3. Coaching Log – Athlete Observation
Date 11/12/2014
Location Worthing College via video analysis
Strengths From athlete observation it has shown that Katie’s clear strengths were her concentration ability throughout a
game and her ability to make a correct line out throw decision. Other strengths of hers included running crash
ball lines and her body composition. My observations which I were able to get included both video analysis,
observation and conversation with the Katie which enabled me to get an overall picture of what Katie's
performance is like and where her strengths are.
Improvement Areas Her improvements form the profiling wheel show that her flexibility levels, strength and speed levels need to be
improved upon. when improving upon observation i must consider the idea of spending more time over the
analysing including breaking down of movements and focus upon areas that need to be improved upon that may
go unnoticed
Points for future
discussion
Points which will be discussed is her flexibility score, due to Katie having ankylosing spondylitis(areas of the
spine becoming inflamed, and has also been told that she is hyper mobile meaning flexibility is a weakness
because her levels can inhibit her performance and cause possible injury. future discussion will also consider in
more ways of being able to observe Katie as a performer and for the fitness components to conduct tests show
her strength and weakness areas as i am unable to see fitness components clearly from video analysis.
Possible actions arising actions arising will can include previous tests that would help determine the strengths and weaknesses with
comparative data to see whereabouts Katie is compared to the elite level which she wants to be at. if i were to
have a meeting again i would make sure that i had more videos from games both within and out of college to
analyse Katie in a variety of different situations but also to speak to other coaches to see what they believe
Katie's weaknesses/strengths to be. If i was to have this meeting again i would make sure that i research more
into the athlete position so i am able to understand their positioning more
4. Coaching Log – Athlete Profiling Meeting

Location Worthing College via video analysis
Discussion points The idea that she has a hyper mobility problem which will be rated normally compared to others, leading to
being a weakness, but having reasons for this. The observation went well by recently playing a game and
having currently video analysis she was able to effectively analyse her abilities to judge accurately.
Concerns Concerns for athlete meeting is although Katie has tried not too is the demand characteristics whereby some
aspects may not be completely accurate and reliable results.
Points for future
discussion
Future discussion would include analysing her game at different levels of play i.e. county and divisional
because of the different levels of ability she is playing at means that when analysing depending on the level
of her opposition will affect her level of ability which is shown therefore getting a wider variety of footages
to have assessed from.
Possible actions
arising
In the future i would make sure that the athlete has agreed upon the rating scale and that they understand
fully the rating scales and to explain in depth, and being able to give video analysis which the athlete can
also observe themselves from. if i had the meeting again i would make sure there is more time to have the
meeting as some parts were rushed due to busy schedules. i would also research more into Katie's
positioning on the pitch and so we could have a further in depth talk about ratings and scoring systems
compared to her positions and possible more scoring options incase of Katie playing in other positions.
5. Coaching Log – Coach Profile Meeting
Date 11/12/14
Location Worthing College
Discussion points A discussion point which came up, was how the scale was devised, which took into consideration both levels which
could be above Katie's level but also below Katie's level, Mark Rugman who is Katie's college coach agreed with the
scale but when filling in his ratings wasn't always sure of the results due to not having enough aberration i.e. strength
which has been developed in the gym by other coaches. also both results of ours being relatively similar ratings
showing more reliability in results and that the judging has been done upon an equal scale.
Concerns Concerns which may have come up is the idea of areas such as body composition, which the coach didn't always feel
comfortable in saying because of the idea that the athlete may feel self conscious and was unaware on what the body
composition should be for a performance level hooker.
Points for future
discussion
Points which will be discussed is her flexibility score, due to Katie having ankylosing spondylitis(areas of the spine
becoming inflamed, and has also been told that she is hyper mobile meaning flexibility is a weakness because her
levels can inhibit her performance and cause possible injury.
Possible actions
arising
to speak to more coaches which are involved in Katie's training such as her gym coach Sam Hewick to get a better
assessment level but also her club coaches which are harder to contact due to distance. i will also research about the
qualifications the coaches have got and the experience they have, by doing this will help me to get highest coaching
abilities results which will have a more accuracy, as well as a coach with lots of experience will have good skills at
being able to analyse others play and point out where Katie’s weaknesses are.
