This chapter presents the summary of the findings and the discussion of the formulated
conclusion and recommendation.
Summary of Findings
Based on the gathered data of the researchers, unrestricted usage of social media has strong
relationship to the academic performance of the respondents. It affects their academic life in which
they became addicted to social media and were even distracted on making their set of priors in
school. Also, majority of the respondents said that as a result of unrestricted usage of social media,
their performances in academics became much lower.
In continuation, unrestricted usage of social media had its effects on the written works of
the respondents. Engaging in academic forums and activities on social media raises their
understanding of the topics being discussed in the class. However, the respondents would spend
their time going online checking their social media accounts rather than reading their lessons and
thus, it lessens their time in studying which may result in getting low scores to the quizzes and
exams.
Furthermore, unrestricted usage of social media had its effects on making the performance
tasks of the respondents. Group discussions on social media yield good results as far as the
academics are concerned. Yet, majority of the respondents decline any academic participation due
to social media and thus, their grades showed no improvements since they had become engaged in
social media and their academic performances were affected.
Conclusion
Based on the accumulated results, the researchers concluded that unrestricted usage of
social media strongly affects the academic performances of the G12 SHS-IT students from
PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College. Together with the identified effects which are addiction,
distraction, and low academic performance, it results on to getting low scores on the written works
such us quizzes and exams, it also results to low performance on performing and making the
performance tasks which had the biggest portion on calculating the final grade in every subject
area.
Recommendation
To further prevent academic complications, students ought to be taught on the influence of
social media on their academic performances. And by having the teachers to exercise their power
or authority in keeping their students' gadgets under their control during class hours, the amount
2. of time to be spent on social media will drastically be limited and thus, provides an opportunity to
uphold greater academic participation.
