Tie bars are used to hold together abutting concrete slabs and prevent them from separating or allowing differential deflection. They are typically 0.5 inches in diameter and 24-40 inches long. Tie bars are placed mid-depth of the slab at longitudinal joints between lanes or at edges meeting a curb or shoulder. They are inserted a few inches away from transverse reinforcing bars to avoid hitting them. Tie bars are manually placed before paving and half is embedded in the first slab poured while the other half sticks out for the next slab.
