ready for a hunt in 15 minutes! Of course, that did not leave time
for breakfast, or even coffee for Dad. We still made it to our spot by daybreak. We parked behind
some trees about a half mile from our last moose sighting and started stalking closer. We were
nearly to the Moose spot when we heard another vehicle coming down the trail behind us. We
thought for sure that no one would be so un–sportsman–like that they would just drive by us and
start shooting. It had to be obvious that we were stalking that Moose. But just in case, we hurried it
up and ran down the trail. As we turned the corner, we saw the pickup stopped in the middle of the
trail and the hunters were below the road glassing and talking loudly. And right across the gulch in
front of them was my moose with the cow and calf.
Things were just going great! I thought for sure that they were going to shoot my Moose. But my
dad wasn't going to let that happen. We ran right by the truck and set–up in the nearest spot we could
see the Moose. It was a pretty bad position and I was basically laying backward in the middle of a
bush trying to get steady. The other hunters were kneeling down and looking through their scopes.
My dad could not believe his eyes and all he said was "shoot, and make sure you get

CASE OF SHERWOOD V. WALKER The "cow case" became a very famous case in 1887, and for
generations after that, law students have study this particular case. Part of the appeal of this case is
the simplicity of it and country settings, which is two farmers bargaining about the price of a cow.
One of the parties involved in this case was Hiram Walker. He was a business man in the
nineteenth–century, who made his fortune in distilling. Mr. Walker purchased a farm in Wayne
County and took up the avocation of gentleman farmer and breeder of fine cattle. Theodore

chains, handles, gloves, and lubricant. Place the towels where they are easily accessible once the
calf is born. Make sure all equipment is clean. Put on obstetrical gloves and lubricant, if desired.
Then, feel inside the cow's birth canal. Make sure the calf's feet, legs, and head are correctly aligned.
Legs, feet, and head should be straight ahead, or in a "superman" position. Grab your OB chains.
Loop the chains and place the loop above the fetlock (just above the "ankle") on each foot. Then,
make a half–hitch and loop it just under the dewclaw. Examine loops to make sure they are secured
to the foot so they won't fall off during the pull. When the chains are securely in place, hook the
obstetrical chain handles on each chain. Keep one handle a few inches farther away from the foot
than the other––this is to help the shoulders pass through the birth canal easier. Once handles are
placed, begin pulling the calf. Pull with even, constant pressure. When the cow pushes or strains pull
harder with her. Once the head and shoulders are out, turn the calf one quarter of a turn as you pull.
This will help his hips pass through the birth canal. Once the calf is fully out of the mother , move

German Expressionism : Dance Around The Golden Calf
The 20th century is when German Expressionism started. Some of the artist decided to show their
feelings while using bright colors to create their ideas. Some of the artist accomplished aim through
distortion, exaggeration and sometimes fantasy as well as expressing anxiety and frustration in there
paintings. I also previously read that some of the expressionist who were artist had died fighting in
two of the World Wars and some of the them had successfully made it through. Roots of the German
Expressionist School lay in works of some of the artist like Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch
each who evolved a personal painting style. Expressionist were influenced by predecessors in 1890s
and also interested in some of the African wood carvings as well as some Northern European
medieval. This term "expressionism" meant "modern art".

That is because when they get hurt, they are not properly cared for and a lot of them will die since
the cuts will get infected. The harming of innocent animals isn't the only thing wrong with the dairy

Results: The p–value of 0.00203 is p<0.05 thus we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that
there is a significant difference between the two means. A big part that contributes to this result
(significant differences) is that males on average tend to have more muscle mass than females ...

Maybe calves do play a roll but one that causes a relationship between the two. Other factors could
have affected the overall results could be that the jumping was not standardized, lack of a bigger
sample size, and the fact that when measuring the jump height it had to be predicted where the
person's hand reached, thus leading to huge assumptions on the measuring part.
Comparison of calf circumference and jump height in females
Figure 3: Comparison of avg. calf circumference and jump height (both in CM) in females (n=10). A
R2 value of 0.0426 (0.042592 in EXCEL) indicates a weak relationship between calf circumference
and jump height.
Results: Obtaining a R2 value of 0.042592 means there is no relationship between calf
circumference and jump height. One cannot determine the jump height by having the calf
circumference. Similarly with the calf circumference and jump height in males, physiologically, it
would make more sense for the hamstrings and quads to play a bigger role in jumping height as they
are bigger muscles and generate most of the force to jump. Even if calf circumference did have a
role it might be insignificant. Additionally, there could have been other factors that contribute to the
end results: everyone not jumping with the same intent (max effort versus minimal effort), possible
injuries, or soreness. Another source that could have contributed to end results for being what they
are is the lack of a big sample size. Additionally, measuring the

The Dairy Farmer, The Perception That The Public Has...
Introduction For the modern dairy farmer, the perception that the public has regarding the industry
has a significant impact on their overall wellbeing as a company. However, most people in modern
society have little personal experience with farming, and their opinions are often based on second–
hand information (Boogaard et al. 2010). In general people are more concerned with the welfare of
the animals and want them to be able to display natural behaviours like grazing on pasture for most
of the day (Cardoso et al. 2016). This however, can prove very problematic for dairy producers as it
results in lower control over feed intake and body condition score of the cows. Body Condition
Score (BCS) is a management tool used to assess body fat stores in dairy cows (Ferguson et al.
1994). It has been correlated with overall reproduction, health and productivity of dairy cows at it is
considered one of the most practical methods of assessing changes in energy stores (Berry et al.
2007; Bewley et al. 2008). However, due to its subjectivity and time consumption it is not a widely
used management tool in the industry. There are many studies that try to use technology as a way of
making an automatic system for BCS. This paper aims to identify the perspectives on the BCS from
the public and the producer, benefits of using an automated BCS and current technologies available.

ECV Turning up the Heat in the North East
The profitability of a beef suckler herd is directly related to the number of calves reared per cow
annually. Commercial suckler herds should aim for a tighter calving period with cows producing a
viable calf every 365 days.
The average calving period for lowland suckler herd is 21 weeks, compared to the 12 week target
and reducing the calving period from 21 weeks to 12 weeks can increase revenue from extra
weaning weight by more than £2000 for a 50 cow herd.
Tighter calving periods will increase profitability. If the weaning date on the farm stays constant
then a calf born in the first 3 weeks of calving will on average have a weaning age of 230 days
weighing 309kg. A calf born in the 18th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This data is then collected, interpreted and analysed to deliver an accurate indication of breeding
potential. This data can also be used to give health and nutritional insights for the farmer in a user–
friendly format.
SCR Heatime works by monitoring the cow's activity with a unique motion–sensor tag which
records cow activity in 2 hour blocks, providing detailed data on the cow's activity levels and their
intensity.
The data is collected each time the cow passes under the ID unit, the data is transferred from the tag
to the Heatime control box using infra–red communication. This allows the base unit to be sited
close to water troughs and other well–used routes so the animal's activity data will be picked up
regularly.
The activity data is analysed by the system and separates the cow's day to day activity from oestrus
related activities. The screen shows obvious peaks when the cow is in heat and indicates the
optimum time for inseminating the cow.
In addition, SCR Heatime will highlight cows with low activity levels which can act as an early
indication that an animal requires attention. The home screen will flash up as a 'health alert' giving
the farmer early warning to possible ailments in the cow. The system also detects non–cycling cows,
allowing them to be investigated so that less fertile cows can be removed from the herd, thereby
decreasing costs.

The Two Breed Crossbreeding System
b) Three breed cross: In this system of crossbreeding three breeds are used. The bulls of three breeds
are used in rotation in successive generations of crossbred females of the previous generation
(37,55). This is thus called the rotational crossing. This system is practiced to maintain
heterozygosity and to utilize heterosis for maternal ability of the crossbred dams (55). Three breed
cross requires the input of three separate breeds (55). Along similar principles as with backcross, all
first cross male progeny are sold. First cross females are joined with bulls of a third unrelated breed,
instead of with one of the parent breeds as in the backcross. All progeny of F1 dams are sold for
slaughter (55). This system takes advantage of both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This system is an excellent choice as it produces maximum heterosis in both the calf and cow (51).
As such, calves obtain the additional growth benefits of hybrid vigor while heterosis in the cows
improves their maternal ability. The terminal cross system is one of the simplest systems to
implement and achieves the highest use of heterosis and breed complementarities (17,44). All calves
marketed will have the same breed composition. A 24% increase in pounds of calf weaned per cow
exposed is expected from this system when compared to the average of the parent breeds.
3) BREEDING FOR COMPOSITE –
Development of a composite or synthetic breed results from the crossing of two or more existing
breeds (43). There are many examples of this in Queensland: Santa Gertrudis, Drought master,
Braford, Charbray, Brangus and Belmont Red. The primary advantage of forming composite breeds
is that after the initial crosses are made, management requirements are the same as for straight
breeding. McDowell

Merrimack Tractor Case Summary
1. What is the appropriate cow size for the herd using the 50% weaning rule? According to the
information provided, the most appropriate cow size for the herd using the 50% weaning rule would
be 1,100 pounds. Although any cow size would ultimately result in a loss for the farm at this point,
the cows at 1,100 pounds have a smaller financial burden than heavier cows. The 50% "rule" is not
very specific, as the case only specifies [calf weight] "...close to 50% of [the mother's] mature
weight", so it can be assumed that the 55.5% (585 pounds) is sufficient, which yields a marginal
revenue of $28.08. To a much lesser extent, around 1,200 pounds could also be less burdensome for
the farm than 1,300 or 1,400 pounds, but 1,200 is on the brink of barely breaking even at a marginal
revenue of $6.48. Once the weight exceeds the 1,200 increment, the marginal revenue dips ... Show

What are the drivers in a cow–calf operation? Is the revenue–expense calculation (see Exhibit 2)
clear regarding drivers? Why or why not? While there are several drivers in a cow–calf operation,
the accountant in the case specifies the driver for expenses as the number of cows –– due to the
information provided about the cattle–calf industry, I believe he is incorrect in this particular case.
Because many variables are dependent upon the weight of a cow and not simply the number of
cows, it would be much more useful and relevant if it were shifted from per cow calculations to per
pound. The revenue–expense calculation in Exhibit 2 of our case may be seen as a bit unclear,
because its calculations are per animal, despite the revenue and expense being highly dependent
upon the weight. Although the cow–focus could be very useful, it could also be confusing because
of the variation of weights and, consequently, their sale prices. I would personally prefer the
identification of fixed costs and variable costs in the calculation's construction as well, but
calculations based on weight would be

our six–hour trek I rode for the first time with little to no pain and continued to hope the worst had
ended. We made it to Kentucky and, with my arm finally free of the sling, pulled out a qualifying
score to allow me acceptance into the Festival of

Ethical Consumption Of Protein

  • 1. Ethical Consumption of Protein Is there a truly ethical way to consume animal proteins? Even in the age of technology there is now way that raising animals for slaughter can really be considered ethical. It is really just a decision for each individual whether or not they feel that they can live with the idea of consuming meat. When you talk about animal treatments there is only one place to start, Veal. Veal is a male calf of a dairy cow. The male calf is taken away from its mother at one day old. Then they are shipped to farms where they are kept in dark tiny crates (PETA Dairy 5). The purpose of this procedure is to keep the calf from using muscles, keeping the muscles soft and tender. The calves are fed a liquid diet that is low in iron and provides little nutrition. From this treatment the calves frequently suffer from anemia, diarrhea, and pneumonia (PETA Dairy 5). After just a few months the calves are taken to the slaughterhouse and killed (PETA Dairy 6). If this isn't something viewed upon as unethical than I'm not sure what is. Then there are cattle that are raised for beef. The cows that are raised for beef are subject to branding for identification, which is preformed with a hot iron pressed into their flesh. They also have their horns cut or burned off of them (PETA Beef 1). These cows also receive very little veterinary care and result in death from infections or injury (PETA Beef 2). The cows are also fed a highly unnatural diet to fatten them up, causing digestive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Persuasive Essay : Growing Up On A Farm Beep! Beep! Beep! I rolled over and stopped my alarm that was going off at one in the morning; I had to get up because it was time to check our cows. It was late January and all of our cows started having their calves. Every three hours the cows need checked so everyone in my family had their turn. Now that it was my turn, I crawled out of bed and got dressed to go out into the dark of the night to see if we get to bring another baby calf into this world. I have grown up on a farm with 9,000 pigs, 40 cows, 6 hunting dogs, and 150 acres of alfalfa which requires work that is usually never easy. I have been an active part of the routine care of these animals ever since I was four years old. Living on a farm has helped me learn more about life than most could ever imagine. In Father Boyle's "Tattoo's on the Heart" we learned how he gave the homies opportunities that most would never get the chance to have and in order to succeed, you must have failure. Growing up on a farm is an opportunity that most never have, it is like being an outcast. I couldn't imagine a day in the homies shoes, and they couldn't imagine a day in mine but we at the end of the day we can all relate to and are all thankful for getting second chances, new opportunities and learning how to forgive. Father Boyle mentioned, "People want me to tell them success stories. I understand this. They are the stories you want to tell, after all" (Boyle 167). Many people think that living on a farm is so fun and easy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Soring In Horse Slaughter Soring is a cruel practice used on horses to exaggerate their gaits. It is commonly found in gaited horses such as the Tennessee Walking Horse. Chemicals such as mustard oil, diesel, or kerosene are put on the legs of the horse and left there for a few days. This causes painful sores, and to avoid detection at shows they often use a chemical stripping agent to get rid of the scarring. Then action devices such as chains are placed on these sores to make these horses accentuate their gaits. Another type of soring is grinding down the sole of the hoof to expose the sensitive tissues. These methods often make the horse pick up their legs higher and faster (AVMA, 2012). One way that soring could be stopped is if the public was made more aware ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Persuasive Essay On Cattle Genetics And Breedinging I'm sure a lot of you know very little or nothing at all about cattle genetics and breeding, or genetic improvements. Cattle genetics is a very long process that is used to improve your herd of cattle. Such as, what kind of offspring do you want? Do you want show steers? Or do you want cattle that can be immediately sent off to the market? Key actions that happen during the process of choosing your cattle. The first thing that you need to know is what type(s) of cows you already have in your herd. Then select the bulls that you need to have to produce the right type of semen you want for a good offspring. Do you want a bull that will give you an offspring that has big bones or muscle? Or a bull that will give a big meaty calf that you can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Behavior and the personality is very important in genetic show calf improvement. Determined on the way you producer calves act, it could have a big impact on how your offspring will act. If your producer calves act crazy and they are uncontrollable, you will more than likely have problems with your offspring and the way it acts. A heifer or bull that acts calm and and isn't rough with people will possibly have an offspring that will be easier to work with. However, this does not mean the calf will come out being easy, genital, and go right into walking on a lead, of course it will take some work, but it should be much easier for it to be taught. Rather than a calf that has producers that are not calm. It would be a lot harder to work with, and make it into a smooth club calf. Next are your EPD's (Expected Progeny Differences). These are the fastest way to make improvements in cattle genetics. An EPD is the data that is collected from the economical traits of future offspring. They are an extremely useful tool in determining your next sire for your herd. What they do is, help determine whether a bull, cow, or heifer is enough to produce calves that are needed to help your improvements to your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Pitchfork Ranch, By The Same Family For More Than A Century PITCHFORK RANCH The Pitchfork Ranch is one of the most historic ranches in west Texas. The Pitchfork Ranch has been owned by the same family for more than a century. On December 13, 1883 the Pitchfork Ranch was bought with 52,500 acres of land in west Texas. It was started with 9,750 head of cattle. It's the only ranch in west Texas that didn't have to downsize during the Great Depression. Today the Pitchfork Ranch is spread over 162,000 acres in west Texas. It spreads over Dickens and King Counties (Nordyke). This paper will discuss various topics about the Pitchfork Ranch, from the history of it to how they work their horses, cattle, and everyday maintaining the ranch. The Pitchfork Ranch has many different kinds of income. Its main income comes from cattle, but they also have mineral rights to the land and they just recently started drilling oil. They also have 500 acres of farmland which they sale some of the crops but they mainly use it to feed the cattle crop every year. They also have a feedlot at the ranch headquarters. The feedlot is a necessity because they have over 5,000 head of calves every year, and it's a lot more economical to feed them out on the ranch, instead of selling them for a lower price whenever they're younger (Ranch). The Pitchfork has been in operation over one hundred years, and it has only been through seven ranch managers. The current ranch manager is Bob Moorehouse, he has been the manager since 1987. • 21. The Golden Calf Symbolism A total of $270 million worth of artwork created by English artist Damien Hirst was sold at the Sotheby's auction, 'Beautiful Inside My Head Forever', in 2008. Out of more than 200 pieces of art being sold at the auction , The Golden Calf spotlighted the ground and caught the eyes of participants at this record breaking sale. The Golden Calf featured a British Charolais bull preserved in formaldehyde solution. The bull stood inside a gold–framed glass tank on top of a marble foundation. A giant gold disk crowned the bull's head and 18 karat gold casted its hooves and horns. The usage of symbolism is a highlight of this magnificent piece of art. • 25. The Day Of An Ox Essay "Ian," my father 's deep voice shouted out across the steppe. "I need you over here." I couldn 't run through all the various animals we had, so I sprinted around the menagerie. Half way across, I heard the laborious bay of an ox. It 's probably giving birth, I thought to myself. Just as I rounded the herd, I saw my father and cousin, who was more a like another brother, besides what it looked to be an ox giving birth. Who knew, right? As I walked over to the scene, my dad waved me over impatiently. I moved at a faster pace, but it was a wary pace. I 'm always nervous about birth and knew that it was a painful, yet rewarding process. "How bad is it," I asked."it is bloody?" "Of course it is, pothoc," my cousin, Gresh, said annoyed. Like I said, another brother. "Well, I didn 't know. They 're sometimes not that bad," I replied oblivious to his annoyance. "Exactly, which is why you 're going to pull this calf out," Dad said. What. He said it like it nothing new. "Excuse me, I don 't think I heard you right. I 'm pulling that out of that," I said aghast as I pointed at the hindquarters of the ox. "Yes, now get on your knees and get your hands in there," Dad replied. "besides, you haven 't done it yet and your seventeen summers in now. You 'll have to do this when I 'm dead and gone, now get to it." "So you 're saying that I have to stick my hands in its tzarreth," if I were the ox, I wouldn 't want somebody sticking there hands were they don 't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Animal Essay : My Love Of Animals When I was a child, I loved every animal I saw. Whether the animal was a cat, pig, or even an elephant, I always had the same reaction; I was in awe. I convinced my parents to let me have many different types of animals because I loved every animal I could think of, and I wanted to take care of them. I have always loved animals with my whole heart, and until two years ago, I never thought about how ironic my love for them was. If I loved animals so much, why did I believe it was acceptable for me to eat them? As a child, I never thought about the food I was consuming. With every restaurant selling meat, I never thought the system behind the food could be anything but healthy and normal. Of course, I knew that bacon comes from pigs and steak comes from cows, but I never wanted to think about the time in which a pig turned into bacon. Although I knew in my mind that factory farms kill animals, I somehow convinced myself that these cows, pigs, and chickens live on cute farms and live happy lives until they peacefully pass away. However, one day I became curious about what is truly happening on these "cute farms." To say the absolute least, I was horrified by the truth behind the food I was eating. I learned that these animals are treated as if they are not living creatures who can feel pain and emotion. Factory farmers put them into spaces they can barely move around in, fed food that gives them little or no nutrition, and most factory–farmed animals are injected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Walsh DATE: 3/2/2015 RE: Old Mule Farms The Old Mule Farms is a cow–calf operation that provides calves for feedlots to fatten up before being sent to packing houses and eventually sold as meet for consumers. The current owners have been experiencing a problem with losses in revenue. The expenses that Old Mule Farms incurred are veterinary bills, labor, nutritional supplements and minerals, and a variety of forage. The forage is primarily grazed grasses but is supplemented with hay. The owners of the farm have found a correlation between the weight of a cow, and the cost of feeding it, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking into consideration that the weight of the cows is a key driver of calf weight, which in turn is the key driver of revenue. An Old Mule Farms average cow weight ranges between 1000 lbs. and 1400 lbs. My recommendation is that if they were to eliminate the lighter and heavier 40% of cows respectively, Old Mill Farms would have heavier calves to sell, resulting in higher revenues. This would also reduce expenses each of the heavier cows has been causing. This recommended approach will substantially reduce the expenses incurred by heavier cows, and increase the calf sell weight produced by the lighter cows. The best approach to measuring the proper size of a cow is to use the primary key driver of cow weight and compare the value of a calf to the cost of maintaining a cow. The principle of diminishing marginal productivity states that as one input in the production process is increased, there will be a point in which the addition of an input will result in smaller and smaller benefit. We can relate this principle with the weight of cows. As more nutrients, minerals, and forage is added to a cow the more a cow weighs. This in turn results in heavier calves. However, when a cow begins to weigh over 1200 lbs. the weight of calves diminishes. When taking in to account the principle of diminishing marginal utility, Old Mill Farms would be able to eliminate their losses by restricting their cow weight to 1200 ... Next is the skin irritancy test which involves shaving the fur off animals and applying the test substance to their skin. The skin is observed for signs of irritation. The third test is toxicity tests. In this test, substances are fed to the animal, and they are observed for signs of poisoning. The test may last several days causing the animals to tolerate extreme suffering. The animals that actually survive the test are killed at the end for autopsy. Many people believe that animals are necessary for testing. However, with the highly advanced technology we have available today, there are several other options. First of all, there is no reason why manufactured need to use any new substances because there are over 8,000 ingredients which have already been established as safe. The law requires new ingredients to be safety tested before they are introduced to the public. Animals may be the easy answer, but they do not need to be the only answer. Several alternatives include testing on reconstructed human skin, using computer modeling, and enlisting human volunteers. Besides, human volunteers are often more reliable to test products for human use rather than using a different species with a different biology. Animals in the agriculture industry are subject to an entire life of mistreatment, should their lives even last ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To insure the calves are born within this time frame the calves will be collected from cows that have been inseminated from the same bull at the same time and tested positive for pregnancy. These calves will be castrated with the Short scrotum method with the use of a rubber ring. This method involves restraining the calf, preferably in a squeeze chute, and taking a tool to expand the tight rubber band and placing both testicles through the band. While doing this the band must be firmly against the naval at the base of the scrotum before releasing the rubber band. Twenty–five of the calves will be castrated at a week old. The calves will start out on a diet of fifty percent orchard grass hay and fifty percent alfalfa hay at three percent of the calves' body weight per day. The alfalfa will provide the amount of protein needed that the calves needed in early growth. The orchard grass will help prevent bloat from an all alfalfa diet and provide essential nutrition as well. This will last for the next three days. After the first three days grain (12% sweet feed) will be introduce at two pounds a day along with the same amount of hay for another three days. After this period every three days another pound of grain will be added until the calf is eating 6 to 8 pounds of grain per day. This should amount to a 50/50 mixture of grain and hay. The calves will be weighed weekly to adjust the amount of hay given to maintain the 3% body weight of hay. Once the calves have adjusted to a grain diet the ration will be changed at a 10% increase in grain every 7 days until an 80/20 ratio of grain to hay. • 45. My Last High School Rodeo Essay examples I took a deep breath as I walked my horse into the Greeley Stampede Arena. I told myself just to "relax." I loped a circle around the arena to make sure that my horse was warmed up and ready to go. He was ready but I was starting to get nervous. I stopped in front of the roping box to put my piggin' string in my mouth. I looked at my calf in the chute to make sure that it was number 33, which was one of the best calves out of the whole set. It was, and I was ready to ride into the box and rope my calf, or attempt to rope my calf. I began to get more nervous, more nervous than I ever had been at a rodeo. The reason for my nervousness was because it was the last rodeo of the High School Rodeo season. The last rodeo just so happened to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part of the reason that I had this confidence was because of my new calf roping horse that I had bought. His name was Loopy. He was sixteen years old and had been to far more rodeos than I had. So needless to say he was experienced and very dependable. This was a change from my 2000 season where I was learning to rope calves and so was my horse. This year I could concentrate more on myself and I didn't have to worry about my horse. The only time that he didn't work was at the first day of the State Finals Rodeo. I didn't blame him because I didn't want to work either. It had rained all night and part of that morning so the arena was about three feet deep with mud. I managed to rope my calf and tie him in a time of 13.3 seconds, although Loopy didn't work very well. This time gave me a sixth place finish and added five more points to my total. What was even more amazing is that I managed to get off of my horse without falling on my face, which happens a lot in the mud because your feet will stick. The next day of the Finals the arena was in good shape but I drew a bad calf and ended up placing tenth earning only one point. However, that point was very significant because it moved me from sixteenth place up to fifteenth place in the state. This meant that I qualified as one of the top fifteen and would come back to the short round the next day. I was excited that I had made it to the short round because the year before I ... Leg Pain in a 22 Year Old Female Soccer Player A 22–year old female soccer player has had a 3–month history of deep aching pain in the antero– lateral right leg and on some occasions, bilaterally (1). The pain occurs within 15 to 20 minutes of her training regime or upon commencing a run. She reported symptoms of tightness in her anterior leg, and weakness of ankle dorsi–flexors (1). She described that symptoms worsened as the exercise duration was prolonged. When activity ceased, symptoms were alleviated, though pain would return if she re–engaged in the activity. Upon attempting to continue training, she developed numbness in the foot. On examination, mild tenderness was noted on palpation of the antero–lateral compartment (1). This case study presents an individual who is experiencing frequent leg pain upon participation in physical activity. Leg pain is a common condition experienced by competitive and recreational athletes. However, the diagnosis of leg pain can be difficult as there are numerous possible underlying contributors. A thorough comprehension of human anatomy and biomechanics is essential for a proper understanding (2). Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome is one of the most common conditions experienced by athletes (1,2). Of a group of 150 athletes who reported exercise– induced pain, 33 % were diagnosed with chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) (2). In the last decade, society has erupted in controversy over aquariums and it has driven both aquarium workers and consumers to speak up on the issue of the cruelty that animals placed in these situations have faced. Individuals have gone to aquariums as a form of entertainment for decades and they have become a part of American culture. "On average, one aquarium has opened each year for the past 12 years, a 50 percent increase over the 25 'accredited' aquariums that existed prior to 1990" (Savoye). Aquariums such as SeaWorld, which welcomes millions of people each year, allows families to experience the joy of seeing creatures that they normally would not have the chance to see. However, behind this joy is the pain that these marine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Killer whales such as Tilikum are intelligent, social animals that need a large space to thrive. However, in aquariums and theme parks like SeaWorld, these marine animals are forced to live in small, unnatural spaces that cause them distress. (See Figure 1). As a result, their personalities and temperaments will change and it can have deadly consequences. When discussing Tilikum, John Jett, a scientist and former SeaWorld trainer says, "There's no place to swim and not much to do. His teeth cause infections. He 's sunburned. He 's bullied. Given his boring life and ill health, it comes as no surprise that he killed" (Tocco). While SeaWorld workers may claim that the whales that are put into captivity are not subjected to harm and are given plenty of room to roam, there is no justification behind forcing these animals to live in solitude. For such intelligent and social creatures, living this way goes against their very nature. Additionally, aquariums have adopted many disturbing practices that include tearing calves away from their mothers and transferring them to different theme parks. In the wild, orcas tend to live in pods, which can have up to 30 whales, that will travel together for their entire lives. The experience of having it's calf taken away is extremely traumatic for both the mother and the calf, given that in the wild the calf rarely leaves its mother's side. This was my first time being on a dairy farm and learning about the production of milk as I have never experienced anything like this. On the way to the farm, Courtney was driving and I was the navigator and at times we thought that we were lost because we were in the middle of nowhere. After missing one of the turns and looping back, we finally made it to the farm where the class was meeting. As soon as I open the door, the smell of manure assured me that I was in the right place. I could not get use to smell, however, at times I would be distracted that the smell was not bothersome to me anymore. The farm owner, Jon Slutsky, and one of his employ greeted the class and gave us a brief overview of the farm. Jon explained that when he started the business in the 1980s, they have around 60 cows, but today they have about 1,400 cows that they milked. The breed of cows that Jon have at the farm is called Holstein and that his calves are born on the farm with artificial insemination. There is about 28 employees that works with Jon o take care of his cows. Eleven of the workers are in charge of milking the cows and the rest of the workers are working to take care of the cows. A cow is milked three times a day and it produces about 10 gallons of milk a day. Since then, these sports have become increasingly well–known around the world and in society. Distance running, and road racing cycling have many different components including the types of equipment's used, muscles worked, VO2 max levels, the weather each sport can occur in, etc. Although these two sports are quite different, they are both well known and loved by the many individuals who take part in a healthy sporting lifestyle. By analyzing the nutritional requirements, common injuries, and legal and/or illegal performance enhancing drugs, many differences and similarities can be discovered and revealed regarding these two sport activities. Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life. The Day Of The Barn An Appreciation One cold January morning while my dad, brother, Wyatt, and I were completing the daily barn work, I noticed that my heifer was in her early stages of labor. She was making low mooing sounds and trying to push out her calf. We penned her up in the labor pens so she could be by herself and came back out to check on her throughout the day. By the time nine o'clock rolled around, we still didn't see any signs of a calf. My dad and I were worried because she had never had a calf before and we didn't know if she would have it on her own or if we would have to assist her and pull it. The temperature was below zero which meant if we didn't get the calf warmed up and dried off once it was born, there was a very high chance it would freeze to death. We decided it would be best to sit in the barn all night and watch her to make sure she was going to be okay. My dad and I sat on a couple square bales placed right beside the calving pen telling stories and just talking to each other so we didn't fall asleep. My mom and brother would bring us hot chocolate to keep us warm and stay for a while to keep us company. My father, Alan Snyder, is the most hard working, dedicated person I know. • 89. Your Personal Golden Calf Introduction. "What are you doing at work, that really matters?" That is the most challenging question anyone, in my opinion has a hard time to answer. We all work to make a living, and pay the bills. We forget to find the true purpose in the work that we do in the workplace, from nine to five. Matthew 5:12 states "now when he saw the crowds, he went up on the mountainside and sat down and he began to teach them". We as Christians should follow in those same steps, by first finding out what really matters at our place of work, and applying that to what really matters the most. The vision, goals, and results have to authentically, organically, spiritually, and consistently coincide with my faith in the workplace. "You see, to those who follow Jesus, what matters most in our work life is seldom what matters most to everyone else" (Zigarelli, 2008). The Arizona air was crisp and filled with the sweet smell of waffles. I jumped out of the hay loft and ran out of the barn door. I got to the house and threw open the old squeaky door. My Pa was planing on getting a door ordered, but we lived so far away from the nearest settlement that they wouldn't deliver it and it was too far to travel. "Morning' sweetheart, ya hungry?" Ma said. "Just a little, smells good!" I said, as I pulled out a chair from our old oak table that my ma got for her anniversary 13 years ago. These waffles were only given to me 3 times at the very most every six months, because it was a three day long journey just to get the ingredients.Ma set down the stack of waffles and went through the squeaky old door. It starts out when the people ask Aaron to "make us gods, which shall go before us." Despite the fact that God had spoken to them just days earlier commanding them not to make themselves any graven images, Aaron doesn't argue too strongly against this, immediately asking them to turn over any gold jewelry they have so that he may make them a figure of worship. This choice of material symbolizes man's covetous nature, perhaps also implying that Aaron feared to go against God's wishes directly, and so he chose gold in the hope that the people would be loathe to part with it. However, they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says that the Egyptians would mock the Israelites, laughing that their God would lead them out of their servitude only to face destruction at his own hands. Rather than respecting his power, they would see that he was either unable or unwilling to complete the salvation he set his people upon. And so the Lord agres to set aside his anger at the people, while Moses returns to them with God's commandments. Before he even reaches the base of the mountain, Joshua states that there is "a noise of war inside the camp," to which Moses responds that he doesn't hear cries of victory or defeat, but rather those of revelry. This seems to put a shadow of foreboding over the story, implying that soon there will still be cries, but of a different nature. When Moses sees the golden icon that the people now worship, the story states that his "anger waxed hot," in the same words that God's displeasure was described, showing that Moses' anger was just, because it was at wickedness, and in the name of the Lord. The story climaxes when he burns the icon into dust. By reducing their figure to the smallest particles possible, Moses shows the idolaters that an idol is like to nothing, since dust is as close to nothing as he could make it. He has the people drink the dust as a gesture that their sin will always be with them, ingrained into their bodies. When he asks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have waited ever since I was a little girl for this opportunity, and it was finally here. So, my father and I packed up our stuff and left the warmth of Phoenix. We were leaving the "Valley of the Sun" and headed for a place called Wyoming. After two days and fourteen long hours of driving, we made it to our hunting unit. The mountains were tall (11,000 feet +) and covered with bright powdery snow. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. I was eager to set–up camp and prepare for our nine day hunt. We parked behind some trees about a half mile from our last moose sighting and started stalking closer. We were nearly to the Moose spot when we heard another vehicle coming down the trail behind us. We thought for sure that no one would be so un–sportsman–like that they would just drive by us and start shooting. It had to be obvious that we were stalking that Moose. But just in case, we hurried it up and ran down the trail. As we turned the corner, we saw the pickup stopped in the middle of the trail and the hunters were below the road glassing and talking loudly. It is a vital skill that cattlemen must be prepared to use whenever necessary to save the life of a newborn calf and its mother. When you observe a cow in labor distress, obtain the following supplies and bring them to your clean, well–tended barn: obstetrical chains and handles, several dry towels, dry straw, warm, soapy water, and obstetrical gloves and lubricant (if desired). The first step is to herd the cow into the barn, keeping her as comfortable as possible. Make sure the straw has been spread out in birthing stall beforehand. Once the agitated cow is in the barn, leave for about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wash hands in the water, and set the bucket aside, don't dump the water out. Fetch obstetrical (OB) chains, handles, gloves, and lubricant. Place the towels where they are easily accessible once the calf is born. Then, make a half–hitch and loop it just under the dewclaw. Examine loops to make sure they are secured to the foot so they won't fall off during the pull. When the chains are securely in place, hook the obstetrical chain handles on each chain. Keep one handle a few inches farther away from the foot than the other––this is to help the shoulders pass through the birth canal easier. Once handles are placed, begin pulling the calf. Pull with even, constant pressure. When the cow pushes or strains pull harder with her. Once the head and shoulders are out, turn the calf one quarter of a turn as you pull. This will help his hips pass through the birth canal. Once the calf is fully out of the mother , move the calf several feet away from the cow's feet to avoid injury to human and ... Some of the artist decided to show their feelings while using bright colors to create their ideas. Some of the artist accomplished aim through distortion, exaggeration and sometimes fantasy as well as expressing anxiety and frustration in there paintings. I also previously read that some of the expressionist who were artist had died fighting in two of the World Wars and some of the them had successfully made it through. Roots of the German Expressionist School lay in works of some of the artist like Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch each who evolved a personal painting style. The worker picks up the baby roughly and puts him in a pen where he will be soon delivered to a veal crate. The dairy industry is a ernest problem from killing animals to wasting money, but with making dairy adds illegal, a full time supervisor, and a law on how many babies can be sent to a veal crate a year will help fix up the issues with this industry. The dairy industry is a huge problem because it is taking the life's a lot of cows. Just like humans, cows will only have milk after having a baby, so they are impregnated. Also, like humans the baby cows will need to drink milk but the farm/feedlot will take them at birth from their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later, the baby will be shipped or trucked to a veil farm where they are fattened and then murdered for veil. Furthermore, not only are the baby's dying, the mother will not be cared for after she stops producing milk, which is usually around three years(or 4 childbirths) ,leaving her to perish with no medical attention. If you ever been to a dairy farm you might notice the cows seem a little beat up. That is because when they get hurt, they are not properly cared for and a lot of them will die since the cuts will get infected. The harming of innocent animals isn't the only thing wrong with the dairy industry, our government spends millions of dollars every year on maintaining farms, and advertisement. It is estimated that over "180,000,000"(Green, 2002) dollars are spent on advertisements for dairy every year. This p–value indicates a significant difference between the avg. jump heights of males and females. The bars are the avg. jump heights along with standard deviation of the mean. Results: The p–value of 0.00203 is p<0.05 thus we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that there is a significant difference between the two means. A big part that contributes to this result (significant differences) is that males on average tend to have more muscle mass than females ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Maybe calves do play a roll but one that causes a relationship between the two. Other factors could have affected the overall results could be that the jumping was not standardized, lack of a bigger sample size, and the fact that when measuring the jump height it had to be predicted where the person's hand reached, thus leading to huge assumptions on the measuring part. Comparison of calf circumference and jump height in females Figure 3: Comparison of avg. calf circumference and jump height (both in CM) in females (n=10). A R2 value of 0.0426 (0.042592 in EXCEL) indicates a weak relationship between calf circumference and jump height. Results: Obtaining a R2 value of 0.042592 means there is no relationship between calf circumference and jump height. One cannot determine the jump height by having the calf circumference. Similarly with the calf circumference and jump height in males, physiologically, it would make more sense for the hamstrings and quads to play a bigger role in jumping height as they are bigger muscles and generate most of the force to jump. Even if calf circumference did have a role it might be insignificant. Additionally, there could have been other factors that contribute to the end results: everyone not jumping with the same intent (max effort versus minimal effort), possible injuries, or soreness. Another source that could have contributed to end results for being what they are is the lack of a big sample size. Additionally, measuring the

A giraffe was once a gift fit for an emperor, and the emperor of China decided to give the emperor of India the same gift. Giraffes are the tallest animal averaging 16 to 20ft tall, the second tallest animal is the African elephant which is 8 feet tall. Giraffes are great examples of animals that have adapted to their habitat. Their long necks allow them to reach high to eat off of high trees, while still being able to swing their necks low to drink from the ground. This animal has a calm and easygoing life. Giraffes involved over the years and they will continue to involve in the future. As we all know giraffes have incredibly long necks and are varied in color from light tan to black. They have markings on their fur that are identical to a human's fingerprint. Male giraffe's grows up to 18 feet and the female giraffe reaches up to 14 feet tall . Colors that giraffes are commonly found in giraffes are white, tan, red, brown, black . Giraffes also have very long legs, that measure up to 6 feet. • 134. The Dairy Farmer, The Perception That The Public Has... Introduction For the modern dairy farmer, the perception that the public has regarding the industry has a significant impact on their overall wellbeing as a company. However, most people in modern society have little personal experience with farming, and their opinions are often based on second– hand information (Boogaard et al. 2010). In general people are more concerned with the welfare of the animals and want them to be able to display natural behaviours like grazing on pasture for most of the day (Cardoso et al. 2016). This however, can prove very problematic for dairy producers as it results in lower control over feed intake and body condition score of the cows. Body Condition Score (BCS) is a management tool used to assess body fat stores in dairy cows (Ferguson et al. 1994). It has been correlated with overall reproduction, health and productivity of dairy cows at it is considered one of the most practical methods of assessing changes in energy stores (Berry et al. 2007; Bewley et al. 2008). However, due to its subjectivity and time consumption it is not a widely used management tool in the industry. There are many studies that try to use technology as a way of making an automatic system for BCS. This paper aims to identify the perspectives on the BCS from the public and the producer, benefits of using an automated BCS and current technologies available. • 138. Business Planning ECV Turning up the Heat in the North East The profitability of a beef suckler herd is directly related to the number of calves reared per cow annually. Commercial suckler herds should aim for a tighter calving period with cows producing a viable calf every 365 days. The average calving period for lowland suckler herd is 21 weeks, compared to the 12 week target and reducing the calving period from 21 weeks to 12 weeks can increase revenue from extra weaning weight by more than £2000 for a 50 cow herd. Tighter calving periods will increase profitability. If the weaning date on the farm stays constant then a calf born in the first 3 weeks of calving will on average have a weaning age of 230 days weighing 309kg. A calf born in the 18th ... This data can also be used to give health and nutritional insights for the farmer in a user– friendly format. SCR Heatime works by monitoring the cow's activity with a unique motion–sensor tag which records cow activity in 2 hour blocks, providing detailed data on the cow's activity levels and their intensity. The data is collected each time the cow passes under the ID unit, the data is transferred from the tag to the Heatime control box using infra–red communication. This allows the base unit to be sited close to water troughs and other well–used routes so the animal's activity data will be picked up regularly. The activity data is analysed by the system and separates the cow's day to day activity from oestrus related activities. The screen shows obvious peaks when the cow is in heat and indicates the optimum time for inseminating the cow. In addition, SCR Heatime will highlight cows with low activity levels which can act as an early indication that an animal requires attention. The home screen will flash up as a 'health alert' giving the farmer early warning to possible ailments in the cow. The system also detects non–cycling cows, allowing them to be investigated so that less fertile cows can be removed from the herd, thereby decreasing costs. • 142. The Two Breed Crossbreeding System b) Three breed cross: In this system of crossbreeding three breeds are used. The bulls of three breeds are used in rotation in successive generations of crossbred females of the previous generation (37,55). This is thus called the rotational crossing. This system is practiced to maintain heterozygosity and to utilize heterosis for maternal ability of the crossbred dams (55). Three breed cross requires the input of three separate breeds (55). Along similar principles as with backcross, all first cross male progeny are sold. First cross females are joined with bulls of a third unrelated breed, instead of with one of the parent breeds as in the backcross. All progeny of F1 dams are sold for slaughter (55). This system takes advantage of both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This system is an excellent choice as it produces maximum heterosis in both the calf and cow (51). As such, calves obtain the additional growth benefits of hybrid vigor while heterosis in the cows improves their maternal ability. The terminal cross system is one of the simplest systems to implement and achieves the highest use of heterosis and breed complementarities (17,44). All calves marketed will have the same breed composition. A 24% increase in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed is expected from this system when compared to the average of the parent breeds. 3) BREEDING FOR COMPOSITE – Development of a composite or synthetic breed results from the crossing of two or more existing breeds (43). There are many examples of this in Queensland: Santa Gertrudis, Drought master, Braford, Charbray, Brangus and Belmont Red. The primary advantage of forming composite breeds is that after the initial crosses are made, management requirements are the same as for straight breeding. McDowell ... • 146. Merrimack Tractor Case Summary 1. What is the appropriate cow size for the herd using the 50% weaning rule? According to the information provided, the most appropriate cow size for the herd using the 50% weaning rule would be 1,100 pounds. Although any cow size would ultimately result in a loss for the farm at this point, the cows at 1,100 pounds have a smaller financial burden than heavier cows. The 50% "rule" is not very specific, as the case only specifies [calf weight] "...close to 50% of [the mother's] mature weight", so it can be assumed that the 55.5% (585 pounds) is sufficient, which yields a marginal revenue of $28.08. To a much lesser extent, around 1,200 pounds could also be less burdensome for the farm than 1,300 or 1,400 pounds, but 1,200 is on the brink of barely breaking even at a marginal revenue of $6.48. Once the weight exceeds the 1,200 increment, the marginal revenue dips ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What are the drivers in a cow–calf operation? Is the revenue–expense calculation (see Exhibit 2) clear regarding drivers? Why or why not? While there are several drivers in a cow–calf operation, the accountant in the case specifies the driver for expenses as the number of cows –– due to the information provided about the cattle–calf industry, I believe he is incorrect in this particular case. Because many variables are dependent upon the weight of a cow and not simply the number of cows, it would be much more useful and relevant if it were shifted from per cow calculations to per pound. The revenue–expense calculation in Exhibit 2 of our case may be seen as a bit unclear, because its calculations are per animal, despite the revenue and expense being highly dependent upon the weight. Although the cow–focus could be very useful, it could also be confusing because of the variation of weights and, consequently, their sale prices. I would personally prefer the identification of fixed costs and variable costs in the calculation's construction as well, but calculations based on weight would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
