1. LEGumes for the Agriculture of TOmorrow
(LEGATO)
KBBE.2013.1.2-02:
Legume breeding and management for sustainable
agriculture as well as protein supply for food and feed
2. LEGATO
29 partners, total EU contribution 5 mln EUR
Project is focused on”
• genetics and development of new breeding tools and
material (pea, faba bean, lathyrus, lupin)
• biotic stress resistance (weevils and aphids, pathogenic
fungi, viruses)
• optimizing plant adaptation to abiotic stress (drought and its
interactions with heat and nutrient shortage)
• defining traits adapted to consumers’ expectations
• grain legume cropping system management
• stakeholder interface for target orientation and practical
evaluations
3. Research profile of the Legume Structural and Functional
Genomics Team (The Department of Genomics, The Institute
of Plant Genetics, Polish Academy of Sciences):
• structure and organization of the narrow-leafed lupin
genome regions coding genes participating in the flowering
induction, symbiotic nitrogen fixation, phenylpropanoid
pathway, fatty acid synthesis, resistance to pathogenic fungi;
• molecular phylogeny of selected Lupinus representatives,
evaluation of synteny within the genus as well as between
lupins and other legumes (Medicago sativa, Lotus japonicus,
Glycine max, Cajanus cajan, Phaseolus vulgaris);
• cytogenetic insight into genome structure of the narrow-
leafed, yellow and white lupins, by FISH with chromosome-
specific markers (BAC clones);
• generation of molecular markers linked with agricultural
traits for selection of genotypes in breeding programs.
