3. The title of this magazine clearly reflects it’s subject. ‘Premiere’ suggest it is superior in brining the
very latest news on things to do with the film industry, giving the audience an insider's perspective.
The way Will Smith’s head partly obscures the text shows that the focus is supposedly on films and
actors rather than the insinuation making money. Interestingly, this technique was rarely used in
antiquated magazines such as ‘ Motion Picture’- in magazines such as this the key-images was
either overlapped by the institution or placed below it. This may because there is now a larger
number of celebrities admired by people sue to increased access and use of social and professional
media.
The anchorage text on the poster is all
related to the latest news in the film
industry. This is to attract the target
audience- who would be familiar with
some of the names on the cover. Also,
the magazine’s anchorage text is a
technique to attract new readers- by
mentioning famous actors of the time,
fans of celebrities as well as people
who just recognise there name are
attracted to read the magazine.
The main image on this magazine is of a well-known
film star; immediately attracting the
target audience’s eye because of their
presumed knowledge of actors and films.
Will Smith stares directly into the camera,
giving a slightly surrealist influence which
intends makes the audience feel as they are
watching a scene in the film.
Also, he has his fists clenched and raised to
portray himself as a strong, dominant male
character which amplifies the magazine’s
appeal to women as well as the
complimenting the anchorage text.
The font on this magazine changes to emphasise
different conventions of the cover. For example, the
title of the magazine is written in a classic, industrial-looking
font which would be used consistently on each
issue. Below that, the subtitles and anchorage are in
the same lettering to show professionalism and
consistency. However, to add interest and to make
some words stand out more than others.
The colour palette on this magazine is based around the
key image’s skin tone.
Will Smith’s dark skin blends into to paler hued,
minimalist background to give his appearance a
naturalistic tone- in order to carry on with the ‘scene
from a film’ idea.
At the top of the magazine cover, a black back drop is
used again to blend with the actor’s hair. Additionally,
this technique highlights the name of the magazine
which is written in white to create a simple yet eye-catching
monochrome effect.
White is also used for anchorage text so the colouring of
the magazine doesn't overpower the colouring of the
main image. Yellow is used as a highlighter for subtitles
and individual letters, which adds a pop of colour to the
magazine, whoever the yellow is dull so as not to distract
the audience.
4. The institution is included in the contents page. This reminds the audience to remember the name so
they will buy it again, and recommend it to their friends if they enjoy it. However, it is out of the way at
the top so as not to distract from the key image and contents menu. The black font used for this
contrasts to the white page, but isn’t bright enough to distract the reader’s eye too much. The signature
font is included for memorability whilst the black line acts as a border acts as a border running parallel to
one at the bottom, making the magazine look more like a poster to increase advertising appeal.
A small amount of information is
included about the still from the
featured film, to intrigue the
reader so they will read the full
article.
The heading ‘Contents’ is written
in the same font and colours in
each EMPIRE magazine. The red
and white are bold and
contrasting, primary colours
which will stand out from most
backgrounds/key images. The text
is large, but is often partially
obscured by the key image, to
make it the main focus of the
page.
The key image is a two shot of the leading
actors in the featured film, ‘The Great
Gatsby’. The attractive floral setting and
the actors’ costumes hints at a plot set in
the 20th century, centred around upper
class characters.
The intense look in Leonardo Di Caprio’s
eyes has connotations of conflicting and
strong emotions, whilst the minimal but
present contacts most likely represents a
love story.
The bright, slightly saturated colours draw
the eye in.
The subtitle ‘Regulars’ adds definition to
the contents page and marks out the items
that are seen in every issue. The font
contrasts with key image, but matches part
of the heading’s font, giving a professional,
slick look to the page.
The page numbers on the
contents page are large, so the
reader remembers them, and
elegantly printed to match the
theme of the key image.
The subtitle for each feature is highlighted in
red, to make them bolder and match the
font for the heading. This is done to create a
uniform effect. The subtitles are consistently
short, predominantly 1-2 words with the
exception of ‘how much is a pint of milk?’
This is done deliberately, so the reader
doesn’t lose interest by reading too much,
and instead see a brief, catchy summary.
Insertion of someone
featured in the magazine
breaks up the up the pattern
of text and adds interest.
However, black and white is
used so it’s not over
powering.
Large, bold font for
advertising. Institution
included for
further
reference.

My target audience are people generally interested in film,
more so individual films rather than mainstream cinematic
ones. My target audience would have to be quite specific
and in reality, probably older than my audience profiles.
This is because I really like of old film magazines like
Hollywood and Motion Picture, which would attract people
interested in films from the era they were created.
6. Media Consumption
This chart shows that the two most popular features
on a film magazine are new releases and sneak peeks.
Although these two categories are closely related,
they would be expected of a target audience
interested in new films. On the other hand, this could
show that people are more interested in finding out
about new films rather than the industry itself.
There is no interest in people’s achievements, so that
won’t be advertised feature on my magazine cover.
The most attractive convention on a magazine
cover, shown by this survey is the key image-specifically
of a famous person. I am assuming this
would mean an actor as opposed to a director or
producer, however I will need to clarify this. An
attractive colour is also shown to be important, and
I will need to consider this to create that will be
eye-catching. Value for money is shown to be
reasonably unimportant, and I think this may be
because people will be willing to pay for something
of good quality that they interested in.

Editor's Notes
This slide:
I have taken my favourite 3 magazine covers.
Chosen some full body and headshot images to use for my draft.
Chosen some possible colour schemes- I will probably take different elements of these and create my own.
Chosen possible fonts to use in different areas of the magazine. The ones for the cover are in blue font
