Contamination of water bodies from human activities changes their physical, chemical, and biological properties and harms aquatic organisms. Water contamination occurs through direct dumping of wastes as well as agricultural and household runoff. Toxins from contaminated water can kill both fish and humans, and lead to algal blooms and red tides. Contaminated water can also spread diseases in humans such as dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera, and other viral and parasitic diseases when consumed. Preventing water contamination through proper waste disposal, organic farming, avoiding plastics, boiled water and food, hand washing, and environmental cleanliness is important to protect both aquatic life and human health.
