This document discusses developing student resilience through project-based learning. It describes an online platform called eTwinning that allows teachers across Europe to collaborate on projects, and outlines some of the platform's features like online tools, workshops, and groups. It then contrasts traditional learning with project-based learning, noting how PBL provides meaningful, relevant learning where students have ownership. The document lists some tips for implementing PBL and criteria for a quality label, including original themes, varied methods, student leadership, interdisciplinary work, and results communication between partner schools. It closes by emphasizing the importance of collaboration.

I have a definition of success. For me, it's very simple. It's not about wealth and
fame and power. It's about how many shining eyes I have around me.
Benjamin Zander
We have been inspired how to create supportive environment to develop resilience, we have learnt how important it is to build resilience of the teachers. I would like to add some important points.
It is important to develop strong relationships with your colleagues. It allows you to share your feelings, gain support, receive positive feedback, and come up with possible solutions to your problems
Be always ready to learn new abilities, be curious, develop your professional knowledge and skills as this will strengthen your self-esteem and will have impact on your students and their respect
Be open-minded, excited about life
Take part at workshops, seminars that will improve your knowledge and expand your professional network, which can be supportive for you later
I have simple solution for you. Become a member of eTwinning community.
What is eTwinning ?.....
European workshops bring together participants from different European countries to network and share experiences. Networking and partner finding workshops are held for teachers in different European countries Throughout the school year and are offered to teachers free of charge.
Learning Events are short intensive online events on a number of themes. They are led by an expert and include active work and discussion among teachers across Europe.
eTwinning offers F2F or online trainings for teachers in every country, who want to know more about project work and using different ICT tools
The Online Seminars are live communication sessions where you have the chance to learn, talk and discuss about several themes.
eTwinning Groups are private platforms for eTwinners to discuss and work together on a specific topic or theme. Moderated by an experienced eTwinner, each Group sets out activities and tasks for teachers to do and discuss. Topics vary from languages teaching and collaborative writing to experimental sciences. The aim is for eTwinners to share practice examples, discuss teaching and learning methodologies and find support for professional development.
Project gallery offers projects which received quality label and can be reused by the teachers or modified.
eTwinning is an easy way to offer project based learning for students. Why is it so important for the students? Traditional learning is often boring for students and does not prepare students for real life and their future work. We know that this type of teaching is still present in our schools. We still can see teachers standing in front of students and talking, talking and expecting students to behave. It is not right approach at all and we can be sure that this will not help them build resilience. Can we do it different? Of course we can.
Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge.
Project is meaningful if it fulfills two criteria: first, students must perceive the work as personally meaningful, as a task that matters and that they want to do well, second, a meaningful project fulfills an educational purpose.
The project should be connected with curricula
Important is that students see the need to gain knowledge, they see relevance. Teachers should activate students with meaningful „entry event“ . It is not enough to motivate students to study because they will need it later in life or for a test.
Students are engaged in a process of asking questions, using resources, and developing answers
They have freedom of choice but responsibility as well, teacher´s role is to be facilitator
Students give and receive feedback on the quality of their work and make revisions
They present their work to other people
Students develop competencies valuable for today’s world, such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, ICT literacy, responsibility
Project based learning enables students to:
be competent
to explore real problems and challenges
to see relevance of their study
to be valued members of community
foster feelings that they have made a real contribution to their team, that they are useful
obtain deeper knowledge of the subjects involved
All this is essential for developing resilience.
Let ´s have a look at quality label criteria in eTwinning. They are important not only for getting quality label and as an inspiration for making good project. If we look at them closer, we will see that if we meet them, we can be sure that our students are on the right way to develop resilience.
To develop a project which can be judged as innovative, the first step is to choose an original theme. It is also necessary to use different pedagogical methods and make sure that the pupils take the lead and work collaboratively using different techniques like research, analysis, information gathering, problem solving
Our schools are like storage full of boxes – each box comprises one age group, one subject for one year. We open it and try to empty their content to the heads of our students. Every year number of boxes in their heads, separate knowledge without connection with real worlds. Is it possible to have education where topic is important instead of subjects? Topic which is connected with curriculum and comprises many subjects, develop creativity, has impact on real world? Participation in projects shouldn’t be considered as an extra task, but it should develop the students’ key competences. It is important to integrate project tasks within lessons and choose the theme of the project based on the school curriculum.
Communication and Exchange between project partners means that specific activities are planned to ensure interaction among the pupils, pupils know the goals of sharing information, for example comparison, knowledge development, widening the pupils horizons. Pupils deal with the same topic, share their work, discuss, communicate in forum, blogs, through videoconference, they comment the work of their partners, create quizzes, surveys. The result of their work is a cooperative final outcome.
In traditional school students work individually, they have no or little experience with collaboration. Is this the right way to prepare them for their next workplace? It is inevitable in today´s business to work collaboratively on a project and have real strong teamwork skills. When students work collaboratively they discuss together, solve the problem and create final outcome. Team members have their individual responsibility to accomplish the shared task which is inevitable for the final result of the whole team. Besides, team members have group responsibility, they have to make important decision together.
Using of technology can ´t be the aim. ICT tools should help us to achieve the project’s pedagogical objectives. There are lots of Web 2.0 tools that make learning more interesting, they can be useful during the whole project work. We can use them for searching information, sharing, communication, equal work of all students, they enable students to be creative, to create multimedia outcomes. We need to make sure that we and our pupils are always safe online.
Schoolwork is more meaningful when it's not done only for the teacher or the test. When students present their work to a real audience, they care more about its quality and what´s more, they are proud and feel real satisfaction which is important for building resilience. Audience can be peers, parents, business people or representatives of community.
It reflects back to us what we are. Let´s spread joy at our schools and students will give it back to us.
I was really impressed by the idea of Conductor Benjamin Zander. He said: I have a definition of success. For me, it's very simple. It's not about wealth and fame and power. It's about how many shining eyes I have around me. So let´s shine as many eyes of our students as possible! We can be sure then that we will have resilient students around us which will make us proud and resilient of course
