Explain the purpose and resources
required for analysing different levels
of sporting performance.
Pages 22-26 of the Electronic Text
Book will be very useful.
3. Task Context
• You are creating a resource for future coaches based
on your experiences in Unit 11 tasks 1 and 2.
• You need to choose two of the performer levels below
for you whole task to be based on.
– Foundation
– Participation
– Performance
– Elite
• You do not need to complete a comparison just explain
in detail each of the following factors.
• This resource should be able to support future coaches
start the work you have completed so far.
4. Talent ID
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Foundation level It is a good idea to have knowledge of a foundation
players talent id so that you can see if they have any
natural talent or if they are learning quickly the coach
would be the person who would pick up on these
details as even though the person who is being
watched may not see that they are better but the
coach would pick up on it first
Performance level It is a good idea to have this knowledge at this level so
that you can see there strengths and weaknesses at
this level talent id would have been made during there
experiences e.g. if in martial arts you scored often with
a side kick in competitions than that would be used to
make your talent id
5. Monitoring current fitness levels

Foundation U would not really monitor the fitness level of a
foundation player as they have only just started
however if they where of a low fitness then the coach
might need to modify the workouts so not to push
them to far
Performance You would monitor the current level of a performance
level sports person as they are going to be competing
against of people and so you need to be fitter than the
opposite person. You would do a specific test like a
sprint test record your results and them try and beat it
after 3 months of training for example
6. Identifying strengths and areas for
improvement

Foundation level You would look at how a foundation player needs to
improve by looking at there technique compared to
that of the “perfect” technique you then might not act
on what you have seen but you might start to “tweak”
their technique but you would mainly just say what
they are doing good not what they are doing bad
Performance level At a performance level you would look at how they
need to improve as they are going to be competing
against other people and so would need to minimize
your weakness while increasing your strengths you
would then make a training program that works to train
the weaknesses
7. Performance assessment

Foundation You would do this test on a foundation level performer
to see how they work under a small amount of
pressure or with a bit more responsibility , not as much
pressure as other levels might have but it might be
something like a smaller group activity so that they
have more responsibility
Performance At this level you would see if factors like crowds or the
opponents has an effect on the players ability and skills
and you would simply observe a change in there
ability's when training and when in a game situation
8. Recovery after injury

Foundation At this level if the a person comes back from a long
term or short term injury you would normal not get
them to do much exercise at all since they are at a
foundation level you would simply get them to do the
techniques at a low intensity and not to do much
exercise
Performance level You would want the sports person to return to the level
they where at prior to the injury but not want to
reinjure it and so you would do tests on the Injured
areas to see if they are fully healed and can cope with
exercise
9. Assessment of health status

Foundation At this level you would you would do this assessment
to see if it is safe for them to do certain exercise or not
this would usually be done by the coach and he would
just watch the person in question
Performance At this level you would look back at videos to see if
there was any improvements that can be made to the
persons health or ability's
10. Squad selection

Foundation At a foundation level you would not be picked for a
team as you are just starting but you would look at
there specific strengths for example in football if
someone was tall and was better than most at
goalkeeping then they would become the goal keeper
Performance In the same way as with foundation players the coach
would pick the best person in a squad to play in most
occasions but if he wanted to try someone else to see if
they can they do the same thing as the usual one then
they would.
11. Goal setting

Foundation At this level the goals are set by the coach and are set
to help the foundation player improve they are more
about learning the basics
Performance These are agreed on by both but are aimed more about
getting the sports person better in competitions and
things like that
12. Human
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
foundation Humans like coaches are able to encourage a
foundation level performer and main job is to praise
them and help them in that way
Performance At this level the coach is there to help the sports person
improve for competitions they might not be as praise
orientated but are still there to help the player improve
13. Facilities

Foundation At this level the user will not have access to high level
facilities and will most likely be at a leisure Centre or a
field it is just a area for the player to train
Performance At this level the player has access to a decent level
facility and be able to use the equipment there to
improve his own ability theses could be areas like a
gym
14. Time

Foundation At this level the person will still have other priorities
and things to concentrate on as they would not have
decided if they want to become a competitive sports
person in it
performance At this level the person would have devoted more time
to training as they are competing and so they need to
get better and they might train in the mornings if they
have other commitments
15. Equipment

Foundation At this level they will have a small amount of
equipment and so most of the things they will do will
ne with out equipment i.e.. Body weight exercises
Performance At this level they will have access to equipment as they
are going to be doing a lot of work to get better they
will have there own gear and probably gym equipment
16. Financial

Foundation At this level the person would not be spending a lot of
money on there sport as they have only just started
they would be using equipment that are being supplied
buy where ever they are training
Performance At this level they would have spent quiet a bit of money
on all this there own gear and clothing and any fees like
memberships as well these would be justified in there
eyes as the want to compete
17. Scientific support and equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
foundation Would have none at all at this level the idea of having
scientific equipment and test on them would be too
much pressure for them and the cost would not be
worth it especially if they quit soon after
Performance At this level there might be some equipment like basic
heart rate monitors but even at this level it would be
basic equipment unless they are exceptions but mostly
it would be basic equipment
18. Safety
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Foundation At this level the coach would need to make the safety
protocols very clear as foundation performers would
not know many of them also the coach might need to
set some limitations himself if he thinks there is a
chance that the user might hurt them self
Performance At this level the person would be aware of most safety
features that are in place these could be the rules of
the sport or how to use certain items but mostly a
performance level user would be aware of them due to
the fact they have used them for so long
