Impact Of Social Media On Academic Performance Of Students RRL
3. The use of social media is popular among all age groups, from children to the elderly. The
most active users of social media are students, including children, teens, and adults. The
purpose of this report is to see if social media can be used as a teaching tool.
On social media, students can join study groups to share assignments and study
materials with classmates and teachers. Students can upload their homework or
assignments to such study groups via a link provided by teachers. Students will save a lot
of time and energy that can be used to study as a result of this.
Mensah & Nizam (2016) carried out a study to examine the impact of use of social media
on students' academic performance in Malaysian Tertiary Institution. Survey method
using questionnaires as the instrument for data collection was adopted. The result
revealed that the use of Internet is a beneficial tools to students.
A study conducted by Owusu-Acheaw, & Larson (2015) assessed students' use of social
media and its effect on academic performance of tertiary institutions students in Ghana
with a focus on Koforidua Polytechnic students. The results suggest that social media has
an inverse relationship with academic performance. It can help students gain knowledge
that can be used to enhance their academic performance.
4. Many students use social media solely for social networking, chatting and just
whiling away their time. This wastes their study time and thus they are not
able to complete their homework on time.
While it may not be possible to completely eliminate the negative effects
of social media, use of certain ways may help mitigate them. Students should
avoid over indulgence with social media and use it moderately. Exercising
and meditating on regular basis will help them feel positive and energetic.
Impact of social media on students' academic performance is two-way. If
used smartly and judiciously social media can have positive effect on
academic performance.
