This document discusses key concepts in digital photography including aperture, shutter speed, ISO, file formats, and camera modes and components. It explains that aperture controls the amount of light entering the camera, shutter speed determines exposure time, and ISO sets the camera's light sensitivity. Common file formats are JPEG, which is smaller but compressed, and RAW, which is uncompressed but larger. Modes like portrait, landscape, and sports are designed for different types of photography. The camera components covered are the flash, power switch, mode dial, and shutter button. The document also notes that photographs are used in magazines to illustrate articles and grab attention, and on DVD covers to showcase films and attract buyers.
2. Apeture
Aperture is how much light is let in when taking a
picture for exposure the smaller the number the larger
the aperture for example f/2.0 is a large aperture and
f/22 is a small aperture.
3. Shutter speed
• Shutter speed is the length of time the shutter is
open when the photographer is taking a picture.
4. Focusing
• Focusing is when the photographer makes and image
blurry or sharp they would do this by turning a dial on the
lens of the camera
5. Iso
• Iso is how sensitive your camera is to the available
light around it the lower the iso number the less
sensitive your camera is.
6. File formats
• When saving a photograph there are many different types
of file formats the two main ones are jpeg and RAW.
• jpeg is a format that is very compact and small this makes
it easier to save and use.
• Raw is a format that hasn’t been compressed or anything
making it a lot bigger and harder to save.
7. Camera modes
• Aperture priority: Aperture value allows the photographer to control the aperture
• Program mode: program modeoffers the photographer partial control over shutter speed and aperture.
• Macro: macro is extreme close up photography and is usually used to take pictures of insects and other small objects to
make them look bigger than they are.
• Landscape: landscape photography is used to take picture of landscapes/places in the world for example mountains or
vast open areas.
• Night time: night time mode is used to take pictures at night or in dark places
• Portrait: portrait is used to take pictures of people for example a school photo.
• Sport: sport is used to take pictures of objects that are moving fast. It takes pctures all the time you are holding the
shutter button down so you can get the perfect photo.
• Automatic: automatic is used by people who don’t have a vast knowledge of how to use a camera and just want to take
a simple picture.
• Manual mode: Manual mode allows the photographer to control shutter speed, aperture and ISO independently.
• Shutter priority: shutter priority allows the photographer to control the shutter speed
8. Camera components
On a camera there are many different components these are
The flash: the flash is used when it is too dark so you can brighten up a picture
and see the object or person you are taking a picture of it can come up
automatically when there is not enough light or you can manually turn it on with
the flash button.
Power switch: power switch is used to turn the camera on and off.
Mode dial: the mode dial can be used by turning it round to select the mode you
would like to use.
Main control dial: the main control dial is used to control the shutter speed or
aperture depending on the mode you are in.
Shutter button: the shutter button is used to take a picture.
Flash button: the flash button is used to manually turn the flash on and off.
Lens focus mode switch: the lens focus mode switch is used to change the from
automatic focus to manual.
Lens release button: the lens release button is used to release the lens from the
button.
9. Why photographs are
used in magazine
• Photos are used in magazines so that the writer of the
article can show the main focus of the article and they are
also used to grab peoples attention.
10. Why photographs are
used in dvd covers
• Photos are used on dvd covers and backs so that the
producers of the film can put snippets of the film on the
back so people can see if they will like the film the covers
of the film will also grab peoples attention.
